DISC: I do not own xxxHolic or any of the characters. These belong to Clamp - those crazy mangaka who make us all practically faint for the shonen-ai and then YANK it out from under us. Clamp, if I can have one request, it's to give us some DouWata love by the end of this series! PLEASE!
Chapter 8
After arriving back home at the shrine, Doumeki entered the kura. He had bathed thoroughly and donned white robes. There was no way for him to be fed his favorite meal, that would mean involving Watanuki and he would never bother him again.
The bow, which had belonged to his grandfather, was laid in front of him.
Kneeling, the defeated archer paused to take a deep breath. He would never fail the seer again. Because the seer would never be misled enough to believe, to trust in Doumeki's capabilities. Maybe as a spirit he could accomplish what he could not in life.
No. Watanuki could see spirits. He'd never bother the seer with his presence again.
Using his brush, he carefully penned the following on parchment:
I close my eyes now,
Ever seeing blue eyes of
The one I have loved.
Forgive me, Kimihiro.
I will not fail you in death.
No one knew he was here in the kura. He could perform the jumonji giri without fear of interruption.
This was the only way.
Taking a deep breath, he whispered, “Kimihiro, forgive me,” as he opened his robe to expose his skin to the blade. He then pulled the tanto out of his sheath, holding it several inches away from his belly. On the next intake of breath, he moved it out two more inches then prepared to thrust it in, the first of the two strokes that would end his life and his shame.
AN: From Wikipedia - “In time, committing seppuku came to involve a detailed ritual. This was usually performed in front of spectators if it was a planned seppuku, not one performed on a battlefield. A samurai was bathed, dressed in white robes, and fed his favorite meal. When he was finished, his instrument was placed on his plate. Dressed ceremonially, with his sword placed in front of him and sometimes seated on special cloths, the warrior would prepare for death by writing a death poem….
”Some samurai chose to perform a considerably more taxing form of seppuku known as jÅ«monji giri ("cross-shaped cut"), in which there is no kaishakunin (second) to put a quick end to the samurai's suffering. It involves a second and more painful vertical cut on the belly. A samurai performing jumonji giri was expected to bear his suffering quietly until perishing from loss of blood, passing away with his hands over his face.”
