Chapter ten- The information please
Robin awoke to the sounds of a telephone ringing loudly right near her head. She rolled herself over, wondering if she should answer it or not. She was reaching for it, when it abruptly stopped in mid ring and the low voice of Amon could be heard outside the closed door of the bed room. She layed there quietly, and could tell Amon’s muffled voice was engaged with whoever it was that phoned. Her mind suddenly flashed back to the night before, as she became more awake. She felt her face flush again, as she remembered that Amon had walked in on her, and she was exposed... fully naked and ready for bed. She felt so mortified that the man had seen her like that, but she still found that she did not mind it either. Having the two conflicting thoughts at the same time was strange, and brought out a whole lot confusion as well. She made herself take in a deep breath and sat up.
Her embarrassment still right there, and she thought about just staying in the bedroom for a while, but she thought about it for a moment and decided not to do that. What ever her feelings were, she could not hide in the bedroom all day just because of that. She thought about how awkward it is going to be, seeing the man who had seen her completely naked... but hunger and the need to move around made her realize that hiding was not an answer.
Robin swung herself out of the bed, knowing that she indeed could not put off see him again, they were in this situation together. She just wiped a bit of sleep from her eyes and began to move around the room, keeping one eye on any movement that would tell if the door was going to open. She grabbed her dress where it hung in the closet and went in to the bathroom to start her routine.
Amon sat at the table in the main room, already almost fully dressed after being woken by the phone. He was talking on the phone while having a smoke with the other hand. He seemed really intent on what ever the person on the other end was saying to him, but he was speaking very little.
He finished the call after awhile and hung up the receiver. He seemed a little agitated from the call, stared at the televison with a blank look. He finished the smoke he had going, and picked up the phone.
“ Could we have some coffee and your breakfast special sent up to room 1335?” He asked, obviously ordering room service.
He had just put down the phone, when he heard the bedroom door open. He turned and saw the young girl come out of the room. He felt the pangs of guilt come across him as he remembered his little mistake from the night before. He looked at the girl, and by the red color on her face, she too was still thinking about it.
“ Good morning.” He said, trying to be pleasant, but finding it awkward
“ Good morning, Amon.” She said, after a hesitation to clear her throat.
Robin took a seat at the table, not really looking right at the man for long moments at a time. He seemed to be doing the same thing, as he just puffed away on his smoke. Silence fell between them, as they sat... the silence that came with extreme awkwardness.
After a long while, it was Robin who finally broke the silence.
“ Who was on the phone, Amon?” She asked
“ Michael.” He said, seemingly finally gathering himself. “ There is a break in the case, although a very small one.”
Robin perked up upon hearing the man’s words. She leaned a little on the table and looked at the man.
“ A break in the case?”
“ Karasuma and Haruto found the Assassin from last night’s hotel room in the slum section of town.” He said straight out to the young girl. “ Seems the Witch had a lot of money tucked into a belt pouch, as sum that was nearly two and a half million in American dollar bills stashed.”
“ That what they paid to kill me?” She asked flatly.
“ Looks like it that was.” He said, somberly. “ They took the money back to find and run any fingerprints they could find on the bills through the computer, and have contacted the US officials to check the serial numbers on them as well.”
“ Is there a chance that we can find the people that hired these witches through all of this?” Asked the girl.
“ There is always a chance after finding some evidence.” Said Amon, nodding at Robin. “ Who ever they are, we are trying to track them down.”
Robin fell silent again, as someone was at the door. Amon went off to answer it, and she just stayed there. It was the breakfast Amon had ordered. He brought it in, and they now had the chance to eat. While they enjoyed the room service, they exchanged quick glances over their plates, obviously their uneasiness had not dissipated any.
With their meal over, they just sat in silence for awhile, knowing that they could not leave the hotel. They continued to look over at one another off and on, neither one actually saying anything. The tension in the room thicker than anything, to say the very least, as both of them thought back only a few hours before.
After a long silent time, Robin stood up and walked off, in her mind she just did not know what, if anything, she could say. She retrieved her book from where she had placed it on a small table near the door to the bedroom. She told Amon that she was going to read for awhile, then went in and left the door open a little crack.
Amon found himself watching her go in to the room, but her mind was filled with the picture of the girl from the night before. The image of her naked, standing beside the bed was strong, and it caused his heart to race, his pulse to pound through him. He found him self lusting a little, yet it was different than just lust. It was a yearning he had never had before, that came with a multitude of other new emotions he had never felt before... and that really made him unnerved with it all. He just shook his head in disgust, as he realized how his mind was ping ponging all over.
“ Get a grip on yourself, Amon.” He growled to himself in an angered whisper. “ I am here to protect, not to be protected from.”
He just stood up and went back over to the sofa and found the remote to the television laying on a cushion. He thought that some tv would distract his mind away from these thoughts. He just flipped through channels until he found a baseball game on one, and decided that would distract him. He lit a smoke to maximize his attempt of moving his mind as far away from his feelings as possible.
The phone rang forty minutes later, just as he was becoming bored with the game. He picked up the receiver quickly, bounding from his seated position on the couch.
“ You there, Amon?” Asked the voice of Michael on the other end.
“ Do you have any other news?” He asked, as he saw Robin at the doorway, peering out.
“ I have something...” Said the youth, his voice seeming flat. “ Facial recognition cameras from the Airport security have alerted us of another ex-hunter that had came in on a flight from Nagano.”
The words made Amon set straight up.
“ Another Assassin?” He asked.
“Yes...” Said the lad.” Haru Kall, a witch originally from Pakistan, and was thought to be dead for over two years. SOLOMON thought he had died in his homeland twenty eight months ago in a battle with the STN in the country who was tracking him.”
“ Powerful, is he.” Asked the tall hunter, knowing already by the sound of the lad’s words..
“ Very!” The lad said, verifying it for the man. “ He has the ability to pull things apart with his mind... he is rated as a scale one Witch- the most powerful level of witches in SOLOMON’s levels.”
Amon just sighed and rubbed his eyes, as the news was not good as he had dreaded.
“Just great... another Assassin!” He breathed, as he thought over the information. “ Please tell me that you have a location, or even a clue on where this Witch is going to be?”
“ Can’t help you there, Amon.” Said a grim voiced Michael. “ Before we could get Karasuma and Haruto over to the airport to deal with him, he had simply disappeared from sight. No telling where he is... he must have had a car waiting for him from the moment he landed..”
“ Is he after Robin?” He asked, already knowing that was more than just simple speculation on his part.
“ That is not known...” The lad said. “ But the fact that this Witch has surfaced, after being in hiding for so long, I must think that he is hunting Robin.
Amon just sighed, as his mind went through a checklist..
“ Any word on finding any fingerprints on the money yet?” He asked. “ If we can determine who is putting out the hit on Robin, we can at least try to stop this.”
“ Not yet...” Said the boy. “ We should have the results in awhile.” The lad went silent for a moment. “ The chief thinks you should make plans to move at a moments notice, if you have to.”
“ I already am thinking on that one.” He said, hanging up on the boy.
He sat back in the chair he was in heavily, as he thought about what the young whiz kid had informed him on. He then looked up as he saw a movement from the corner of his eye. It was the young craft girl who had came into the room, and was standing looking at him.
Robin looked at the man, knowing by the look of deep thought in his eyes, she knew that something was going on. She waited for a moment for him to say something, but he stayed silent. She just silently glided slowly closer to the long maned man, her eyes never leaving him for a moment. She smoothly took a seat next to him on one of the chairs. She lowered her head for a moment, as if she was gathering her thoughts, then she snapped her head up and looked right into his face.
“ It appears to me that you have heard about another hired hunter is after me?” She asked.
“ Your assumption is correct....” He said, his eyes looking into her’s. “ There is one and he was seen just getting into the Tokyo airport awhile ago. Computer imaging confirmed that.”
“ So there is another Witch also going after me?” Shakily asked the young girl, as she was confirming what she knew for herself.
“ We do not know that for certain yet...” Amon answered, without a hesitation. “ But it is most likely that he is here for that purpose.”
Robin just looked down into her lap, her breathing was deep and hurried. She looked up and stared at him for long moments, her normally bright emerald eyes had changed to a very dark shade of green.
“ You are scared!” Acknowledged the man. “ I can see that.”
“ I am.” She said, her voice wavering a little with emotion. “ What comes next then? Are we going to have to move to another place to hide then?”
The man shook his head.
“ Not for right now...” He said. “ Perhaps it might come to that.”
The man looked at the girl, and actually give a reassuring smile. That was something Robin had never seen from her brooding friend. She looked at it, and felt a little lighter inside, knowing that he was here for the long haul... no matter what.
Robin broke a smile as she leaned over and put her hand on his shoulder.. That smile was coming through the mask of worry she had been wearing. He felt a rush of emotion when she did.
“ I trust you, Amon.” She said in her soft voice. “ I always have trusted you.”
The man snuffed, trying to keep his feelings out of it for now. He nodded, and watched the girl return to the bedroom. He stood up and poured himself a drink from the courtesy bar, to try and steady himself. He knew, they could become in real trouble, real fast. He downed the drink in a huge swallow and just stood there.
“ Damn!” He said to himself.
He knew that he had to stay focused, for both of their sakes. Personal feelings could not come into play right now, he told himself. Her life depended on him making sure that he could keep his emotions right out of all of this, and to protect her the best that he could.. He sat back down on the sofa, to ponder through all of this.
Once Robin was back in the bedroom, she just took a seat on the bed. Fear was welling up inside of her, and she was feeling the hurtful pangs of being able to do absolutely nothing at the moment. She lowered her head in prayer, seeking some divine direction in all of this... in the way she had been taught back with the brothers in the monastery. She raised her head after a long period of praying, feeling a little better than she had.
Robin laid down on the bed, book in hand to try getting herself calmed down even more. As layed back against the pillows she propped up, she realized that she could see Amon through the partially opened door. She looked at the man, and found herself wanting him to come in the room and wrap his arms around her, and she wanting to do the same to him. She realized that she was daydreaming at that point.
The girl sighed, as she knew that it was silly of her to think that way, but the pull of that need was strong. She looked through the crack in the door, watching as the man sat and sipped on a drink
“ That would never happen.” She told herself but her strong want was outweighed that logic.
She tried to return to her reading for awhile, but all she could think about was the Assassin and her protector. The assassin was scaring her, yet her feelings for the squared chin man that was her protector right now, also really scared her. That was a different scary than the first one was. She sighed, as her yearning for the man was far and above normal, or as she thought.
Sh got herself to stop thinking about either thoughts, as she wanted nothing more than a break at the moment. Beginning to get a tentative handle on it all, Robin finally made herself escape back into the world that was in her book. For now, leaving things that were scary behind.
