Chapter Ten: Much Needed Training

Alex slept more restful then she had in a long time. Maybe it was because of the excessive power-usage, maybe it was because she finally came to terms with that face that the two super-heroes who had saved her so many times where also her best friends… or maybe it was the fact that she had fallen asleep in Gear or Richie's arms…
She opened her eyes and groaned her body sore from the drain of the night before. She rolled over and saw a note laying on her night-table. She picked it up and smiled.
“Alex,
Meet us at the junkyard near the gas station…
Gear & Static”
She grinned and rolled her eyes, they didn't have to put their hero handles now… she shrugged and went to take a shower. After she had bathed she dressed and almost tripped running down the stairs.
“Alex? You sound like a horse galloping down the stairs would you slow down?” Her father called from his “den” Alex snorted in indignation at the suggestion that she wasn't as graceful as ever… even though she did almost break the stairs and her neck. She grabbed her motorcycle keys and shut the door quietly so not to disturb her father.
She hopped on the bike and sped away.

“Bro wouldya quit pacing? You're making me dizzy…” Virgil said as he sat on the hood of a busted up car. Richie gave him a look but did as he was asked. He sat down on the car next nearest to him and sprawled on the hood. Moments later they heard the roar of a motorcycle approach. They looked up curiously and almost fell off the hoods of the cars.
Alex parked her bike and leaned forward on them, eyeing their shocked faces with amusement. “What? Haven't you ever seen a girl straddling a motorcycle before?” she asked slyly. They composed themselves and hopped off their cars. Richie put a hand on the motorcycle and eyed it with great interest.
“How fast can it go?” he asked looking up at her. Alex was able to stop herself from blushing yet again at the intense gaze Richie gave her even without meaning to. She smirked.
“Fast enough for the cops to not bother me…” she said and explained to them when they looked at her baffled that often cops don't chase after you if you go over 100 miles an hour… (Umm I'm not sure if that's true here in America but I know it is in Japan!). They gawked; she grinned and hopped off her bike. “Relax I wasn't going that fast… today…” she added.
“You're wild girl.” Virgil muttered. Alex shrugged,
“What can I say? I like me my machines fast…” she said and stretched her arms over her head.
“So how-come you don't ride this beautiful machine more often?” He asked and Alex shrugged.
“My dad's got me on motorcycle restrictions…”
“Ahh” both males said.
“So what are we doing here?” She asked and looked at them bother. Richie and Virgil glanced at each other before turning back to her.
“As promised, were going to help you.” Richie said simply. Alex blinked, trying to understand what he meant then she remembered what problem they where talking about. She sighed and leaned against her bike.
“Are you sure you guys are up to it?” she asked. Richie stepped forward, a determined look in his eyes. The kind of look he got when he was trying to figure out a complicated-technological problem.
“Absolutely.” He said with finality, leaning closer to her with his hands on either side of the bike, effectively pinning her. Alex's breath hitched at the closeness of his face and body. She was so spellbound by his eyes that she didn't even register the blush that colored her cheeks. She took a deep and shaky breath and let out slowly.
“O-Okay then. If you insist…” she said, looking away diffidently. Richie pulled away and smiled. Alex nodded and smiled back. About two hours later Virgil and Richie were able to convince Alex to use her powers even if there was no danger around. At first all she could do was shake whatever she tried to lift but she would look at the patient and knowing smiles of her friends and try harder. Eventually she was able to lift a car above their heads, a soft red glow around her and extending to the lifted car.
“Good, good hold it steady…” Virgil instructed, watching her concentrated face and glancing at the now shaking car above them. Alex gasped, feeling her powers drain but happy they didn't leave her altogether like they had many times before. She gritted her teeth and slowly lowered it to the floor so it wouldn't damage them or the shack nearby. Once the car was safely back on the ground however and felt her legs give out.
Alex was expecting to feel the hard dirt under her as she fell but instead fell against something warm and strong. She tilted her head up and saw the Richie had caught her just on time, his glasses askew by the quick movement. He smiled at her and helped her on her feet. With his body pressed behind her and his arms practically securing her from moving she felt her heart hammer and her face flush.
Richie straightened his glasses and tilted his head in a way that told her to look forward. She did so and saw a pile of cars where the single car had been and Virgil dusting his hands off. She looked at them and they smirked.
“We know you can do it Alex… you just need to concentrate… if you can do this then there's no reason why you should loose your powers anymore, you don't have to be afraid of them if you can control them…” Virgil said in an easy, patient way. Alex had never thought of it that way, she was always afraid her powers would consume her and kill her but he was right.
She took a deep breath and used Richie's firm hold to help steady herself. He released her and watched her raise her hands again. She thought for a moment then lowered a hand. She knew that would make it harder but she had to, one day she might have to help them and not have the use of her arms… She took a deep breath and set her eyes on the pile. At first the cars would just shake violently but slowly they began to lift. Beads of sweat ran down her face and her arm trembled. She panted and her heart accelerated. Soon the cars were a good five feet above the ground. She felt a sudden spike, she didn't know if it was adrenaline or determination, or even her power but the cars were suddenly six feet higher then before.
And that's when she collapsed. She could not hold that much weight, volume, dimension and mass with her mind with so little practice. She was once again caught by Richie. He held her against him and sat on the ground with her, letting her rest against him. “Maybe we should call it a day V, she's worn out…” he said looking up at his partner. Virgil smirked and nodded.
Alex once again woke up in Gear's arms in her room. They had apparently went in through the window this time though. She looked around but didn't see Static. She looked up at Richie, her head still reeling with the fact that this incredibly fit and dangerous man was the same sweet and gentle Richie. She cleared her throat to both compose herself and catch his attention. He stopped and looked down at her.
“Where's Virgil?” she whispered. He smirked.
“His dad had called him on his cell and had him go home for something.” He explained. Alex nodded and let him carry her to her bed.
“You didn't have to carry me home you know… you could have waiting until I woke up…” she muttered. He almost scoffed.
“And risk you catching a cold or letting you sleep on the dirt? I think not!” he said dramatically. She smirked.
“I wouldn't have slept on the dirt though would I?” he asked, watching a blush darken his visor. “I didn't think so…” she added with a grin as he placed her down and removed her shoes.
“Sleep.” He commanded. She frowned.
“I'm not sleepy…” she protested. He smirked.
“You collapsed and blacked out, I think you're a little tired… just a nap ok?” he almost pleaded. She sighed and lay back on the bed. He watched her with a satisfied look then pulled her covers that were thrown over the side of the bed over her. He was about to get up and leave but she caught his wrist.
“Wait… stay?” she asked drowsily. He blushed but relented to her request. She scooted over a bit and he sat against the head-board of the bed with her head on his leg as she fell into deep sleep. He smiled down at her and caressed her cheek like he had the first night they met as Alex and Gear, watching her sleep.
