Ten Reasons to Love Somebody

II. Possession

Rain flooded down in blinding sheets over Tokyo. The sun should have been setting, but the clouds had grown thick and dark so that it could have been the dead of night. It was gloomy and grey save for the bolts of lavender that slithered through the sky, chased by a crack of thunder. But worst of all was the wind, which threatened to devour anyone who wandered in its wrath.

It was the kind of evening that most were conditioned to hate, and for Subaru, the weather could not be any more treacherous or inopportune. He had been walking home from an exorcism when the clouds that had amassed over him thundered ominously. He was already weak and exhausted from his labors, but when the harsh raindrops whipped down and the ruthless wind bit at him, he found himself in danger of losing what remained of his drifting consciousness.

He must have been a pathetic sight for anyone else caught outside. His clothes were soaked and clung against his wasted frame. He was shivering violently as barrage after barrage of freezing water thrashed past him. He did not know where he was, or where he was going as he aimlessly trudged onward, half-hoping that in the state he had fallen to, the storm would mercifully swallow him in one fatal stroke.

Another onslaught of thunder boomed, ushering an even heavier downpour, but to Subaru's astonishment, he no longer felt the cold sting of the rain. He looked up in confusion, and found a black umbrella and its owner hovering over him.

“Hello, Subaru-kun,” a rich voice hummed through the rain-soaked air.

He blinked once, and then again, hoping to no avail that the other man was a mere illusion in the haze of the storm. “Seishirou-san,” he replied while cringing inwardly.

“Whatever are you doing out in such horrible weather?”

Subaru glared coldly, realizing that Seishirou had no intention to leave. “What does it matter…you don't care, so why even pretend?”

“Now Subaru-kun,” he chided with a smirk. “There's no need to be resentful about it. It was a harmless question.”

Subaru averted his eyes guiltily, but his voice remained bitter. “Then why are you here, Seishirou-san?” he shot back. “Does the Sakurazukamori have nothing better to do than watch his prey soak in the rain?”

Seishirou closed in on the onmyouji and captured his waist from behind. “Would you really like to know?”

Subaru's breathing went taut, and he quashed down a feeling of nausea at the scent of fresh blood on Seishirou's clothes. “Damn you,” he hissed at a whisper.

“You asked,” he chuckled darkly. “I was surprised to find you in such dreadful conditions and on the other side of town, no less. You wouldn't be lost, now would you?”

Subaru said nothing. If he were more concerned about his wellbeing, he might have admitted his predicament, but the last thing he wanted was Seishirou's help.

“Are you worried, Seishirou-san?” he queried acrimoniously, but let out a sharp gasp when Seishirou's hold on him tightened.

“Would you like that?” As he spoke, his voice was warm and untouched by the icy raindrops that pattered over the umbrella. He exhaled a breath of hot air against Subaru's neck and held back a snicker as the Sumeragi shuddered.

“L-let go of me,” demanded Subaru, but Seishirou's arm did not slacken.

“I'm not sure if I should,” he mused. “You're tired, you're shivering, and your clothes are soaked through. If you continue like this, you will kill yourself, while that pleasure belongs to me.”

“Then kill me, and save me the trouble,” he challenged. Yet the harshness vanished from his tone when he spoke again. “Stop toying with me.”

“Patience,” he whispered into Subaru's ear. “It would hardly be satisfying while you are so weak. Besides, I have a more enticing idea…”

Subaru swallowed hard. “What?” he dared to ask.

“There is a diner nearby. Will you join me?”

If Seishirou had not been holding him so tightly, Subaru might have fallen to the ground.

“Will you, Subaru-kun?” he pressed.

He was caught between waves of relief and surprise at the offer so that he was unsure of how to reply. Yet considering that he was trapped against Seishirou, he doubted that he had much of a choice.

“A-alright.”

Seishirou grinned and released his waist. “Follow me.”

Subaru reluctantly trailed close to him underneath the umbrella to avoid another assault by the freezing rain, although its protection did little in the fury of the downpour.

He squinted ahead, but could only see a misty blur that veiled the area as Seishirou skillfully led him forward. When he abruptly halted, Subaru almost collided into him, but looked past his shoulder to see the glowing `open' sign of the diner.

“They have the best coffee cake here, Subaru-kun. I'm sure you will enjoy it.”

Subaru glowered; it was becoming his automatic response to Seishirou's effusive fussing over him, but it had little effect in slowing his advances. Seishirou closed the umbrella, slung an arm over Subaru's shoulders, and pushed open the door before the Sumeragi could protest.

Subaru was squirming angrily in his arms while trying to suppress a pink blush from rising to his cheeks. A waitress waved at them from the counter. “Sakurazuka-san! What are you doing out in this rain!” she cried.

“Business, I'm afraid,” he replied amiably. Subaru shot daggers at him, but shivered as Seishirou's arm slid lower to rest over his hips.

“Oh, I see you brought a guest here tonight.” She said the word `guest' insinuating much more between them. A shade of crimson crept to Subaru's face.

He wanted to throw himself back out into the storm and hope for lightning to strike him. Of all the times he had to blush, why then? The waitress and patrons sitting nearby watched as Seishirou regarded him with that smug look, thereby making the situation worse. And then, he felt the hand around his hip sinking lower.
With an indignant snarl, Subaru swatted it away and broke free from his arm.

Seishirou snickered while Subaru glared with humiliated fury. The waitress found the skirmish amusing. “I think he's rather cute for you, Sakurazuka-san. Go ahead and choose any table you like, and I'll get to you right away.”

“After you,” said Seishirou to the flustered onmyouji.

Avoiding his gaze, Subaru hurried past him and picked the farthest table away from the front counter and the curious stares of the surrounding customers. He sunk into a seat in the corner, but immediately regretted his choice. Seishirou slid right next to him, effectively trapping his prey against the wall. Subaru wanted to groan. Matters did not improve when the waitress came to the table.

“I'll have a large coffee and an order of coffee cake. And what would you like, Subaru-kun?”

His voice was still shaking in his attempt to calm himself down. “I-I'll just have green tea.”

Seishirou scrutinized him before turning back to the waitress. “No he won't. Subaru-kun will have hot chocolate, coffee cake, and what else do you have in the bakery?”

“Seishirou-san,” hissed Subaru under his breath.

But Seishirou continued ordering despite all his protesting. When the waitress walked away, Subaru found himself condemned to a complete banquet of sweets.

“Why did you do that!?” he growled. “I said I only wanted tea.”

“But what you want and what you need is not the same thing.” He leaned closer. “I could feel your ribs through your clothes. Someone has to take care of you.”

“I don't need you to look after me.”

“At the rate you're going, you're going to fall ill, Subaru-kun. It's inevitable.”

Subaru felt his blood simmering. “And you think you can make me do whatever you want with my body!? Do you take some kind of twisted amusement in playing with me? Quit pretending that you care, Seishirou-san; you made it quite clear nine years ago that you don't!”

The instant as he delivered that last, scathing sentence, violet light engulfed the small diner. Almost simultaneously, an ear-splitting crack roared over them. Then as swiftly as it had come, the light snuffed itself out, and the room was left in darkness and the splattering of raindrops.

The room plunged into chaos following the blackout, but Subaru ignored all of it, wincing instead as a constricting grip held his arm with nearly enough force to shatter the fragile bones.

“I believe that I am well within my rights to decide what is best for you. You are mine, Subaru-kun. Never forget that you belong to me.” He spoke evenly, but almost with desperation intertwined in his harsh words.

“So I'm merely your property!?” exclaimed Subaru.

“My marked possession,” he replied, and his free hand roamed back over Subaru's waist and squeezed.

Subaru bit back a squeak, and sent him a withering glare that could melt flesh. “T-take…your hands…off me!”

“And what will you do if I refuse, Subaru-kun?”

Already, Subaru's palm was flying through the air to smack the Sakurazukamori, but it was caught before reaching its target. With both hands now trapped, Subaru fiercely struggled against his captor.

Seishirou scoffed over him. “You might want to be a little more original.”

“Let me go!!” he shouted back, hoping that his voice might carry through the diner so that someone might interfere. He silenced, however, when Seishirou pinned his wrists together against the wall with one hand. With enough force to tell Subaru to behave, he gripped that delicate chin. Emerald eyes blazed at him helplessly, and Seishirou grinned at noting how swiftly the Sumeragi's heart was pounding as he edged closer.

He ran his fingers over the pale skin just below Subaru's warm-pink lips before fully caressing the side of his face. Subaru shivered against the touch, but he indifferently continued. “So soft,” he murmured, more to himself than to his prey.

A finger lazily trailed at a flushed lip, and brushed it lightly to tickle the sensitive flesh. Subaru parted his lips at this, and Seishirou ran a second finger over them when a jolt of pain made him recoil. His finger was bleeding. The onmyouji had bitten him—hard.

Subaru seized the opportunity to kick him square in the stomach before he could react. Seishirou fell back, and he slipped underneath the table. He crawled for freedom, but in those precious seconds, Seishirou had recovered from the attack to snatch his arm and roughly pull the Sumeragi against his lap.

“That wasn't very nice of you, Subaru-kun.”

Before Subaru could answer, the lights rushed back on, and the waitress was hurrying over to them. “Sakurazuka-san! I heard yelling, is everything al—” She abruptly fell short of words at seeing Subaru under the table, between Seishirou's legs. Immediately the wrong idea came to her, and she turned away, flushed. “O-oh my!”

Subaru's face went burgundy, and he tried to stutter anything to convince her that they had done nothing, but the words were tangled in his throat. What horrified him even more was that Seishirou was no longer holding his arm, but looking down at him with an arched eyebrow as if he were the guilty one while his hazel eye shined with amusement.

Subaru found that he was trembling, and he staggered away from Seishirou, hitting against his head in the process. The moment that he could stand, he sprinted past the waitress and the shaken customers with his face hidden in shame. He hurled himself out the door and into the rain, and was grateful to disappear in the cold mist.

Seishirou innocently smiled at the waitress. “Cancel that last order if you don't mind. And I'd appreciate it if you would bring something cold to drink,” he added with a wink.

The waitress could say nothing, and hurried away from him with a traumatized nod.
