Part 7:

REVENGE AT LONG LAST

The mission had gone smoothly. The target had been taken down without the slightest amount of trouble. Kaeri had just stood back and watched. Ideally smoking, and playing with the corner of Yohji’s jacket that she was wearing. It had almost become a trademark piece to her attire ever since that first morning she had put it on.
She didn’t care about the mission really. She wasn’t here for that fat bastard. She was here for a telepathic bastard. As they were making a final sweep of the main floor of the abandoned warehouse they were in, Kaeri all but collapsed. Hitting the ground on one knee and letting out a frustrated growl. Instantly both hands held a sai and her whole body was rigid. She stood up slowly and tried to get her ragged breathing under control.
“What’s going on?” Omi asked as he took in her state.
“He’s here.” she said her dead eyes shooting around from side to side. Trying to see something she could already feel.
“Mastermind?” Ken asked, though honestly already knowing the answer.
“No. Him.” she said, though not really focusing on Ken as she answered.
“Don’t you dare take off on us now.” Aya growled in a warning at her. She turned around to face him then, and Yohji who stood in-between their leader and her. Standing there he saw the look on her face. Determination beyond anything else, and fury to match.
“Don’t have to. He’s coming this way. He IS Schwarz.” she told the others just as the four members of the rival assassin group entered in to the building. Appearing from the shadows. As her eyes caught sight of them her mind swarmed. Brad Crawford stood dead center in front of her. Directly on his right was her target for the night, Schuldich. Further off on that same side was Nagi. To Crawford’s left was Farfarello. Brad’s eyes went slightly wide as he looked at the girl who now stood before him. He hadn’t seen this coming. And quite obviously too. She was supposed to be dead. He himself had killed her. Schu’s eyes nearly popped out of his head as he looked at her. He knew her, he couldn’t believe she was still alive. From what he had known, Crawford had killed her ten years ago. Yohji also took in the sight with understanding finally dawning. Schwarz, that’s where he had known the boy from Kaeri’s dream. He was a member of Schwarz. And the man that had tried to take Kaeri’s life, was Brad Crawford himself.
As Kaeri eyed the seen before her, memories long since covered up with thoughts of hate and anger filtered back in to place. She remembered now what he had taken from her. And it was standing next to him.
“YOU!” Schuldich was the first to break the uncanny silence between the two groups, staring in disbelief at the girl. A face from the vast pool that made up his mind, and the many that he had absorbed. Kaeri ignored his shout at the moment. Focusing on the soul source of all her problems, Crawford.
“You. You fucking bastard! You took him from me then left me for dead! Well it didn’t work did it asshole. I’ve lived up to my name finally. I’ve returned for him(*1), and to kill you!” She screamed out at him. Her eyes then took in the rest of the scene. And against everything that she ever wanted to happen, she realized what she had to do. She gave a pitiful glance to Schuldich, sorrow showing on her face that was completely void of her mask. Then she turned carefully to the rest of Weiss, never fully looking away from Crawford though.
“Are you sure once they break apart, you can take the rest of them down?” she asked. Aya gave her a sharp nod, never taking his eyes off of Schwarz either. Kaeri’s gaze then settled fully on Yohji.
“Yohji, you’re my friend. The only one I really have. Promise me you’ll take my revenge for me.” She nearly pleaded with him. Voice so covered in emotions it was clear to see that she was, for lack of a better term, powering up.
“What are talking about?” Yohji asked her. Turning to fully face her. More concerned with her then what Schwarz was going to do.
“Just promise Yohji!” she all but screamed at him.
“I promise.” he whispered out. Truly concerned with what this meant, but not about to abandon her. She nodded her head and whipped around to stare directly at Schuldich. She took a deep breath and stared at him with an unreal intensity. Letting out a pained scream as her entire force was thrown out of her and in to him. Her eyes finally gained color as the intensity of her attack could be read in them. Bright ocean blue burned deep from inside her, pouring out in to her eyes with a depth never before seen. Schuldich let out a small gurgled gasp as his nose stared bleeding. He fell down to his hands and knees. Letting out a choked, blood filled cough before he hit the ground. Dead. Brad stared at the body of his beloved for a second before dropping down next to him, looking for a pulse to confirm what he already knew was true. Kaeri’s eyes took one last look at that and collapsed to the ground with the knowledge at least that she had hurt him nearly as bad as he had hurt her. Just as her crumpled body hit the ground and her senses began to dim, she vaguely realized that Crawford was rushing her. Now very intent to kill her a second time, since he was unable to do it the first time. Stupid man. I’ll be dead on my own soon. She thought bitterly to herself. She ideally waited for him to get close and shot her. Just as she could sense his presence coming near she heard it.
“KAI!! NO!! GET AWAY FROM HER YOU ASSHOLE!!!” Nagi screamed out as he used his power to shove Crawford far away from the woman’s body, and disarm him at the same time. His own ocean blue eyes glowing in the same intensity as hers had moments ago. The young boy rushed forward and kneeled down next to Kaeri’s body. Pulling her head in to his lap. His tears trailing down his cheeks and on to her face.
“Kai, no. I never knew he tried to kill you. I’m sorry. Don’t leave me. I need you. You’re my onesan(*2).” Nagi sobbed out by the girl’s side. It caused a look of shock to pass across everyone’s face that was there. Except for Crawford. He had known, that’s why he had tried to kill her. So something just like this wouldn’t happen.
“It’s okay Naggles.” Kaeri rasped out. “I knew this would happen. I wasn’t as strong as I tried to pretend to be. I knew I wouldn’t live after I took Mastermind down. That’s why I wanted to kill Crawford first. To save you. I did finally come back for you Naggles. Just like my name says.” She was all but gone as she reached up and gently whipped a tear from his face. Yohji stepped forward then. Shooting his team a look to stay away from this. That no one was to touch her, or Nagi. Things finally made sense now. Everything fit together. Nagi was the boy from her dreams, he was her brother. Brad Crawford had been the one to try and kill her, to keep them apart. Schuldich only recognized her from the images that had slipped from Nagi, and knew how she had met her supposed end from Crawford’s mind.
“Nagi,” Yohji spoke to the boy holding his dieing sister. The boy looked at him with slight fear in his face.
“It’s okay. I wanna help.” he told the scared kid. “You still holding Crawford with your powers?” he asked. Nagi just slightly nodded his head. Not really understanding why Yohji was doing this.
“Then bring him over here, and hold him tight.” he told him as he bent down and scooped up Kaeri in his arms. Helping her stand on her feet as Nagi did as he was told. He gently took Kaeri’s hand and placed her gun in her hand.
“No.” she choked out. “I always thought of killing him the way he tried to kill me, but that’s to quick for him.” Yohji nodded knowing what she meant. He dropped the gun from her hand and replaced it with her sai. Using Yohji’s hand to help steady her arm she thrust the sai in to Brad’s chest. Twisting it for good measure with the help of her brother’s powers.
“Die. For me and my brother you stole.” she spoke to him. Her blue eyes glaring with all the strength she had left in to Crawford’s autumn brown ones. His face twisted in pain as he crumpled to the ground. Nagi’s power no longer holding him up as he died. Kaeri then collapsed back against Yohji. Any life she had left fading faster then before. Yohji let one of his own tears slid down his face as he gently handed her body back over to Nagi. Nagi looked at him with saddened, but thankful eyes. No words passed between them. They both knew everything now. Maybe because of whatever power Kaeri still had, maybe just because of their mutual love for her. Either way, it was over now. Nagi lifted his sister’s nearly dead body in to his arms. Her light weight not even making it necessary for him to use his powers, and walked away. Yohji looked around. At some point during the time that everyone had been watching Nagi, Yohji, and Kaeri, Farfarello had disappeared. Yohji took one look at the faces of the rest of Weiss and knew that they wanted answers. He wasn’t ready to give them, not now, not ever.
“Don’t touch the boy.” He finally said. His voice as cold as Aya’s. “Never. Let him be. He won’t ever cause us a problem again.” and with that Yohji walked out and in to the night. Letting the rest of Weiss follow him slowly. Leaving behind the cooling bodies of Crawford and Schuldich. Their work was done. Schwarz was no more, Kaeri had her revenge, and was free from Kritiker forever. Yet still, in light of that ‘good’ news, Yohji couldn’t help but cry the entire way back to the shop.

*1) Kaeri in Japanese means going back, or retuning. Kaeryn is a common German name, it would be about the same as Karen in the United States.

*2) Older sister
