Chapter 1: Alone

"…Van," Hitomi cried softly into her fluffy pillow. She had not been sleeping well since she left Gaia.

Hitomi sat up and looked at the clock. "4:30!" I can't believe that I'm up again this early. She moaned and rolled off the bed. She trudged to the bathroom and looked in the mirror. `My hair has grown and it's darker. Would he even still know me, it's been 2 years?' Looking back at the mirror, she washed the tears from her face.

"I guess I'll go for a jog…"

She laced up her tennis shoes and put on her jogging shorts and shirt. After putting her hair into a ponytail, she left her house and went to the school. Even though she had graduated, she still used the track…it reminded her of Van.

She sprinted constantly for about an hour. Breathing heavily, she leaned over and wiped the sweat from her forehead. She peered into the sky and wished for a light to come out and take her away. The grass was glistening as the sun streaked through the trees.

" Oh God, I miss you Van," she screamed as she hit the track, " Why can't I be where you are, I don't have anything left. Yukari and Amano are together, and my mom is dead. I need you! I don't want to live without you…please hear me…"

For a while she lay there waiting for the sun to completely rise and remind her that this was reality. Dreams don't come true and Gaia never existed. Even though the doctors told her she was dreaming it all. Yukari had always stuck up for her and kept her hope alive that maybe Van did exist somewhere.

"It's alright Hitomi," Yukari would say, "I saw you fly up into the light. I believe you met Van, Allen, and Millerna. I believe in you."

"I miss you Yukari," Hitomi whispered, "I know you are happy now with Amano, and for all I know Van is even married."

Minutes passed in silence, then she took a deep breath and stood up. She wiped the tears from her eyes and decided.

"It's time.." she said blankly.

She walked back to her house slowly and stopped by the bridge near her house. She watched the birds fly across the sky and the clouds part with the dawn. The wind blew the bangs from her forehead and dried the tears from her face. One by one she put her legs over the bar and held on tight. It was slippery with dew as she leaned out over the water. The ocean was far below and the waves lapped on the columns. She glanced back up to look at the one star left in the sky and then let go.

"Van…" she said silently and closed her eyes.
