Chapter 6

Blood poured in plentiful gushes from his ebony fingers as Shadow touched the thorns on the brilliant ed rose, staining the lively green stem with his crimson and unusually cold life. He didn't even mind the pain, it was nothing to him; it didn't even compare to what he felt in his heart. He was confused, the feelings he felt for Amy were troubling. He hated her, yet he cared for her like an overprotective older brother.

I can't let harm come over her but with my being here harm could be just around the corner. He touched a particularly sharp thorn, allowing it to penetrate his soft flesh, tearing it carelessly and allowing droplets of blood to form around the wound.

Now she hates me… I'm sure of it.

His face hardened as another thorn penetrated his flesh, adding to the overabundance of tiny pricks on his swollen fingers. With a half hearted sigh he released the rose, causing it to fall back into its place on the leafy bush. Almost all the petals fell off the floral from this action, falling to the ground as lifeless as the dull crimson eyes of the person who caused this to happen.

"It seems like death always follows me around. Everything that I touch dies."

"That's not true." He heard a familiar feminine voice say from behind him. Shadow turned around, looking into bright emerald eyes filled with love and compassion. Amy smiled--a sickly sweet one but a smile nonetheless.

"It is indeed factual Amy. I am nothing more than a death omen. You're not safe around me." He stepped back, only to be pulled forward by Amy's strong grip on his shoulder.

"Snap out of it! You are not a bad omen! If you were, I wouldn't have allowed you in my house!"

"But…" Tears began to cloud Shadow's eyes, bubbling up like tiny springs and falling down slender tanned cheekbones like tiny waterfalls. His face began to contort immediately, now resembling a toddler's visage. His dismal expression changed, however, as Amy's lips pressed against his, capturing his attention-and his mouth-in a chaste kiss. Within a nanosecond her lips left his and she ran away, leaving a very stunned (and very confused) Shadow in her wake.

Shadow touched his lips-now rosy and tingling, which matched his cheeks-and smiled, watching Amy's retreating figure disappear in the house.

"Man, she didn't even accomplish what she set out here to do."

"Man, I didn't even accomplish what I went out there to do!" Amy thought out loud as she walked inside the house, shutting the glass door behind her. The lively décor of the kitchen loomed before her, cheering up Amy's now low spirits with its cheery s. But it did nothing to quell the feeling of ambiguity that resided in her, eating away at her heart like a caterpillar on a leaf.

Why did I kiss him?

She thought about it more, questioning her actions until her head pounded in pain. After the self inquiry session was over she stumbled out of the kitchen, one hand grabbing hold of anything that would support her and the other clutching her aching forehead. Saliva dribbled out of her mouth, pouring from her pen lips and falling onto her red cotton dress. Her vision grew blurry as she sought out her bedroom, the pink satin draped dwelling seeming almost impossible to get to in her current state. Blurred figure of Chinese vases adorned with intricate patterns of gold leaves spun around her as she broke into a brisk jog, darting into the hallway on wobbly knees. She saw flashes of pink down the hallway-which seemed longer than usual-so she started to run towards the knowing that the plush comfort of her bed was near. But her body thought otherwise. Her knees gave away, causing the disoriented girl to fall down to the plush carpeted ground head first. Her surroundings grew even more blurry as she tried to get up but could not find the strength to do so.

"Shadow?!" she called weakly, trying to summon the dark hedgehog to her aide but receiving no reply. She called his name again, once again receiving no response. Darkness was beginning to cloud her eyes but she tried to fight it but nothing she seemed to do did any good. With a weary sigh Amy finally gave up her losing battle, lying back down on the ground and letting the impending darkness come over her. Just before she lost consciousness, she heard Shadow's teasing laugher, soft and infrequent, but there nonetheless…
