“Anyone seen Farf?” was Schuldig's question upon entering the kitchen.
Ghost, Nagi and Omi all shook their heads. “Not since earlier this morning,” Ghost said, grinning slightly as she looked at the boys.
“Do I even want to know what went on up in Star's room last night?”
“Not unless you plan on joining her ever growing harem for the next round,” Sunny said, passing him to get to the coffee pot.
“Nah. I'm a one on one sort of guy,” Schuldig said, smirking. He winked at Nagi who rolled his eyes.
“Since when? You're the biggest slut I've ever met.”
“Aside from Yohji,” Omi said.
“Or Star,” Ghost said. “But in her defense, I think Balinese and Abyssinian were more interested in each other than her.”
From upstairs all of them heard a loud thud and then the screaming began. Not the good, in the middle of a stellar bonk kind of screaming. But the you bastard how the hell did I get into this situation because it's embarrassing and I'm going to take it out on you since you're here, kind of screaming.
“Wouldn't have taken Oracle to predict that,” Skye said, moving over to the stove. “Do you want bacon, Mastermind?”
“Sure. I take it this happens often?” Schuldig asked.
Skye shrugged. “Often enough. I'm surprised Goddess hasn't strangled her yet. She's always very serious about no playing around while on mission.”
“Somehow I don't think anything gets between Star and her pleasures,” Schuldig said.
Star came bounding into the kitchen a few minutes later. She was followed closely by an oddly silent Ken, who was rubbing his wrists and not making eye contact with anyone. He was smiling an oddly bemused smile though.
“Good morning, everyone,” she said brightly before plopping down into a slightly startled Schuldig's lap. “Has anyone seen Berserker?”
“You mean he hasn't left the country after last night?” Schuldig asked jokingly.
Star wiggled around in his lap so she could look at him properly. “Of course not! Hmm.” She gave her hips another experimental twitch. “I thought you only liked guys,” she said, one eyebrow going up in question.
“Hey, I can go with whatever happens to be writhing in my lap.”
“If you two don't mind. Some of us are trying to eat. Not to mention there are children present,” Sunny said.
“They are hardly children, Sunny,” Skye said. “I'm sure they've seen worse at school.”
“Back to finding Farf,” Schuldig said.
“The last time I saw him, he was headed for the training room to talk to Goddess,” Skye said.
“You mean Gran is home?” Star said, her eyes going wide for a moment. “Shit!” She bounced up from Schuldig's lap and started for the stairs.
“What the hell?” Sunny said.
“She's got “If You Want Blood” on loop in the training room,” Star said over her shoulder.
“SHIT!!” The rest of Red Shaman bolted from their seats and started to follow her.
“What?” Schuldig said. The rest of them had gotten up to go after.
“Goddess only plays that song when she's inclined to physically beat the living hell out of someone,” Skye explained.
“You may not have much of a team mate left,” Ghost said to Nagi.
“Farf can take care of himself.”
“Not against Blaze. I've seen her take out nearly a dozen armed men with her bare hands.”
On the second floor landing, they all heard the obvious sounds of a blazing row between Aya and Yohji. Skye sent her sister a look and Star veered off to defuse the situation. The rest of them made their way down to the training room. The music vibrating the floorboards as they approached.
Upon opening the door they heard something none of them had expected. There was a clash of swords, the thunder of AC/DC music and the unmistakable sounds of laughter. Not maniacal or insane laughter but genuine and joyous from both parties fighting. The room looked as though it had been hit by a SWAT team: Training equipment was thrown haphazardly everywhere, the punching bag was ripped to shreds, daggers and throwing stars were embedded into every uncovered surface of the walls.
Both Blaze and Farf were panting slightly and from what anyone could tell they were bleeding from various wounds. It was difficult to tell who was cut up the worst as they were moving so fast it was a blur to the naked eye. They seemed able to counter and match each parry and slash from the other. They were laughing the entire time.
“Oh, my gods,” Skye said, turning quickly to Sunny. “I've only seen one person in the universe who could match her like that.”
Sunny nodded and motioned them all out of the doorway. He closed the door behind them all and pointed everyone back downstairs.
Nagi and Schuldig sat down hard on the couch in the living room.
“What the hell was going on in there?” Schuldig said.
“I've never seen Farf move like that. I mean, he's always been fast and lethal but that was far beyond anything I've ever seen him do,” Nagi said, looking stunned.
“He'll be different than before,” Skye said. “Not by much. Just a lot faster and more lethal.”
“He's probably perfectly sane now as well,” Sunny said.
“Just tell us what's going on with him,” Schuldig said impatiently.
“What's going on with whom?” Crawford asked, coming into the room.
Schuldig and Nagi explained the changes they had seen in their other team mate to a completely floored Crawford.
“Why didn't I see this coming?”
“You wouldn't have,” Skye said. “Goddess makes certain everything concerning Jeirn stays under the radar so to speak.”
“What makes you so certain that Farf is this Jeirn person you're talking about?” Schuldig said.
“Simple. He can match Goddess on a physical fighting level. No one who's still mortal can do that. Only him in every lifetime he comes back to her,” Sunny said.
“So that means what?”
“Maybe we'd better explain this from the beginning as best we know it,” Sunny said.
Skye nodded. “When Goddess was alive, she was a shaman. She was unusual in the fact that she was a warrior as well. Her rank would probably have been close to a field marshal. Jeirn was her second in command in both areas. She evidently raised him as one of her own children when his parents died. Then trained him when he began showing magickal abilities. When it became clear she was dying in that lifetime, he swore he would remain her second forever. Now, keep in mind that when a shaman says forever, it really is forever. He promised to come back to her in every lifetime he was reborn. As we all understand it, he's kept that promise.”
“How the hell did he get so . . . so . . .” Nagi seemed at a loss for words.
“Lethal beyond measure?” Sunny said.
“Yes.”
“Again, as we understand it, he regains his former abilities when Goddess returns three things to him. First: is the woad tattooing that always marked a warrior in the time she was alive. Every mark signifies a battle fought. Second: is a gold necklace, called a torc, which signifies the contract he made to her. Third: is a gold ring, formed into the shape of a wolf's head, which reactivates all of his former magickal and fighting abilities added to whatever skills he gained in the current lifetime.”
Schuldig let out a long, low whistle. “Mein Gott.”
“And he remembers all of this every time?” Crawford said uneasily.
“Yes. Always. Without fail. It usually activates the minute they come into contact with one another,” Skye said, frowning slightly and glancing at Sunny. “I wonder why it took so long this time. We've been working with Schwarz for months now.”
“The geas probably had to work its self through his iron clad case of the crazies,” Sunny said.
“What the hell is a geas?” Crawford asked.
“It's a binding magickal contract. Usually made to prove one's worth to the gods. Though it can be made between those who are magickally inclined. As it was in this circumstance. It was predominantly a Welsh/Irish thing but migrated. At least the word did,” Ghost said. “It's a do or die sort of contract.”
“Meaning?” Crawford prompted.
“You do what you promised to do or you die. Simple as that.”
“Goddess did give him a loophole though,” Skye said. “She made him phrase it so she had to ask if he would be her second in whatever lifetime. That way if he wasn't interested a particular time around he could get out of it without having any problems. As it is, the geas isn't bound to Farf himself but rather the soul currently contained in his body.”
“So, what does all of this mean? Is he going to leave us and stay with Goddess?” Schuldig asked.
“Doubtful. He's usually only around when he's needed. Though I wouldn't try to make him do something that counteracts what Goddess wants him to do. He'll go on her orders first and foremost. He's almost always been involved in some sort of special forces, military, assassin team, anything that involves using certain skills. A word of warning though. He almost always dies before he's thirty.”
Crawford took off his glasses and cleaned them then said slowly, “Considering the chosen profession of all of us, that's hardly surprising.”
