The Beginning of the End

The stillness of the night was becoming overwhelming. Yuki looked around nervously, silently wondering where Zero could have gone so late at night. She slipped from her room and made her way to Zero's room. She peeked inside and noticed his bed was still made. She stood confused, `Where did he go?' She looked around and quietly slipped past the headmaster's room and ran out the door.

Yuki sped quickly through the grounds, as she was about to reach the Night classes' dorms, she tripped on a protruding tree root and tripped. She closed her eyes tightly and waited for the fall that never came. Suddenly she was being cradled against a broad, warm chest. Yuki gasped in surprise then relaxed as a calm spread throughout her body. She wrapped her arms around her hero's neck. She felt her hero begin to move.
“Yuki… Are you alright?”
It was Kaname. Yuki's eyes snapped open. A blush spread like wildfire across her face. She nodded, trying to hide her face in Kaname's shirt. He chuckled lightly.
“Now, tell me my sweet… What's with the hurry?”
Kaname had stopped. He gently set Yuki down on a chair in his `office'.
“I-It's Zero… He's been gone for a long time… And I can't find him. I'm a little worried…”
Kaname nodded.
“Allow me to help you.”
Yuki shook her head.
“I-I don't want to bother you… I'll be fine. Thank you for the help.”
She smiled and stood, but before she could manage to escape out the door, Kaname managed to pull her into a tight hug.
“Just be careful… You never know what's running around out here…”
Yuki's blush had returned. She nodded and Kaname released her. She quickly fled the room and exited the building. Kaname silently watched her flight from his window. He turned and sat down with a sigh. This was going to be a long, long night.

It hadn't been long before Yuki stumbled across Zero. He was sprawled across the ground in the forest, unconscious. Yuki gasped and kneeled down next to him.
“Zero?? Zero! Can you hear me?? Zero, wake up please!!”
Yuki gently lifted his head and set it carefully in her lap. She gently traced his face, moving his hair from his eyes. She incoherently whispered his name. Slowly his eyes opened. A moment later he spoke.
“Yuki? Wh-what are you doing here? Where are we?”
Yuki explained everything quickly. Zero cautiously stood then helped Yuki to her feet. Yuki looked at him carefully.
“Zero… You're hungry… Aren't you?”
His eyes widened, but he nodded. Yuki forced a small smile and moved her hair out of the way and leaned her head to the side, exposing her neck.
“It's alright… Drink…”
Zero shoved her lightly against a tree and bit down, breaking the skin, and began to feed. Yuki gasped and grabbed Zero's shirt tightly. Her eyes shut tightly against the momentary pain. Then it stopped. Yuki placed a hand on the small wound to hold the bleeding. Zero turned away and pulled a wrap from his pocket. He handed it to Yuki while looking down at the ground. She took it gingerly, and wrapped it carefully around her neck. As she finished she looked up to see that Zero was gone. He had run off, probably disgusted with himself yet again.

Yuki looked around. She wasn't really sure where she was. And it was getting later in the night. There was no moon tonight. It was scheduled to be a new moon. So if she didn't get home quickly, she'd be lost until morning… And that wouldn't be good. She began to move back toward the way she believed she'd come, but as soon as she'd taken two steps she collapsed. The world was spinning. Zero took a lot of blood... She was still woozy from the blood loss. She sat there, head in hands, waiting for the after effects to wear off. Finally she was seeing clearly enough to test being able to stand again. This time she stayed stable, so she began to move. After a few minutes of walking, she realized maybe she'd gone the wrong way… Yuki began to shiver. It was already quite dark and it was getting chilly out. She looked around, trying to identify the way she'd come from, but every way looked the same. Suddenly a noise came from her right. She turned quickly, backing up. Then a squirrel popped out of the bushes and rooted around on the ground, looking for food. Yuki sighed in relief and decided it'd be better for her to keep moving. So she choose a direction that looked like the way she'd come from and began to walk.

As the night got darker and colder, Yuki began to wonder if she'd chosen the right direction. She was beginning to get worried.
“I wonder if anyone's noticed I'm missing… I wonder if anyone cares…”
Yuki's small, frightened voice broke the silence that had encased the woods. She finally gave up on trying to find her way out and decided to find a tree to climb that she could sleep in. She spotted a large oak tree with branches large enough for her to sleep on. She climbed as high as she could before tiring and huddled her knees up to her chest, wrapping her arms around them and resting her head on her arms. It was like that, leaning back on the tree, that she fell asleep, safe from most ground predators.
