DAY 2

Birman sat and elegantly crossed her legs. "We had the place where Aya-chan has last seen Abyssinian searched thoroughly... and not only once. But nothing was found. No trace, no hint whatsoever." She fixed her piercing gaze on each of the young men for a moment. "Any ideas on who might hold a grudge against Abyssinian?"

"Everyone who's tired of his miffy attitude," Ken joked and Omi elbowed him hard. "Ouch!" Ken protested and elbowed back.

Birman gave the two of them a scolding glare. "Any serious ideas on the issue?"

A moment of silence.

Yohji exhaled slowly, letting the blue smoke drift out the opened window. "Other than Schwarz no one comes to mind." He stubbed out the cig on the windowsill and flipped the stub out onto the pebbles of the driveway. When he turned he found the others looking at him in surprise. He shrugged. "Quite impossible, I know, but... who else really knows us? I mean... the people who know the guys working at the flower shop don't exactly strike me as criminals."

Ken snorted. "You don't know what kind of enemies he made in his past... A million I bet... with that attitude..." Again he was elbowed by Omi and he glared at the younger. "Damn! It's true though!"

"Knock it off, Ken," Yohji interrupted the other harshly. He closed the window, hard.

Ken muttered something but was silenced by Birman's firm voice. "Balinese's got a point there... We are not 100% certain Schwarz is eliminated, so there is a chance they might be behind this. And if they are, they will not be satisfied with having captured Abyssinian. He's only a means to an end. They are after all of you, after all of us."

Another moment of silence, this time a stunned silence though, as each one became aware of the meaning, of the threat.

Then Ken leaned back on the couch. "No need to worry," he said. "I'd say we're safe."

The others looked at him questioningly.

Ken shrugged. "We all know Aya..."

Raised eyebrows.

"He won't talk..." Ken twined his fingers behind his head. "The guy's a cold-blooded professional. They won't get anything out of him."

"And I suppose we shouldn't even investigate," Birman said in a deceitfully soft tone.

"Well..." Again Ken shrugged. "Maybe we should... Who knows... He doesn't really need us anymore..."

Yohji's eyes narrowed and his lips pressed to a thin line. He didn't like where these thoughts were headed...

"Now that his sister's awake... Who's to say he won't do us in..."

Slowly Yohji pushed off the windowsill, hands clenching into fists at his sides.

"I sure as hell wouldn't put it past him... He never really gave a damn about us anyway..."

Suddenly Ken cried out as pain exploded in his jaw, the punch sending him reeling back. Omi and Birman had been looking at Ken rather irritably, now they stared at Yohji in utter surprise as he stood over Ken, jade eyes blazing with anger. The next moment he was gone, the door slamming shut behind him.

"Damn!" Ken exclaimed, rubbing his assaulted jaw. "What the hell's gotten into him?!"

Omi just stared back and forth between the door and Ken. Birman thoughtfully looked out the window, where Yohji could be seen storming down onto the beach. After a moment she turned back to the others.

"There are still some things we can do. Considering Schwarz as wire-puller in this presents quite some possibilities. I will keep you informed." With that she left.

With a low groan Aya rose to his feet. Pain shot through each and every fiber of his body but he ignored it. This was one of those rare moments that he was left alone. He had successfully feigned unconsciousness and with that had driven a rather disappointed Farfarello away. He knew it had only worked because Farfarello's telepathic abilities weren't quite as developed as Schuldich's. Now he had to take advantage of the situation, and he had to move quickly. He figured that it wouldn't be long until Farfarello would be back, or worse, that Schuldich would come to check on him.

Quickly Aya moved over to the door. He knew it opened to the inside, to the left, and the hinges were so awkward that a fairly large crack opened between door and frame. It would be easy to see if the person coming in was alone or not, and at the same time he wouldn't be seen as long as the light inside was off.

Leaning at the wall the door would open against, Aya waited, eyes closed, closely listening to any sounds from the hallway. It seemed like hours had passed when Aya suddenly jerked up at hearing steps beyond the door. He had been damn close to drifting off and slumping to the floor. Quickly he straightened up and waited for the door to open, every muscle taut in hs hurting body.

The key turned in the lock with a scraping sound, then the handle moved down, Aya could see it in the faint shimmer of light seeping underneath the door. He held his breath. Damn, why does he take so long? Only a heartbeat, then the door opened, Aya peered through the crack and recognized Nagi. The red-head frowned slightly. What does he want again? He shook his head slightly. Another glance didn't reveal anybody following the boy...

Suddenly Aya threw himself against the door, slamming it right into Nagi's face. Completely shocked by the surprise attack the boy was knocked back so hard he crashed backwards into the wall on the opposite side of the hallway. The door sprang back from the force, opening wide.

Without losing one moment to the excruciating pain that was intent to make his body stop functioning Aya slipped through the open door. Nagi had slumped to the floor across the hall, knocked out cold, and obviously no one had heard or seen anything - no sound whatsoever spoke of anyone coming. That's almost too easy... Aya was breathing low and even, it helped to stay calm and keep the pain under control. Slowly he slipped out the door into the hallway.

White light exploded behind his eyes when cold steel slammed against his temple, splitting his skull with agonizing pain and sending waves of incapacitating weakness to every muscle. His body was thrown around and he crashed face down to the floor. Instinctively his stomach muscles contracted, curling up his body in order to get himself up to his knees, but a brutal blow across his back crushed the attempt and with a grunt Aya dropped back down. Numbly he sensed someone kneeling over him, bending down until he felt hot breath caressing the back of his neck, the side of his head, his ear, his cheek. He cringed.

"Did you really think we're that stupid?" Schuldich's smooth, dark voice inquired in a whisper close to his ear. Cold steel rested heavily on the nape of his neck. "Not very flattering." The weight was abruptly lifted from him and he was grabbed by the upper arms and yanked up, then forcefully pushed back into his prison.

Aya stumbled forward and dropped to his knees, falling face forward, his legs refusing to support his body weight any longer. His mind raced. How could that happen... What went wrong... Then realization hit him. Brad... A low groan escaped as he inwardly cursed himself. It had been too easy indeed...
