Chapter Three:The Choice
It has been a couple of days since Hisoka told Tsuzuki everything and Hisoka has no help with Muraki. Tatsumi told him that he will see what he can do, but not to give up his hopes. Now, Hisoka is sitting in his office chair staring out in space while wondering what he can do for Tsuzuki. Tsuzuki hasn't said a word to any of them for these past two days and it worries Hisoka. He doesn't want to lose Tsuzuki. Tsuzuki is his family and he has to find a way to keep it that way. Hearing the door open and shut, Hisoka turns to stare at tired purple eyes and asks, "What's up, Tsuzuki?"
Tsuzuki takes a seat in the office chair while putting his legs up on the desk. He doesn't know what to tell Hisoka. Tsuzuki has been dreaming about Muraki and it is taking its toll on him. He never knew how something like love could be so painful. It was cold outside and it brought back his past when he tried over and over to end it all. Shaking his head, Tsuzuki replies, "Dreams." It has been this way for two days now and Tsuzuki doesn't want to worry everyone, but he can see the concern in their eyes. All he wishes is to see the eyes of Muraki but is afraid to voice it to the department. Hearing the door bust open, he turns to observe his friend, Watari standing there with a smile on his face. Tsuzuki knows that Watari does the same thing he does himself. He hinds behind a mask to prevent anyone questioning him.
Hisoka looks between Tsuzuki and Watari while hoping that Watari can bring the smile to Tsuzuki's face. He knows that Tsuzuki will not have that smile again unless Muraki is here. It pisses him off to no end that he can't do a damn thing to help Tsuzuki. Standing up, Hisoka walks to the door and tells, "I'm going to see, Mr. Tatsumi." Before he walks out the door, Watari grabs his arm. Hisoka turns to the man and asks, "What?"
Watari shakes his head and whispers, "Tatsumi went to see the Lord of Hades today. He told me to keep Tsuzuki's mind off of things for a while." Hisoka nods to him and walks out to play that he is still going to see Tatsumi. Watari drops the smile and takes a seat in the empty chair and asks with concern in his voice, "Are you all right, Tsuzuki?" Tsuzuki shakes his head but says nothing. Watari can only image what Tsuzuki is going through. Watari knows how it feels to love someone but not to voice it. The only difference between them is that Watari still has a chance to state his feelings. Tsuzuki told Muraki right before he died and Tsuzuki is left alone with the pain of someone who could have been there for him. Watari leans against the chair while resorting, "I know it's hard for you, Tsuzuki, but please remember your friends are here when you need someone to talk to."
Tsuzuki looks at the ceiling and closes his eyes to let the tears slide down his face. He doesn't even understand what he is feeling. The man who he swore to hate, turn out to be love. Muraki was the only one to know his past, but never turn away from him. Would Watari been the same? Would everyone in the department stay by his side if they knew the truth? It takes Tsuzuki a few minutes to find the right words, "Watari, I have to deal with this on my own." Watari gives him a dirty look but Tsuzuki shakes his head. He made up his mind that night with Hisoka. He has no choice but to do this alone. They might say they understand, but they have no idea what is going through his broken heart. Muraki is dead because of him. He killed the same man that he confessed his love for. The same man who was glad to die. Tsuzuki knows how that feels, but never took true freedom. Muraki is different in that way. Death was freedom to Muraki and he would never want an immortal life just to stay by Tsuzuki's side.
Tatsumi walks in to see Watari staring at Tsuzuki with worry and anger in his eyes. It makes Tatsumi wonder what happened between them. It has been awhile since Watari had that look in those golden eyes. Tatsumi clears his throat and replies, "Tsuzuki, I like to talk to you in private." He watches as Watari stands up and walks out without saying a word to either of them. Now, Tatsumi knows that something horrible happened between them. Watari will always put a smile upon his face to hind his emotions, but he walked out with no smile that makes his face light up. Tatsumi leans against the wall and watches the one he so loves mourn for Muraki's death. It is hard for him to see Tsuzuki in such a state over that crazy bastard that almost took Tsuzuki away from them all. He finally speaks, "Tsuzuki, you cannot keep doing this to yourself." Tsuzuki stands up and walks out of the office with sadness and guilt written on his face clearly. It makes Tatsumi mourn for his friend. He doesn't know what to do now. The Lord of Hades told him that he will make his decision soon and the final decision would be up to Muraki. Does Muraki really mean what he said to Tsuzuki that night or is this the last way to break Tsuzuki for good? Tatsumi hates to admit that he has no idea what to do next. It was never his style to take a seat in the back and wait for the events to unfold.
Tsuzuki walks through the path of the cherry blossoms and watches them fall to the ground. It remains him of all the people he killed. His friends don't realize that he is no better than Muraki. He knows how it feels to desire revenge. He felt that when he was alive. It has been to long since he visited her. Teleporting to the mortal world, he walks through the grave yard to find her laying place. No matter how long it has been, he can still find it. The place where he laid his beloved sister, Ruka. He kneels down in front of the grave stone and whispers with sadness lace his voice, "My dear sister, Ruka. I couldn't keep my promise to you and now I live with the sins of my past. Please help me." It has been so long since he kneeled before this grave with sadness in his eyes. He was sure after Kyoto that his life would be filled with happiness, but he guessed wrong. The lies that past through the department, the false smiles, and the false illusion that his friends would truly not understand is leaving Tsuzuki out of ideas. "Well, there is one way. The only way I can think of. Sorry Tatsumi. Sorry Watari. I'm so sorry, Soka," Tsuzuki thinks to himself. He is ready to call upon Touda once again, but stops when he hears soft footsteps. Tsuzuki refuses to hurt anyone for his selfish reasons. Standing up, Tsuzuki thinks out loud, "I guess I'm not meant to die."
Muraki stands there and sees the same look on Tsuzuki's face that he had when they were in the lab. The sadness that he feels for this man, Muraki doesn't understand. When the Lord of Hades asked him about working for him, Muraki was going to deny the offer but the Lord spoke of Tsuzuki. He could not give himself peace when he knew his beloved was dying slowly once again. Walking through the grave, Muraki sees Tsuzuki kneeling in front of the grave stone. He can sense the pain and he knows Tsuzuki is ready to give up his life. He speaks up after hearing Tsuzuki's words, "No, my dear guardian of death. You are not meant to die as I am not meant to die." Tsuzuki turns around to stare widen eyes at him and Muraki gives a gentle smile. It starts to rain like the heavens are cursing them for being there and trying to wash away their sins. Muraki walks to Tsuzuki and resorts, "It has been too long, Mr. Tsuzuki." Tsuzuki runs to him and hugs him like Muraki would disappear before his eyes if he were to let go. Muraki wraps his arms around the shivering body that he finds comfort in. He doesn't understand why he would feel this way. Looking up at the sky to let the rain hit his face, Muraki mumbles, "Let's go, Asato. You and I hate the rain." They walk away from Ruka Tsuzuki's grave stone and the sun shines through the clouds at the same spot those two were standing. The heavens might curse their beings, but Muraki and Tsuzuki walk through the grave yard in hand and hand.
