Omi closed his eyes tightly then opened them again, hoping that what he had just seen on the computer screen would have gone away. It hadn't. In cold black and white it stated that Toyano Mitichi had sold his only daughter into slavery to pay off his gambling debts to a certain criminal organization. And to bolster his flagging political career. The press had been told the girl had died of a massive aneurism and her body had been cremated. So, naturally, everyone felt deep sympathy for the grieving father and voted for him. There was nothing to indicate the girl's mother knew anything about the gambling debts or where her daughter really was as she and Mitichi had been divorced for five years and he had custody of the girl. Mitichi's daughter Aika was all of nine years old.
The list went on and on. People who had sold their daughters or sons to pay off debts or to gain political power. The oldest child was fifteen. Omi copied off the information to CD and printed out the pages, knowing that the site would likely disappear once someone knew it had been hacked. His hands clenched and unclenched the corners of the desk. The horrifying thought had come to him that he could have very well been one of those children if things had worked out differently.
“Hey, Omi,” Ken said from behind him, “What's wrong?”
Omi pointed silently to the computer screen. Ken read over his shoulder for a few seconds before making a gagging noise and turning away.
“That's just . . .”
“So incredibly sick.”
Ken nodded and turned back around. “Are you okay?”
“Not really. No. I mean we knew there might be some kind of slavery ring attached to the groups but I don't think it actually registered that it could be children. And I can't help thinking that given different circumstances; any one of them could have been me.”
Ken smiled slightly and ruffled Omi's hair. “Yeah. But you aren't one of those kids. Could have been doesn't count. You're safe and you're alive. That's all that really matters.”
“I suppose we'd better go tell the others what I found out,” Omi said dejectedly. It was killing him that he knew they'd have to wait and find out the exact location of where the children were being kept. There was a good possibility that they were strung out through the city and possibly the country. How many more days or weeks would these kids have to suffer?
“Don't worry, we'll get a handle on this as soon as possible,” Ken said, walking off to find Aya and Yohji.
Omi only nodded, still feeling sick.
A few miles away Nagi was having a similar reaction to what he had found in one of the databases. Only he was unfortunate enough to have found pictures.
“Hey, boy, whatcha doing?” Schuldig asked, bouncing into the room and peering over Nagi's shoulder at the screen. “Ick! I didn't know you were into kiddie porn and bondage. But considering you're a kiddie . . .”
Nagi psychically slapped him. “Baka, this is from one of the websites connected to who we've been investigating,” he said, putting a blank disc in and starting the CD burner.
“Then why are you making copies if you're not interested?”
Nagi sighed a long suffering sigh. “Because, idiot, websites like this tend to move or to disappear fairly frequently. Especially after they find out they've been hacked. Now go away so I can do my reports.”
“You are so boring,” Schuldig said, bounding back out again.
“Like I care what you think,” Nagi mumbled under his breath, trying to stop the nauseated rolling of his stomach.
Nagi, Omi, are you guys okay? Came Ghost's voice into both of their heads.
Omi's head shot up from where he had been resting it on the desk. He still hadn't quite gotten used to hearing someone talk to him in his mind. The three teams had only been working together for a little over a month at this point. The initial meeting was spent with Star and Skye standing between the warring factions trying to keep them from killing each other. Leaving the younger members of the teams to their own devices. It hadn't taken long for he, Nagi and Ghost to realize that they were connected somehow. It was a natural thing for Nagi, living with Schuldig and Crawford. It had never bothered Ghost because it had been an inherent ability since her birth. However, it was something very new to Omi, who had slightly freaked out upon hearing Nagi and Ghost's mental conversation the first time all three groups had gotten together. It also seemed that they had a natural clear path between each other because their conversations weren't something even Schuldig could tap into.
More or less, Nagi said.
Yeah, I guess so.
Don't give me that. You're both upset about something, I can feel it.
We just . . . found a few things relating to the case that were less than pleasant. Or at least I did, I don't know about Bombay.
Oh, yeah. Needless to say, I feel unclean just reading through the material.
You found close to what I did, then.
Will one of you at least tell me what you found?
It's really too disgusting to describe, Omi said.
At least you didn't get pictures.
Pictures? Omi questioned.
Yes, Nagi said and sent them both a brief mental flash of the last picture on screen.
Okay, now I'm really going to be sick, Omi said.
Right behind you, was Ghost's reply.
How do you think I feel? I had to sit here and look at the damn things for close to half an hour while they burned to disc.
How many of them are there? Omi asked, wondering why it would take so long to burn something to a CD.
Thousands.
Oh, God!
I doubt any deity in their right mind would claim this. When do you two report in on this?
Ken just went to get the other two.
Schuldig should be back any minute, he wouldn't want to miss something like this since he's the nosiest creature on the planet.
No. I think one of Blaze's husbands holds the record for nosiest creature on the planet.
I don't want to know.
Neither do I.
So, a likely meeting of the minds in a few hours.
Probably.
Okay. I'll see you guys in a little while. Blaze is going to go completely nuclear on this.
