“Bastard!” Blaze snarled. “Skye, you and Isakk get Oracle to a hospital. Everyone else, pull back to the compound. Now. You too, Gwynedd. I want to know what the hell is going on around here.”

Skye nodded and gathered Crawford and Schuldig to her then phased them all to a hospital in Chicago.

Schuldig blinked up at the massive building. “Why are we here and not in Japan?”

“I thought it would be better. Considering we'll probably have to make at least one more trip back to the compound,” she said. “Oracle, can you stand?”

“No,” he said weakly.

“I'm sorry. I should have known,” Skye said, she shifted Crawford then slid one arm around his shoulders and the other behind his knees. “Schu, no one sees this.”

Schuldig snorted. “As if they would,” he said while reaching into the minds of the hospital staff, visitors and patients.

Skye smiled at him and carried Crawford directly into the ER, not bothering to stop at the desk or waiting area. She settled him down on one of the gurneys and turned to face an annoyed looking nurse.

“You can't just . . .”

“Madam, he has multiple stab wounds and has lost copious amounts of blood,” Skye said, giving the woman's mind a none too gentle nudge in the direction of cooperation.

“What blood type is he?”

“Type A,” Schuldig supplied and watched the nurse dash off to get help. “Oddly appropriate.”

Crawford tried to glare at him but found he was too tired and thought it really wasn't worth the effort.

“Here, give me those,” Schuldig said, taking Crawford's glasses as the ER staff came in and began bustling around him.

Schuldig and Skye found themselves shooed from the ER and into the waiting area after it was determined that they weren't injured as badly as Crawford was.

“Must have been hard to tell who was damaged the worst. All three of us are covered in blood,” Schuldig said.

“There is that,” Skye said thoughtfully. “Are you sure you should be moving around so much? I know for a fact you have several broken ribs, a fractured arm and a dislocated shoulder.”

“I'll live. I've had worse. Hurts like hell to take a deep breath though.”

“I'll fix things on you as soon as I can,” Skye said.

“It's not that critical, Skye,” he said, putting his good arm around her. “I know you're tired.”

“I can't deny that,” she said, leaning her head on his shoulder. They stayed that way for a few minutes.

“Skye, won't they think it's weird that all of his wounds are parallel and the same length?” Schuldig said after the thought crossed his mind.

“They'll never notice it.”

“We can't let him stay here for very long . . .”

“Don't concern yourself. We won't be staying. We'll only be here long enough for them to finish the transfusions,” she said, looking askance at him. “I know what you and Star found in Bricru's mind.”

“How do you know that?”

“Simple. She and I are linked. You and I are linked. Between the two of you it was practically broadcast to me.”

“Oh.” He nodded and fell silent for several minutes. He began trying to peer into the ER where they had drawn the curtains around Crawford's gurney. “Will he be okay?”

“Yes,” she said tiredly. “Just as soon as he gets enough blood in his system for his organs to function properly on their own.”

“They haven't been?”

“No.”

“Then what's been keeping him alive?”

Skye shrugged. “The fact that he has divine energy going through him.”

Schuldig looked at her suspiciously. “There's something else as well. You've been keeping him alive and repairing the damage to his body.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“That should be obvious. Because you love him.”

Schuldig stared at her for a few moments. “Have I told you how much I love you lately?” he said hugging her hard. “Ow!”

Skye laughed. “Forget you're broken too?”

“Yeah, well . . .”

“I'm really too tired to laugh too much, Schu. I'm sorry I can't fix you just now.”

He tried to shrug but winced. “This should be tons of fun considering the fracture is on the same arm as the dislocation.”

“I'll heal the fracture before I put your shoulder back into place. I can't repair any of the damage with it out of socket like it is now. Don't concern yourself. I'll have Oracle sit on you,” she said with a slight grin.

“Maybe I don't want him sitting on me anymore,” he said, not meeting her gaze. He played absently with the bracelet still miraculously on her left wrist.

“Schu,” Skye said gently. “Please don't make this any harder than it already is.”

“I know you and I can't really work, Skye. I know you're physically dead. That the body you were originally born with is dust and dry bones by now. I just . . . I don't want to lose you when this is all over.”

“You won't. We can worry about all the rest of this when everything calms down a bit.”

“Good,” Schuldig said, leaning his head against her shoulder.

They sat in the waiting room, watching others some and go. An hour stretched into two which stretched into four. Schuldig got up repeatedly and annoyed the ER staff about Crawford's condition. Then proceeded to annoy everyone else within a three mile radius out of boredom.

“When do you think . . .” Schuldig began, only to be interrupted by a strident voice coming from the ER.

“Damn it! I am perfectly capable of making it to the restroom of my own volition.”

“You know, I would have known that was Brad even if I didn't recognize the voice. I think they have him reloaded enough to function,” Schuldig said.

“Obviously,” Skye said.

“And I insist upon remunerations for my destroyed tuxedo.”

“Scheisse. We'd better get him out of here before they rethink helping him live.”
