Chapter 44

Innocent Blood

Yohji smiled sadly as he shifted the angel's arm over his shoulder, trying to give him more support. "It's all those damn heavy muscles that I love so much so I'll deal. Can you come down the ladder after me? I can try to catch you if you fall."

Enzeru laughed. "I will crush you. I will go through the wall if I lose my grip, you won't have to catch me." He stopped at the top of the ladder and waited as Yohji let go of him.

Yohji looked at him unhappily but knew that his lover was telling the truth. "Alright love. But if we stay close maybe I can help support you at least a little." He stepped over the edge and climbed down several rungs before stopping and waiting for his lover to come over.

Enzeru knelt and began to turn to descend the latter. He started to get dizzy at the motion and stopped, closing his eyes and bracing himself against the wall. He slowly stood and decided that perhaps quicker was better than slower and jumped off the roof, landing hard on the ground below the ladder.

"Enzeru, damn it." Yohji kicked his feet off the ladder rungs and let himself slide down until his feet hit the walkway. "You could have hurt yourself worse." He got his shoulder back under the other man's arm and started for the stairs and down to the second floor.

Enzeru chuckled as he let Yohji lead him down the stairs. "I am hungry, I won't break." He kissed Yohji's neck and stretched his wings out behind him a bit as he held his head. Gabriel's voice kept echoing through his mind, telling him something about the only way to survive. He shook his head. He didn't need to remember to know, he had known all along. He frowned and looked forward, warding off the voice.

"Can you rest first before we go? Or do you need to go now?" Yohji asked turning worried eyes on the dark angel, it hadn't been that long since he'd fed the night before. He was too weak for just the hours since. "Enzu what happened?"

Enzu shook his head. "The tenshi was there when I fed from the Crawford man. He brought me back here and fed from me in return, taking everything but what I needed to stay alive." He felt a burning inside him, much like the feeling of when he was tenshi. He growled deep in his chest and spoke through clenched teeth. "He knew what I would have to do! That is why he did it. It isn't Zennou that wants me back, it's him!" He clenched a fist and slammed it against the wall next to them, his hand going through the plaster easily. He looked at his fist embedded in the wall, surprise evident on his face.

Aya yanked his door open at the loud bang, dressed in normal clothes for working the flower shop. "Will you two just take it somewhere else?"

Enzeru turned and growled at him. He didn't like the sudden rage that had built inside him; it was too much like before. He withdrew his arm from the wall and bared his teeth, wanting to rip the man apart, more so than before.

Aya narrowed his eyes at Enzeru. "What are you growling at, demon spawn?"

Yohji pushed open the door to his apartment and pushed Enzu inside. Then turned to look at Aya. "Damn it Aya. Just shut up and leave us alone and we will take this somewhere else!"

Enzeru looked down at Yohji, suddenly calm. "Can I feed from him? It would be fun to watch him struggle."

Yohji turned his head and looked at his lover the smile tugging at his lips as he turned his back on the redhead and finished getting himself and his lover into the apartment. "Right now I wouldn't even care, but no. Anyway you said that you couldn't feed from an innocent that you would be taken back. He's not marked is he?" Yohji's eyebrows went up in sudden worried thought.

"You're fucking a vampire?" Aya glared at Yohji and Enzeru as if they were nothing but dirt as they vanished into the apartment. "Whatever."

"No actually he's an angel of death Aya," Yohji said turning back for a moment.

"Fitting for you, at least you didn't get me killed off like your last lover." Aya went back inside his apartment to finish dressing.

Yohji stiffened then reached back and slammed the door to his own apartment and began to help his lover to the bed where he could rest. He grit his teeth fighting back the memories the words had invoked.

Enzeru growled again. He didn't like the redhead, but as with all humans, the man intrigued him. He sank down into the bed with a heavy sigh and leaned back to lie down. He was tired. More so than he could recall ever being since he had become mortal. He slipped down under the covers until he was flat on his back, then curled onto his side and closed his eyes.

Yohji looked at his lover. It was the first time he'd known his lover to actually close his eyes in what seemed to be sleep. He had said that he didn't need sleep. It only drove home to the tall blonde how seriously drained his lover was. And what had he meant that the one who attacked him had known what would happen?

What he would have to do. Yohji had a feeling that it was more than what they had talked about already and that it upset his lover very much. Pulling the covers up higher over his lover, he leaned down to kiss him gently.

Enzu turned his head towards the kiss and pressed their lips together. He felt the questions churning through his lover's mind and pulled him onto the bed beside him, nuzzling his face in his hair.

"What do you want to ask me?"

"What did you mean? What will you have to do? Who did this? The angel you told me about earlier? The one… the one I couldn't protect you from?" The words stuck in his throat thinking of the other person he'd loved and not been able to protect. He shifted closer just needing to feel his lover to know he was there.

Enzeru gathered him in his arms and pulled him close. He let out a heavy sigh and frowned as he nodded. "It was the same tenshi. You should not feel guilty about what happened. He was too strong for even me at the time; there was nothing that you could have done. As for what I have to do…" He hugged Yohji tighter, not wanting to voice the answer, but decided to just say it all and get it over with.

"The tenshi have survived so long because of the innocent blood they take. We do not only take those marked for hell. We take everyone to his or her final place. Feeding off the blood of innocents at their death made us immortal, so to speak. I chose not to take the innocents, the urge to feed from them was too great." He sighed again, tipping Yohji's chin up so he was looking into his eyes. "To live, I must feed off the innocent. Without their blood, I will continue to grow weak until I die. I do not want to do this, it will take me back to Zennou, to **him**…I have not taken innocent blood in a long time, thus it was easy for the tenshi to drain me. To fully regain my strength, it is unmarked blood that I need."

Yohji closed his eyes as he listened. No matter what happened it seemed that he would lose the man he was falling in love with. "Do you have to totally drain the person before you are pulled back to heaven?"

Enzeru shook his head. "I don't have to take their life, but in this state, I may not be able to stop myself, so quit thinking it Yohji. You forget, I can read thoughts when I want to."

"Then what will you do?" The blonde ex-detective asked. "I could go to the kitchen and do it. You could heal me after. Just enough to get your strength back," he urged desperately not willing to contemplate losing the angel.

Enzeru thought a moment; he could feel his lover's desperation and sighed, his nod barely audible. "Ok. I won't drink from you directly…" He looked away and released Yohji, turning away from him with another sigh. "Let's get this over with."

Aya finally finished and left his apartment, totally ignoring Yohji's before heading downstairs to help Omi and maybe pull him out of the pot if he was still stuck in there. He reached the shop to check on Omi, first looking at the pot, then the rest of the store. "Omi, where are you hiding now?"

Omi stuck his head out of the backroom his eyes snapping angrily. "I closed the store early because I didn't know if you or Yohji would be back down to help and can't handle the after school crowd on my own. If you are going to be down here with me then you can open back up. Let me finish potting this last bulb and I'll be back out to help you." He lifted the bulb in his hand and showed it to the redhead.

"Keep up that attitude and I'll plant you with that bulb, maybe you'll sprout some respect." Aya frowned at him. "You think I would let you be alone while Yohji is sucking up to Death up there? You're all helpless, the lot of you." He leaned against the counter, waiting. "Fine, plant."

"I'll be right back," Omi said as he stepped back into the other room to finish planting the last bulb ignoring the cutting remarks. He didn't want to get into a yelling match with the other man, not today.

Yohji looked at his lover, he could see the reluctance and was worried that he had pushed further than he should have. But he just couldn't give up and he was afraid his lover would let himself die before doing what he needed to live.

He prayed he was doing the right thing and hurried out of the apartment to their shared kitchen. He pulled a small sharp paring knife from the knife block and laid it on the counter. Out of an overhead cupboard he took the biggest glass he could find and placed it beside the knife. Finally he pulled a clean towel from the kitchen linen closet and their big first aide kit.

He moved the towel and cup to the table, laying out two good thick sterile pads and the tape. Then taking the alcohol from the kit he went over to the sink. He poured alcohol over the knife and then over his wrist.

He bit his lip as he looked down at the wrist he'd chosen to use. It was the one he wore the watch on that held his wire, that way the scar would be hidden if there were one. There were a few times he'd thought about ending it all right after Asuka, but he'd never gotten desperate enough and then he'd found other things to stick around for. Now he'd found a reason desperate enough, but not to die.

He sat down at the table, resting his arm on the towel. Slowly he sliced the sharp knife through the vein, gritting his teeth against the pain. As the blood began to pour from the vein he grabbed the cup and placed his wrist over it watching as the blood slowly filled it.

Just past the half way mark of the cup he began to feel lightheaded. He looked towards the door suddenly realizing what would happen if anyone saw him. He wondered how much he could actually let spill. He had to make sure that Enzu had time to heal him after.

He could feel the weakness in his limbs by the time the cup was full and he shakily sat it on the table while he grabbed the sterile pads and tape. He covered the wound then wrapped the towel around it also to absorb the blood.

Picking up the glass, he made his way back to his apartment on wobbly legs, but managed to keep from spilling anything. He pushed open the door and looked in at his lover. "Enzeru," he murmured as he moved closer to the bed and set the glass on the nightstand and backed away towards the door.

Enzeru stirred as the door opened. He could feel Yohji's weakness, but the scent of the blood was too strong. He sat up slowly, gripping his jaw as his teeth began to grow at the sweet coppery smell permeating the air. He reached for the glass and began to drink slowly, still dizzy from sitting up.

He felt the familiar sweet sensations of pleasure course through him at the taste and he began to growl unconsciously, deep within his chest. He tipped the glass back, licking at the sides as the glass emptied down his throat. He gripped the cup in both hands as his vision went white around the edges and he felt the heat surge through his body.

His wings fluttered behind him, stretching the length of the room, drawing taut then relaxing as the electric sensations coursed through him, causing his back to arch and shudders to wrack his body.

He wanted more. His senses were hypersensitive now, he could smell the flowers in the shop below, hear the thoughts of everyone in the building. His growl grew louder as the last few drops rolled off the rim and he bit into the glass, shattering it in his mouth in his frenzy to get every last drop.

He dropped the cup to the floor, spitting out pieces of glass as the source of the blood filled his nostrils. He turned to Yohji, crawling across the bed catlike, his wings still stretched out behind him. He growled and his lips curled into a snarl.

"More…" He climbed off the bed on all fours and slowly approached Yohji, his grin revealing sharp canines covered in blood. He licked at them and gave his lover a look of wicked seduction.

Yohji stumbled backward until his back hit the wall beside the door watching his lover as he sat up following him with his eyes for a moment before picking up the glass and drinking. He stared as the Angel's teeth grew and grew.

He was trembling with weakness and not just a little fear as the dark angel gripped the glass with both hands draining it quickly. His knees gave out as the deep growling reached his ears and he slid down the wall watching in fascination and horror as his lover's back arched and his body twitched.

He curled his arm in tight to his body knowing his lover smelled the blood that still leaked heavily from his wrist. Yohji gasped as his lover actually bit through the glass and then turned his eyes to him, the growl growing. He watched as the dark angel climbed off the bed, stalking him like a tiger.

Yohji heard the whispered word and his gut clenched in a tight knot. But he'd known this was a risk. That what he was doing was dangerous. The look on his lover's face was terrifying and beautifully seductive at the same time. A memory flashed through his mind just for a second. He'd had his hand held out to his lover whose mouth and chin had been black with blood.

Slowly Yohji reached out with his uninjured hand, hoping that he could break through the obvious blood lust. His body was shaking and beginning to feel weightless from blood loss and he could barely keep his arm up. "Enzeru? Lover?"

Enzeru rubbed his cheek against the outstretched hand. He felt a pang of fear course through him and he stopped, his vision clearing momentarily, then it was gone. He turned his face to his lover, still nuzzling the hand to his cheek and licked up the inside of his arm. He leaned forward and licked again at the bandage on the bloody wrist. The smell was driving him insane and he bared his teeth to bite through it.

The fear coursed his mind again and he heard Yohji cry out his name in his thoughts. He looked up into the fearful jade eyes and shook his head violently. He didn't want to see the fear in his lover's eyes. The fear of him. He reached down and gripped the bloodied wrists, tearing off the bandages and set his lips against the wound, sucking lightly on it.

He couldn't shake off Yohji's fear, it pierced through his clouded senses and he began to chant, closing his eyes as he began to glow with the soft light white of his healing. He licked unconsciously now and then at the blood, not even realizing he was doing it. The wound sealed itself and Enzeru licked the last bit of blood away as he opened his eyes.

He looked around himself for a moment, not sure of what had just happened. The last thing he remembered clearly was being on the bed, smelling the blood. He licked his lips, uncertainty crossing his features until he tasted the blood there. He quickly looked to the wrist in his hand, covering still in only a few drops of blood, a tiny, hardly noticeable scar darkening the area in a light pink slash. He dropped the wrist and scooted violently away from his lover and hit the bed with a hard thud. His eyes were wide and his breathing labored as he looked at his blonde lover, trying to find the words to apologize.

Yohji watched his lover back away from him quickly; saw the horror and distress in the dark eyes. The last few moments were a blur of fear and not quite panic that he only barely remembered. He knew only that he'd been certain he hadn't gotten through to his lover. But somehow he had. His wrist was healed and only a tiny scar remained. He was still light headed and shaky but felt stronger.

Slowly he crawled across the floor to where the other man sat. He reached up and took his lover's face in his hands bringing their lips together in a soft kiss. "I'm alright, you didn't hurt me. You know I did this willingly and I knew the risks. I would and will do it again."

Enzeru flinched away at first, but relaxed as his lover's lips touched his lightly. He kissed back, not opening his mouth, instead letting their lips brush softly against each other in a feather light kiss. He shook his head softly at Yohji's words.

"No. I don't want to hurt you anymore." He let his breath out in a soft; deep sigh as a wave of exhaustion swept over him. "Could you lie with me for a while. I need to sleep." He gave Yohji a stupid grin and lifted himself onto the edge of the bed, holding out his hand to his lover as he scooted back.

Yohji matched the grin on his lover's face and nodded taking the hand to help hoist him off the floor. His head whirled slightly and he dropped down to sit on the bed. "Oh… remind me not to move so fast," he chuckled sheepishly. "I think a little sleep would be good for me too." He lay down and opened his arms to his lover.

Enzeru gladly curled into his lover's arms, sighing before falling into unconsciousness. He hadn't slept in, well, he didn't know how long. He didn't remember why he had never tried, if he had ever tried. The thoughts were swept away in his head as the dark comforting embrace of slumber over took him.
