`Is somebody here? I know someone's in here!' Utena pushed the rotting wooden shed door as far as she could with all her might. This was no easy feat for a nine-year-old. The rusted chain was broken and swung like a broken arm through the door handles, she tracked in dirt from the garden under her slippers Utena walked into her father's old workspace the full moon illuminating her mother's gardening tools, ceramic pots stacked within one another, dusty seed packets on shelves, sacks of cement, rakes, brooms, and the garden hose coiled high like a great beehive. The hollow rattle of paint cans resonant from the corner and a flap of the paint spattered yellowed drop cloth over her father's workbench fluttered. `Are you in trouble?' The person Utena knew was cowering under there refused to answer. `I want to help you. Are you hungry?' She heard the gurgle from his stomach. `I'll be right back!' Twenty minutes ticked by and Utena returned with a tray, two tall glasses of rice milk and a sandwich, Italian chocolate hazelnut spread between two thick slices of bread. She took a glass for herself and waited with her back turned seated on the floor. The tray was unhurriedly dragged under the drop cloth. The milk and sandwich were consumed and the tray slid back out. At the corner of her eye Utena saw the huddled figure pushed to the far end against the wall. The boy was dressed in the finest of fashions, pinstriped grey slacks, black crushed velvet vest, a white twill billowy-sleeved shirt, and polished black loafers. His hair long enough to brush his shoulders concealed his face. `What's your name?'
; The ceiling came into focus quickly and Utena was paralyzed from the shoulders down. Her body was as heavy as a sack of wet cement and her eyelids were as dry petals of plaster when she blinked. “Don't try to move,” a voice from above said. When Utena attempted to turn her head a blast of pain clenched her neck. “I told you not to. It'll be a couple of days until you'll be able to walk.” Utena had little choice but to close her eyes again. Ruka discarded the syringe he used to inject Utena's treatment into her IV. Anthy adjusted the drip on the saline bag hanging on its steel rack. She shut the door softly after them and walked into the kitchen. Ruka put the kettle on and took down a pair of mugs from the cabinets above the stove. “Care for some tea Himemiya-san?” She removed a jar from her briefcase and placed it on his table.
; “Please understand that I must decline, sempai.” He shrugged and dropped an orange teabag into his mug and put the other away.
; “You're taking a great risk coming here to help me Himemiya-san.”
; “On Saturday nights it's easier,” she alleviated Ruka's fears. “Saionji-sama and I both have appointments to keep.” The kettle piercingly whistled, Ruka lowered the flame and sat it on a wooden cutting board then poured the hot water into his cup.
  ; “Yes I remember.”
; “Don't forget sempai, you have to dilute that in either a broth or tea twice a day for Tenjou-sempai.” Anthy instructed Ruka pointing to the teal glass jar.
  ; “I won't. Oyasumi.”
She bowed. “Oyasumi nasai.”
; More than a week would go by before Utena returned to class and Anthy paid several more visits to Ruka's private dorm. He wore a groove into his living room floor forced to cancel his fencing class, dressed in his white Seitokai uniform he staunchly refused to conform back to the sickening Ohtori teal boys uniform. His jacket trimmed in midnight blue, double rows of coin buttons, red and gold epaulets and red braid. When he first reported to the Seitokai he distinguished himself openly challenging Touga wearing an all-white uniform, a privilege only given to the president. They were masters of their respective art but it was startling to find Touga in the fencing team locker rooms just as he was about to shower. Ruka was afraid that he might be upset at his uniform contrariwise Touga seemed amused. His jacket was hanging open shamelessly naked underneath, Ruka was the proverbial doe caught in headlights. `Can I do something for you Mr. President?' And Touga nailed him. It marked the end of adolescence for Ruka. Touga's embraces, kisses, and passion were sincere but he loved nothing. Ruka's virginity was swept away in an undertow of tenderness misting in the shower steam they swam in. And when he woke in Touga's pink satin bed beside the somnolent redhead it was over. `Who's your daddy now?' The final blow the President delivered came that night when Juri met with him openly in her dorm for the first time, her roommate was away and all was going to plan when there was a knock. There was no ignoring it and the interloper simply pushed in.
; `I apologize for the intrusion. But I haven't given you my congratulations… or my gift…' It was a 100-foot dive into a glass of water when Touga pushed open the door further, and Ruka was prepared to fall on his sword for not showing more pluck. He stripped off his jacket flinging it on his sofa as Himemiya stepped in. “Thank you for coming on short notice.”
; “Her fever still hasn't broken?” There was no sense in answering her; Ruka instead led her into his bedroom. The bed was stripped save for the fitted sheet that was soaked through from Utena's sweat. Her chest rose and fell shallowly from the sedative, she was shrouded in a stretched out grey Euro Disney T-shirt and shackled spread eagle to the posts. Anthy touched her forehead with the back of her fingers. “She needs medical attention.” Ruka paled slamming the door.
; “And then she'll be left wide open! You didn't forget that wonderful display of strength for the world to see during the soccer game last week, I trust?”
Anthy shook her head adamantly. “This is the nature of things and sometimes we are caught over our heads. We must move Tenjou-sempai, and this Tsuchiya-sempai is an order.” He closed his eyes knowing Himemiya spoke the truth. The Bara no Hanayome shook her stick at him forcing Ruka to hang his head and shuffle his feet. They acted quickly so as not to rouse suspicion, Himemiya changed Utena into one of her nightdresses and Ruka wrapped her in a thin blanket setting her down on his sofa as they waited for dusk.

Sliding in and out of consciousness Utena felt a sudden tilt in the earth followed by a heavy drop. By the crushing lethargy to her skull they were riding an elevator going down. On the gondola's wall framed in glass was a carbon butterfly that looked more like a Rorschach test, on the adjacent wall was a perfectly preserved mint leaf.
  ; `Deeper… go deeper.'
; Seated on a Louis XIV chair Utena wore a uniform she didn't recognize and Touga once again dressed in black stood before her.
  ; `Touga.'
&n bsp; `Utena.'
&n bsp; `Himemiya, what is she?' His tone was neutral as though they were discussing the weather. Absent was his sensuality and cunning.
; `Why do you want to know? Do you want the power of eternity, is that why you want to become a prince?'
&n bsp; `No. You wouldn't understand.'
&n bsp; `Do you understand the concept of this game? Anyone that possesses the Rose Bride will excel to the castle in the sky where they will be coroneted and take the power. And do you know why? Without a prince this world would be destroyed.'
&n bsp; `You're wrong.' Touga didn't respond. `There is no prince, at least not in the flesh.'
&n bsp; `Why do you say that?'
&n bsp; `Because… I killed him.' Utena's tiny, wet feet couldn't hold onto the grass and she toppled into the bottomless blue.

; Bent over a sterilized table in a dark room smelling of ash and formaldehyde, the young man adjusted the knobs on the high-powered microscope for a clearer focus. The trickle and rift of recycled water in deep hydroponics tanks broke the tight silence making the first of his two guests shift uncomfortably in his seat. A door opened and an attractive youth of Indian ethnicity resembling Himemiya Anthy strongly enough to be her younger sibling set down a golden tray and slowly filled four tiny cups with French vanilla coffee. The steaming brew mixed with cinnamon and cream permeated every room. Removing his shaded spectacles the young scientist curled a fist under his narrow chin.
; “Well?” Ruka asked replacing his cup on its saucer.
; “Omoshiroi,” the scientist whispered more to himself. He picked up the topmost Petrie dish from a tall cylindrical stack as he seated himself with his guests. His shoulder-length hair was only a hue lighter than the girl's sleeping in the next room and his eyes were a jaded, dull russet that expressed incurable disillusionment. The red gel lining the bottom of the shallow plastic was streaked with white, he opened it for all to observe. “An interesting strain of the virus. Tsuchiya, are you certain that she is mixed?”
  ; “Positive.”
Their host addressed Himemiya. “Might you know her coloring then?”
; “My best guess isn't a guarantee, sempai.” She sighed. Mikage Souji, the reclusive prodigy who never left Nemuro Memorial Hall preferring the closed quarters of his lecture theater to work unobtrusively on his research and give his prominent Mikage Seminars and only to his chosen few via personal invitation. His companion, Chida Mamiya the exquisite Indian adolescent was the only person known to have close contact with him. While the nature of their relationship was enigmatic, it was doubtful anything inappropriate was being done. There were no such labels such as “gay” or “straight” in Ohtori, Utena became aware of other interesting phenomena regarding sexuality amongst her kind. Catching the errant wisps of conversations particularly one between two members of the boys' kendo team. Saionji was known for displaying extreme prejudice when selecting and recruiting kendoka for his team, strictly clan- no humans. He also had been accused of sexism since he was a fierce opponent of a co-ed kendo team; while he had no issue with the girls' kendo team or mixed competition he would not subscribe to personally training women. Touga adopted the same program during his time as captain but it was not overt. Loitering around the dojo's entrance after practice two team members dressed in gis and hakamas shot the bull about a girl.
  ; `Pretty poison, my friend.'
&n bsp; `Yeah… but I can't get her out of my head.'
&n bsp; `Good for the ride, but you know how some of these bitches are…'
&n bsp; `What? Are you out to please them, or yourself?' And then they stopped seeing the girl in question giggling with a friend walking down the hall.
  ; `Konnichi wa Saeka-san, Chieri-san!'
They tittered powerfully upon recognition. `Konnichi wa, Kaname-kun! Jouta-kun!' The one with platinum hair bound in a stubby ponytail she addressed as Jouta stepped forward to finger a lock of teal hair from the girl on the left.
; `We still on for Saturday, Chieri-san?' He blatantly caressed Saeka with his eyes and Chieri didn't seem the least perturbed. Utena leaning behind a fat pillar pushed her head out enough for anyone to spot her pink bangs took a closer look and discovered why. Chieri was checking out Kaname at the same time. That evening following fencing practice she stayed behind with Ruka in the empty hall and questioned how much sex he engaged in. His bloated spluttering face said enough, and Utena did regret questioning him so intimately. But after emptying a pitcher of ice water Ruka responded:
; `It's what I've never understood about human society. Your body is something shameful and sex is an absolute evil. YET you celebrate the billionth birth in morbidly impoverished nations such as India, the divorce rates are staggering, teen-age pregnancy is rampant, STDs and AIDS, children abandoned by parents, need I go on? What you may refer to as indecency, to us it's just puberty. Look, Utena, it may sound cornball to you but I look forward to my golden anniversary with the one I love.' He never divulged the identity of that person but Utena didn't prod any further. Instinctually she knew it had something do with his befriending of her. Possibly everything. There were no good girls, bad girls, good guys or bad guys. Everyone got a piece of the action until they chose their mate, such a lifetime commitment warranted close reflection and experimentation. Every girl was eager to please and every guy wanted to take the top spot in that arena. So it was fair to say everyone carried on like Kaoru Kozue and Touga.
; The black rose signet cut an impressive shape on the table Mikage's party was seated at from the stained glass skylight and once again Ruka crossed his legs. Mamiya refilled the cups for the second time and Ruka wondered why he was never given a signet like his companion Mikage. Of course the recluse genius played by an entirely different set of rules, the Black Rose Society served its own purpose by fulfilling its own ends not Sekai no Hate's. Unlike the platinum that the Student Council members' rose signets were fashioned from, the Black Rose Society members' rings were made from ebony stone and they were headquartered at Nemuro Memorial Hall. But one duelist was no different from the next. “So Tsuchiya, I heard you aren't attending the council meetings.”
  ; “Correct,” Ruka nodded.
; “Am I to presume you're out of the game then?” Questioned Mikage. Ruka finished his second cup and gestured for Mamiya to pour him another.
; “Never make presumptions Mikage-san, about anything,” and he turned his attention to Himemiya feeding a cookie to her mouse, “or anyone.”

; All she was told after her release from Nemuro Keikan by that pretty young boy in the deep rose uniform was that she had caught a bug floating around campus and she would have adequate time to catch up on make up assignments. Nonetheless, something smelled a bit ripe to Utena. Sitting in the rose garden uncaring if anyone saw her or wanted to pick a fight over it she was concerned about the head injury she received from Wakiya. Shouldn't she have been brought to a hospital? Wouldn't she still be in the hospital? Nothing made sense, there was not as much as a scar left on the back of her head nor did she even suffer from a headache. She felt fine! Too fine. The first warning bell went off and Utena was on her way to first period, she stopped short as she heard her name droning like a mantra but no student in the corridors looked her way let alone spoke her name. Crystal clear and loud enough to be alongside her Utena sheepishly walked the last few steps and opened the door to first period history. Clustered before the blackboard was a herd of students, collectively gasping, laughing and pointing at the message written in bright pink chalk:
; “TENJOU UTENA HEADLINED AT A SOAPLAND IN ROPPONGI.”
; Utena didn't feel her briefcase unhook itself from the finger she usually carried it by over her shoulder. Making tracks before anyone noticed she ran for cover into the biology lab that coincidentally was her second period class.
; “TENJOU UTENA HAD AN AFFAIR WITH A TEACHER IN HER OLD SCHOOL AND TWO ABORTIONS.” Anxiety washed over her embittered heart as she read the second lie printed on the whiteboard. The dry erase markers and erasers had vanished from the ledge, there was nothing for Utena to do but run. Hiding in the sports equipment shed after discovering there were messages written in all of her classes, each getting more explicit, she was at a loss. While there may not have been a silver lining she was certain as to who was responsible for this, wiping her tears she left the shed after the final bell rang.
; Knowing Ruka would be less than pleased she went to his office and broke into the glass cabinet where he kept the sabers. She chose the heaviest one; the golden hilt was cambered and incised on the pommel was a French inscription. Utena was a woman on a mission; she moderately hoped they were alert to her presence treading down the corridor and before she lost her nerve banged the shoji open with such effortless force she heard the oak frame splinter.
; “What the hell is it now?!” Saionji exploded. Anthy barefoot on the dojo's floor dropped the teapot she was filling from a hot water thermostat in the corner. Out sidled Touga from an adjoining room that had no partitioning doors and leaned against the frame. Both were robed after a presumably strenuous kendo training session. “What do you want Tenjou?” Either Anthy was a superb actress or she was genuinely terrified.
; “The two of you,” she looked at Touga to include him, “are lower than shit.”
; “What did you say?” Saionji rasped, Touga looked more than pleasantly surprised.
; “You can tear someone to bits with your teeth, cut them up with your nihontou, fuck them until there's nothing left to stick that,” Utena sneered pointing to Saionji's crotch with her sword, “into but jelly.” Touga licked his lips. “But I don't tolerate lies.”
; “I do not know what the hell you are on about Tenjou! But I assure you if you do not leave, be prepared.”
; “Save you bullshit Captain. I challenge!” Touga dropped his arms from his chest and Anthy's emerald eyes goggled. Saionji belly laughed like a sheik whose harem went on strike.
; “Onna no baka! Who do you think you are challenging me? One of that half-breed Tsuchiya's whippets? Clear out Tenjou, or I won't be as forgiving unlike that night in the rose garden. Didn't think I knew about that did you? Or would you like a lesson as well? I think you could use it more than Anthy…” He inoffensively turned as if he were walking away when he abruptly brought down his shinai through the air expecting to clout Utena's temple. “NANI!” Both of her hands clasped the datotsubu, Saionji got a clear view of her rose signet on her left hand. `Bara no Kokuin…' “I see…” he derided, “… So you're next are you?”
; “Do you accept or not?” Utena barked. Saionji flipped his twining green ponytail.
; “Naturally. I'll see you in a little bit… in the Dueling Forest at the top of the arena.” He grinned catching the amber tint Utena's blue eyes took. Utena left the dojo unsure of what felt like a blood oath she took.
&n bsp; `Dueling Forest? Arena?' So distracted was she that she didn't hear the swift padding footsteps approaching her. “Tenjou-sempai!” Utena paused and saw Himemiya Anthy slide to a halt before her.
  ; “Himemiya.”
  ; “Tenjou-sempai, you mustn't go. Saionji-sama will kill you!”
Utena smiled affably and mounted the flat of her blade atop her right shoulder. “I never thanked you for that medicine you gave me. It worked some alien wonders, I'll tell you that much.” She started for the fire exit at the end of the hall. “Shinpai nai, Himemiya. Something tells me that despite what happens, it'll all be worth it.

; The only forest she knew of was the one behind the tower she had infiltrated previously, this time nothing stood in her way metaphysical or otherwise. A glittering granite path unwound itself from the bleakness and there stood the remnants of a golden age: broken swords, demolished Grecian columns, pitched standing stones, limbless and decapitated deities. Climbing a short, wide staircase embedded into a hill Utena saw a gateway come into view formed from mist and shadow. A gigantic white tea rose crowned the double doors and she grasped the one of their long handles with her left hand. `Wait, I haven't a key!' Then for a moment the world stopped its spinning and something cold splashed her ring. `What… was… that?!' Founts of the purest spring water flooded the parched reflecting pools flanking the path.

Iron grille gates pulled apart and Utena was ushered in seeing a twisting staircase whirl to the heavens, so high her eyes hurt daring to admire it. Utena swallowed thickly thinking of the leg cramps she'd get but her fears were unfounded, coring the center of the stairs was a gilded cage shaft for a lift gondola and waiting by the open doors was Anthy. They ascended and Anthy was suddenly naked splaying her hands just touching Utena's body, to which the other girl felt her flesh bared to the world. Anthy's fingers touched Utena's lips now glossed in pink, and fanned them over her breasts appearing were red and gold epaulets dangling from them white tassels, a gold braid and emerald brooch, unclasping her hands between her hips materialized a white frill beneath the black jacket's tails, and caressing each toned arm bloomed a white cuff trimmed in red. It was an out of body experience for Utena, as though she were a rose bush sprouting from air. In a blizzard of white petals the lift came to a stop and there was not only Saionji, but Anthy dressed in her red and white Rose Bride gown and the other members of the Seitokai hanging out on the sidelines a distance from where the battle stood to transpire.
“Impressive,” Saionji conceded. It was the appropriate uniform for such a ceremony.
“Let's get this over with!” Utena plied her sword. Tempted to curse him Utena saw the deepening outline of the castle in her dream inverted aloft. “What is up with that?” She blurted lowering her sword.
Saionji scoffed. “You amaze me, Tenjou. You wear a rose seal yet you have no idea what it's for. Consider the castle a mirage of sorts…”
  ; `A mirage?'
; “I wonder if your kind are truly qualified for this game. No matter, since you aren't familiar with the rules Anthy will fill you in. My bride, prepare us!” He commanded. Anthy pinned a white rose in Utena's lapel and a green one in Saionji's.
; “The one whose rose is knocked from their breast first is the winner.” Anthy's green eyes implored Utena to cut and run something that didn't go overlooked by Touga.
; “Himemiya,” Utena began her focus on snidely smiling Saionji, “what do you have to do with this?”
; “Saionji-sama is the current victor of the duels- my master. He has the right to do whatever he wishes with me.” Anthy informed her.
; “You mean he isn't your lover?”
; “By no means,” Anthy said impassively. “Atashi wa Bara no Hanayome desu. I am not permitted to have any one lover.” Christ! Sexual servitude! There was little doubt why Anthy didn't object to being shared between Touga and Saionji.
; “So all I have to do is win, right?” Utena slid her glance to Anthy.
  ; “Correct.”
; “Let us begin Anthy,” Saionji said. The Rose Bride slid into a trance joining her hands over her breasts.
; “Oh rose of the noble castle…” she summoned, “The power of Dios that sleeps within me…” A glorious orb of light matching that of the castle emanated from her breast. “…Answer to your master and show yourself now…” She tilted backward in Saionji's arms entranced by the magnificence as she, budding from her heart the hilt of a sword.
; “THE POWER TO REVOLUTIONIZE THE WORLD!” He heralded unsheathing the weapon suspending it aloft.

; Steel clashed against steel. Saionji utilized his kendo techniques with a European sword, Utena attempted at a sweep but the power fueling his strikes nearly sent her reeling to the floor. She mounted her hand on her left hip and lunged again warding Saionji's blade successfully cutting him. “Hmm. You're pretty good… FOR A GIRL!”
; “HAAH!” Utena extended her blade Saionji collided with her telegraphing the attack, red-gold sparks flew into her eyes as they stalemated, blades intersecting.
; “Think you're the prince here to rescue the poor princess- YOU PRESUME TOO MUCH!” Deflecting her they pulled back simultaneously Utena charged blurred by her wounded pride, her assails jagged Saionji grinned watching her drop into the danger zone instead of intercepting his blows with smaller circles in her parry so determined to slice him she didn't see how wide open she was. He swerved carving her blade several inches above the hilt. “Such a fine move! What a stupid woman! Take on the Sword of Dios with an ordinary blade…”
`Dios?' “Are you serious?!” He saluted her malignantly raising the sword to his psychotically handsome face. Utena began to rethink her position considering the fact he was just as determined to stain her rose with blood as she was trying to mend her honor. Tempted, as she was to forfeit the duel the face of the prince prevented her from doing anything irrational. He was the one who banished her tears that fateful night and bestowed her his ring. Saionji could veritably gore her, but the sacrifice of good and noble beings was an old story. Utena mouthed her father's name, inhaled cleansing herself and adopted a kendo attack stance. Saionji's teeth set on edge.
; “Nobility recognizes no gender,” Utena told him. “And a Juu-Dan's daughter never backs down!” Her counterfoil's jagged tip glistened catching the refracting light from the spinning castle. Saionji's orchid glare was protuberant at the mention of her father's kendo rank. He held his breath, fingers tight on the sword's gold pommel Saionji's crystal of self-control began to fracture around him. His intimidating smile was feeble but Utena was drawn to him and pitied the Vice President only seeing a little ponytailed boy fallen by the wayside.
; “That little stick… you're crazy Tenjou.” She drove him head on; her sure strides levitated her off the stones. Concurrently they attempted the fleche, silver bullets on a collision course for oblivion. “KIYAHH!!”
; “Your rose… IS MINE!!” Everything was taken from him. Childhood, innocence, his best friend… by the same beautiful bandit riding a white stallion… not this time. Not so willingly would Saionji Kyouichi relinquish the sacred sword and its sheath. Not when he was this close to reaching the prize. Not when he was so near to earning his wings to fly free with the glory upon high. Utena's signet flared white forcing her combatant and audience to raise shielding arms from the luminance.
  ; `This feeling…' The tender embrace of white roses…
; `There will come a time when we will meet again if you do not lose your noble heart…' And it was the prince's eyes she was looking through. Saionji's retaliating technique divided into fractured diamond shards dissecting each stance and dozens of openings strew before her. Storming one another over the quaking arena Utena shut her eyes at the last possible second and split Saionji's cyan bloom, Dios' sword hurtled through the air with the airborne petals swallowed up by the blinding white shaft of light firing from the eddying castle.
; “The sword!” Before Saionji could knock Utena down in hopes of retrieval she beat him to it swinging her right leg into a spin kick, her foot crushing his jaw and Saionji reeled.

; Gravitated towards her indomitable aura, the blade fell into Utena's grasp the light engulfing her, shifting and shrinking into her form imploding like a dying star. Armored in a black and white uniform Utena assumed an aggressive stance with Dios' sword, a new champion crowned. The Rose Bride's eyes faintly smiled applauding the fates on their handiwork.
