Twilight Fan Fiction ❯ Gray Areas ❯ Dreams ( Chapter 1 )
"Emma! Mary Beth! Get in here quick!" I hear 15 year old Tessa yell from the other room and I pick up little Mary Beth heading quickly in to the other room.
"What's going on?" I ask her and I sit Mary Beth down on her cot.
"Miss Wilks is here," she says quieter and she eyes the door.
I groan. Miss Wilks is the social worker who comes by our orphanage every month to check that everything is going as it should. However, her and the orphanage owner, Miss Harper, have person problems with each other and Miss Wilks jumps at any opportunity to try and shut us down and put all of us girls in foster families. I refuse to go into the system ever again. "Where's my pictures?" I whisper frantically to Tessa and she points underneath the bed.
I breathe a sigh of relief. The door suddenly opens and we all glare daggers at the old hag standing before us. "Back so soon?" I ask her smirking and she glares back at me.
"You need to teach that one there to watch her tongue Miss Harper," she says disgustedly.
"I have a name," I tell her rolling my eyes but Miss Harper gives me ' the look ' and I drop my eyes to the ground not continuing with what I had planned to say to Miss Wilks.
"How many girls do you have staying here?" she asks while looking down at a sheet of paper.
"Someone needs to learn how to count," Violet whispers to me and I chuckle, immediately receiving a glare from Miss Wilks.
"There's six mam," Miss Harper tells her before the lady has a chance to yell at me.
She writes down some things on her sheet of paper as she wanders around the room. After a five minute brief around the room she leaves and Miss Harper closes the door behind them. I chuckle again and high five a few girls.
"I hate that woman," Violet groans and comes to sit on my bed.
"Don't we all," I say to her and ruffle her red curls.
I sigh and pulls out my pictures from underneath the bed and start hanging them up again. "Still don't know who he is Emma?" Jenna asks me and I frown.
"Yes and no," I tell her and Wendy laughs.
The little six year old skips over to me and jumps into my lap. "How can you know someone you don't know?" she asks me shrugging and I laugh.
"Well I know him but I can't remember who he is."
Wendy slaps her forehead and shakes her head at me. "Oh I know, what a weirdo," I say laughing and tickle her sides.
She giggles and jumps off my lap and over to sit with Mary Beth. "Where do you think you met him?" Tessa asks me.
I laugh inside. These are questions they have asked me over a hundred times and I never had a better answer than, "I don't know."
"Well, it had to be before you came here. Miss Harper never lets boys come visit us," Violet says and I can see the disappointment in her eyes.
I smile. "Aw you poor baby," I tell her and she sticks her tongue at me.
I look back at the pictures and get lost in a daze. She was right, I have to admit that. I must know him from somewhere before I came to the orphanage. Sometime before my parents were killed in the hospital fire. Sometime before I mysteriously made it out of the hospital without a scratch on me and unconscious.
I look back at the paper in my hand. The whole paper is black except for one single face in the middle of the page that seems to glow so bright the darkness is nothing compared to him. Someone knocks on the door and I jump worried that Miss Wilks is back and will see my pictures. Having a dream every night for over 7 years about a guy you don't know is one thing. Drawing his face on a ton of papers over and over and hanging them around your bed, is another thing.
I let out a breath I am holding when I see that it is only Miss Harper. She walks inside our room and smiles to us, making her eyes squint up and nearly disappear underneath all the wrinkles. "Hello girls. Emma, I love you dear but you need to watch that mouth of yours," she says with a chuckle.
I smile sweetly and shrug my shoulders. "Dinner is ready girls. Miss Sanders made some soup and sandwiches for you," she says excitedly and we all follow her downstairs to the dining room to eat.
Miss Sanders is the cook that Miss Harper hired to make our meals since she was never that great in the kitchen. After dinner we all take turns showering and brushing our teeth in the two bathrooms, then go to our room to turn on the radio; our little night time ritual. I walk in just in time to see Stacie, Aime and Jenna dancing and singing into some hairbrushes and I giggle at them shaking my head. They all truly are like my sisters.
"Your turn Emma!" Wendy says excited and bounces over to me.
I pick her up and smile at her. "There's commercials on silly, I can't sing to a commercial."
Mary Beth comes up and start to tug on my nightgown and I look at her curiously. "I like your songs better than the radio Emma," she says and I laugh while I set Wendy down on her bed.
"Why don't we let everyone have a chance to sing and then I'll sing when everyone is settled in their beds ok?"
She nods excited and hops into her bed. Each of the girls take turns jumping around and dancing to the songs on the radio until Miss Harper knocks on the door four times; signaling to us it's time to go to sleep. We turn off the radio and everyone lays down in their beds.
"Emma, you promised," Stacie whispers to me and I smile.
"Ok, I know don't worry," I say and I smile to her tucking her into bed.
After being here for 7 years, I sort of took the role as the big sister that takes care of them all when Miss Harper isn't around. "Everyone lay back and go to sleep," I tell them and I climb into my cot pulling down one of the pictures from above my head. If only I could figure out who he is, why I keep seeing him.
When I hear the girls stop whispering I keep my promise and sing them to sleep.
They didn't have you where I come from
Never knew the best was yet to come
Life began when I saw your face
And I hear your laugh like a serenade
How long do you want to be loved
Is forever enough, is forever enough
How long do you want to be loved
Is forever enough
Cause I'm never never giving you up
I slip in bed when you're asleep
To hold you close and feel your breath on me
Tomorrow there'll be so much to do
So tonight I'll drift in a dream with you
How long do you want to be loved
Is forever enough, is forever enough
How long do you want to be loved
Is forever enough
Cause I'm never never giving you up
As you wander through this troubled world
In search of all things beautiful
You can close your eyes when you're miles away
And hear my voice like a serenade
How long do you want to be loved
Is forever enough, is forever enough
How long do you want to be loved
Is forever enough
Because I'm never never giving you up
[SONG IS LULLABY BY THE DIXIE CHICKS]
I drift off to sleep and have my same dream, like always. Everything is black and I feel so scared. I try to scream but no sound comes out. And then I see him. The darkness starts to fade away and he looks down at me, his face looking even more beautiful than the night before.
The dream starts to change, and I start to sweat. I try to turn my head but he stops me. I look up at him and see the fire on the ceiling above him.
I sit up with a jolt and look around the room. "Wake up! Wake up!" I yell and I jump out the bed to shake the girls out of their sleep. "Wake up Tessa! Violet! Jenna! Wendy! Mary Beth! You guys please wake up!" I yell and they rub their eyes.
"Is it morning?" Wendy asks and I jump up and down.
"No! It's not!" I yell and they look at me like I'm crazy.
I hop on to Tessa's bed and shake her awake. "I know who he is!"
She sits up quickly and they all run towards Tessa's bed asking questions all at once. They stare at me waiting and I grin looking up at the pictures. "He's the guy who saved me from the fire at the hospital."
