CHAPTER 5: The Zoidian

Lieutenant Commander Thomas Richard Schubaltz exited the cockpit of his Dibison to be greeted by Major O'Connell, an old friend of Rob Herman, the late pilot of the King Gojulas.

"Hey, Thomas.

Major O'Connell. What, may I ask, do you need me for?

At ease, Lt Schubaltz. General Ford asked for you specifically." He seemed to hesitate. "It's about the Zaber Fang.

WHAT? No way! He's attacked another base?

Yes, and the Commission seems to think he's from one of our government. We've got some Sleeper tapes, from Cronos, the latest target."

The tape seemed blurred, explosions were all over. And it seemed like just one Zoid: Dark red, very much like a Saber Tiger, but so much more nimble, more agile. And faster it seemed. Then, amid the jagged breaks of the base's structure, Thomas saw something.

"Freeze it!" The footage stopped. "Go back a bit, in slow motion. There. Zoom in on that spot, there." The image revealed a smooth, reptilian surface. As the sergeant at the keyboard cleared up the image, it was revealed to be jet-black, with a short, sharp blade on its tail, with similar ones on its elbows and heels. It seemed perfectly smooth, with 4 spikes arching gracefully backwards from the head, and narrow, blue eyes.

"Son of a…An Organoid." Whispered Major O'Connell. "So it's true.

Yes, and whatever it is, it's been a royal pain in the ass for the past year.

But who…? How did it survive?

Stasis. Cryogenic suspension. It's unbelievable." As the footage continued, the Organoid ran by, and the Zaber Fang pounced. The footage ended. Then, a young captain entered. "Sir! We've found a pilot, in a Backdraft Helcat. She's being escorted to the containment block as we speak.

Good. Lt Schubaltz and I will interrogate her. You may return to your duties, Captain Ryou.

Yes, sir!" and the platinum blonde youth left. Thomas and the Major went to the container block. She had blue hair, and wore a Backdraft pilot's uniform. Suddenly, she awoke, and her deep blue eyes settled on Thomas. He shivered as she smiled mischievously. Somehow, this attractive girl reminded him of the Black Organoid, and its pilot, and he figured it could've been her.

'No. I doubt it.' He thought. He failed to notice a minute, blue scarab climb out the window, though the girl smiled again. That smile was unnerving. "Do you know who we are?

Lieutenant Commander Thomas Richard Schubaltz III, tactical counselor to Emperor Rudolf. And Major Richard O'Connell, Imperial Military Western Command, executive officer to General Krueger." She grinned again. A few miles away, a Zoid stirred into awakening, and took to the air, headed straight for Mt Osa.

"All right then. What were…

Fleeing" she interrupted. "Fleeing from the Backdraft Organization." Thomas smiled as she used the Commission's old name. "Trying to get back to my Zoid, with which I'd have stood a chance, against 150 Demantis units.

150? No way!" came Thomas. O'Connell continued. "All right. Now, what's your name?

Reese. I'm a mercenary." She lied, obviously. But Major O'Connell let it slide. "OK Reese, we're gonna take some blood samples, and then you'll be escorted to a room. Your bag is already there." She didn't even blink when the 2-inch adamantium needle pierced a microscopic hole in the blood vessel near her elbow. They put a bandage on her, and before long, she was flopped down on the first bed she'd been in since her capture.

Two days later, Doctor Kamiya walked in with the results. "Sir, there's something very peculiar about that girl.

What is it?

Well, take a look: you see these cells here? They're not present in other human records. In fact, the only even remotely similar record dates back hundreds of years, to a certain Fiona Flyheit.

So, what's so weird?

You'd better sit down, sir." O'Connell sat in his chair, and the doctor continued "This Fiona was, and this was confirmed by my opposite number in Guygalos, a known Zoidian!"

"You gotta be shittin' me! You mean we've got a ZOIDIAN in this base? Fuck!" Then, he heard shouts, as a large something landed in the court.

"Ma'am, you're not supposed to be leaving ye..AH!" came a shout, then several screams, as a blue blur took down all soldiers within 25 yards of the Double Sworder. Reese hopped on board, and took off. "Thanks Major! She laughed, and left. The Major stood there, still stunned.

Meanwhile, Raven and Shadow were sleeping, under the shadow of Mt Iselina. The Zaber Fang lay nearby, and his Whale King was close at hand. Then, a blue and red Scorpion-type came up out of the ground, and a red-haired guy in a Backdraft jumpsuit exited the cockpit. Shadow had slipped away, into the brush, ready to mobilize the Zaber at a moment's notice.

"Hey, kid. What're you doing out here? You on the run or something?

Maybe I am. So what're you gonna make of it? The black-haired boy smirked.

"Seen a Double Sworder around here?" came a second voice, from a nearby GunRaptor. Raven's eyes narrowed as he recognized the man who'd murdered his parents. "Hey, you look kinda familiar. Have we met?" asked Zephyr.

"Not a chance. And I haven't seen anything around here." He snapped. Then, he mobilized. Shadow slipped onto the Zaber's back, unnoticed. When the two enemy Zoids vanished, he merged with the dark red Zoid, and started running.

"Hey, Sis! Wait up!" called the boy from his bike. Farther ahead, a similar bike powered through the brush, the girl glancing back. As they came to a clearing, the cute, blonde-haired child stopped, and waited for her brother. After a while, she called his name "Bit? BIT? WHERE ARE YOU? BIT, THIS ISN'T FUNNY!" Meanwhile, the boy called her name. "Maria! I'm here, Sis! Maria, Help!" He suddenly saw a Zoid. HELP! HELP! SOMEBODY! Hel…" his voice trailed, and darkness overtook him…

AAH!" Bit awoke with a scream. He'd been dreaming again. He got up, and found Fiona raiding the fridge. "Those are MY Donuts!

No they're not! They're mine." He snagged one, and grinned. "Not this one." Suddenly, something fell from her pocket. A photograph. A blonde boy, sitting atop a Liger. A Blade Liger, it looked like. The picture's focus was on the boy, but in the foreground, an attractive blonde girl, about 13 yrs old, with sparkling black eyes. Bit gasped, and clutched at his breast. The photo was still there, in his pocket. There was an awkward silence, then Fiona whispered "That's my mom, and my uncle. He's dead.

Was her name Maria?

Yes, how'd you know?" she gasped as he pulled out an almost identical photograph, bearing her mother's signature. She turned her picture over, and it said "BIT" in childish scribbles.

"Holy Shit!" she dropped her food and hugged him. Her mother had told her about her brother, supposedly killed many years before "Uncle Bit…Where've you been?"

Looking for my past, Fiona. Looking for my past, and thanks to you, I finally found it." They'd reached her room. Bit tucked in his niece, and kissed her forehead.

"Good night Fiona."

"Good night Uncle Bit."
