Chapter 7

 

Watanuki woke flailing, shrieking the name, “Shizuka!” only to be greeted by a sad look on Yuuko's face.

 

“I told him he wasn't prepared.”

 

“Where is he? Is he okay? Were you able to heal him?” Watanuki was completely disregarding his state of undress to grasp Yuuko by the lapels of her coat.

 

She sighed. “He was never injured. The demon used your thoughts against you and cast an illusion to cause you the most misery he could. Your pain was his ecstasy.”

 

He sat back, breathing a sigh of relief, “So he's okay, then.”

 

Yuuko shook her head. “No. No he's not.” Her maroon eyes fastened on him as she continued. “He left you here to be healed and would not wait long enough for me to tell him that your injuries were merely from you reacting against your own vision. He is right now back at the shrine.” She looked him up and down. “If you care about him at all, you'll need to run. Faster than if that demon was back and chasing you.” She thrust a cheap yukata at him and he nodded, throwing it on and cinching it closed. Then he began running. Barefoot and determined, he ran as if it were all there was left in the world.

 

“Hurry, Watanuki,” Yuuko whispered.
