One day, Knuckles walked to his daughter and sat down next to her. "I need to tell you something very important because of recent occurrences."

Midori groaned, "You aren't going to give me the 'Facts of Life,' are you?"

"No! I thought you're mother already did that…" Knuckles cleared his throat, "Anyway, I wanted to tell you about…. your name."

"Ooo! Hooray! I get to learn about why you named me something that makes me seem like a dork!" Midori's voice oozed of sarcasm.

"Shut up and listen! This is important-!!" Knuckles bit his fist and slowly calmed down. "Your name is Japanese. Midori means 'green,' Suishou means 'crystal,' and Rusui means 'keeper.'"

"Oh joy."

"I'M NOT DONE!"

"Eep."

"Okay. Tikal, er, your mother and I named you that because thirteen years ago you were born. My sole purpose in life before was to guard the Master Emerald. But when you were born, I knew I had to do something with it. I was forced to drop out of the Sonic team and store the Master Emerald inside- inside of you."

Midori stared emptily at her father. "Wh-what?" Millions of questions ran through her head. She couldn't concentrate; too much was happening so fast. "Maybe I should tell you something too. I had this dream…" Midori's voice became distant and her eyes seemed hollow. "I walked into the large temple in front of me and found it glowing with green light. There were no walls, just a ton pillars. As I walked toward the center, the light got brighter. I wanted to find its source, so I broke into a run. Suddenly, I sensed someone else running somewhere else, also trying to get to the object in the center. I ran faster, leaning forward. When the light was almost blinding, I heard a breaking sound and bits of greenish glass flew back from the light source, which suddenly fled and left the temple in darkness."

"Oh no…" Knuckles tilted his head down and closed his eyes. "It's worse than I thought. I need to think…" Knuckles buried his face in one hand and waved Midori away with the other.

"Hello, it's me."

"Why hello, old friend. You would never call me unless necessary so, I suppose it's trying to get out, eh? I warned you this would happen."

"What else was I to do? If I just left it, someone would take it and everyone would die!"

"But you can't contain a power so great in one child."

"It was weak when she was younger. I thought that it would grow with her and she would still contain it by this age, but it seems to have grown faster."

"So I'll take her then as we had planned?"

"I suppose, it's best because of the reports of him, right?"

"Yes, I suspect it's his presence that is awakening it. I'll see you tomorrow then."
