Chapter 1of The Moon's Tears: Allies And The Caged Bird's Lullaby

Weeks, months and years had melted into one another like snow did once spring came around. She had vaguely no idea how much time had gone by, she'd lost track of days long ago. Although, she did know that not too much time had gone by, just enough.

She was still somewhat small for a wolf due to the fact that she wasn't an adult yet, but close to it. Her khaki wolf's hair had changed from a dark khaki to a very light tan color, her eyes had become more golden and she was very slender. Her tail was now bushier and her ears had seemed to become more pointed than most other wolves. She was displeased though, with a strange tattoo marking just diagonally below her left eye. She had faintly noticed it when she was little, but overtime, it seemed to have darkened from a small outline to a bold crimson color. Khota knew it was an odd marking and obviously that other wolves did not have such things , but after a while she didn't really care about it anymore. It was always going to be there and there was nothing she could do.

Even though time had gone by, she hadn't been alone. She soon found herself accompanied by three older, but not too much older than herself, wolves. Two males and one female.

Aki, who was the eldest, was the other female wolf. She was also the unofficial leader of their 'pack' and was the most mature and rational. Aki was a dark silver color with a black tipped tail as well as her paws and ears. Her eyes were a bright yellow with a taint of red in them which were also very sharp, she could see things from a very far distance which the others could not. In her human form she had wavy black hair that went down to her collarbone with two gold ear piercing in each ear and emerald green eyes. She was attired in a white tank top with a black hooded vest and a green pedal pushers plus pink tennis shoes.

Baku, the second eldest and a male was kind of a rebel. He always questioned Aki's authority over the group and took pride in his horrible hunting and tracking skills (he was also occasionally cowardly at times as well). Baku was a solid mouse brown color with very pale blue eyes that often looked glazed over and gave off a sort of haunting look. When he appeared in his human form he was three inches taller than Aki with dark, military cut brown hair and the same pale blue eyes. He wore regular black shoes, baggy dark denim jeans and had a blue and black stripped long sleeved rugby shirt on.

Rayne, who was only a few months older than Khota was the most fierce one of the 'pack'. His fighting skills were superb and his hunting tactics were excellent also. Rayne had black fur with a dark gray chest and a scar over his right eye. Out of all of them, he seemed to be the most independent and could think fast on his feet which often was the reason Aki respected his decisions. He was also very protective over everyone to the point of sheer annoyance. As a human he had short spiky black hair, his right eye was green and his left was brown with the scar still present over it. Rayne also wore loose green cargo shorts, a white short sleeved collared t-shirt with brown skating shoes. He was around the same height as Baku though and sometimes teased Aki about being shorter than himself and Baku would be more than delighted to join in on the teasing.

Khota's human form had changed slightly, she still had reddish eyes long amber hair ,but now it reached past her waist and she let flow freely behind herself. Her outfit had changed from a raincoat and jeans to a black tank top with a turtle neck, a short black miniskirt and high laced black army boots that went up to her knees (she still wore the locket around her neck but tucked it into her tank top to keep everyone from seeing it). She was also short, about eight inches shorter than Baku and Rayne and five inches shorter than Aki.

When she first met the three other wolves, she was nervous because it had been the first time she had met any other wolves other than her brother, so her social skills left a lot to be desired and that included her conversational skills.

She remembered the day she met them quite a awhile ago…

Khota ran down the street as fast as she could with two police officers chasing behind her, "STOP WOLF!" the called out now taking out their guns and began firing at her.

She looked over her shoulder and dodged the bullets swiftly then darted into an alleyway only to be caught another police officer. He locked his arm around her neck and his other around her waist as she twisted herself trying to break free of his grip. She finally maneuvered herself into a position to bite him and so she did. The police screamed in pain as her fangs sank down into his tender skin with blood spattering everywhere and made him let go of her.

She ran away until to be confronted by more police with guns then she felt someone pick her up the scruff of her rock and run off with the officers chasing after them. She looked up to see silver colored wolf with some black patches of fur saving her from the humans.

Finally, the wolf turned ran into an abandoned house and let go of her neck.

"You're a wolf too-" Khota whispered before the older wolf covered her mouth with her hand.

"Quiet." the wolf murmured hardly audible.

Khota complied as she heard the clacking up shoes scamper around outside that belonged to the people looking for her.

When the shoes footsteps died down the elder wolf looked at her and took on the form of a teenage human girl, "You should be more careful, it's dangerous going around looking like that."

Khota tilted her head to one side that took on her human form and blinked innocently, "Sorry…you are a wolf like me right?"

"Yea, my name's Aki," she replied peering outside to make sure everyone was gone before stepping out and beckoning Khota to follow her, "So where you from anyway kiddo?"

"A city," Khota said , "I don't remember its name all to well, but I remember it wasn't a good place for wolves either." She followed Aki walk down some dismal streets.

"No city is a good place for wolves." Aki said looking the younger wolf over, "What's your name?"

"Khota."

"That's cool, you got any friends or family here?" she asked.

"Not here…" Khota mumbled staring up at the plain gray buildings that cast shadows over them, "I'm not sure where they are right now."

"Well…you can stay with me and my friends until you find them." Aki suggested.

"Really?" Khota said perking up, "Are they wolves too?"

"Of course." Aki said going into another seemingly abandoned house and holding the door open for Khota. "Well, here we are." Aki told Khota, "This is where me, Baku and Rayne live."

"Baku and Rayne?" Khota asked tilting her head to the side curiously. The names sounded odd to her.

"Yea, they're both a bit older than you, but don't worry. They're harmless." Aki chuckled as Khota walked briskly at her heels, trying to keep up with her pace.

************************ ( end of flash back ) ***********************

"So…" Baku said as he put his arms behind his head, "Where we headed today Aki?"

Aki rolled her eyes at the younger wolf and placed her hands on her hips and simply sighed as she kept walking.

Today was a perfect day with blue skies that had clouds off in the distance and it wasn't to hot or too cold.

Baku frowned when she didn't respond, "We have to be going somewhere right?" he persisted.

"I guess," she muttered making a quiet clicking sound with her tongue as she stopped walking.

Rayne ran a hand through his hair and sat down on a rock that was beside the dirt road that they were traveling on as Khota sat down beside him humming a song to herself.

"Let's go to the nearest town and get something to eat?" Aki said, "We'll think about where we're going later once we get something in our stomachs."

Baku shook his head and chuckled softly, "Aki…we are wolves. We hunt, besides, I don't think any of us can stand cooked meat, raw meat is has much more flavor to it."

"We may be wolves but it's dangerous to hunt especially at this time," Aki said in a reasoning voice as Khota and Rayne looked on mildly interested.

"Why?" Baku asked tapping his foot on the ground.

"Haven't you heard?" Rayne piped up which was rare, he was usually a guy of few words, "There are some other wolves running around causing trouble (A/N you can guess who 'those' wolves are ^-^) and the last thing any of us want to do is attract attention to ourselves ."

Aki nodded, "See he agrees, at least some of us posses brains in our heads."

Baku scowled, "So I'm a brainless animal are I?" he nearly shouted

Now she's started it, Khota thought to herself as Rayne shook his head knowing that an argument was about to take place.

A cold smile curled up on Aki's lips, "What else would you be?"

Baku clenched his fists and gave her a menacing look, "Just because you're the oldest doesn't mean you get to be a total complete bitch."

Khota rested her chin on her hands and looked at the ground, "Here they go again…" she whispered to Rayne.

Rayne exhaled heavily and turned to face Khota, "I don't get how something so small escalates into this, do you?"

Khota shrugged half-heartedly and started humming to herself again slightly rocking back and forth where she sat. She often hummed this song because she remembered that someone important to her used to sing it to her very often, it was her personal lullaby. It had a sad tune that could almost bring tears to ones eyes but the words were soft and gentle like a breeze and rolled off the tongue like honey. When the argument began heating up between Aki and Baku, she began singing the lyrics silently to herself to not be overheard,

"I dream of a place within my mind

A place I like to call paradise

Where all my desires dare to come true

And I will always find you

A place where the wind is gentle

Where the grass is always green

And flowers scents fill the air

Someplace with never-ending blue skies

And where I can finally belong

My own sugar coated dream world

And where pain does not exist

Not even suffering or death

Only blissful happiness reigns

In my forsaken paradise…"

"You know…" Rayne said, leaning close to her that she felt his warm breath upon her small ear, once she finished singing, "You have a nice voice."

She winced, "You heard over their racquet?" she hugged her knees and avoided looking at him.

"Yeah," he smirked, "How come you don't sing more often?" he asked as he glanced over to where Aki and Baku were currently brawling at one another than focused his attention back to her.

"I bet most wolves are…" she mumbled to him distantly, wishing that she hadn't sung, his sensitive wolf ears must have overheard her.

"I don't think most wolves are," Rayne answered, "I've never heard a voice quite as crystal clear as yours before. Remember, howling and singing are two different things."

"I guess…" she said quietly as she pretended to become interested in a stray lock of her amber hair and become examining it to see if she had split ends.

"IF YOU DON'T LIKE HOW THINGS ARE DONE THEN LEAVE!" Aki yelled.

"DON'T YOU MEAN HOW YOU DO THINGS?" Baku shouted back loudly glaring at her with the utmost hatred in his eyes.

Rayne got up and went in-between the two quarrelling wolves as if in an effort to stop them before a simple clash of shouting turned into another brutal fight which was nearly the result of their last altercation, "Both of you need to calm down." he stated pushing them away from each other lightly.

Khota fingered the chain of her locket around her neck anxiously as she watched how Rayne was able to get them both to shimmer down and stop yelling. She wondered how he was able to accomplish such a task and she figured in her head that he had found out that reasoning with them both was the key to head off any fights between them. She admired Rayne because the these things that he could do and that she couldn't. He was kind of like the ideal wolf, strong, brave, reasonable, smart etc. In other words, he was everything she wasn't.

Baku sat next to her fuming as she watched that Rayne was talking to Aki calmly, but she didn't want to bother hearing their conversation.

"Thinks she's so great…" Baku huffed under his breath, he sighed and grumbled, "This sucks."

Khota quirked her eyebrows, "What sucks?" than she hastily added, "Besides your dislike for Aki at times."

He took a deep breath, "We shouldn't just be wandering around like common dogs or anything. We should-"

"Be looking for paradise!?" Aki cut him off, "That's so naïve. There's no such place. Get your head out of the clouds and concentrate on reality Baku."

"How do you know?" Baku hissed at her venomously.

"It's just a story for humans," Aki said dismissively, "You know how they like to make things up those humans…anyway, like I said, it's just a stupid myth, a pathetic fairy tale."

"What if it is real?" he questioned standing up.

"If it was real you think we'd all be wasting our time here on this crap hole, if it was real…we'd all be there instead of here." she snapped in a voiced that demanded that be the end of that discussion.

It was obvious in the glint in Baku's eyes that he wanted to pursuit ,but a warning look from Rayne told him to drop it and leave it alone.

Khota jumped onto her feet and forced a smile upon her usually gloomy face, "Let's go then." she chirped in an odd cheery note that sounded very forced, but the others were to preoccupied to notice that she was putting in an effort of being cheery. No one noticed like always, Khota thought drearily as she changed back into a bland and emotionless expression.

The walked down the road in silence towards the next town.

Authoress: Crappy ending of the chapter I know…the Wolf's Rain characters are probably show up in chapter 3 or 4 (RIGHT WHEN THE VIOLENCE STARTS ^o^) Anyways…review or I will cry like a pathetic child. R+R
