Chapter Ten: To Death do us Part
Author's Note: Well here it is, the last chapter. This fic definitely took longer than I anticipated (although this year was more than I anticipated as well). I want to thank everyone who was patient with me and stuck through until the end. Huzzah to you!
Days blended together in a slow succession and still Ren did not come back. Yuki thought about her sister often and couldn't shake the feeling of guilt and regret. For awhile it made her angry; after all Ren was the one who should be feeling guilty after sleeping with Kaname. Then it just made her sad. Yuki wanted her sister back.
It was a cool evening when Yuki heard shouting across the campus. Perplexed she followed the noise to its source. She passed the night class on their way from their dormitory and a quick scan told her someone was missing. Her heart skipped a beat. The students of the night class seemed on edge and were purposefully ignoring the ever-increasing fight that was going on. Yuki went around the corner of the building and found both the missing student and the cause of the noise.
“You son-of-a-bitch this is your fault,” a man yelled at Kaname, his fists balled in rage. Kaname saw Yuki standing there. The man turned around and looked at her: it was Kaemon. Yuki was shocked at the change she saw on his face. He was very pale, except the two spots of red on his cheeks and his entire face was haggard looking.
“What is going on here?” Yuki demanded. Her heart was fluttering because she knew if Kaemon was here it had to do something with Ren.
“Yuki,” Kaemon said clearly surprised. He looked at Kaname and then looked back at her.
“Well?” Yuki persisted, putting her hands on her hips and staring at both men. “What is going on here?”
“Nothing anymore,” Kaname responded smoothly. Yuki glared at him. A part of her blamed him for all this.
“I was just telling this bastard what he caused,” Kaemon finally responded.
“What did he cause,” Yuki said suddenly starting to worry. Kaemon saw her reaction and all his anger dissipated. Suddenly he looked sad.
“He nearly killed your sister,” Anger sprung up in his eyes again.
“What!?” Yuki cried out. “Ren nearly died? How!?” Kaemon's lips compressed together as he thought of the best way to tell her.
“After…after your sister left you, she was consumed with guilt. For penitence she asked another clan to perform the atonement ceremony,” Yuki was confused. “The atonement ceremony causes a witch to go into another state of conscious where she faces all the bad things she has done ever. All the while she starts to loose her magic and her sanity. Most witches don't survive and those that do usually don't come out of it sane.” He paused and his face filled with pain. “If I had known, I would have stopped her. But she disappeared so completely it took me two months to find her and by the time I did it was too late. She had finished undergoing the ceremony. She-She's alive but just barely and it seems that she came through it with her sanity intact but it's too soon to really tell”
Yuki was frozen as emotions swirled through her body. She felt the last bits of anger she felt towards Ren slip away. Her sister had nearly died…not because of Kaname but because of Yuki herself. The blood rushed away from her face and she felt herself grow lightheaded. She reached out a hand towards both of them and then she collapsed.

It was still dark out when Yuki awoke. For a moment she was disoriented and confused by where she was. In one sick snap all the memories came rushing back. She heard someone moving around the room.
“You're awake,” he said. Yuki stared at him.
“So I didn't dream it all,” she said feeling her throat tighten. The blue eyes regarded her seriously
“No you didn't,” Yuki struggled to sit up and Kaemon walked over to help her. Before he could move away, Yuki grabbed his arm and stared at him until he met her eyes.
“Kaname is not to blame, Kaemon, I am,” Kaemon shook his head and started to say something but Yuki tightened her grip on his arm “Yes I am. I was the one who yelled at her. I made her do this,” Suddenly Yuki started to sob. Kaemon hugged her lightly, gently patting her back as she wet his shirt with her tears. He made soothing sounds and eventually Yuki cried herself out.
The sky had lightened significantly while Yuki had been crying, dawn mere minutes away. Kaemon reached into his pocket and pulled out a white envelope.
“Ren wrote you a letter before she underwent the ceremony,” he handed it to Yuki and then stood up. “I'll be leaving now, I have to go back to her,” the pain in his eyes was heart wrenching. Yuki looked down at the blanket before asking,
“Can you forgive her,”. There was a pause and Yuki looked up.
“I love her too much to ever walk away,” he said and then turned and left. As he reached the door he turned around and looked at her “Goodbye Yuki, I'll keep you up to date on her progress,” Yuki watched him leave and then turned to her letter, afraid of what it would contain. She turned over the envelope and with tremulous fingers opened the letter. She unfolded the crisp paper and looked at the familiar scrawl.
Yuki read the letter and then read it again. Her sister was still alive somewhere out there and someday she would come back. Tears slide down Yuki's face, dropping onto the paper. She carefully folded the letter back up and stowed it away in a pocket. The sun had just begun to peak over the horizon and looking at it Yuki felt hope for the first time in a long time. Right now there was still so much that was difficult, so many things to figure out but Yuki was willing to give it her best, knowing that Ren would be doing the same. And then she would have her sister back and they could begin to rebuild everything they had lost.
The End.
