Chapter Nine: The Truth Comes Out…
----------------------------------------------------------------- --------------------------------------------------------------------------- --------------
Alex was having a bad morning; first she couldn't find her other shoe, then she remembered she hadn't done anything to prepare for a speech and now she was running late to school!
“Shit shit shit shit!” she cursed under her breath as she sped down the street on her slightly banged up bike. She had missed her ride with Virgil and Richie after nothing could wake her up. She groaned when she saw them still standing their waiting for her even when the late bell had rung four minutes ago. She nearly through the bike and sprinted to them.
“I'm SO! Sorry!!” she panted. They shrugged.
“S'okay, let's just go sign in at the office.” Virgil said and headed in. Alex gave Richie a sheepish look.
“He's mad at me isn't he…” she asked. Richie smirked and shook his head.
“Naw! He's always cranky in the morning. Come on let's go.” He said and walked with her through the school entrance. The three signed in, receiving lectures from the attendance lady and strolled down to their class. They put up with yet another lecture from their teacher and sat.
Alex was startled awake as Virgil shook her arm. “Hey are you okay? I've never seen you sleep through class…” he said. Alex sat up and rubbed her eyes cutely but without meaning for it to be.
“Great… my day couldn't get any worse…” she muttered then cursed her luck when the teacher handed back tests and she got a big fat D. She groaned and slammed her head on the table.
“Careful! You'll hurt a pretty face!” Richie said with a cocky grin. Alex half-heartedly glared at him and playfully shoved him with her arm.
“No horsing around Ms. McCoy.” The teacher called. Alex sighed and slumped against her chair. The school day dragged on that day, she almost screamed with joy when the last bell rung and everyone piled out of the school.
Alex walked with the two by her side. Richie brushed his hand against hers “accidentally” and smiled when she looked up at him. She smiled back and turned to look straight a head again, a blush flushing her cheeks red. `Man I've been blushing a LOT since I started coming to this school…' she thought. The three ended up spending the rest of the afternoon playing fighting games at Alex's house. The boys were not that surprised anymore to find she had an whole different variety of the best games for the 360.
Currently they where playing the newest mortal kombat game; Alex was able to win against Virgil a lot more then she did with Richie. He was just too distracting, then again she would distract him as well. When ever he was about to strike she would brush her foot against his leg and he'd stop tapping the buttons.
`Who knew I had an effect on him?' she thought and her heart raced with the idea of him liking her. Soon the afternoon went by them quicker then they would have liked. Virgil and Richie were sad to go but said their goodbyes and headed off. Alex watched them go from her bedroom window and sighed. `Why do they always have to leave so early?' she pondered sadly. Suddenly she heard her radio she had left on speak of Meta-human activity. The only reason she heard it was because she had trained her hearing to pick up on certain words… meta being one of them.
“It's time to see if I can control my powers yet.” She said to herself and dug under her bed for a metallic casing. She opened it and her black and red suit shone brightly with her bedroom light. She closed her door softly and shut her curtains. She stripped and began slipping on her “battle suit”. Once she finished placing her helmet snuggly on her she opened her window and jumped out.
The drop did not hurt because she knew how to fall from a certain distance. She sped into the night, ready to help fight the threat of the city. When she reached the crime scene she gasped. The purple-ish shadow known as Ebon was raiding an old warehouse looking place, pulling out heavy looking containers.
Static and Gear were already there. She watched as Static shocked Ebon then dodged a blow from Ebon's elongated arms. Gear threw what looked like a metallic ball and she gasped when an explosion went off where the ball had been (The new and very improved Zap-Caps!!). She watched them fight off the monster in her eyes and gasped once again when Ebon knocked Static roughly toward the ground then ordered someone in the shadows to attack Gear. She recognized the young punk a mile away. The orange hair boy grabbed Gear and quickly tied heavy looking ropes around him.
Ebon ordered something to the orange haired boy and he ran off. Ebon grunted in annoyance and picked up a large trash container. He was about to send it crashing down at his enemy when suddenly it flew off his hands and hit him in the face. He dropped to the ground with a groan and looked up at his attacker.
“Who the hell are you?” He asked roughly, rising again.
“Ion” she said he sneered at her.
“Well consider you power mine!” he said recognizing her and launched at her. She gasped and put up her palms, stopping him in mid fly. He grunted as he strained against her and she gritted her teeth as she tried her best to hold on. Static's eyes fluttered open and he saw Alex, or rather Ion in a mortal struggle against Ebon.
Ion gasped in pain as her power back fired and shot through her body. She fell and struggled to get up again but she was temporarily paralyzed from the hip down. Ebon chuckled as he felt himself get free and drifted toward his paralyzed prey. All of a sudden he yelled in pain as electricity surged through him. Ebon fell unconsiouse and Static limped to Alex's form.
Gear had been shocked as he watched all of that happen before his eyes. He struggled against the thick ropes and tightened his muscles, he yanked his arms out and forcefully broke from his restraints. He got up and rocketed to Alex. Alex was panting and trying her best to move her legs. She growled in anger, angry with herself that she failed to contain and control her power again, and angry that she was once again helpess and saved by the Static and Gear.
Said hero landed near her and went to reach for her.
“Take my hands.” He said softly. She jerked away from him and shook her head.
“I'm fine. Go away I don't need your help.” She said in frustration, not willing to let herself look weak or need help.
“Well, you can't move can you? Let us help you move at least…” Virgil said taking a step toward her. Alex almost hissed and glared at them.
“I said I don't need you help! Leave me alone!” she said and looked away from them. Gear wouldn't take no from her, he care for her way too much to leave her helpless on the ground where Ebon could wake up any moment and do God knows what to her.
“Let us help you!” Gear said almost growling as he reached for her, she jerked away from him even if her heart screamed for her not to, `Why does he have to look so much like…' she stopped that trail of thought and growled right back at him.
“NO!” Alex said with just as much force. Gear knelt closer and extended his hand again, not willing for her to reject help knowing how much she needed it.
“YOU WOULDN'T UNDERSTAND!” She yelled. Gear glared and pulled out the booklet she had been looking for and all but threw it at her.
“I think I would.” He said in quiet seriousness. Her eyes widened as she stared at the leather covered book on the floor.
“How did you-” she began but he interrupted her; his gruff voice becoming soft... She thought she remembered hearing that silky voice from somewhere but she once again pushed the preposterous thought of Gear being the guy she was falling in love with, even if she denied it, from her mind and looked up at him as he spoke.
“You dropped it the second day you were at school… when w-Richie and you bumped against each other… He uh showed it to me and I knew I had to help if I could…” he explained, hiding the blush from almost letting his secret identity out and the memory …and the fact he took so long to tell her.
“Why didn't he tell me?? And… why didn't you tell me?” she asked softer now.
“Well… whenever I, I mean whenever HE tried he panicked… and I didn't want to tell you until I knew how to help you” he said unable to hide his blush now and glad that his helmet hid it for him. `Man I better be more careful…' he thought. Alex frowned and shook her head.
“This changed nothing…” she said grimly and turned away. He stepped forward with a growl.
“You're wrong, it changes everything.” He said and pulled her up, holding her up at arms length. She gasped in pain and hissed.
“Let me go! I don't need your help!” she snapped. Static who was near by in stunned silence suddenly snapped out of it.
“Look, we know what you are and what you're afraid of… we can help, please Alex, we're your friends!” he said. She tilted her head to the side curiously. How did he know her identity? And what did he mean by friends… they hardly knew each other… Gear gave Static a look and that's when Static realized his mistake. “Uhhh… I mean…” but gasping, Alex interrupted him, suddenly recognizing his voice and his way of acting immediately.
“V-Virgil?” she assessed with wide eyes, wondering why she never noticed before. Virgil lowered his head in defeat. Alex gasped and jerked her head to the boy holding her up, her eyes widening even further. `No! It c-couldn't be… but…' she thought, “I-If he's Virgil then… you're….” she lifted her trembling hands to his helmet slowly. Gear made no move to stop her.
Alex lifted the helmet and pulled it off. Her green eyes met the gorgeous ice-blue ones that she had lost herself in many times before. She gasped again, her theory being proved correct. “R-R-Richie!” she exclaimed in shock; a lot of things made since now, like why they always had to leave early and chase after cop cars… Richie gave her a soft smile, making her already thrashing heart beat even faster against her rib-cage, threatening to give her a heart attack. He nodded in response.
“So now you know who we are and we know who you are… don't you see Alex? We can help you!” he reasoned, almost in a pleading way that made her want to melt in his arms. His eyes where shining and his grip on her relaxed to a gentle hold; Alex's head was swimming and she gazed at him with a dazed, flushed expression. She was too stunned to answer but was able to nod numbly.
Richie let go and she slumped against him, her blush spiking when she could feel the very obviously chiseled muscles under his tight uniform. With a little effort Alex pulled her arms around his neck and let him help her, ignoring that fact that her super-hero-savior--turned-love-of-her-life was the same person and she was draped against his body.
Ignoring his flustered feelings and blush Richie lifted her effortlessly in his arms, cradling her close and jumped up with her gently, letting his rocket-skates power up to life. She gasped and tightened her hold on him. He smiled both sheepishly and furtively. “Hang on…” he muttered and shot out through the warehouse.
Static followed closely, watching the flustered teens in amusement. Alex shut her eyes tight and pressed herself closer to Richie's or Gear's body. Richie tightened his protective hold on her and nuzzled her hair. “You're safe…” he whispered softly in her ear in the same husky, sexy tone she loved and craved from the first time she heard him speak. He felt her relax in his arms and snuggle against him making his rapidly beating heart threaten to beat clean out of his chest.
“I know…” the muffled murmur sounded from his chest. He looked down at the angel in his arms and smiled. Virgil watched this entire exchange with both heart-felt warmth that his best-buddy had finally found someone and envy, silently wishing his relationship with Daisy wasn't so rocky….
