Chapter 4

By Sapadu

“So, Tatsumi-san, here's your report! And we actually got it all done in a week! Waddya have to say to THAT?” Tsuzuki smirked, dropping a stack of paperwork on the secretary's desk. Tatsumi's eyebrow twitched.

“For one thing, Tsuzuki-san, it was mostly our new addition doing the work. For another thing, missions have been completed in less than a week. Now, Tsuzuki-san, Kurosaki-kun, I would like to have a private word with Phastine-san.”

Hearing this, Samantha practically crushed her cup of hot chocolate, but continued drinking as though her hands had never twitched. Hisoka raised an eyebrow at her, but he and Tsuzuki stepped outside of Tatsumi's office.

Sammy glanced at the door and back at Tatsumi, looking, quite plainly, terrified.

“What is it?” She asked, as Juouchou's secretary shuffled papers on his desk.

“Phastine-san...” Tatsumi began, but Samantha sighed and rolled her eyes.

“You don't HAVE to call me that.” She said, grouchily. Tatsumi raised an eyebrow and adjusted his glasses- something that was making Samantha wonder if it was just obsessive-compulsive behavior, or a sign of irritation.

“What would you suggest, then?” He asked. Samantha gulped, but managed an answer.

“One of the girls at school suggested 'Sapadu-san'.” She finally replied. Tatsumi stared at her for a long moment, as though considering her sanity, before he returned to his original intent.

“Sapadu-san... I would like to know, in detail, how you came about your knowledge of the shinigami and the Death Note, to the extent that you have.” He asked Samantha. A smile came to her face, albeit a bit stiffly.

“I know an information broker who specializes in information about demons and supernatural dealings. She told me everything there is to know about these creatures- and I usually go to her when I need information about other things.” Sammy replied, a hint of pride seeping into her voice. Tatsumi raised an eyebrow.

“Then, I assume you learned the methods of dealing with shinigami from this broker. Correct?” Samantha's smile didn't waver.

“Yes.”

“I see... Then, I have one final question: The manner in which you DEALT with the shinigami is something I would like to have demonstrated.” Tatsumi asked. Samantha stared at him for a long moment before replying,

“...That's not possible.” And she left, blasting past Hisoka and Tsuzuki, who had been waiting outside for her to come out.

Tatsumi stayed seated at his desk, dazed and shocked. NEVER had a citizen of Juouchou talked back to him, before...

What nobody realized, was that it was Samantha's first time talking back to a man like Tatsumi.

::I'm not here now. Leave a message.::

Subaru continued to stare at his answering machine- Imonoyama-san had been kind to offer him to live with the other seals, but it had been a highly impractical offer.

He only brought misery to those around him.

Subaru-san, I'm just calling to be sure that you completed the request from the Haninozuka family- it was an important request...”

The voice of his grandmother drifted into his apartment, echoing off the empty walls.

Subaru lit a cigarette and started to smoke.

How is your search for the Sakurazukamori coming? I haven't heard anything from you about that, so it concerns me sometimes...”

Maybe he should restrict how long of messages people could leave on his machine...

It was the third time she'd left a message like this on his machine.

...Subaru-san, please pick up... I know you're there...”

If she'd said it in any other tone of voice- an exasperated one or like a mother fondly saying 'I know you're not sleeping' when their child was trying to fake illness- it would have been amusing.

But it wasn't.

...Well, when you're ready to talk, please call me back... but you have to remember you still have a life to live... and there are people who want you to keep living.”

Beeeeeeeeeeeep

Subaru finished his cigarette, and, almost as though on cue, there was a knock on his door.

“It's unlocked.” He called. There was a pause, before the door opened and soft footsteps made their way in.

Subaru looked up and saw Kamui staring at him with a mostly expressionless face.

“...It's dangerous to leave your apartment unlocked, even if you're here...” He said, as though repeating something Sorata had told him to pass along. Subaru blinked.

“I don't have anything that's worth stealing- it's no trouble.” Subaru explained. Kamui's face shifted to a pained expression, then he looked away.

“...I'm not bothering you, am I?”

Subaru blinked up at Kamui for a moment, before allowing himself a small smile.

“No. No you're not.”
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
“Ano... Tohru-san...” Samantha asked as they gathered their books. Tohru turned and smiled at the new classmate, whom was shyly avoiding eye contact.
“Hai, Sapadu-san?” She asked, smiling. Samantha didn't look up as she spoke.
“...I was wondering... do you know of any apartments for rent in the area?” She asked. Tohru tilted her head with curiosity, before Samantha explained.
“I don't have a place to stay for the moment... so I was wondering... if you knew of any places I could go to...”
The announcement that Samantha was, essentially, homeless, immediately made Tohru gape.
“Sapadu-san... if you don't have a place to live right now, where are you staying?” She asked, feeling sincere empathy, given that she'd lived in a tent for a while, herself. Samantha looked down, before she blushed.
“...Well... actually, all week... I've really just been wandering around... and not really STAYING anywhere... so that's why I was asking if...”
Momiji interrupted and jumped on top of Samantha's shoulders.
“Ehhh? Sapu-chan's living on the streets?” He asked, eyes wide. Samantha went even redder, as Momiji was really announcing it to the world- the last thing that she wanted.
“Sapadu-san, maybe you could stay over night- I'm sure Shigure-san wouldn't mind... and maybe I could help you find a place over dinner or something...” Tohru offered.
“HA-AH?” Samantha asked as Momiji jumped from her shoulders and started tugging her by her arm out the door.
Sammy didn't get a chance to protest that she had work, as nobody noticed a very irate Tatsumi following them in their shadows.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

“Sapadu-san, would you care to stay for dinner?” Tohru asked as Samantha toed off her shoes. Samantha looked up and her purple eyes met Tohru's. Tohru could sense Yuki and Kyou on either side of her tense up.

Samantha shifted, uncomfortably.

“...I'd like to... but I do have to get to work...” She said, shyly. Tohru blinked, as the news that Samantha was working was new to her.

“Oh... in that case, maybe someone should walk with you to make sure you reach your job safely. Or... could you tell us where you work so that I could come and get you when you're done?” Tohru asked, while Samantha seemed to shrink, looking away.

“...Um...”

Kyou put a hand on Tohru's forehead, putting his own shoes back on.

“I'll walk her over- you stay here and get your homework done, since we've got that test on Thursday.” He said, refusing to let Tohru go any further with this. She protested.

“D-D-Demo... Kyou-kun, I couldn't ask you to...” She stammered and Kyou rolled his eyes.

“You're not asking me- I'm volunteering.” He replied, while Samantha looked nervously between them, before saying,

“U-um... I can't...” She finally managed, and both Kyou and Tohru gave her a puzzled look, “...I'm sorry, but I don't think anybody can come with me to where I work... it's um... not a place where... we generally see... people...”

Samantha was stumbling over her words, as though trying to find an excuse, which made Tohru even more curious and Kyou even more suspicious, before someone knocked on the door.

“Ah... Hai?” Tohru skittered forward to open it. Outside stood a man, about Shigure's height, except he was completely unlike Shigure in demeanor- he wore a dark, pressed suit and glasses, while his face was sharp and cold.

“Sapadu-san...” He began, his voice harsh, “Why did you not report to work immediately after school hours?” The man demanded. Samantha laughed, nervously, while Tohru immediately held up her hands.

“A-Ano... it's just that... Sapadu-san needs a place to stay... I was just offering her to stay for din-”

The man's glare intensified. Tohru fell silent, though it was somewhat comical.

“Ano... Honda-senpai... I'll be back after work... but for now, I really do need to get to work...” Samantha finally interjected, setting down her briefcase and leaving the house with the man leading her.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Samantha had finished for the night and was yawning enough to split her face in half as she walked back to the Sohma house. Pushing paperwork was no fun, especially this late at night.
She heard Solar-san snicker in lazy satisfaction.
'Shut up.'
'There's a shortcut through the park, if you want to get back quickly.' Solar-san informed her, as though to say 'So there'.
Samantha rolled her eyes and quickly darted through the bushes, making a beeline for the park, her feet already aching from the long trek. At least going through the park would have grass as opposed to the harsh pavement of the sidewalk...
Samantha closed her eyes and sleepwalked through the park before she stopped for a moment to look around and see where she was. When she opened her eyes, however, the park was completely pitch black- even considering that it was a full moon.
'Something's not right...' Solar-san murmured. Samantha paused, eyes sliding back, as though she'd see the owner of the voice over her shoulder.
'...You mean you gave me wrong directions...' Samantha snarled. The Solar made a noise that signaled something to the negative.
'No.... the place is correct... but something's not right...'
Samantha made a face, even though the Solar couldn't see it, but stepped cautiously, as though on a mine field. It was still practically too dark to see, and Samantha had the distinct impression that she was going towards something very much like a moth would go towards a flame. It wasn't a particularly unique simile, nor was it one that made her comfortable, but it was the best for the situation.
A glowing, pink, sakura petal drifted past Samantha's face and she turned to be met, face to face with a pair of mismatched eyes. One was white, the other was gold.
And there was blood splattered mostly everywhere.
“It's not everyday that one meets a shinigami...” The man said.
Samantha cursed, mentally- not only was this guy a killer, but he had her pegged with just one look...
Which... possibly meant...
“It's not everyday that a shinigami would meet the Sakurazukamori... Sakurazuka Seishirou-san.”
Seishirou smiled, then pulled an ofuda out of his pocket.
'The body of Samantha Phastine is located beyond Sakurazuka Seishirou's reach.'
Samantha found herself on the ground, staring up at the door to the house of Sohma Shigure. She blinked for a moment, eye twitching, before she screamed.
“GODDAMMIT, SOLAR! DON'T DO THAT!”
The door slid open and Samantha found herself staring at Tohru, who was looking very confused.
“...Sapadu-san... who were you yelling at?”
Samantha blinked, then curled up into a ball, cursing that the Solar didn't have a body of her own for Samantha to beat the ever loving shit out of, while Tohru looked on, very, very puzzled.
A/N: Read people... read, dammit...
And don't take it for face value- things will change as the story progresses.
