War of Hearts
It had been three days since the plant girl Cosmo had crashed on their planet and Tails had no word of Sonic. Every time he went to visit Cosmo, he had to look her in the eyes and tell her that he hadn't seen Sonic. Tails suspected the hedgehog and gone on another one of his ridiculously common vacations around the world. Cosmo was fairly disappointed that Sonic hadn't been seen, nor that she hadn't the strength to find him herself. She continued to lay injured at the Rabbit's house, but thankfully, she wasn't alone. Amy went to see her a few times, the first time demanding to know whether or not Cosmo wanted Sonic for a relationship and Tails saw her everyday.
Over the many hours of the three days Cosmo had been here, Tails was beginning to find himself making great friends with Cosmo. The girl had relaxed in his presence and spoke to him a lot more freely than she first did when they first met. Either way, Tails found himself drawing closer to Cosmo than he ever did to Sonic.
Tails went out searching for Sonic in the evenings via the Tornado 2, his own plane, despite Sonic's previous claims that the original Tornado was better. Every day it was the same, no sign of his blue friend. He would often ask Amy if she had seen him, as she often pursued the hedgehog's affections but even she had no word of him. Tails was beginning to lose patience with the hedgehog. Trust him to take a vacation.
The third day Cosmo had been there, Tails visited like he did everyday so far. He settled by the bed and watched her progress and slowly heal. Tails was telling Cosmo about his and Sonic's adventures together and began talking about the time when they first met Knuckles.
“So this `Knuckles' was tricked?” Cosmo asked in an interested tone.
Tails laughed, “Badly, but he always gets tricked at some point… that's the only problem I can find with Knuckles but he's a great guy… I think the reason he's so gullible is because he's been alone for a long time.”
“Alone…” Cosmo muttered, “I know how that feels…”
Tails looked up at her and saw a sudden fear in the girl's eyes, almost as if she was seeing something totally different to her surroundings. Cosmo began to shiver as she recalled a nightmare always prior to her mind. The same two tall lanky figures, with venomous glares that could probably kill the extremely weak-willed, fangs dripping with saliva and filth surrounding their slimy bodies. But the worst part of the nightmares was those eyes, one a deep blood red, the other a poisonous yellow. Cosmo began to shake as she saw it all happen again and she was unable to prevent it.
“Cosmo!”
Cosmo shook her head, once again finding herself in the bedroom she'd been housed in for over three days now. Tears began to prick at the corners of the girl's eyes, and she began to cry freely. Tails glanced at her in shock as the girl broke down in front of him.
“Why couldn't I stop them?” she began to sob, “I could've saved them!”
Tails didn't have a clue what she was talking about, and tried his best to comfort her. Cosmo continued to cry, “That's why I have to find him… to stop them from killing more people… he's the only one who can stop them…”
Tails was beginning to have a vague idea of what she was talking about. It was serious if it involved a series of deaths. The distressed girl had clung onto Tails for dear life now, fearing that if she let go, she'd become another victim of the figures from her nightmare. Tails could do little more than stroke her leafy hair and whisper sweet nothings to her, which somehow made Cosmo feel warm and safe. Tails took the opportunity to gently pull Cosmo off of him and look into her eyes, which were blurred with tears.
“Cosmo, tell me… what's wrong? I can't help if you don't tell me…”
Cosmo began to wonder how harmful it would be to tell Tails the dreaded truth. He had already become a friend, trustworthy and kind to her at all times. But Cosmo had another voice in her head nagging her, telling her that only Sonic must know, and that Tails couldn't be trusted.
“I-I'm sorry… but I can only tell S-Sonic…” she sobbed slowly, expecting Tails to react loudly and aggressively. But he didn't. He just brought her in for a hug, his fingers wiping stray tears away. Cosmo clung to him, hugging him tightly, almost cutting off his air supply. Tails managed to pull her off him gently again, stroking her fringe out of her face.
“I'll find him… I promise you…” he whispered as Cosmo continued to sob into his melon fur.

Shadow wandered the countryside, needing to clear his head. He nearly stumbled on a rock but managed to push himself up on his feet again. He glanced around, narrowing his eyes to try and glance through the darkness. He had needed air from the crowded streets and from his apartment. Watching television wasn't a very interesting thing to do. He preferred to wander outside and think about various things. The peace and quiet was doing him good.
A rustle was heard over a nearby hill, causing Shadow's ears to perk up and listen very carefully. He picked up the sound again and narrowed his eyes, beginning to run up the hill as fast as he could, matching Sonic's speed. He skidded to a halt and squinted ahead. Nothing. Shadow growled, half-hoping it had been something. Little did he notice the figure sneaking up behind him.
A pair of arms covered Shadow's eyes, immediately taking the black and red hedgehog by surprise, causing him to swing his fists about, hoping to hit whatever it was.
“Now that ain't any way to treat a lady.” a sly, seductive voice sounded. Shadow sighed and grumbled as the figure revealed itself to be none other than Rouge the Bat.
“Hello Rouge.” Shadow said in a quiet voice that showed he wasn't in the mood. Rouge came into view in front of Shadow and glanced at him, a smirk crossing her face. The bat girl had changed in six years, more so in appearance. She still wore less than appropriate attire that showed off her body, making it more appealing to males passing by. She still wore make-up but had begun using blue eye shadow again since she didn't really like the pink anymore. Her eyes were still that aqua colour that contained knowledge and cunning within and the fur on her head was still a milk white colour.
“Good to see you too, hedgehog.” she said in a sarcastic voice, hands planted firmly on her hips.
“What do you want?” Shadow growled, getting straight to the point. Rouge sighed. That was so typical of Shadow, gets straight to the point without considering feelings.
“I'm on a night time stroll, like you.” she responded with a rough edge in her voice. Shadow grumbled lowly, “So you decided to join me?”
“Why not? Who knows, things could get interesting…”

Tails had left the Rabbit's house, while Vanilla managed to sooth a constantly sobbing Cosmo into sleeping. Tails had been reluctant to leave her behind but he knew she needed Sonic as soon as possible. He now settled into the seat of the Tornado 2, scouring the lands for the blue hedgehog he had to find. Tails had little hope in finding him for Sonic moved so fast it was almost impossible to catch sight of him and even if he did manage to see him, he'd be gone in seconds.
Tails was beginning to grow tired and wanted to turn in for the night but something pushed him to keep going. He remembered Cosmo's tears, and how scared she was and knew the situation was serious. The two tailed fox flew over a large field, annoyed at the fact that Sonic took a really bad time to take a vacation. Tails made a mental note to hit him when he got back.
Tails almost dozed off until he saw a blue blur cross the hills and stop at the sight of the Tornado 2. Sure enough, Sonic appeared with his trademark grin on his face, smirking at Tails above him. He gave him a thumb's up as Tails landed the Tornado 2 to greet him.
“Hey Tails, how's it going buddy?” Sonic asked in a cheerful tone. Obviously the few days away from the worries at home and Amy had put him in a good mood.
“WHERE THE HELL HAVE YOU BEEN!” Tails yelled, unable to hold back his frustration anymore. Sonic looked taken aback at Tails' sudden outburst, clearly not expecting his two tailed friend to react like that.
“Chill bro I was down south for a few days.” Sonic said, winging it. Tails' face was set in a frown and he had his arms folded, not a good sign. Clearly, Tails wanted more of an explanation.
“OK,” Sonic sighed, “I had to get away I was stressed, what with Amy always on my tail and everything else…”
“Yeah well… sorry I yelled but you chose a really bad moment to go on vacation… we've got trouble!” Tails said to him, calming himself down.
“He's right you know… you do…” said a menacing, evil voice, a smile appearing on his hideous face.

Amy Rose settled on her sofa, the cushions hugging her and a warm mug of tea in hand. The pink hedgehog had just switched the television on not caring what channel was on. To be truthful, she wasn't even watching it, but instead gazing at the many photos she had of herself and Sonic. She settled her cup onto the table, reaching for the nearest photo of Sonic and her together. She stroked the picture of Sonic, who was fifteen at the time the photo was taken. She herself was twelve and she did look it.
Amy sighed; slumping back in the chair… how could she ever get Sonic to feel the way she did? It seemed almost impossible to get her blue hero to notice her. Whenever he saw her coming, he'd run for the hill and that made Amy begin to lose confidence that he'll ever love her. At twelve, it was so easy. Chase him and try to get him to notice you. True, she did forever claim that she wanted him to marry her, but it was all for fun, for flirting. She never meant anything by it. Sonic couldn't commit, it wasn't his style.
'Maybe I should just give up on him…' Amy thought to herself, 'He obviously doesn't want to be anything more than your friend…'
Amy sat up, a new feeling of resolution coursing through her. She had made up her mind. No longer would she chase Sonic and try and attract his attention. No longer would she flirt with him in the ways that probably scared him off. No more.
“It's over…” Amy muttered before putting the picture in the nearest drawer.

Sonic and Tails whipped around to face the one who had confirmed Tails' statement about being in trouble. Tails almost fainted at the hideous sight in front of him. Sonic narrowed his eyes and made out the figure before him.
It was tall, most likely male and hideous on every aspect. It had blue, slimy skin that covered his body, a loincloth around its waist and the ugliest hideous face ever to be seen. Very few hairs hung from his head, a large wonky nose not even set in the middle of the face, hideous yellow fangs dripping venom and blood red eyes. The creature wore a cloak around its body, as if it were some superior.
“Who are you!” Sonic yelled out to the creature, who said nothing. He instead snapped his fingers, causing Sonic to raise his eyebrow and glare at it, but before Sonic could yell again, he heard a muffled wailing from behind him.
Sonic quickly turned and gasped to see an identical creature to the first, only without a cloak and with yellow eyes containing poison and venom within. It had a wicked little grin on its face as it had a slimy hand on Tails mouth. Sonic growled, “Let him go!”
The fingers from the first creature snapped again and the one holding Tails captive held his other hand forward, twisting its hand into a gun shape. Sonic gasped in horror as he realized this creature had turned its own hand into a weapon. Sonic stole a glance to the first one and glared, “Who are you!”
The figure walked closer to Sonic and the blue hedgehog felt fear as it approached. The creature lashed out at Sonic but he managed to dodge the blow. Sonic landed on his feet and gazed up at the blood red eyed demon.
“I'll ask again… who are you…?”
The demon shook his head and pointed at its counterpart, who still held a struggling Tails. Sonic saw the pure terror on Tails' face and found himself glaring straight back into the blood red eyes of the first creature.
“If you want to save your friend, you'll do what we say, hedgehog.”
“So you do talk.” Sonic said shortly.
“Indeed I do…” the creature began, “Now do as we say or your little foxy friend over there will be no more.”
Sonic growled, still trying to figure out the situation. So many questions he had and very few answered. What were the creatures? No doubt they were dangerous. He glared at the blood red eyed demon, “How do I know you're not going to kill him anyway?”
“You have our honour, he is of no threat to us,” the creature raised his right hand, “Now hurry up hedgehog, or my brother Skull will wipe your little friend out.”
The yellow eyed demon called Skull pushed his gun-hand further into Tails' head. Tails tried to scream, but it was muffled through the slimy hand that was covering his mouth. Sonic began to feel fear pulse through his veins as he began to understand that they would seriously kill Tails without a care or a worry. If he made a move, they'd blow his brains out. If he didn't they'd still blow his brains out. Sonic clenched his fists, at a loss for what to do.
“Clocks ticking hedgehog, now what's it going to be?”
