Chapter Four
Sonic threw his third chilidog into his mouth and chewed ravenously while he carried his fourth and fifth in his hands. He was still so freaking hungry! He could never get enough of the damn things no matter how many he ate in one sitting. It was a good thing he ran, otherwise he would have some serious trouble with his waistline.
Mid chew he looked down to inspect his tummy. Still flat, with abdominal muscles showing underneath his fur. He shrugged. What could he say; he had a very high metabolism.
"Thmmank yuar shur!" he managed to say around masticated chilidog in his mouth to the man behind the counter.
The man looked at Sonic as if he was the seventh wonder of the world. Sonic shrugged once again. The guy must be new, as the other one never even batted an eyelash when Sonic finished his tenth chilidog without ever coming up for air.
Oh well, hopefully Amy was making a lot of food for the party. Sonic was still hungry and didn't want to completely fill up on chilidogs.
He walked backwards towards the door, still chewing and still holding onto two extra dogs. He backed up into the door opening it with his butt, and exited the hot dog establishment ass first.
Without looking behind, Sonic turned around and immediately bumped into someone almost causing him to drop one of his last remaining chilidogs.
"Hey, watch where you're going!"
Sonic blinked, ready to lash back at the poor person who had the misfortune of standing too close, when his eyes focused. He saw two puffed up, bushy tails waving angrily behind an orange fox. He sheepishly grinned, immediately dropping his attitude.
"Hey Tails! How's it goin?"
Tails fur returned to its normal state, the puff deflating as his angry mouth turned up into a small smile.
"Sonic!" They moved away from the door a bit further down the sidewalk so they weren't blocking traffic in and out of the establishment.
Tails continued, "Not much actually, I'm just running around picking some stuff up for the shop before the party tonight. What are you up to," Tails raised his eyebrow at Sonic who was chewing furiously, "besides the obvious."
Sonic took one last large bite of his final chilidog and chewed slowly. "Yrghea, Ihm wrhas Hmpgry."
Tails didn't think anything of it as he was used to his best friend's disgusting habits. "Yeah, I hear ya. I'm starving too, but Cream told me I better save my appetite 'cause she was gonna help Amy cook. Actually, she was heading over your place like ten minutes ago."
Sonic swallowed with a loud gulp. He licked his lips before speaking. "First she controls you're diet, what next?"
Tails glared, "Well, you're one to talk! Amy has you wrapped around her pinky finger. You might as well be married."
"We're gonna be... whoops," Sonic clamped his hand over his mouth hoping Tails didn't hear his slip. Too late.
"WHAT?" Tails abruptly shouted. Sonic jumped at him and clamped his hand over his furry friends mouth.
"Now that you've attracted the entire city's attention, promise me you'll stop shouting if I take my hand away?"
Tails nodded. Sonic stepped back.
"Okay…well that was actually supposed to be a surprise. Its what tonight's party is supposed to be about."
Tails laughed, "I won't tell anyone, but holy shit Sonic, you two are finally…." He trailed off when he saw the glare Sonic was directing his way.
"Sorry…but congratulations! How'd it happen by the way?"
Sonic scratched the quills on the back of his head, "I guess I just finally grew up and gave us a chance."
Tails looked around him, making sure no familiar faces were in the immediate vicinity before leaning in to speak quietly to Sonic, "I overheard Shadow talking to Silver the other day about proposing to Rouge…He's really got it bad for her."
Sonic frowned for a moment looking as if he was trying to remember something…
"What?" Tails watched Sonic's face get really focused as if he was deep in thought.
Does he not want Rouge and Shadow to be together? Does he know something I don't know? He really looks like he has something important to say…
Suddenly a noise violently grumbled from the blue hedgehog's stomach. He looked at Tails with a pained expression before blurting out, "Tails, run!"
"What, why?"
Sonic waved his arms; at least he tried to warn his friend. Out of his control, a rumbly gut busting, ear-splitting belch burst forth. Tails ducked for cover.
"Holy chaos Sonic!" Tails exclaimed.
Sonic patted his stomach. "Much better, but yeah, that faker probably doesn't have the guts to propose."
Tails blanched, "That was it?"
Sonic shrugged. "I hope he does go through with it, they're good together. Any who, I'll see ya later, time to run."
"See ya!" Tails shouted at the blue blur that was quickly zooming towards the distance.

Shadow relaxed in his comfy recliner, as he turned on the news, ever aware that he had an angry echidna in his bathroom, who could be tearing everything apart at that very moment. He felt his muscles tense up as his anger began to rise.
No no, must control myself. He hasn't done anything wrong yet. Though I wouldn't put anything past him.
For some reason his mind subconsciously went to Rouge and their conversation earlier that day. She sounded strange; then again, she always acted strange when the red demon was mentioned. He came to the conclusion she either hated his guts or was madly in love with him. What was it she liked to say, "there's a thin line between love and hate?"
He rolled his eyes at himself.
Get a grip Shadow; she's with you, not him. He couldn't help but be a bit suspicious however, as remembered all the flirting and bickering the two used to do, even when surrounded by friends. It was as if they tuned out everything but each other sometimes back then…
Suddenly his cell phone went off startling him out of his thoughts. He let out a breath he didn't realize he was holding and answered the call.
"Shadow."
"We need you downtown pronto."
Shadow rolled his eyes; it was G.U.N. "I'll be there." Closing his phone, he stood up and looked towards his ceiling. He took a deep breath.
"KNUCKLES! I'M STEPPING OUT FOR A MINUTE, I'LL BE RIGHT BACK, DON'T GO ANYWHERE AND DON'T TOUCH ANYTHING, I'LL KNOW AND I WILL GUT YOU!" he shouted at the top of his lungs.
Upon hearing a grunt from above as acknowledgement he was heard, Shadow immediately chaos controlled to where he needed to be, hoping that the situation wouldn't take long at all. He unconsciously fiddled with the small box in his pocket…
Knuckles wiped off the condensation caused from his shower off the mirror with a gloved hand, before taking a step back to observe himself. It had been awhile since he had access to a mirror. For some reason, he never got around to putting one in his house. Apparently mirrors ranked up there with soap on Knuckles list of things to buy.
The first thing he noticed was that the white crescent on his chest seemed to be glowing, once again bright, contrasting with the now fiery red of his fur. His dreads were finally clean as well, once again lustrous and shiny. They also didn't weigh him down as much. He ducked his head under his arm and sniffed. This time he didn't recoil in disgust, he smelled pretty damn good if he were to say so himself. Maybe he should pick up some of Shadow's shampoo to bring back with him.
Next, he raised his arm in the mirror and flexed, smirking as he indulged in a bit of self-vanity. Years spent training, solely because there was nothing better to do besides sit in front of a green rock had paid off. He was in the best shape he had ever been in. His arms were more muscular and defined. His chest was also a bit bulkier but tapered down into a trim waist complete with strong abdominal muscles. He tilted his head as he observed-not too shabby.
Overall, he felt great.
His smirk faded however as he realized it didn't matter how he looked. He would never have anyone to impress, forever alone. Bitterness flooded his system as he tore his eyes off of his figure.
He was destined to be lonely. At one point, he was okay with it...until he realized what life was like off of his island. He never realized how truly gullible he was and how sheltered his life had been. His thoughts once again drifted to a certain blue-eyed bat. Shouldn't he be allowed happiness too?
So involved in his thoughts, Knuckles failed to hear the front door opening and closing downstairs…
