Chapter 2: Keylo Meters Prower

Today, my life was forever changed. Everything I knew to be certain seems to be different now. I'm still not sure if I like it better this way or not. Let me start from the beginning; from my earliest memories, anyway. I've always loved my life, even though it seemed odd. First of all, I was adopted at birth, but my parents never told me why. They never told me about my real parents, either. In fact, if it hadn't been for the fact that I'm a fox and they are humans, they probably wouldn't have told me that I was adopted. Despite this, I've always made the best of my life, when I can. I seem to get along with everyone, even antisocial people. It's almost like I know what they are feeling. I can sense their emotions. When I can, I try to help others out with their problems. And there are plenty of problems to help with, especially around where I live…er…used to live. It was a particularly bad neighborhood, and gang violence was frequent. We lived in an apartment building, up on the fourth floor. It was just my parents and me. I wasn't sure why they never told me about my real parents. But we made the best of it, a somewhat happy family.

Things went fine, until one night that is. All three of us were walking across the park. It was late, and we were cutting through the park as a shortcut back home. It was dark, except for the occasional lamp here and there. About halfway through the park, my father heard something. He told us all to stop, so we did.

Me: What is it?

Jim (my father): Something's not right.

Francene (my mother): Keep quiet.

We looked around, and saw three burly men surrounding a small, frail man.

Burly man 1: So, do you have the money, or don't you?

Frail man: I told you…I…I just need more time…

Burly man 2: The boss is not patient. He's given you all the time your gonna get.

Frail man: Please…no…

Burly man 3: Do it.

Burly man 2: Right.

Frail man: Please, I'm begging you!

Burly man 1: Tell it to my gun!

He pointed a gun at him. The frail man was on his hands and knees. The burly man shot him, and the frail man collapsed to the ground.

Burly man 3: Great. Now let's get outta here.

They all ran toward us, not knowing we were there. We tried to hide, but it didn't work. They stopped when they saw us.

Burly man 1: Hey, you guys didn't see anything, did you?

Jim: No, not at all…sir…

Burly man 2: I don't believe him.

Burly man 3: Wait, I've got an idea.

They huddled together, discussing something with each other. I couldn't make out what they were saying. After a few moments, they all turned to face us, each with an evil smirk on their faces. I could tell that they had something bad planned for us.

Burly man 3: I've seen you guys before. I know where ya live.

Burly man 1: And if you don't pay us a hundred dollars a week, we'll take you out, if you get my drift…

Burly: We'll see you tomorrow. No cops, or we'll kill you when you're walkin' down the street.

Burly man 1: Understand?

Jim: Y-yes, sir.

Burly man 3: Good.

We made our way home. We all considered telling the police, but we didn't for fear of being killed. My parents made payments, but each week they wanted more. Finally, one day, they told me everything.

Jim: Keylo, we need to talk.

Me: About what?

Francene: We need to tell you about your past…

Me: Well…okay…

Jim: After you were born, you were separated from your parents, and given to us.

Me: I know…but why?

Jim: Do remember Robotnik?

Me: Yeah, he was on the news not too long ago. But what does this have to do with me?

Francene: You were given to us in the hopes that he wouldn't find you.

Me: Why would he be looking for me?

Jim: He hated your real parents. We were all certain that if he found out they had children, that he would hunt them down.

Me: Children? As in, more than one?

Francene: Yes…You have…a brother…

Me: What?!

Jim: He's your twin brother.

Me: Why didn't you tell me before?

Francene: We were afraid that if you found out…that you'd go looking for him…

Me: What's his name?

Jim: Miles Prower.

Me: Prower? Is that my real last name?

Francene: Yes, it is…

Me: Where is he?

Jim: We're not sure. In fact, all we really know about him is that he's your older brother, but only by a few minutes.

Me: Why are you telling me this now?

Francene: Those men we've been paying…They've gotten more demanding each time…

Jim: We couldn't pay them last time, and I think we made them mad.

Francene: So we wanted to make sure you knew, in case…

Jim: In case something happens to us…

Me: Don't talk like that…Please…You're scaring me…

We all sat alone for a moment, worrying. Then, the men burst through the door. Time seemed to slow down as they rushed in, and attacked my parents. I caught the recoil from one of their punches, and it sent me through a window. I fell several stories, landing in a dumpster. Then I blacked out. The next thing I knew, I was here, in this room.

Dr. Arrow: That's quite a story. Who did you say was your brother?

Me: They told me his name was Miles Prower.

Dr. Arrow: Miles Prow-Oh my goodness…

Me: What is it?

Dr. Arrow: Your brother…is here…

Interesting, no?

Stay tuned…
