------------------------

“5.…4.…3.…2.…1.… Go.” The camera man urged her, adjusting his lenses for the dark night.

“Greeting people of Station Square, this is Scarlet Garcia reporting once again. Behind me the last plane has arrived and the last guests of honour will shortly step out, the Freedom Fighter party that includes Princess Sally Acorn and her hero consort Sonic the Hedgehog. As anyone can no doubt remember Sonic saved us last year by defeating the sea monster “Perfect Chaos”. As you can see hundreds of people have shown up to greet them as they come for the summit on the Colonies’ foreign policies - following a remarkable offer of a truce by Doctor Julian Robottnik. Hopefully whatever is decided will ensure the future of our great nation of colonies.”

Behind the Reporter a small private jet was bombarded with spot lights, all owned by GUN, Scarlet was well aware they were there to make the Mobians cringe from their better developed senses. The door had yet to open, but the reporter hoped to make the shot of the year by capturing Princess Sally and the ceremonial dress as she walked down the stairs. And if Sonic gave one of his famous hero smiles whilst it was happening it would be all the better.

Crowds of people had gathered hoping to catch a glance at the hero or the Princess, and as the plane’s door opened the cheering started. The crowds were only kept back by the GUN soldiers who were present, protecting not only the Freedom Fighters but also the General and the President as they stood at the bottom of the plane’s stairs on the quickly set up stage.
The door opened and reporters already began taking pictures. The tiny pricks of light almost erased from the night by the massive beams of the spotlights.

Sally walked down the stairs with difficulty, practically salivating at the thought of taking off the cumbersome white regal dress. Sonic had his arm around hers and was enjoying every second of it, waving and smiling to the crowd as they shouted praise. Next down were Antoine and Bunnie, whilst there was overall less cheering there was still a large amount of fans present for the two. The Coyote couldn’t help but feel embarrassed when a large sign came up proclaiming someone’s love for him, with a phone number.

“On behalf of Humans everywhere welcome to Station Square.” The President said as they reached the stage, smiling although she could tell he was nervous. The entire thing was being broadcast across the colonies as well as on large screens behind them for the benefit of the crowds and reporters. “Is this all your party your majesty?”

“No, there’s two more in the plane Mr President.” Sally replied.

“Anyone I’ve met before?”

“I’m sure you know them both, but one will be especially memorable.” Sonic answered, the Hedgehog’s face had been a constant scowl at the man who had been causing his girlfriend to worry so much had suddenly started to smirk. This’ll teach them to go back on promises, if there’s one thing the weirdo can do its scare people!

“Well then, bring them out.” Sally smiled, unsure about what would happen but fairly certain it’d would be better for GUN and the people of Station Square to be scared than to think they could make such decisions with no consequences. The President of the Colonies wasn’t too bad she knew. He was simply afraid of the General who was so many years his senior, even if they looked similar ages. But he had at least considered going over the Robotnik’s side, and as such she knew she needed to give him a small reminder she still had power. Sonic would have been thinking the exact same thing, if not for him missing out all the reasoning and politics and simply reaching the end conclusion faster. Actions were Sonic’s thing, let the reasons be sorted out earlier by someone with the patience.
“Mr President.” Sonic announced. “I’d like you to say hello to Miles Prower, the Fox who saved Station Square from Eggman’s Nuclear missile, and his new friend. Shadow the Ultimate Life form. Who spends his time trying to destroy it.” Sonic grinned in an uncharacteristic evil pose, and Sally got the chills as she realised how close it was to one of Shadow’s, even if this one was from simple mischief.

As soon as the name Shadow was said the President’s face lost all colour and the General’s eyes widened. They both looked up the stairs to see a sunset coloured Kitsune smiling very nervously down at them. He walked down and behind him there was the sound of confident footsteps. The crowds were silent and wide eyed, the cameras trained on the dark spectre as it emerged from the plane. Scarlet Garcia was, for the first time in her 11 year career, speechless. She simply opened and shut her mouth repeatedly on camera.

Tails was already at the bottom of the stairs next to his Aunt/adoptive Mother, looking at her for reassurance. She simply smiled at him, but even she had not expected this reaction. No one was shouting, or screaming, they were simply watching like an animal dazed by headlights in the road.

Shadow stayed at the top of the Plane’s stairs, looking down on the crowd with the most evil look Tails had ever seen. Far away in her club a Bat fell off her chair in shock, before screaming into her mobile for all information on the Hedgehog from her newest employers.

“This is what a promised you Maria, for all the people of this planet…” Shadows voice was quiet and sorrowful, somehow making it more scary than it usually would be. “I promise you… REVENGE!” Only those on the platform heard him, and only two of them truly knew what he meant. Sally felt a pang of fear, realising that even Tails might not be able to keep him under control and the General spoke into a tiny radio pinned to his sleeve. I a second a dozen soldiers had surrounded the stage and had laser sights on Shadow.

“Get this on video!” Scarlet shouted to her camera man, but he needed no prompting. He would probably get a bonus for this! Scarlet could see the headlines now, it would either be “GUN soldiers kill political representative” or “GUN soldiers slaughtered - Is our country safe?”.

“Get down on the ground and put your hands behind your head!!” One of the soldiers shouted. Shadow just glared at him before completely disappearing from view. Second after he disappeared the bullets hit the steps but he was definitely gone. The crowds were being forced to leave now, but Scarlet and her crew were up in a special viewing area, no one would notice if she kept filming.

Tails looked around frantic, he had to stop Shadow before he did anything that would hurt anyone. Come on Tails, you’ve seen him fight before. What would he do?!? Tails started running for the soldier who had told his mate to stop.

“Get down! He’s going to kill you!” He shouted.

“Tails, stop!!” Sally screamed after him, but saw it was too late for her to stop her adopted son so she instead concentrated on averting disaster. “Listen to him!!” Obeying her the soldier flung himself to the side just as Shadow appeared behind him, razor blades emerging from his air shoes and his body posed for a kick. He saw Tails running at him and his vengeance addled brain registered it on some level, but he was too interested in decapitating people for thought right now. Shadow’s foot had already shot out and was heading for the Kitsune’s head. Tails froze in fright, and time seemed to slow down. He saw I coming towards him and tried to move, using adrenaline boosted reflexes to try and avoid the deadly blade.

There was a burning pain in the Fox’s cheek, almost welcome as proof he wasn’t dead. Sonic’s hand on his shoulders, he had pulled him back. Shadow didn’t even pause as he swept his foot up again on instinct, once again Sonic was only able to pull Tails back enough to dodge it by a few centre metres, giving Tails another smaller cut crossing over the first like a bleeding X. In Shadow’s mind there was only him and the enemy, Tails still wasn’t registered through the intrusive programming meant to destroy humanity. Sonic managed to pull his friend back again twice before Shadow jumped away to examine the “Soldier” that had been able to dodge him. The Ultimate Life form’s eyes opened wide and he stepped back quickly. The other Hedgehog assumed this meant he was no longer trying to cut his friend up.

“You ok little buddy?” The smiling blue Hedgehog asked. Beneath his hero grin however, anyone could see how worried he was. The fox could do nothing but nod, shaking from head to foot. He had seen the blade coming towards him, the blood was pouring down his cheek from even the relatively light cut. His boyfriend had attacked him, more than once. Was what everyone said really true? Was he just insane? Did he really even love him?

Shadow tried to go to the Fox, but he found himself surrounded by GUN soldiers and primitive robots, too worried to bother fighting them off. Even he could see now was not a time to start a fight.

“Is he okay?” The Princess asked frantically, but calmed when she saw the cheek wound was the only cut. As more and more soldiers showed up to point guns at her secret weapon she turned quickly to her almost bodyguard. “Antoine, try to explain some of the President’s own laws for me will you?” The coyote nodded and followed her command. “Now were not going to get shot, Bunnie, go see to that cut on Tails’ face please.” Again, her orders were carried out. Bunnie ran to Tails, who was still standing motionless looking at the Ultimate Life form with wide eyes. Sally herself decided to go and make sure the silent black Hedgehog was okay, something told her Shadow would need someone to talk to if he was going to stay with Tails, and more importantly, be her secret weapon.

After a quick look at Tails Bunnie concluded that the cut, whilst no doubt painful and letting out a lot of blood (as all head wounds do) it wasn’t life threatening.

“Looks like your gonna have a scar Tails. Come on, they‘ll be a first aid kit in the limo.” Bunnie told him, but he didn’t respond. She guessed he was in shock, the Fox wasn’t used to injuries, let alone gaping cuts dealt by your lover. I hope the lil’ Fox is gonna be ok, or he won’t be able to try out that stuff I told him ‘about.

Bunnie simply lifted Tails off the ground and carried him to the waiting limousine. However, when Shadow tried to run after them he found Sonic blocking his way and Sally‘s hand holding his shoulder.

“Haven’t you scared everyone enough yet Shadow?” Sonic asked scowling. True, that was what he had wanted, but like always the goth had gone overboard. Shadow opened his mouth to respond, and waited for his cynical insulting comment to come out. Before finding he didn’t have one. Sonic walked to the limo too, more for the dramatic effect as he was planning on running anyway.

“Shadow, I don’t think you should speak to Tails for a while. He needs some time to think.” She said gently before following Bunnie to the Limo, worried about her sons mental state. Shadow was left standing there, the GUN soldiers slowly putting their weaponry down as the President timidly explained the diplomatic immunity and the importance of treaties to a pissed off General trying to justify shooting everything in a hundred metre radius.

----------------------------------------

Far away Robotnik was plugged into an Artificial reality chamber, allowing him to move his holographic projection over hundreds of miles.

Snively was however, there in the city. With Metal Sonic, Terios, and the projected Eggman. The Government had granted them space for one war ship to land, and he was currently fine tuning the plans for Julian’s creature.

Metal Sonic, was currently fine tuning his aim. He could now hit something say… the size of Sonic’s head, with a detachable claw at 30 paces.

The warship looked like a standard air cruiser from the outside. Painted jet black, red and yellow with the occasional gun battery and the huge smiling logo of the Eggman empire painted on the side. It was about a hundred meters long and whilst it was impressive, there were a lot more ships with a lot more fire power on Eggman’s side. The two leaders had agreed on a model that could be shot down relatively easily by anti air guns but that would cause a large amount of damage to the capital if it was. Relying on the thought that no one would want to fire to keep the peace. However, within it was far from standard. If the deals went wrong, something bad was going to happen to Station Square.

------------------------------------------

Neithe r Shadow nor Sonic were actually in the Limousine with them. Sonic was running along side, occasionally making detours to visit restaurants and such when the elongated car stopped for red lights. Shadow however, was simply sitting on top of the Limo as it was escorted (by noticeably nervous GUN agents in cars). Silently in his head, he cursed the things that made him him. He was too confused to act on anything anymore. His father needed him to destroy the planet, he wanted to destroy it. But he knew that he could not harm Tails anymore, the Fox was the only thing he cared about that was still there, instead of the dust and nostalgia of his memories. One thing he was certain of though, if he stayed with his new love the Fox would be harmed. He didn’t know who by, or how much. But he knew it in the depths of his heart. He was a danger to him. Shadow looked down through the sunroof at the Fox having his cut washed by his aunt. At that moment he seemed more like a child, flinching at the stinging antiseptic. Shadow hadn’t gone near him since the Princess had told him to, a good thing too. Shadow could now see how saddened he was, the last thing he’d need was him. He was truly better off without him.

“What you thinking about?” Shadow jumped out of his thoughts and turned to see Sonic perched beside him. It was worrying that he hadn’t noticed him, but Shadow put it more down to his being detracted more than his rivals (non existent) stealth. Sonic was half smiling at him, but he looked suspicious.

“Nothing that concerns you Hedgehog.”

“Come on. Tell me your not actually feeling guilty.”

“Sonic, be quiet before I smash your head into the next stop sign.” The Hedgehog just laughed however.

“I don’t think so Mr Smiley. You’ve done enough to piss off Tails without getting into a fight.” Shadow groaned, Sonic was - for the first time in his life - right.

“Sonic, what do you actually want.”

“I want to know, why is it you hate me.” Sonic’s face had lost all trace of smugness and mischief, and now only held curiosity. “You hit the nail on the head when you told everyone why I hate you. I guess I am kinda freaked out that I could become you. But why do you hate me?”

“Tell anyone else and I’ll kill you. It‘s embarrassing.” Sonic smiled, and agreed.

Inside the car Sally looked up briefly as her superior prey ears picked up the voices, but she soon got back to washing Tails’ cut. The Princess had managed to remove most of her ridiculous dress, but had kept the thin silk under layer on just in case any photographers got her. Tails was leaning with his head on her knee as she gently dabbed the cut. In all honesty she could have had one of the paramedics at the airport do it, but it was nice for her to forget all her responsibilities and simply act motherly. Bunnie and Antoine were in the front with the coyote driving, separated by the soundproof screen so she could have some private time with her son. However, he hadn’t been saying much. Every time she asked him if he was ok he just sighed and gave as short an answer as possible.

“Tails, are you mad at Shadow?”

“No, I’m not mad at him. Its just…” He trailed off not knowing what to say. Sally looked at him and recognized the face, she had seen It many times, though not often on her son.

“Your afraid of him?” She asked, trying to stop herself from sounding shocked. She had thought with all the other things Tails knew his partner had done and accepted, he would never be afraid of him. What had happened must have really left more than an external scar. Tails looked up and Sally saw that at the corner of the young Fox’s eyes tears were forming.

“Does that make me a bad person? To be scared of who I love?” He asked fearfully. She hugged him in a way that made her remember the days where her days were happily filled with caring for her adoptive son, when he was little more than a few years old. Things sure were simpler back then.
“Of course not Tails, Shadow hurt you, its enough to make anyone scared when they’re in that much danger. No matter how much they care.”

“I’m not scared because of what he did to me, I’m scared because of what he might do…” The Princess frowned , wondering what he meant. “I saw his face Aunt Sally, just as he was attacking me. All the hatred in it, but he seemed more machine than alive. He never even blinked.” Sally tried to imagine how it would feel, the idea of HER love trying to kill her. The idea of a stone-faced glaring Sonic swinging a blade at her was disturbing to say the least. “If he can do that to me, what’s he going to do to the average human?”

“Tails, from what Nicole has been able to dig up, Shadow is a machine when he fights. He was trained to fight all his life, he was acting on instinct thinking he was fighting GUN soldiers, not you. Even if that instinct could have gotten you killed.” Sally couldn’t believe she was defending Shadow, if it had been any other time she wouldn’t have. But she needed him. And besides, once they got back to Knothole the relationship would likely crumble, then Tails could go out with a more pleasant man or preferably woman.

“But that’s not the worst part. Even now, I don’t know if he’s wrong to want it. I have no idea how much GUN did to him, he’s just told me a few things and even they would make me want payback. I mean, I don’t know if he is wrong. Maybe, to him GUN is like Robotnik to us.” Tails flinched as Sally applied the bandage.

“Tails-” She began but was cut off as the limo stopped. The hotel was surrounded with reporters.

“We’re here Sal-Gal” Bunnie giggled from the front as she winded down the separating window. “Or do I mean, your Royal ol’ Highniness.”

“I think ze Highniness suits our Princess best, no?”

“Thank you Bunnie, Antoine.” She sighed, they were both as mad as each other.

As she hastily put her dress back on and put away the first aid kit.

“Tails, don’t give up on Shadow.” She tried to finish quickly. “When I met Sonic he was always way, way wilder than he is today. You can’t change a man but dulling bits of them down is always within your power. Maybe you can just work on Shadow… being violent to bad guys.” Sally realised this wasn’t the best advice but she was running out of time. “Now, where are those troublesome Hedgehogs.”

As if answering her, Shadow and Sonic appeared in the seats next to her with a flash. To her surprise they seemed to be in the middle of what could be described as a friendly conversation. Sonic apparently in disbelief about something. However, she didn’t get to hear very much as at that moment Antoine chose to open the door. Rails were keeping them back, but not particularly well. Allowing them to ask their questions. As they walked up a red carpet into the skyscraper of a hotel they could here random questions sent out. Even Tails got a few aimed at him.
“Princess Sally, is it true that you have brought a highly dangerous criminal into the city under diplomatic immunity?”

“Are you confident GUN is going to side with you here?”
“How are you keeping this Shadow Mobian under control?”

“Is it true your pregnant Princess?”

“Shadow, could you describe your crimes to us please?” One reporter asked, grabbing Shadow’s arm and ramming a microphone in his face. Shadow looked down at the arm and the entire surrounding crowd simultaneously took a step back and yet zoomed in with their cameras. Sally kept them walking, they would wait in the lobby, she could sense the anger pouring off of him with that simple sentence.

Shadow turned, facing the cowering reporters. Seemingly five times the size as the Humans in his anger at the words the reporter had chosen. The one man was still holding his arm, too terrified to move. In one movement, Shadow threw him a good 5 metres.

“How dare you call my doings criminal. Not when you Humans are the guilty ones here!” All his words were being captured on television. “I tell you this! I am Project Shadow, created upon the Space Colony ARK five decades ago as a weapon of mass destruction and covered up by your pathetic government. For erasing all that knew me, and destroying all that I might call home. You will pay. By the end of my visit, this city will be burning!!” With that Shadow turned and walked away after the others. Any reporters who tried to follow them in found themselves being shocked by yellow energy that seemed to jump from the pavements. At the back of the crowd Rouge the Bat smiled and flew up into the sky, her inside contacts told her where Princess Sally’s group would be staying in the building, all she needed to do was find the exact rooms.

GUN would be pleased.

----------------------------------------

Terios looked on from the rooftops. Watching the Hedgehog who looked so much like him leave. It scared him. He had no idea how he had even found his way there, but it was more than coincidence that Shadow should be there at that time just when he had stopped moving.

“Terios, come to me.” He heard over his internal radio.

His master was calling, he had to leave. The dark hedgehog walked off, his hands subconsciously stroking the cold metal chest implant. He had no idea what it was for, but it couldn’t ever be good.
