3) Endings

Utena layed on her back as she slept in her bed. Soft mumurs could be heard from her mouth as she slowly lifted her right hand as if to grab something. Yet before she can grasp whatever she is reaching for, she gasped and her eyes flew open. She then sat up and looked rapidly around the dark room as her breath came out in short pants. When she realized that she was in the Eternal Castle, she let out a sigh of releif and began to relax.

It had been more than a week since she was told that Anthy was a Soul Doll. And in that time, her daysm were spent with Akio and Anthy while her nights were haunted by the playground dream. Every night, she would get a little closer to the girl on the swing and every night, a tall man in a white suit would step in her way and shock her awake with his cold narrow eyes full of malice. That night, she had gotten close enough to almost touch the girl, but she was immeditally yanked back by the man.

Now, here she sat her her bed with her knees tucked up to her chest and her arms wrapped around her knees. as she nibbled on her lower lip. As much as she didn't want to admit it, she was afraid to go back to sleep. With a heavy sigh, Utena threw back the covers and swung her legs to the right side of the bed where she got up and made her way to the door. Once there, she opened the door and stepped out into the hallway where the candleabras on the walls came to life with flames. Utena was surprised by this the first night she spent there, but she was used to it by now and as she walked down the hall more candles lit themselves while the ones she already passed put themselves out.

Though it seemed like magic, to Utena it seemed more like something out a dream. The whole place seemed like a dream to her. Though there was only three people in it, the building was still well kept. As if there was an invisible army of servants tending to the castle while Utena and the two siblings lived in the castle...

'That is, if you call exsisting in a dreaming living,' Utena thought to herself with a light snort. She then looked up for a moment only to be surprised to find herself in a stairway heading upstairs rather than downstairs to the kitchen for a warm glass of milk and a spoonful of peanut butter. Yet she contd tod to climb untill she found herself outside and on the roof of an open top tower. She looked up and gasped lightly to see the night sky filled with stars.

"Beautiful, isn't it?" asked a male voice. Utena's breath caught in her throat and she turned to her left to see Akio, sitting in a foldup camper's chair with his legs crossed and his right arm slung over the back as he looked at her. Thankfully, they were about 15 feet away from each other and he couldn't see the look of shock and mild fear on her face.

"Y...yes, it is," Utena said when she was able to regain her breath.
"Why don't you come over here and join me," Akio said and gestured his left hand to an empty director's chair to his left.

'If I smile and don't believe, soon I know I'll wake from this dream,' Utena thought and painted a smile on her face as she approached Akio and sat next to him. He returned the smile and looked back up at the sea of stars.

"Do I bother you Utena?" Akio asked as she still looked up at the stars.
"No," she replied as she kept him in the corner of her eye as she titled her head down.
"Then why aren't you looking at the stars?" he asked. She did as he requested and the first thing she saw was the milky way.

"Man kind has been facinated by stars for many years now. They've leanred how to travel by them, fortell their futures by them and they even concocted ledgens that the stars are actually the souls of the dead," Akio said. Utena looked at Akio when he said the last part about the souls and stared at him in wonder. After a moment of silence, Akio looked to his left to see her staring at him.

"Yes?" he asked.
"I was just wondering...if what you told was true," she said.
"About the stars? Or my sister being a doll?" he asked and pulled a large manilla envelope from his cape, "Or my sister's ability to heal you." With that, Akio tossed the envelope in her lap.

"What is this?" Utena asked as she picked up the unmarked envelope.
"Photos...of your accident," Akio said and looked back up at the stars. Utena lifted an eyebrow at this and opened the envelope to reveal 8 by 10 glossies. The very first one was of her precious pink car smashed into the side of an oak tree. Utena's eyes widen a bit as she flipped through the rest of the pictures which showed even more views of the crumpled car as it got closer and closer to the driver seat. As she did so, Akio watched her out of the corner of his eye with a thin grin on his lips.

Finally, Utena reached the last picture.

She was shocked by what she saw and dropped the rest of the pictures in her lap and looked at the final on win wide shock. What Utena saw was the only photograph of the cocpit and the damage inflicted upon it...

In the next moment, Utena found herself back inside. She wandered the halls, dazed and confussed as she couldn't believe what she saw in the photo. It was unreal. To unreal and she began to wonder if she really was dreaming, perhaps in acomma somewheres. She didn't have long to think about this for she soon found herself outside of Anthy's room. She stood there for a moment and stared at the red double doors to find that they were cracked open and the room was fully lit inside.

Utena didn't know what compelled her to do so, but she reached out her right hand and pushed back the right door enough to look inside. When she did, she gasped to see Anthy with a dagger in her hands which her held up in the air and aimed towards her own chest.

"Anthy! No!" Utena exlcaimed as she bursted into the room and Anthy whirled to her right in surprise.
"Utena?!" she exclaimed as the pink haired woman approached and snatched the knife away from her.
"Anthy, what's wrong? What were you thinking?" Utena asked. Anthy stared at her for a moment before tears began to bead the corners of her eyes.

"I wanted it to end. I wanted it all to end," Anthy said, her voice very shakey.
"Your life," Utena said, more of a statment than a question.
Anthy nodded in the affirmative, "and the lies." Utena looked on confussed.
"Utena, you're not the first to visit us. There were others, most of them women," Anthy said, the last part with a certine tone that Utena couldn't help but notice...a tone of jealousy.

"What happened to them?" Utena asked warily.
Anthy let out a heavy sigh, "Most left of their own accord, they were the ones who weren't meant to stay here...but some didn't leave."

"Where are they? Why haven't I seen them?" Utena asked.
"Dead," Anthy said monotonly as she dipped her head just enough for her glasses to glare and conceal her eyes. At that same moment, Utena's breath hitched in her throw as was was surprised by the answer.

"Dead?" she asked.
"Yes. They were all women who made moves on my brother and made it in his bed...but they never made it out," Anthy said and two rivers of tears flowed down her face. Once more, Utena was surprised. This time by Anthy's tears.

"They are the lucky ones, they get all of my brother's attention and get to become apart of his lovelly garden of roses while..." Anthy stopped for another moment, shuddering as she wrapped her arms around herself, "he doesn't love me. I'm nothing to him."

"Anthy, that isn't true," Utena said.
"How would you know?" Anthy asked syndly.
"Because, he does love you," Utena said and Anthy looked up at her with a questioning look on her face.
"He loves you as a brother would love a sister and asked me to help you," Utena said.
"Help me?" Anthy asked, confussed.
"Yes, he told me you're a Soul Doll and to help you..." Utena started.
"No!" Anthy shrieked and stepped away with a furious look on her face.
"Anthy?!" Utena gasped.
"Don't try to fix me, I'm not broken!" Anthy exclaimed and Utena was confussed.
"I'm not the Soul Doll, he is!" Anthy exclaimed and tore the gauzy sleves off her red dress to reveal human elbows.

"I don't understand," Utena said after she looked at the eblows in surprise and then looked back into Anthy's eyes.

"Shortly after I turned 10, my mother found that she couldn't bear any more children. So, they went to the best DollSmith and gave her their DNA to create a Soul Doll for them. They wanted an son to carry on the family name and to watch over me," Anthy said.

"That's good, isn't it?" Utena asked.
"No, Soul Dolls are meant to love and be loved so they can become human. What my parents wanted was an abomination. You see, the night that the doll was to awaken my parents were away on business. So, I was left alone with the woman and the doll.

"It was a dark and stormy night...something we should have seen as a bad omen. For when the doll awoken, he looked at me, I looked at him...and he attacked me," Anthy said, rather coldly. Utena's eyes grew a size wider in shock when she heard this. Anthy lifted her hands to her chest, grasped the frabric of her chest and ripped open her dress. Utena's breath caught in her throat when she saw an rice grain shapped hole in her chest.

"He attacked me with a weapon that has been passed down in my family for generations, the Sword of Dios. The woman tried to stop it, but she didn't move fast enough. The blade sliced through the air and through my chest...hmph...funny, I can still remember the feeling of the cold metal sliding through me to this day," Anthy said as she touched the empty wound with her righ hand and a finger dipped into the dark void.

"Anthy," Utena gasped.

"Yet I wasn't to die that day. My powers awoken the moment the blade knicked my heart. I awoken as the Rose Bride...and it led to my parents' death. For though my powers saved me from death, they took my place when their plane crashed into the side of Mount Fuji. The Soul Doll...Akio...took control of the family the next day. Those who challenged him lost very quickly and vanished soon afterwards.

"Once the funeral was over with and all familay affairs were settled, Akio brought me here to the Eternal Castle...another family relic, believe it or not. We've been here ever since," Anthy said.

"But, is he's the doll and you're human...why would he...?" Utena asked.
"He's broken," Anthy said.
"Broken?"
"Yes, the DollSmith had to change the design of the doll to make him accept me as his siter rather then his lover...so she had to make his heart imcomplete to do just this. It was this very flaw that made him attack me that night, his lack of heart confussed him and I confussed him even more. So he lashed out against me but my powers centered his thoughts and cleared his mind...but he truely believes that he's a real human..."

"And that you're the doll," Utena said monotonely.
Anthy nodded as the tears returned to her eyes, "I am the lie, living for him so he can hide." With that, Anthy lets the tears flow freely and covers her face with her hands. Utena frowns at this sight and can feel her heart strings being pulled tightly. In a heartbeat, she approached Anthy and softly embraces her. Anthy is surprised by this and lets out a small gasp.

"Don't cry," Utena whispers in her right ear before she moves back just enough for Anthy to move her hands away from her face. Utena then moves her glasses and kisses away the Rose Bride's tears before she places one final kiss on her lush cocoa lips that took her breath away.

Countless moments passed before the kiss finallded.ded. When it did, Utena backed off enough so as the two could gaze into each other's eyes. Anthy looked up Utena with mild confussion, surprise and lust while Utena looked back with a hazed glossy eye look.

"Anthy, I love you and only you. Would you do me the honor of spending the night with me?" Utena asked.
