Shadow literally sighed as he landed. The flowers that had seemed so peaceful and inanimate suddenly erupted into chaos as their petals flew up and danced around him. They brushed his face, his arms…his entire body seemed to tingle as it felt the feathery softness.
The idea of simply falling backwards and closing his eyes would have seemed tempting, had he not been flowing with anticipation at what was waiting for him in the house by the lake.
He ran, and more flowers caressed his body in protest it seemed. He ignored them, however, as he was too eager to get to his destination. Once there he resisted the urge to throw the door aside and opened it gently as he slid indoors.
Shadow narrowed his eyes and frowned in confusion. The house appeared empty, even though all of the lights had been turned on. He was about to holler hello to se if anyone was even there when he heard a faint giggling from behind the couch. Smirking, he soundlessly crept backwards and went to peer around it when suddenly he felt two arms around his waist and two more considerably smaller ones reaching for his ears.
He fell forward, caught himself before he hit the floor, and rolled slightly to make one of his attackers let go of him and stay on the floor. He rolled back over and positioned his legs on either side of his wife and pinned her shoulders down. “Got you,” he said, smirking and nuzzling her forehead with hers.
“Oh really?” she asked, copying his smirk. She nodded to someone behind him and before he could retaliate the two arms that had been reaching for his ears now wrapped firmly around his shoulder. Shadow's eyes widened as he was pulled backwards and was now lying on his back. Once again, he had underestimated his son's strength.
His wife, Haley, now jumped on top of him and pinned his shoulders like he had her. “Now what?” she asked playfully, resisting the urge to lick his lips.
Several thoughts crossed his mind of what he actually wanted to do to her. But, he decided to restrain himself.
At least until their son went to bed.
Still, Haley didn't miss the hungry look in his eyes. She gave him a quick, mock glare, as if to scold him for his thoughts. Then she got off of him and allowed him to stand.
Once on his feet, he was nearly thrown off balance again by his son as he jumped up and wrapped his arms securely around his father's neck. “Hi Daddy!”
All three of them laughed as Shadow pulled him off, threw him into the air, and caught him again. Of the three years that Shoal (their son) had been born, he'd only been with his father a year and a half of them. This was credit partially to the fact that Rouge had kept that “little secret” from him, but Shadow knew it wasn't entirely her fault.
When he found out what had happened to Haley, he'd been mad at himself more so than he had Rouge. Mind you, he still had been upset with her, hiding something so important and dragging him away on that wild excursion so he couldn't check up on things, but he didn't blame her.
Not now anyway……..
“Okay little man,” Haley said to Shoal as his father set him on the floor, “the deal was you could stay up until Dad got home. Now say goodnight.”
Little Shoal put on an indignant face, but did as he was told and gave his father on more squeeze before running to his room. Haley flashed Shadow a smile before following her son.
He smiled back as she left with a dreamy look on his face and thought about following her, but his mind was racing at such intensity that he stayed put. He had overheard Rouge and Topaz talking, and something about hearing it again troubled him.
He didn't mean to leave in such haste; he had been worried about Haley. He surely hadn't meant to disregard Rouge, but now he could see how she thought that he might've done so.
But, Haley had gotten pregnant, and that was something he couldn't ignore. Shortly after meeting her, Shadow had found out from her (it seemed she had been researching his past very thoroughly, for reasons she wouldn't explain to him) that Gerald had given him the ability to conceive one child.
Just one.
He had left so quickly because if Haley's child was his, in this case it was, it would be the only chance of ever having a family and a real, normal life.
But……..if Haley hadn't been that way, would he have left Rouge? Was finding the letter and the hopes for a family the only reason he had left?
“No…..” he whispered unknowingly. There were other things Rouge did that had pushed him over the edge (ignore double-meaning perverts). She constantly hid things from him for one. He tried to pass it off as they were just things he had no business knowing, but she even told him one day that she just enjoyed knowing more than he did.
Her flirtatiousness was also a minor annoyance. He knew it was part of her nature, part of who she was, but sometimes she just did it to tick him off, even when it was directed at him. Needless to say, he got tired of that.
But the main reason, two reasons actually, dealt with not what she did but how he felt.
The first was simply that she felt things for him that, after a while, he could no longer return. He'd heard that `Let's just be friends' was normally a way of simply dodging a situation, but that's what he really wanted. They had been incredible allies and partners in the past, and if they became anything more than that, they could never go back.
Rouge couldn't understand that he valued her friendship more than her love.
The other major reason why he left was his complete devotion and dedication to Haley. She awoke feelings within him that he had never even dreamt of experiencing before. Rouge did love him, and for a while he loved her back. But when Haley came into his life, he was forced to make the decision of what he really wanted; Haley was the one to step down and give him the most precious thing beings could ask for…
Choice
She had told him she didn't care what happened to her, as long as he was happy. That left only him to decide between a woman he cared abut for a while and the amazing girl that came into his life now.
He'd wanted to get this feud within his heart over with, so he went out and bought a ring. He'd been trying for weeks to figure out whom to give it to, and then he found the letter.
When he'd found out that Haley had almost died giving birth because she was so young, he realized how much she really did mean to him. From giving him the freedom of choice to almost dying so they could genetically pass something on, it became clear to him what he had to do.
He proposed to her and they were wed on the same beach where they had first made love. They then moved up to this remote place in the mountains to spend the remainder of their years, or hopefully at least most of them, away from the city.
But first, since Shadow had done so much damage to their forces, and mostly because they needed some way to get money, GUN enlisted him on any and all `special missions' the facility was confronted with. In other words, involving things that humans couldn't do themselves.
It worked out perfectly though, GUN sent him about $3000 a week, and more when he asked for it. Haley, bless her heart, took care of bills and other financial issues.
The bad thing was, these trips often dragged him away from home. If the missions were high on priority, it could be several days until he got home. The longest he'd ever been gone was four days. But, the longer he served, the longer the layaway was until the next mission.
Suddenly, Shadow was broken out of his reflections when a cool hand pressed against his forehead. He turned his head and half-lidded eyes to find sweet, gleaming gray eyes staring back at him.
He smiled at his wife, who smiled innocently but had a slight worried tone to her voice. “You've been out for the past seven minutes.”
He smiled wider and gave a small chuckle as he laced one arm around her shoulders and one around the small of her back, pulling her close to him.
Accepting the invitation, she laid her head on his shoulder and let her hands sprawl over his chest. “You were almost gone for two days, I missed you.” She smiled as her arms went her around his neck and he placed a hand behind her head.
“I missed you too……”
“What were you thinking about?”
His smile faded as his eyes grew cloudy with lust. A small, almost inconspicuous smirk played across his features as he gently kissed her forehead. “You……” he whispered seductively.
Haley fought the urge to roll her eyes and withheld a shiver as she caught on to his tone. “Shadow, please. We've hardly said two words to each other and you already want to be frisky?”
“Frisky?” He knew she was trying to be funny. “I am not trying to be frisky. I'm trying to show you how much I missed you because we both know full well I'm not a man of words.” Before she could say anything in retaliation, his mouth crashed down on hers and erased all thoughts she might've had.
She moaned as he unleashed his uncontainable tongue to raid her mouth. She lifted a leg and he ran his hand across her inner thigh before taking both legs and wrapping them around his waist, all the while never breaking the heated kiss. Supporting her weight, he lead her to their room, at the end of the hall, creeping quietly so as not to wake Shoal up.
He laid her gently on the bed, finally breaking the kiss and trailing his tongue down her neck.
She let out an exasperated whimper. “But don't you think….”
“Shhhh,” he cooed against her neck, taking his gloves off because he knew it drove her crazy when he touched her with his bare hands, “the only thing I want to hear you say now is my name.” He kicked his shoes off and smoothed his hands over her legs.
She moaned again and tangled her hands in his quills. This was going faster than she even anticipated, but she was enjoying it. His hands were still running over her thighs, but he seemed to taken a great liking to a spot on her neck and was suckling furiously on it. She wondered how bright red her neck would be in the morning.
Gently she managed to wind her hands out of his quills and placed them between the two of them, gliding them over his well-built body. She stopped when she could feel his blooming erection and began stroking it. Her mouth began nibbling under his patch of white fur.
The combination of them both made him let out a strangled cry. He hadn't intended things to take off like this, but he knew one thing.
He had to have her.
Now
He growled deeply, and then dove in for another kiss as he spread her legs open. He brushed the tip of his member with her soft lips and gently looked into her eyes for any protest.
She rose her hips up to meet his and gave him a taunting kiss on the lips. He sighed and nuzzled her forehead as he slid into her. He lost all sense of control then. He gripped her shoulders and pumped into her at an amazing speed that increased as he went.
Haley moaned and screamed his name, loving every passing second. Somewhere in the back of her mind, however, she wondered if something was wrong. Normally they made each other endure a plethora of teasing before they made love.
All that was temporarily forgotten for the moment though as they were both rapidly reaching their limits. “Shadow!!” she cried, as he let out a yell.
They both let their climax pass as Shadow rolled to the side and brought his wife as close as he possibly could to him. For one of the few times in his life he made love to his wife with more than the intention of just pleasing her.
He needed assurance.
All of the doubt was now washed away as Haley fell asleep in his arms. “Haley….” He panted, kissing her cheek. “Thank you……”
She didn't hear him of course, as she was asleep, but then again he didn't need her to. Her presence, the very fact that she was there for him, was all he needed.
“I love you………so much…….”
