It's been three years since she left Van at Gaea. There were no links of communication between them, making Hitomi think that maybe, just maybe, Van had forgotten about her in such short span of time.
Short span of time. Just how short is short? Hitomi shook her head. Stop thinking like that!
Amano and Yukari had moved to England, and got married last year. She failed to go to the wedding because of her illness. Yukari understood and was willing to postpone the wedding just for her.
“Are you sure Hitomi? Amano won't mind if we re-schedule our wedding for a couple more weeks,” said Yukari.
“I'm fine, Yukari. Amano had waited for so long, don't test his patience. I am so sorry I can not make it to your special day,” replied Hitomi.
She made it home alright, and was surprised at the sight she was welcomed with. Blood was everywhere. Cabinets and cushions were thrown around. Chaos was written all over the house.
Burglary?
“Mom! Dad! Tai! Where are you?” yelled Hitomi.
Hitomi rushed towards the kitchen, bedroom and even at the garden to find the house completely deserted. Where are they? She couldn't breathe. She can't take it. Where is her family?
Where?
She entered the living room and already wished she hadn't. Three mutilated bodies sprawled on the floor. There was her mother; eyes bulged as though she was choked to death. A thin line of blood appeared on her neck which was surrounded by a thin wire. Hitomi traced her mother's hand and it landed on her father's. Her father; Symbol of authority and courage. This isn't her father. The body was covered with brandings of hot metal. Every inch of the body was burned by some unknown metal. She could almost see the internal organs which were starting to slide away from its possessor. Lastly she found her little brother. He was as though sleeping only the sight of his lacerated chest was disturbing. He hugged his brother tightly, aware of his blood slowly tainting her clothes.
Who did these?!
She cried until she cannot cry anymore. All the loneliness and anguish she felt inside were released. Fear forgotten, she started to prepare her family's funeral in their small backyard. It took her all night to finish. When she did, she just slumped there and stared blankly. She was startled by a low beeping sound. She groped for the pager and read the alarm note that was written on it.
Check your closet!
From Tai, Mom and Dad.
Hitomi rushed towards her room to find the said item. A single parcel was located beside her closet. With trembling hands, she held it at her bosom and slowly opened it. Tears strolled down her cheeks as she saw a single white feather laid in a velvet cushion. A note fell and Hitomi stooped down to retrieve it.
Happy Birthday Hitomi!
Mom and Dad planned a great birthday party tonight at exactly midnight. Don't say I told you about it, okay? It's supposed to be a secret. Anyway, I am sorry I couldn't find you any better present than this. Mom told me that you lost this several days ago, so I tried to find it. Take care of it okay? I know it means so much to you.
Tai
“Thank you Tai…”
Beside the parcel Tai left for her was a pendant that is shaped really badly. A red aura was surrounding it for a brief moment and when Hitomi touched it, it was warm. She wore it around her neck, and the pendant began to shape itself like a small glaive. A miniature size of the original, she thought. It was still crooked in some places but the shape of a glaive could be distinguished. Hitomi strolled towards her window and glanced up the moon.
“Happy Birthday Hitomi,” said Hitomi to herself in almost a bare whisper.
Hitomi left her house. It held too many memories there. All she ever wanted was a place where she can be herself and alone. Yukari and Amano still haven't known about the incident. Although they were worried at her sudden change of attitude. She became agitated and always hot tempered. Gone was the calm soothing face of Hitomi Kanzaki. The friendly smile was replaced by a blank face and often a death glare. Yukari once tried to talk Hitomi about it and it ended wit her cheek pulsing red. Hitomi had slapped Yukari.
“Hitomi we are concerned about your situation! Please why won't you tell us?” asked Yukari.
“Why? What good will it do?”
“Please Hitomi. Where is your family? Do they know that you're living here now?”
Hitomi glared at Yukari. “As if you care about that. Go run to your too-perfect-for-anyone husband”.
“Hitomi…”
“GO! Just go! It's bad enough that you disturb me!”
Yukari made to walk beside Hitomi but she halted. Hitomi was holding a ragged piece of glass. She aimed it at Yukari, her eyes filled with unspoken malice.
“Never show your face to me again. Understand?” bellowed Hitomi to her once called best friend.
“Hitomi… please… stop this… we can help y-“
Hitomi lunged at Yukari armed with the sharp glass. It hit her left arm slightly, but enough to stain her clothes with her own blood. Hitomi was getting another glass to throw at Yukari.
“Don't make me kill you because I can. Trust me, I can kill you. Right here, right now,” said Hitomi in a threatening voice. She advanced to the frightened Yukari.
Yukari backed away, cradling her arm. What happened to her dear friend Hitomi? What have she suffered that made her this way? Yukari felt the hard wall behind her. She was trapped.
“No one will hear your screams. Did you know that Yukari? No one. Not even your good-for-nothing Amano.”
“How dare you call Amano that way! Hitomi, snap out of it! You need help! Please.”
“I don't need help. Help wasn't there when I needed it most. What made you think I need it now?”
The door barged open to show a gasping Amano. When he saw his wife bloodied, sense left his body. He just want the one who did this to her to pay. He scanned the room for the one responsible and his eyes fell upon Hitomi. He lost no time and immediately disarmed Hitomi with the glass shards. She fought, struggled anything to retrieve the weapons. Amano lost his patience and once he was successful in separating Hitomi and the shards, he banged her across the wall. Hitomi's body slumped on the floor, not moving. Yukari dashed towards her side.
“Are you alright, Yukari?”
“Yes. Amano….Hitomi…she's….”
“She's just unconscious. However, I must have caused her head to bleed. Better call a doctor for
your wounds as well.”
“I'm fine Amano. But Hitomi. I wonder what happened to her.”
“I don't know. God knows”
Yukari and Amano had just finished talking to the doctor. Hitomi was sleeping on her bedroom. Yukari's wounds had been cleaned and bandaged.
“It would be best if you let her be alone for the time being. Especially now that her condition is crucial,” said the doctor to the two.
“Crucial?”
“This may be a shock for you, but she suffers from something far worse than longing. She must have been punishing herself for something she accounted her fault. That's what's affecting her health.”
“Maybe we should tell Van about this...”
Yukari nodded. They led the doctor to the door. Before he left, he stayed a little longer to give them a prescription. Amano took it from him.
“Thank you so much Doctor.”
“Anytime. Call me if such case again arises.”
“We will. I apologize for the disturbance,” said Amano.
“Before I forget, please take good care of her. Also will you notify her husband about it?” said the doctor.
“Husband?” said Yukari and Amano in unison.
“She's pregnant. Almost three months now.”
Yukari and Amano stared at each other as the doctor turned to leave.
“How can she be pregnant?” wondered Yukari.
“It can't possibly be Van…It's been three years since ….,” speculated Amano.
“Amano, I remember Hitomi saying that `help wasn't there when she needed it'. Could it be that she was --?” asked Yukari but Amano didn't let her finish her question.
“No. It can't be. Not her. Not our Hitomi,” said Amano firmly, as though trying to convince the two of them that that wasn't the situation. But both knew that Amano was just bluffing.
Amano pushed himself to search for anything that may answer the mystery behind Hitomi's behavior. Yukari was beside her all the time, checking her vital signs.
“AMANO!”
Amano hurried to Yukari in time to see Hitomi enveloped by the same red light as she was three years ago.
“He called her,” said Amano.
“Why now of all the years they were separated? Now that Hitomi's..,” sobbed Yukari. Amano put a comforting hand on Yukari's shoulder.
“Maybe this will help Hitomi. Let us hope for the best,” said Amano before Hitomi and the light vanished. A second transpires, and the bed was empty.
