Chapter One:
Tokyo 1879
After the Bakumatsu(^_^)
A small child hid in the alley behind one of Tokyo's shabbiest inns, remnants of what's left after the fall of the Tokugawa Shogunate, silently watching a young couple make their way to the noodle stand just a few yards from the inns front doors. The child sniffed the air as the scent of yakisoba noodles and okonomiyaki wafted his way.
Licking his lips in anticipation and hunger, the child waited for the right opportunity to show itself. There, the man made a gesture with his hand and dropped his slice of okinomiyaki onto the dirty street. The child held back waiting for the couple to distance themselves a little further, then when he judged it safe made a dash for the scrap of food before a dog or a street rat could claim his dinner, and promplty shoved it into his mouth savoring the delicious flavor of warm okonomiyaki.
The swift movement caught the womens eye and she turned to face the dirty child.
"Look Shuichi, poor thing looks it hasn't eaten for days" the red haired women spoke to her husband as she tried to approach the child.
Taking a few steps back the child hesitated, keeping a wary eye as the woman held out her hand to him offering another slice of food.
Not knowing whether to trust this lady or not the child only hesitated some more, remembering when the last person who offered him food only did so to get him close then started touching him and rubbing his hands all over him. But when the dirty mand pushed his tongue into his mouth the child bit him hard and ran away.
But this lady didn't look like the dirty man, she had a warm smile and kind eyes. He looked at the man named Shuichi and saw he also had a warm smile and concern in his big brown eyes.
Not wanting to let an opportunity of free food slip by he rushed forward and snatched the food from the ladys hand and quickly retreated back stuffing the slice into his mouth before they changed their minds and demanded it back.
"What do you think Shuichi?" the woman said as looked at her husband then the small child.
"I'd like to throttle the parents for letting the child roam free like this, it's not right she should be out this late at night. I bet she's only three maybe four years old at the most, what are her parents thinking?" Shuichi shook his head and crossed his arms clearly in disapproval.
"brat's got no parents", answered the owner of the noodle stand, "and mind ya that's a boy ya're look'n at not a girl."
"a boy" the woman whispered as she took in the boys appearance."but he's wearing a little girls kimono, why is that?" she asked.
"dunno just is, that's what's he's been wearing ever since he got here."answered the shopowner.
"how did he get here?" asked Shuichi.
"him and some lady arrived by ship just th'other day, she was carri'n him and as soon as she got off the boat just drop'down dead she did. Lit'l brat's been here since then just roam'n and scaven'gn around. Police tried to catch him few times but he's quick he is, can't get but a few feet towards 'fore he runs away quick as light'ng." the old man spoke pointing towards the child.
"oh Shuichi we can't just let him stay here, he's an orphan he's parents were probably killed during the Bakumtasu. What are we going to do?" she asked wiping a few tears from ther eyes.
"the only thing we can do Manx,we're going to take him home with us. You said you always wanted children, and Buddha has yet to grant us with one of our own. So this must be his way of giving us another chance." Shuichi said as he knelt down to be eye level with the child.
"besides he needs to be cleaned and fed properly, staying on the streets is going to only endup killing him, and it looks like nobody here wants him around so we'll be doing everyone a favor." he said.
"oh Shuichi" Manx said shaking her head and smiling lovingly at her husband as she knelt beside him towards the boy.
"come here child we won't hurt you" she said, holding out her hand in a peace offering.
The child just looked at her, there was no food in her hand so he should'nt even bother to look at her but something about this young married couple gave him a sense of security, something he hasn't felt since before the streets.
Sensing no real malice or danger from her, the boy slowly inched further and when he touched her outstretched hand she pulled him slowly to her and smiled at him.
"you have lovely red hair, sweetheart, just as red as mine maybe even darker, it's hard to tell with all the dirt in it. But your eyes are a beautiful lavender love." Manx lifted the child in her arms craddling him in a hug.
"what should we call you? Mmm...I know we'll call you Aya"
"Aya? Why Aya love, he's a boy..Aya's a girls name." Shuichi stated.
"because we thought he was a little girl at first and because he just as pretty as one,No he's prettier than a girl, he's beautiful. My beautiful little Aya, no one will ever hurt you, and I promise you'll never want for food again ever!"Manx said looking at the Aya in her arms already feeling warm and sleepy.
"let's go home he needs a bath and some rest" Shuichi led his wife in the direction of the inn they were staying at.
"yes but first he needs more food,he looks malnurished and he'll need some clean clothes and.."
"one thing at a time love" shuichi laughed heartedly seeing the mischivious gleam in her eyes at the idea of shopping for Aya.
"oh Shuichi we're a family now" Manx spoke softly.
"yes Manx our family has started. I feel this is only the beginning."
