Bad Influence # Twelve: Getting Caught

Inuyasha rubbed his eyes tiredly as he finished dialing the number. Placing the phone to his ear, he looked out of his window with weary eyes. It wasn't long before a click was heard on his phone and a feminine voice answered. “Hello?” The voice sounded a little groggy.

“Hey, Maki, is that you?” Inuyasha answered.

“Oh, hey Inuyasha. How are things in the old country?” Maki answered back, and he could hear a smile in her voice.

“Not too bad. I hope I'm not calling too late.” Inuyasha muttered, but Maki heard him.

“No, it's not midnight yet so you're fine.” She laughed heartily.

“What are you doing up so late?” Inuyasha pretended to scold her.

“Hmm? Waiting for you to call.” Maki giggled. “Actually, I was just finishing up some work I had put off from school. I was about to go grab some yogurt and go over it when you called.”

“Maki, since when do you put off work?” Inuyasha asked.

“Since I learned to procrastinate from you! Lazy bum.” Maki accused, and Inuyasha could imagine her waving her finger. Inuyasha laughed; it was always easy to talk to Maki.

“How are things over there? Not getting lost are you?” Inuyasha asked.

“Well, it did take a while to get used to London. It's so big. My roommates are pretty nice though. If I ever need to find something, they are quick to play tour-guide. I'm so glad to hear from you! Do you know how crazy I'm getting being surrounded by girly girls all the time!”

Inuyasha laughed at her obvious sarcasm. “It can't be that bad.” He said.

“I miss you guys. True, I needed some girl time, but your antics are what makes things fun. By the way, how are Satoshi and Miroku?”

“Satoshi's the same as always. Don't worry, he's hasn't gambled away his inheritance yet. And Miroku is, well Miroku. Oh, by the way, I met his girlfriend!” Inuyasha laughed into the phone before he could stop himself.

“NO! Who? Tell me!”

“Her name's Sango. She goes to my school. One of Kagome's friends.”

“Kagome?” Maki questioned.

“Oh right, you don't know about her.” Inuyasha slowly explained about his life style. He told Maki about the deal he made with Kagome, about how the teachers are always on his case, school and about Sango and Miroku.

“So one of our best friends is dating Kagome's best friend. Who'd of thought that she was right under your nose this whole time? Well, now that the cat's out of the bag, do you guys intend to scare Sango away?” Maki teased.

“I don't think so. This girl looks like she can kick Miroku's ass better then you can. Besides, I've never driven any of Miroku's girlfriends away. He's done that himself.”

“Then she's a keeper. I always said that his best love will be the one that can keep him in line.” It sounded as though Maki took a sip of something.

“You're not…drinking are you?” Inuyasha teased.

“I'm not going to pull a Satoshi and drink myself dead when I have an exam tomorrow! Its just coffee.” Maki laughed. “Speaking of Satoshi, what did he say when you told him about Sango?”

“He laughed and asked me how hard she could punch.”

“I see.” Maki giggled.

Inuyasha suddenly felt horrible for what he was about to do. It sounded as though Maki was really enjoying his call, and he didn't feel like bringing up such grave topics, but he knew that he couldn't put it off any longer. Taking a deep breath, he began to speak. “Maki, I didn't just call you to tell you about Miroku. I got your letter.”

Instantly, all the cheer was gone from Maki's voice. He heard her take a deep sigh before speaking once again. “I have to know: did you get the letter first?” She asked.

“No, Satoshi and Miroku did. It was a good thing that you wrote it in English. Miroku didn't want to stake his ass so he didn't open the letter.”

“Good. Miroku used half his brain this time.” Maki gave a fake laugh. “So you read it then.” She said quietly.

“Yeah, I did.”

“Five years. How are you feeling?” Maki asked tentatively.

“I'm fine. You should be more worried about yourself. I'm a little worried about Satoshi too. A lot of things happened that night…”

“Yeah, but Inuyasha, you are the one who was on the receiving end that night!”

“So were you Maki. Stop saying it like it affected me the most!”

“Listen, I won't tell you to move back home with your dad and brother. Just promise me that you'll be careful okay? As the fifteenth gets closer, I really worry about you.”

“I promise. I'm worried about you too. You were also hurt that night.”

“Please, don't talk about that. I'm fine, really. I'm not planning anything that day. I've already told my professors that I will not attend classes. I told you I would stay out of trouble and I will. I'll be fine. You don't always have to play big brother.”

“About what you wrote about Satoshi. Did you mean it?” Inuyasha asked.

“I did. Every word.” Maki's voice sounded strained.

“Then why don't you-”

“Because I'm scared!” Maki cut across him. “If Miroku didn't step in that day, you know what would have happened to Satoshi, and you and me. I wouldn't be feeling the way I do now. But I can't risk my friendship with Satoshi and tell him, not after everything that we've been through.”

“Then why tell me?”

“Because I trust you, Inuyasha.”

“Alright, I'll keep it to myself, but only until you're ready to talk to Satoshi about it.” Inuyasha sighed.

“Thanks. Give them my regards on the fifteenth and try to stay out of trouble. I've got to get to bed.” Maki yawned.

“I will. Take care of yourself alright?”

“I promise. I will. Goodnight, and thanks for calling, Inuyasha, it really helps to hear your voice.”

“ Listen Maki, about Satoshi…never mind.”

“I swear I'll behave myself here. You do the same, okay?” Maki ordered.

“I will. Bye.”

Kagome stopped running, placing her hands on her knees as she took deep breaths. After a few moments, she stood straight, and began running again. The days were getting hotter, which meant that summer was getting closer and the outdoor track season was ending. Her team had advanced in district races, which meant that the coach was training them for the regional competitions now. She doubted that they would go as far as Nationals in this season, the coach never said anything about actually entering in that level, but as far as the championship, Kagome was sure they would win.

“It's hot…” Kagome mumbled as she came to a stop once again on the sidewalk. Though she always jogged on the weekends, the heat was making her sorely tempted to stay in her room with the air conditioner on all day. Summer meant finals were coming soon too, which meant track, extra studying and the large amount of work given from the teachers. Not to mention that she had to give up more of her time to deal with the end of semester events she was planning with student council.

Kagome sighed, knowing full well that the hardest part of her semester was coming. She looked up at the sun. The beginning of summer would also mean that it was six months since her father's death. A knot formed in her stomach.

“This is going to be one busy summer…” Kagome mumbled as she whipped the sweat off her forehead with her arm. Taking a sip from her water bottle, Kagome decided that two hours of jogging was enough for one day. Turning on a corner of the street, Kagome began to walk in the direction of home.

As she walked down the street, someone came out of the store in front of her, holding a large brown, paper bag on his shoulder. “Oh crap!” He cursed when a few apples fell from the paper bag, and rolled on the sidewalk.

Pausing, Kagome quickly gathered the apples, as the man lowered the bag from his shoulder to pick up his fruit.

“Here.” She said, handing a few red apples to him.

“Thanks.” He said, taking them before he looked up. “Oh, hey, it's you.” Kagome picked up the last apple before looking at the man's face.

“Oh hi! It was…Satoshi right?” Kagome said as she got to her feet, handing him the last apple.

Satoshi shook his head, pushing Kagome's hand away before saying, “Keep it, I have plenty.”

“You sure?”

“Absolutely.”

“Thank you.” Kagome said, polishing the green fruit on her running shirt.

“You must really like apples huh?” She asked as he picked up the brown bag from the ground.

“Yup. I eat about three of them a day.” Satoshi smiled. “So, how have you been, Kagome?”

“Me? Fine.” Kagome answered. “What about you?”

Satoshi began walking down the street with the brown bag in his arms and Kagome following. “I've been fine. A little busy though. It's finals time down at the University, and I'm trying to fit in studying and working.” Satoshi smiled.

“It'll be finals for me soon too.” Kagome said, biting into the apple. It was really juicy, and she was glad it was cold and refreshing in this heat.

“Have you been jogging in this heat?” Satoshi asked, noticing her running outfit. “Careful that you don't die of heat stroke.” Satoshi laughed.

Kagome swallowed. “That sounds like something Inuyasha might say, but with a bit more sarcasm.”

“Well, being around him for so long, you do catch a few things. Speaking of Inuyasha, I hope he's not giving you too much of a hard time in school. He can be a bit of an ass.” Satoshi laughed. Kagome was finding it strangely easy to talk to him. She knew that when they met, she would get along with Satoshi just fine. He had this “best friend” aura about him.

“Inuyasha has been…manageable for the past few weeks.” She said, taking another bit of the apple.

Satoshi gave her a stern kind of look. “Has he been giving you a hard time?” He asked, narrowing his eyes.

“Oh no! It's not that. I've just had a few rough times in school and we had a little argument, but everything's fine now.”

Satoshi smiled again. “That's good to hear. I was worried that he might do something stupid. Oh yeah, he told me about Sango and Miroku.”

“That's right. Miroku is your roommate, isn't he?” Kagome said.

“You know,” Satoshi looked up, “I never would have figured that Miroku's girlfriend would be a friend of yours. Small world huh?”

“Yup.” Kagome laughed.

“I just hope that Sango can keep him in check.” Satoshi muttered, looking back at the street.

“Inuyasha said the same thing.” Kagome remembered.

“Well, Miroku's always been the perverted one.”

“What about Inuyasha?” Kagome laughed.

“He's the grumpy and sarcastic one.”

“Can't argue with you there. What about you, Satoshi?” Kagome held up her hand to his face like an invisible microphone.

“Hmm, I guess I could be the friendly one. And Maki would be the sensible one.”

Kagome stopped. Maki…where had she heard that name before? Satoshi stopped and looked back at her. “Something wrong?” He called.

“Who's Maki?” Kagome asked.

“Oh, she's a long time friend of ours. She's studying aboard in London right now, but last time I spoke to her, she told me she might be coming back to study here.” Satoshi answered.

“Oh that's right, Inuyasha said something about her too.” Kagome mumbled to herself. Looking around, she realized that she was very close to her home.

“Oh, this is my street.” She said. “Do you need help with that?” She asked Satoshi, who raised his brows at her.

“I'm carrying apples, not weights. Thank you for offering though. I'll see you around.” Satoshi said, throwing her another apple, before crossing the street.

“Bye, thanks for the apples!” Kagome yelled, waving at him as he vanished from her sight. She smiled, feeling much better than she had a few moments ago. Maybe the summer wouldn't be so bad after all.

As she climbed the steps that led to her house, Kagome tossed the yellow, green apple up and down. Walking across the courtyard, she saw her mother hanging some laundry nearby.

“Oh, you're back.” Ms. Higurashi said as she was hanging another shirt up. “How was your jog?” She asked kindly.

“Hot.” Kagome answered.

“Where did you get the apple?”

“A gift from a friend.” Kagome smiled.

“Would you like me to wash those clothes for you Kagome?” Ms. Higurashi asked.

“No thanks, Mom. I'm just going to go take a bath, I'll take care of it myself.” She passed her mother, walking into the house and breathing in a deep breath.

The sound of footsteps resounded through the house as Kagome paused at the stairs. A moment later her little brother, Souta rushed down the stairs, with a soccer ball tucked under his arm.

“Oh, hey sis.” He waved as he passed her, running toward the door, pulling his shoes on.

“Hey, do you want to play some soccer before I go play with Shippo?” Souta asked at the doorway.

“No thanks squirt.” Kagome walked up to him, ruffling his hair. “I've had my fill of sport for today.”

“Okay, but you don't know what you're missing. See you, sis.” Souta said as he vanished through the door. Sighing, Kagome walked up the stairs to take a bath.

“Kagome! Dinner will be ready soon!” Ms, Higurashi called from downstairs.

“Coming!” Kagome called be grumpily. She had been spending the last few minutes trying to configure an annoying math question, her concentration being shattered the moment her mother called.

“Oh! I hate you, Math Analysis!” She huffed as she closed the book. Rising from the chair, she walked out of her room and down into the kitchen, where her mother was pulling plates out of the cabinets.

“Could you take these to the table?” Ms, Higurashi asked as she placed food and plates on the counter.

“Okay.” Lifting some plates into her hands, Kagome walked to the dining table when the doorbell rang. Placing the food and plates on the table, Kagome said, “I'll get it!” Straightening her shirt and jeans, she walked toward the door, opening it. “Good evening-” Her voice caught in her throat.

“Hi.” Inuyasha said, watching Kagome as she stared, jaw dropped and wide-eyed.

“What are you doing here!” She whispered when she found her voice, looking back into the house frantically.

“What? You forgot about our deal already?” Inuyasha said, stunned.

This was not good! She had forgotten that she was supposed to feed Inuyasha whenever he didn't have money. He hadn't been around lately, not since he had gotten sick a little over a month ago so she had forgotten. She never planned how she was going to give him food with her family around. Oh, her Grandpa would have a heart attack if he found out that she let him stay over while they were away! And how would Ms. Higurashi react; Kagome wasn't sure if she would be disapproving or friendly about the deal she made with Inuyasha.

“Who's at the door, Kagome?” Ms. Higurashi called from inside the house. The blood rushed to Kagome's face.

“Oh, that's right, your folks are back.” Inuyasha said, looking over Kagome's shoulder and into the house.

Kagome grabbed his shoulders, which was hard since he was taller than her, and pushed him away from the door.

“Hey!” He muttered irritably.

“Shh!” Kagome reached up to cover his mouth. He looked back at her angrily. “If my parents find out about this deal, I don't know what they would do! Go around the house and into the back yard, I'll think of something!” She whispered urgently, rushing back into the house.

“Uh, it was no one Mom, just a friend stopping by from school.” Kagome said, nervously as she entered the kitchen. Oh why had she said that! That was exactly the truth! Why couldn't she lie more effectively, or at least stretch the truth a little!

“Alright then.” Ms. Higurashi said dismissively, taking some dishes to the table. Kagome breathed in a sigh of relief.

“Um, I'm not that hungry. And I'm really behind on my math homework, so I'll just…go upstairs.” Kagome mentally yelled at herself. Why did she sound so nervous! Why couldn't she say one little lie! Now her mother would know something's wrong for sure!

“Alright, Kagome?” Ms. Higurashi said suspiciously as Kagome ran up the stairs two at a time.

Throwing her door open, Kagome looked out through her window into the back yard, gasping. Inuyasha was down there, kicking a soccer ball with Souta, who had been playing a little before dinner. As Kagome opened the window, she heard Souta say, “Wow, you're pretty good Inuyasha.”

“Well, I am.” Inuyasha smiled.

“What are you doing!” Kagome called in a hushed voice through the window. Inuyasha picked up the soccer ball, looking up and Kagome.

“Hey sis, this guy is really cool!” Souta called back.

“Souta, please don't tell anyone that he's here!” Kagome called frantically from the window.

“Why?” Souta asked.

“Kagome!” Ms. Higurashi called from downstairs.

“Ah! I'll be right back! Stay down there!” Kagome whispered through the window before rushing down stairs.

“Yes, Mom?” Kagome breathed as she hopped into the kitchen a few seconds later. Ms. Higurashi looked her over, scrutinizing the way she panted. Kagome fidgeted under her stare.

“Tell Grandpa that the dinner's ready.” Ms. Higurashi stated.

“Right!” Kagome nodded, running out of the kitchen and into the living room, where her grandfather was re-reading the newspaper of that morning. “Grandpa, dinner's ready!” Kagome shouted before running back up the stairs, leaving a bemused old man behind.

Opening the door to her room, Kagome's heart did a summersault as Inuyasha stood in the middle of her room, looking around. “Wha-how did you get in here!” Kagome screeched. There was a boy standing in the middle of her room!
“I climbed in through your window.” Inuyasha said as he walked toward her desk. “Oh, and your brother promised not to say anything about me being here.”

“You're in my r-room…” Kagome muttered, shocked. Her surprise didn't last long however, because the next second, her heart banged against her ribcage when a knock was heard at her door.

“Kagome? Is everything alright in there?” Ms. Higurashi's voice came through the door.

Kagome let out a quick and quiet scream, before she grabbed Inuyasha by the arm and shoved him unceremoniously into her closet. “HEY!” He protested, annoyed.

“Just stay in there and be quiet!” Kagome ordered, sliding the closet door closed. Seconds later, the door of her room squeaked open as Ms. Higurashi peeked inside. She walked into the room, looking around for anything out of the ordinary.

“What's going on here, Kagome?” She asked.

“Nothing mom!” Kagome replied automatically.

“I was so sure that I heard voices…”

“Oh, that was just the…uh…stereo! I turned it on too suddenly and the loud noise scared me!” Kagome said dramatically.

“All right. Well, call your brother inside for dinner.” Ms. Higurashi gave Kagome one final look before walking out of the room, closing the door behind her.

Moments later, Kagome sank to her knees in the middle of the room. “Phew! That was close!” She said breathlessly.

“You know,” Inuyasha said, as he slid the door of the closet open, “you're a terrible lair.” He came out of the closet, some of Kagome's clothes, had fallen on him when she had suddenly shoved him in there. “And I don't appreciate being shoved into a closet!” He snapped, peeling Kagome's clothes off of himself.

“Sorry.” Kagome muttered.

“You're a C-cup…barely.” Inuyasha said as he held up a white, frilly bra, that he had just pulled from his shoulder.

Kagome blushed, stuttering. “G-give me that!” She yanked the bra from his grip, hiding it behind her, her face cherry red and her heart attacking her rib cage.

Inuyasha gave a sly grin and laughed. “You and your virginal antics!” He said between chuckles.

“S-shut up!” Kagome blushed harder, waving her fists in front of her.

“I can see it, you know.” Inuyasha laughed, pointing to the bra that was still in Kagome's fisted hand.

“Ak!” She hid the bra behind herself again, blushing and looking at the floor, mortified.

Inuyasha laughed. He turned to the window calling out to Souta who was still waiting down in the back yard.

“Hey, kid, your Mom says it's time for dinner, and don't forget to keep it a secret that I'm here.” He said.

“Okay!” Souta said enthusiastically as he ran into the house.

Inuyasha turned to look at Kagome again, smirking. She had quickly hidden the bra from his sight when he had turned around. She had taken care of the clothes that had come out of the closet too. Inuyasha wondered just how fast she was when she wasn't running.

Kagome blushed twice as hard when Inuyasha looked back at her. What was she going to do? She could trust Souta to keep quiet, he usually did, but she doubted she could keep Inuyasha a secret from her parents for long. How was she going to get him something to eat without getting caught? If she called off the deal then he wouldn't come to school, and she couldn't have that: the teachers were asking her to keep him in check. On top of all that, she had a guy in her room, something she had never done before and it caused her to blush an impossible shade of crimson! If her dad was here and he found out, he would punish her till she was fifty!

“So, how are we going to do this?” Inuyasha said as he looked around her room. It smelled so clean. Everything was organized. There was a door on one wall of the square room, a window on the opposite wall, the closet next to it, a bed covered in blue sheets adjacent to the wall with the window, and a desk with books and school supplies set neatly on it at the wall opposite the bed. Inuyasha looked down to see that he was standing on a soft looking rug.

“D-do what?” Kagome asked, breaking Inuyasha's survey of the room.

“I'm pretty sure you don't want your folks to know that I'm here. So how are you going to live up to your end of the deal without getting caught?”

“I'm not sure…you could wait here, until they are asleep. Then I could sneak down and grab something for you.” Kagome said, trying out the idea. Inuyasha raised his eyebrows, looking at her strangely. Kagome fidgeted under that angry, scrutinizing look.

“What?” Kagome asked nervously.

“You want me to stay in your room until your folks are asleep? Aren't you the naïve little girl.” He criticized. Kagome paled. She hadn't thought of that! She rushed passed him to her bed, pulling the sheets.

“Whoa, aren't you eager! I didn't mean it that way, it was just a warning.” Inuyasha watched shocked when Kagome turned around, eyes flashing and with a bat in her hands.

“I warned you that I keep a bat under my pillow!” She said, slapping the bad against her palm warningly.

“You were serious? You actually sleep with a bat under your pillow?”

“You can never be too safe.” Kagome growled.

“I don't plan on raping you. Stop giving me that look!” Inuyasha snarled. When Kagome stared at him with untrusting eyes, he said, “Would I really attack you with your family in the house? Besides, who the fuck do you think I am, some kind of monster! I would NEVER do that to a girl! I was the one who saved you from those assholes in the alley remember?” Inuyasha growled. For once, he was REALLY offended. What Kagome was accusing him of stood against the promise he had made to himself years ago as well as one of his moral principles.

Kagome seemed to calm from his reminder. Putting the bat down, she said, “Your right, I'm sorry. Still, you can't blame me for being nervous.” She said with a glorious shade of pink on her cheeks.

“I only said that so you wouldn't be so carefree about those things.” Inuyasha huffed. Kagome was amazed. Was he worried about her? Actually, he seemed really serious about it. Why was that?

Inuyasha's stomach rumbled. Kagome laughed, earning her a look from him. “Sorry.” She said, though still smiling.

“Man, I'm so hungry. I guess I don't have a choice but to wait. Damn it.” Inuyasha grumbled. Kagome smiled awkwardly. She walked across the room, sitting at the chair near her desk, the bat still in her hand.

Inuyasha sighed, sitting in the middle of her room. Kagome turned, pulling the math homework that she had been working on earlier. Sighing, she grabbed a pencil and went back to work. After a few minutes of grumbling and intense thinking, Kagome's frustration was slowly rising as she continued to solve problems.

“You got that one wrong.”

Kagome jumped in her seat. Not only had he snuck up on her, he was standing so close that she could hear him breath. “Don't sneak up on me like that!” She cried.

“You got this one wrong to.” He said, leaning over her shoulder, his upper body pressed onto her back, to point to one of her solutions on the paper. Trying her best to ignore his proximity, Kagome looked at her paper, cheeks pink, and said, “What's wrong with it?”

Inuyasha pointed to a figure in her solving pattern. “Look closely.” He said. Kagome looked at what he was speaking of. She flushed with embarrassment when she realized that what he was pointing at was a simple mistake that threw the entire equation out of balance. She had multiplied incorrectly.

“Uh, I hate math.” She grumbled, erasing the mistake.

“Want me to help?” Inuyasha offered.

“Sure, I just wish you weren't looking over my shoulder. It makes me nervous.” Kagome muttered. Inuyasha walked over to the side.

It wasn't long before her math work was out of the way. What would normally take her an hour to finish, she had reduced to twenty minutes. Every time she made a mistake, Inuyasha would tell her to check again. And if she didn't understand something, he was quick to explain it.

“How is it you are so good at this?” Kagome asked as she put her most dreaded homework aside. Inuyasha shrugged and walked across the room.

“I'm not really good at it. I just remember things easily. So I never really have to study.” He said.

Placing her books back in a neat pile, Kagome was about to turn and say “thank you” when the blood rushed to her head again. “G-GET OFF MY BED RIGHT NOW!”

“AH!” Inuyasha jumped up from where he'd been sitting on the blue blanket, covering his ears. “Don't yell so loud wench, damn it!”

“New rule: you are forbidden to sit on my bed ever again!” Kagome screeched, pointing her finger at him threateningly.

“Yes ma'am!” Inuyasha flinched and sank back on the floor again, saying nothing.

“Good.” Kagome placed her hands on her hips.

A moment later, the door opened and Ms Higurashi said, “Kagome, what's going on in-”

Kagome flinched as she and Inuyasha turned slowly to look at her mother.

“Shit.” Inuyasha muttered.

“Uh-oh.” Kagome paled.
