Author's Notes:
Now it's time to start meeting people, starting with Scruffy. The story will now be told from a third-person point of view.
Meet Scruffy
Picking up from where we left off with Scruffy, we find him on a rooftop staring at the shadow of a figure on a nearby roof.
Scruffy: Who is that?
The figure made no move, except for the head, which was staring at the street below. Scruffy dashed from rooftop to rooftop, appearing as a blur for a brief moment each time. Eventually, he was on the same roof as the other person, which was now revealed to be a green hedgehog. The gray fox took a step toward the stranger. The hedgehog froze, and turned around. They faced each other with confused looks on their faces.
Stranger: Who are you?
Scruffy: You first.
Stranger: Very well. I'm Scotty the crime fighter. Now, what's your name?
Scruffy: Ferrite. Scruffy Ferrite.
Scotty: How'd you get here?
Scruffy: I have my ways.
Scotty: What do you want?
Scruffy: None of your business.
They looked each other over, each trying to figure out what the other was here for. Scotty then noticed Scruffy's gun. He placed a hand on his Emerald sword, in case he needed it.
Scotty: You're new around here, aren't you?
Scruffy: Maybe, maybe not. What's it to you?
Scotty: I make it my business to know everything I can about this city. So, what do you want?
Scruffy: How do I know you're telling the truth?
Scotty: Because I don't lie. Why are you here?
Scruffy: I don't have to tell you anything.
Scruffy started to run away, but stopped when Scotty asked him a question.
Scotty: What if I could help you?
Scruffy: Hmph. I don't need your help.
Scotty: Hold on!
Scruffy: Make me.
Obviously, this guy was not cooperating. Scotty then realized that the only way to get Scruffy's attention would be to act like him. Scotty took out his Emerald sword, and activated it.
Scotty: Maybe I will.
Scruffy: Maybe you're not as I thought you were. You wanna fight? Fine, I hope you have life insurance.
The fox whipped out his pistol, and fired several shots at Scotty. The hedgehog managed to deflect all of them with his sword.
Scotty: You're serious about this, aren't you?
Scruffy: Joking around is a waste of time!
Scruffy fired several more shots, this time at different areas of the hedgehog. Scotty had to move fast, but deflected them all. He then rushed at Scruffy, and swung his sword. Scotty was surprised to find that he had hit nothing but air. Scruffy came out a dash behind him, pointing his gun at Scotty's head.
Scruffy: Are you ready to die?
Scotty: Not today!
They continued to exchange attacks. It was a battle of experience, and they both had their own ways of fighting. After several minutes, a blue blur streaked into the fight, narrowly missing Scruffy. Sonic stopped, and stood next to Sonic.
Scotty: Sonic, I'm glad you're here!
Sonic: I heard fighting, so I came up to check it out.
Scruffy: So, you plan to double team me, is that it? Very well.
Scotty: Look, I don't wanna fight you. I just want to know why you're here.
Scruffy: And I just want you to leave me alone!
Sonic: You don't wanna fight him?! Did I miss something?!
Scotty: He wouldn't tell me why he was here. Normally, I wouldn't mind much, but he was very hostile.
Scruffy: That's right, and don't you forget it!
Sonic: What's your problem?
Scruffy: You two.
Scruffy dashed to another, higher rooftop next to the one they were on.
Scruffy: We will meet again.
He then dashed somewhere, out of sight. After several moments, Scotty deactivated his sword, and returned it to his belt.
Sonic: What was that all about?
Scotty: I wish I knew.
Several rooftops away, Scruffy stopped to take a break. He placed his pistol back in its holster, and sat down. He was breathing heavily.
Scruffy: Well, that was unusual. It was fun to fight again, though. I just wish I'd been able to finish him off. Maybe I'm getting weak. Can't let that happen, especially with those two around. In the mean time, I should probably keep moving. They'll be looking for me.
He stood up, breathing normally now. After a moment, he dashed to a nearby rooftop. He scanned the area around him from his perch.
Scruffy: I need to find a phone book. I can use that to find this `Miles' guy. Maybe he can help me out with that Scotty character.
He continued to look around, and found a phone booth. He thought about it for a minute, and then dashed his way through the buildings until he arrived there. Ignoring the surprised crowd of people, he looked through the pages of the phone book under `P'
Scruffy: Let's see…Power, Pony, Price, Prince…
He continued to look until he found the name Prower. He memorized the address, and left towards it. It took him all day to figure out the layout of the city, and several more hours to actually find the address. By now, it was dark, and a gentle snow had started to fall. He now stood outside the base, not knowing that it was also the home of the hedgehogs he had faced that morning. After making sure he had the right address, he cautiously rang the doorbell, keeping a hand on his pistol.
Scruffy: Well, this is it…
After a moment, the door opened. Behind it stood a red echidna, with pointy knuckles on his gloves.
Knuckles: Who are you?
Scruffy: That doesn't matter. What I want to know is who you are.
Knuckles: Excuse me?
Scruffy: I'm looking for someone named Miles Prower.
Knuckles: Miles Prower…Wait a minute, do you mean Tails?
Scruffy: Only if his last name is Prower.
Knuckles: Just a sec, I'll get him.
Knuckles walked away from the door, and Scruffy heard him calling for Tails. After a few minutes, a young, two-tailed fox appeared at the door.
Tails: Hello?
Scruffy: I'm trying to find Miles Prower.
Tails: That's me.
Scruffy: What?! But you're just a kid!
Tails: So?
Scruffy: <sigh> I guess it doesn't matter.
Tails: Can I help you?
Scruffy: This will sound crazy, but I'm related to you. There. I said it.
Tails: You're right, that does sound crazy. And what's your problem, anyway?
Scruffy: Rough day.
Tails: If you are related to me, then what's your name?
Scruffy: Scruffy Abunai Ferrite. I'm a distant cousin of yours.
Tails: What brings you here?
Scruffy: You. I found your name in a database on the other side of the country, so I came here to see if you could help me find a purpose.
Tails: A…purpose?
Scruffy: I am seeking a reason to exist.
Tails: Um…okay…do you want to come in?
Scruffy walked in, closing the door behind him. He followed Tails to a lounge room where the others were. They interrupted a conversation between the occupants in the room.
Scotty: So you're saying it was a gray fox?
Knuckles: That's right.
They then noticed Scruffy, who was behind Tails. Scruffy noticed them at the same moment. All three of them leapt toward each other, leaving only a few feet between each other.
Scotty: So, we meet again.
Scruffy: Looks like I was right.
Sonic: What are you doing here?
Scruffy: I came to visit my cousin, Miles.
Sonic: What's he talking about, Tails?
Tails: I'm not sure…Uh…what's going on?
Scotty: This guy was the one that attacked me this morning.
Scruffy: You drew your sword first.
Sally rushed in, and broke up the fight.
Sally: Stop it, you guys!!
Scotty: Stay out of this!
Scruffy: You should listen to him. This could get ugly…
Tails: What are you doing?! Those are my friends!
Scruffy: And they're my enemies.
Sonic: It doesn't have to be like this. We don't want to be your enemies.
Scruffy: It's too late for that.
Knuckles: It's never too late. I learned that, and you can, too.
Scruffy: So I'm supposed to just suddenly become your friend?
Scotty: Not exactly, but the end result is the same.
Scruffy: I'm a loner, thanks.
Sonic: Then why were you looking for Tails?
Scruffy: Because I'm related to him.
Sonic: Yeah, you said that, but how?
Scruffy: I don't know, but it's true.
Scotty: Then why haven't we heard of you?
Scruffy: I grew up in the jungles of South America. <points at eye patch> That's how I got this.
Sonic: What brings you here so suddenly, then?
Scruffy: Long story.
They talked back and forth, and an uneasy truce arose as they did. Eventually, they were sitting down, and talked long into the night. Scruffy told them about his life, and the misunderstanding between them was resolved. After a while, they all went to sleep. None of them knew that tomorrow would bring another surprise…
