Ticket to the Future: Part XIII

Redemption

Knives wrapped both hands in my long hair and pulled me all the way down on his length. I gagged momentarily as I felt his jism burn the back of my throat. He groaned above me in pleasure as he came. The bitter, vile taste filled my mouth. I had no choice but to swallow. He never turned loose until I had.

Gasping, I fell back on the floor. How could I have not seen his true nature? I had spent enough time in the past following Mr. Vash to know that Knives was an evil being. But, he'd been nice enough when he'd awakened. I should have seen through his veiled sarcasm, his cutting remarks. I had been naive enough to think he'd change and that maybe… I didn't have to be so lonely without Wolfwood.

Instead, his hatred of people was strong enough to destroy any chance he might have had for redemption. He was insane. I hated him. Something had to be done to stop him before he could carry out whatever evil plans he had.

Wiping my mouth with the back of my hand, I glared up at him. Knives was smiling evilly down at me with that icy light in his eyes. "Well, Milly. I must say I continue to be pleased with you. It really is amazing that you have learned to give me pleasure so quickly."

Climbing slowly to my feet, I glared down at him. "I hate you."

"Yes, you say that every time you leave my room, but you always come back the next night."

"I don't have a choice, you made damn sure of that."

"You have free will, exercise it now. Don't come back tomorrow night."

"And if I don't, you will try to hurt people that I care about. How can I not come back?"

"True, but you can take the chance. Maybe I won't harm your friends, or everyone else."

Snorting in his direction, I turned to leave. "Oh, Milly, do be a dear and take care of yourself. It is almost time for the birth of your offspring. I have waited for many months for this event. My plans are almost ready to take flight."

"You keep saying that. Why are you so interested in my children?"

"Why Milly! Haven't you guessed yet? I intend to raise your cubs as my own. Under my personal guidance, they will become the most depraved killers on this planet. In short, they will help me carry out my plans for the extermination of the human race."

Numbness swept through me. "I won't let you do this evil thing. I will find a way. I swear on Wolfwood's grave. I will find a way to kill you."

Knives simply chuckled evilly and continued as if he hadn't heard me, "As soon as I realized whose offspring you carried, I knew I had to have them. You are uncommonly good with that stun gun of yours and Wolfwood was possibly the only person on this planet who could have matched Vash in a quick draw. The cubs you carry will have an inborn ability to handle weapons. It's bred into them."

Horror threatened to overwhelm me. My breath caught in my throat, I couldn't breathe. Blackness swirled up around me, my vision faded. I had one final thought as I sank slowly to the floor, "Wolfwood… help me…"

Meryl was sitting near by as I came to. Cautiously opening my eyes, I saw the glare of the morning sun filling my room. I sat up in bed, aware of a cramp in my lower back. How did I get back here?

"Oh Milly, I'm so glad you're awake. Dr. Jones came by earlier to see how you were. What happened? Why did you faint?"

Meryl's face was etched with concern. I couldn't tell her because she'd run straight to Mr. Vash and then he would probably shoot Knives and then it would be my fault. I couldn't let him do that. He had trouble dealing with killing Mr. Legato even though he didn't have a choice. How could I put him through the pain of shooting his own brother?

"I'm not sure," I answered her carefully avoiding eye contact. Looking up, I smiled in an attempt to soothe her fears. "I guess I maybe over did it a little last night."

"Why do you go to him Milly? How can you bring yourself to do it? Knives is a terrible individual, responsible for a lot of deaths on this planet. And why now, especially when you're so close to giving birth?"

I hastily wiped away the tears in my eyes. "It's ok. I… it's something I have to do." "Don't tell her the truth… someone else will die…"

"Are you sure Knives isn't threatening you in some way?" I could hear the accusation and suspicion in Meryl's voice as she asked.

"It's ok Meryl, I do have the right to choose my own path in life." My back cramped again.

Sighing in defeat, Meryl looked at me for a few moments. "Ok. Keep your secrets for now. But please remember Milly that I am your friend. I will help you no matter what."

I nodded my thanks and watched Meryl rise from her chair and head for the door. "Meryl? Please wait. There is one thing you can do for me." She was instantly at my side again.

"Anything for you Milly. Just name it."

"Promise me… Promise me that if anything ever happens to me you will take my babies to December."

"Wait a minute… Babies? BABIES? What do you mean BABIES? And December? What the hell is in December?"

I smiled at her disbelief. "Twins… and Nicholas' orphanage. Promise me that if anything happens to me, you'll take them there, you and Mr. Vash. Don't let Knives anywhere near them if I am gone."

"But Milly, what could possibly happen to you? I think you are just nervous because it is so close to the time for the birth. Why didn't you tell me you were going to have twins?" She smiled at me in a reassuring manner.

Grabbing her hands in a fierce grip, I pulled her closer to me. "Promise me you'll do it."

"Ok, Milly. If it will make you feel better. I promise Vash and I won't let anything happen to your children." I relaxed my grip on her hands.

"I'd like to rest now please."

"Ok, Milly. You rest. Vash and I will look after things for you."

Meryl left the room quietly. I lay there a few more moments thinking about my course of action. Knives was not going to hurt my children or anybody else on this planet. Meryl could not stop Knives, even with her supply of derringers because they were just too small. Mr. Vash couldn't bring himself to kill anyone else no matter what the reason. Wolfwood would have killed Knives, but he was already dead. That left only me and I knew what I had to do. I was going to kill Knives.

************

I shut the door of Milly's room quietly. What had Knives done to drive her to this point? Her eyes were haunted. They no longer glimmered with a constant smile. Dark circles had formed beneath them. And every night, I heard her softly tread down the hallway to Knives room. What was he doing to her?

Vash would not let me interfere. It had caused a terrible strain on our relationship. I wanted to stop Milly and he said let her make her own choices. Everyone has the right to decide for themselves what path in life to take. But what if Knives were holding something over her head?

Rounding the corner and entering the kitchen, I came face to face with a monster. It angered me to see him sitting there so casually sipping a glass of wine. "What the hell have you done to upset Milly?"

"Why nothing at all Meryl. Has Milly said anything to you?"

"No, damn you. She keeps insisting everything is fine. But I can tell she is troubled by something."

Rising from the table, Knives turned toward the door to go. His gun was at his hip. "Perhaps you should listen to her then. It is unwise to delve into things that do not concern you."

I followed him outside. This time, I was not letting him go this easily. "What the hell do you mean by that? You are forcing Milly to go to your room every night. What hold do you have over her?"

Whirling on me, Knives pinned me to the wall. His hands were on either side of my head. "Milly is not your concern. And while she has learned the finer points of oral pleasure, it's not the same as being able to shove myself inside a warm body."

I gasped softly. "You are a monster."

"No, I am a superior breed of being. But perhaps, you would like to start entertaining me at night. You must be adequate at least because my brother has kept you around this long."

I shoved at his chest, trying to get away.

"Let her go, Knives."

Knives turned to face Vash. I darted around him and sought refuge behind Vash. "Are you ok?"

"Yes, I'm fine. But Vash, he's done something to Milly."

"Well, Knives what do you have to say for yourself this time?" Vash's voice was cold and emotionless. For some reason it reminded me of the time he had defeated Monev the Gale.

"My dear brother, what do you want me to say. That you and I are a superior breed of beast? That I intend to destroy every one on this planet?

Both are true statements."

I felt Vash's body tighten slightly. "What about Milly? What have you done to her?"

"I have done nothing at all to Milly… at least nothing that she didn't invite on herself. I intend to raise Milly's cubs as my own. In a few years time, they will be the most powerful killing machines on this planet. They will help me rid the world of these wretched humans."

I found my voice again. "And just what do you propose to do with Milly? She will never willingly surrender her children to you."

"Oh yes she will. She will do anything I tell her to in order to ensure their survival. And I intend to rebuild the Gung Ho Guns. I will surely find a few more depraved humans to take the place of those that were killed. Who knows? Perhaps one of them will display such remarkable skill with a gun that I will permit him to breed with Milly so I can raise another killer."

Knives stepped out into the street to confront Vash. A crowd was gathering along the opposite sidewalk. A hush had fallen over the town. Vash motioned for me leave his side. I hurried away to the side of the street.

"You knew it would eventually come back to this, Vash. We can not both live with our opposing views. One of us must die. I think it will be you. You cannot kill because of Rem's incessant meddling and preaching about living and life being sacred. I think I will kill you today. But don't worry, I'll be sure to take good care of your Meryl for you."

Time stopped. No one moved. It was as if everyone here were frozen in place. The town waited with anxiously held breath to see what would happen in this final showdown.

"Not now… please not now. I have to end this. I have to stop him for good… I have to have redemption for the wrongs I have committed…" Wrenching pain encircled my middle and threatened to rip me apart. I had to go outside and stop this madness or everyone here would die and my children would be left to the mercy of a monster.

Clutching the Cross-Punisher to my chest, I made my way silently down stairs and out the back door. I had to get out into the street. I had to stop Knives. Uttering a silent plea to God and Nicholas, I made my way up the alley and stepped into the street to confront Knives.

***********

"I told you that I'd kill you if you even thought about harming my children. You can leave here now or I will shoot you." The pain was getting worse. I knew I wouldn't be able to stand much longer. I pressed the indention of the Cross-Punisher. It neatly converted into one large gun.

"Milly, don't be stupid, go back into the house. You will await my pleasure and I teach you what it means to obey."

Mr. Vash had a look of pure horror on his face. "Please Milly, go back inside. You will get hurt out here."

I silently shook my head. "This is something I have to do."

A fly buzzed in the stillness. The townspeople held their breaths. I stood frozen in place unable to move the tiniest inch. I watched in horror as Milly, Vash, and Knives stood there, silent, waiting, and watching each other.

A sharp cry broke from Milly's throat. As one the three of them drew. I screamed in the stillness. Shouts sounded from the other townspeople. Three guns came in line with their targets. Time stood still for a split second. To my disbelief it appeared that Milly was the fastest of the three.
