The Life I Deserve
Chapter 2 Meanwhile…
Van looked up at the ceiling of his room. There was a slight glow coming from the window, it was almost dawn, again. He had tossed and turned again all night. He couldn't seem to sleep without dreaming of her, the girl from the mystic moon. Her eyes, the smell of her hair, they haunted him all day and night. He knew that he would never see her again; she had left her pendant with him. He didn't know how it worked, but he always wore it, so he could feel close to her.
The two years that had passed had been full of hard work. He had been rebuilding Fanelia, trying to record past events, and taking care of his people constantly. These moments just before dawn and late at night were his quietest. These were the times he wished for Hitomi. He just wanted to see her, know that she was all right. He missed her…but he had to think of his country, not his happiness.
Happiness…He had decided that it didn't matter. His council had already decided that he would need to get married soon.
"We need a queen," they would say, "your highness needs to have a companion to keep him company and help him rule."
He always laughed and avoided answering, because inside his heart he always felt a dull ache. No other woman would make him happy. The only one he wanted, was the one he couldn't have…
He pulled back the silk sheets and put his feet lightly onto the floor. He combed his hair through with his hands and then walked to the mirror. He pulled a red shirt out of the drawer and slid it on over his head. He glanced only a moment into the mirror, noticing only that he looked almost exactly the same as he did two years ago, except that he had a slightly larger build. He changed into his new breeches and put on his boots. The last thing he did was pull the red pendant out from under his shirt and kiss it lightly.
Suddenly he felt his heart pounding fast, and the bottom drop out of his stomach.
"What's happening," he whispered, "Why am I sweating?"
At that moment he felt a breeze and heard the sound of waves far below. He watched as his vision tilted and the sky turned only into water. He couldn't breathe.
"Hitomi," he gasped as he held tightly to the pendant.
He didn't know where the light came from but it appeared in his room. It swallowed him. The pendant began to glow as well and he noticed that he was lifting off the floor.
"I am going to the Mystic Moon," he choked, " I am going to see Hitomi. Is she alright?"
Then he was gone. The servants rushed in when they heard the commotion but they fought naught. All they saw was feathers…and water droplets on the floor.
When Van was able to open his eyes again, he was falling from the sky. He saw a city below him. A city like he had never seen. He breathed in heavily and pushed his wings out from his back. The beautiful white feathers trailed behind him as he glided down. As he got closer, he realized he was over water. `Water', he thought, `I couldn't breathe in the vision…'
With that he picked up speed and flew past the bridge retracted his wings and dove into the water. Panic hit him as he swam lower and lower. He couldn't see anything but darkness, but then something caught his eye.
`Red, was that red,' he thought as he swam. He saw the glimmer of red again and swam toward it. He reached out and found it to be fabric. Then he saw her. He grabbed her and rushed to the surface.
`Oh God, Hitomi,' he thought, `please be alright.'
And then he hit the surface and gasped for air.
