Farfarello smiled a little and carefully watched the sky's fading colors.
“Such interesting things present themselves in the gloaming,” he said to himself. He turned slightly and whipped a dagger into the air; it struck a tree trunk a hairs breadth away from someone's head. “Did you think I'd not sense you there, youngling?”
“By appearance, it would seem I am older than you are, sir,” a voice said.
“Only by appearance. Since I'm aware of you, it only seems polite to make yourself visible.”
A woman with dark hair gradually became visible, looking at Farf warily. “How did you sense me when none of the others can?”
Farf smiled. “You should be more careful of the weapons you carry. Shadow Song gave you away immediately.”
The woman's hand went immediately to the sword sheathed at her back. “How do you know its' name?”
“As though I wouldn't know my own creation,” Farf said with a snort.
The woman's eyes widened slightly. “Then you really are Jeirn.”
“I was. Same soul, different body. Then again, you wouldn't know much of the death and rebirth cycle would you, once born.”
Before Farf could blink the woman had drawn the sword and had it pointed directly at him. He grinned a little and a flash of light to his immediate right revealed a long and wicked looking sword. He grasped it and mirrored her stance.
“Know what this is, bairn?” he asked softly, almost mockingly. “No? You'll learn.”
She had barely time to bring the sword she was holding up to attempt blocking his forward slash. She had missed the two short jabs he had made until she felt pain in her right side and upper arm. She felt a burning sensation spread in the wake of the cuts nearly making her drop her sword.
“Realize what you're dealing with now?” Farf asked, advancing on her and levering the tip of the sword underneath her chin.
She nodded minutely, taking care to avoid the blade. “How do you have Death Song? It's been missing for over a century.”
“And Fire Song is where it has been for millennia, with its rightful owner. I could ask the same question of you concerning your blade. Added to that is the fact only certain people can hold it much less use it effectively,” he said, leaning forward so that the tip of the blade pressed slightly into the skin of her throat. “Now, if you please, I'd like your name and why you were watching me.”
“I . . . just . . .”
“Farfarello?”
He was distracted long enough for her to disappear. He turned to find Sunny and Ken walking toward him into the clearing. He sighed and released the sword; it hovered in the air for a moment before vanishing again.
“Farf, are you okay?” Ken asked. “You look like you've seen a ghost.”
“Hmm. Perhaps a vision is a more appropriate term,” Farf said thoughtfully. “I need to speak to Edana.”
“I think Goddess is still in the States. Why?”
“I think she'll find this tale interesting.”
“What tale might that be, Farf?” Sunny asked.
“Someone that neither Edana nor I know has Shadow Song.”
Sunny gasped. “How is that possible?”
“I have no idea but I intend to find out.”
Ken was looking back and forth at Sunny and Farfarello in confusion. “I don't get it.”
“Before Edana died I forged three swords of somewhat interesting value. One for her to carry through to the Otherlands, one for myself, and one to support and defend her bloodline. Fire Song is where it should and always has been, with Edana. Death Song finds me every time I'm reborn. But Shadow Song can only be held or wielded by one of Edana's family members. It's extremely odd that this girl has it in her possession.”
“Well, Goddess' descendants span centuries,” Sunny said. “She could be related somewhere down the line.”
Farf shook his head. “I don't think you understand. It would have to be someone who had very close ties to her. I doubt that even you or one of the twins could carry it. That's why it's so strange that this woman that I've never seen before has it with her.”
“Well, we'll have to contact Goddess once we get back to the States,” Sunny said.
“Why are we going back so soon?” Farf asked.
“Because Omi is showing the same markings that Nagi is and she wants you to take a look at both of them to see if you can shed some light on the subject.”
Farf grinned. “Always good to be needed. I knew studying markings on the human body would come in handy someday.”
