After finally being able to fall back asleep I dream yet about about the beautiful hero. I wake up the next morning with a smile on my face and when Miss Harper comes in to wake us up she is surprised to see I am awake. "Oh my, Emma. You're awake early?" she says and looks at me curiously.
"I know who he is Miss Harper!" I tell her and I jump out of bed to go hug her. She looks at me waiting for me to go on and I look once again at my pictures. "He's the one who saved me from the fire!" I tell her and I hop up and down. "I'm gonna find him Miss Harper. I'm gonna thank him," I smile softly and Miss Harper frowns.
"Emma..."
"I will. I know I will. I have to."
"Emma, it won't be that easy."
"Why? I already know what he looks like."
She frowns yet again. "You know what he looked like 8 years ago dear," she says and she tucks a strand of hair behind my ear.
I look back at the picture and frown. I was so sure I would find him, but I refuse to give up. No matter what it takes, I'll find him. We wake up the rest of the girls and they are all as excited as I am that I found out who this mystery man is. I don't want to shatter their excitement.
After breakfast the phone rings and Miss Harper's face immediately lights up. After hanging up we look at her waiting and she smiles her smile that makes her eyes disappear. "Cindy is going to come and visit," she says excited and we all smile.
Cindy is her granddaughter. She used to be here all the time visiting but ever since she entered high school she's been to busy. Though, Miss Harper never goes a day without bragging about her beloved granddaughter. According to her, everyone in the town knows her and everyone seems to love her as much as Miss Harper.
We all head up the stairs and get dressed in our nicest clothes before Cindy arrives. Just as I finish putting Mary Beth's hair into a braid the door opens and Cindy smiles at us. She has cut her long blonde hair to her shoulders and it is now straight as a board. Though, her bright blue eyes haven't changed a bit. "Hi everyone!" she announces and we all get up to hug her.
We catch up a bit and she is in the middle of telling us about her boyfriend when her voice trails off and she looks at my pictures. "You know him?" she asks me and I look at her confused.
"Know who?"
"Edward?"
"Um. I don't know? Do I?"
Cindy chuckles and points at the picture. "That's Edward isn't it?"
My mouth drops and my heart stops beating. She waves a hand in front of my face to snap me out of it. I can't seem to breath and I look at Tessa for help.
"Emma dreams about him every night. She thinks he's the one who saved her from the fire," she explains.
"I don't know about that, but I am sure of that picture, that face. It's Edward. He plays the piano at a little restaurant the next town over."
I grab my chest trying to remember how to breath. Wendy tugs at my shirt and asks me if I'm okay. I nod my head slowly and then look at my pictures. "I have to see him," I manage to say.
She chuckles. "There's no way Mama is going to let you go," she tells me and I shake my head.
"I don't care. I have to; you don't understand," I tell her and I plead with my eyes for some sort of help.
She sighs. "Mama is going to kill me for this," she says and I jump up hugging her.
She chuckles and looks at Tessa. Tessa reads her mind and closes the door and turns on the radio.
"I'm only here for a night, so if your sure about this you need to go tonight."
I nod my head anxiously. "I'll go now!" I announce and she laughs shaking her head at me.
"We have to be smart about this. Hold on," she says and pulls out her cell phone.
She talks to someone for about 10 minutes before hanging up and calling another person. When she finally finishes with that phone call I go to ask her a question but she calls yet another person. Finally, she hangs up and smiles at me. "It's set," she says and I stare at her confused. "My boyfriend, Steven, is going to park at the end of the street tonight. Your going to sneak out and run down to his car. He's going to take you to my friend Emily's house. You'll stay there for the night. Then, Steven's brother Kyle will pick you up and bring you down to the club. He'll wait outside and after your done he'll take you back here."
I smile and hug her yet again. "But you need to understand Emma. This is the only night we have. If he's not there, or something goes wrong, that's it. Mama will kill us all and put us on lock down, there will be no chance of doing it again."
I nod my head. I know in my heart I will find him, that this will work. It has to. "Girls," Cindy says and glances around at all the girls.
They sigh. "We know we know, don't tell Miss Harper."
She chuckles and I thank them all. I go about the rest of the day trying to stay as calm as possible. The second I finish with my dinner, I rush to the bathroom to shower and get changed before anyone else even finishes. After I'm through in the bathroom I skip up the stairs to the bedroom and see Cindy sitting on my bed. She smiles to me. "All your things are packed," she says handing me a little bag and I hug her again.
She hides the bag underneath my bed and plays around with her phone. "What time does Mama usually come in and say goodnight?" she asks me and I think for a minute.
"Around 10?" I say unsure.
She nods her head and plays with her phone again. "Steven will be here at 11:00PM sharp."
I nod my head and feel butterflies in my stomach. One at a time the girls come up the stairs and give me tight hugs. We dance around to our music again until the 4 knocks on the door are heard. My stomach explodes and I feel light headed. We all get into our beds and Cindy lays on the extra cot at the end of the room.
I chew on my lip anxiously and Tessa smiles at me from her bed. After what seems like ages Cindy finally tells me it's time. I get up quietly and grab the bag from under my bed. I kiss each of the girls foreheads and give Cindy a tight hug.
After a small wave they wish me luck and I open the door quietly. I walk down the stairs holding my breath and head to the back door just as we planned. I open it slowly and close it behind my as quietly as possible. Once outside, I make a run for it to the car at the end of the street.
"Emma?" the guy in the front seat asks me and I nod my head. "Get in," he says and I climb in the passenger side seat.
I take a look behind me at the Orphanage. I know when I get back I won't ever see outside that building until the day I turn 18, but it will all be worth it. I look at the guy and he smiles at me and shakes his head. "Crazy girl," he mutters and I smile looking up at the stars.
Here goes nothing.
We arrive at the girl Emily's house. She is waiting outside her door and waves to Steven has he drives away. "Emma?" she asks and I nod my head.
She hugs me slightly and I can feel the goose-bumps on her arms from the cold weather. "Come on inside," she says and smiles leading me inside the house.
"Your parents don't mind?" I ask her curiously.
She shakes her head. "Their out of town until next week. My aunt is staying with me and I just told her you were a girl from school."
I laugh slightly and follow her up the stairs to her room. Once she flicks the light on I can get a good look at her. Her hair is even darker than mine and it reaches all the way down to her butt. Her eyes though, are such a deep shade of green they almost look fake. She calls someone on her phone and she smiles at me. "Yeah, she's here. Everything okay there still? Alright good. Yes, I'll call you in the morning before I send her out. Oh yes I was just thinking that. Okay, that sounds like a plan I'll get right on it. Bye."
She eyes me strangely and I chew on my lip not sure what is going on. "We need to find you something to wear," she says simply and I look at her confused.
"I am wearing something?"
She chuckles. "No I mean, for tomorrow. For when you go meet this guy."
"Why?" I ask her confused. What does clothes have to do with meeting someone?
She laughs and shakes her head at me as she heads to her closet. After a few minutes she finally hands me a blue, turtle neck sweater along with a jean skirt. I look at her unsure and she pushes me into her bathroom to put it on.
I sigh and try on the clothes look at myself in the mirror. "Ah," I say to myself, finally realizing why I need to freshen up.
My hair is damp and frizzing and my eyes are red from lack of sleep the night before. I look at the outfit however, and I feel pretty for the first time in my life. I open the door revealing myself to Emily and she smiles at me. "Perfect," she says. "Now go ahead and go to sleep, you look exhausted."
I smile thankful and change back into my nightgown before I lay on the floor. She laughs loudly and I look at her worried. "You can sleep in my bed, you don't have to sleep on the floor," she says laughing and I can feel my face turn bright red.
"Oh, right."
I climb into bed with her and she smiles. "Night," she says and closes her eyes.
"Can I ask you something?" I ask her after a few minutes.
Her eyes open and she looks at me curiously. "Sure."
"Why are you helping me? I mean, you don't even know me and you're letting me stay here, letting me wear your clothes and sleep in your bed," my voice trails off and I look at her reaction to see if I have said anything wrong.
She chuckles. "Everyone deserves a chance at their guy," she says simply. "And besides, if Emily thinks your worth all this risky business you must be."
I smile softly before my face turns red again. "Oh, it's not like that. I mean.. I don't wanna... be with the guy or anything.."
She laughs and shakes her head. "Then why are you going through all this?" she asks me smiling softly.
I think about it for a minute and then roll over to look out the window at the stars. Why am I doing all this? I'm going to be in so much trouble with Miss Harper. I am going to get all the girls in trouble for helping me. All for a guy I don't know. A guy who probably isn't even the guy who saved me from the fire. I sigh and fall into my sleep, only to be taunted by his face yet again.
Tomorrow, I finally decide, I will discover all the reasoning behind this. Why I have to see him and meet him so badly. Why I dream about him every-night. Why I can't close my eyes without seeing his face. I'll find out tomorrow.
