CHAPTER 15: Ultimate Power

Today, the Guardian Team was returning after a 3-week hiatus. Rumor had it that Raven had a new Liger. Bit didn't think so, but he was at the forefront when the single Zoid mobilized. He was worried about his Liger, because this morning, the Zoid had entered a kind of trance, which Jamie called "pre-evolutionary stasis". Bit thought that sounded worrying, but promising. He waited impatiently for the golden cocoon to fall. Doc was giggling, looking and sounding for all the world like a giddy schoolboy. Leena was out (…again!), Leon looked on, obviously interested, and Brad looked uninterested, sitting next to his wife. Mike drummed his fingers impatiently, and Jenny was chewing her fingernails. Siege and Night were equally nervous.

<I FEEL A DARK POWER APPROACHING. >

What is it, Siege?

<I FEEL IT ALSO. >

Night?

<IT IS HERE…>" said both Organoids simultaneously.

Doc screamed. Mike and Leon's jaws dropped. Everyone else stared speechlessly. A sleek, black Zoid had shimmered into view. It was a Liger, but unlike anything any of them had ever seen. The slanted ion boosters were tall and slim, with a set of canards in between each. The sleek shoulders were unmistakably Jager's, as was the sleek head armor. But the rest reflected the dark, jagged lines of the Imperium. A double-barreled cannon not unlike a Blade Liger's was visible underneath it, and the Blade Liger's influence was visible in the silver-blue electron blades. The basic Zero could be distinguished in the head as well, and had obviously provided the leg armor. But the whole flowed together beautifully. The entire armor was black as night, with highlights of silver. The joint stabilizers were dark gray, and there were a few hints of gold, notably on the paws and cockpit. The whole thing seemed to flow together so beautifully, that there was no way it could have been man-made.

"The Liger Zero X…."

THE GUARDIAN TEAM VS THE SAND STINGRAYS TEAM. BATTLE MODE 0990. READY, FIGHT!"

Over 100 Sinkers rushed the Liger. A small, black cube on its back opened, revealing a barrel. A black hole formed on the ground, and the Liger vanished through it. The enemy collided, and 12 Sinkers caught fire, put out of commission. On a nearby cliff, a black Liger roared: it was the PANZER!

"What? There isn't a carrier for 50 miles around the battlefield!" roared Doc. It was too late. 98 Sinkers were annihilated, and the judge announced the Guardian Team as the victor. Then, the pilot of the Liger spoke:

"Witness the true power…of an Ultimate X. SHADOW!" the black Organoid jumped from a nearby cliff, and ran after its partner. Both Zoids suddenly disappeared as the judge took off.

"Wow…" Bit was looking at the screen for a whole 10 minutes after the TV was turned off, before getting up, when Moonbay called for lunch.

"How 'bout that Liger, huh?"

The Battle had gone extremely well, Raven thought. Reese thought that he could have done it a bit more imaginatively, but she didn't get it: the point of this battle had been to show the true power of the Ultimate Zero X, not to show off. And to demonstrate his Warp Vortex weapon. (AN: ref. To Yu-Gi-Oh!: Dungeon Dice Monsters.) It had gone perfectly.

"But Raven, the battle only lasted about 5 minutes, even less! And the prize money…

…was worth it. The Battle lasted 3 minutes and 48 seconds. And it was worth it." He gazed into her eyes "Trust me. I'll be going alone in the next battle as well. No, not the face. Stop it." Reese was giving him the "puppy-dog" face. God, he hated it when she did that. "NO."

Specular looked at Shadow, worried about both their partners.

<WHAT DO YOU THINK IS HAPPENING?>

<I DON'T KNOW. BUT I SENSE A LOT OF EMOTIONS EMANATING FROM BOTH. ANGER, CONTEMPT, RESPECT.>

<AFFECTION…>

<YES. IT APPEARS THAT THEY BOTH HAVE STRONG FEELINGS FOR EACH OTHER.>

<BUT THEY KNOW NOT HOW TO EXPRESS THEIR FEELINGS.>

The both sighed as Raven stormed out of the room, and slammed the door behind him. Another door was slammed: the one to his room.

Unknown to his partner, Raven was thinking. He did not know how to express his feelings towards Reese. He'd never felt this way towards anyone. In fact, he had not felt love in almost 14 years. And he loved Reese. He just didn't know. He was just dozing off when Shadow came in, and lay down at the foot of the bed.

"This is gonna be a long night…" then darkness overtook him.

For the first time since his parents' death, he did not dream, that night.

"At last, the ultimate weapon." Hiltz stood on top of the facility. "Soon, my creation will be, at last, complete. Six long years, and now I'm only Six days away from domination on all of Zi.

Do you intend to strike at dawn, sir?

No. We wait until the Hour. Then, we unleash Hell…(AN: Who's seen Gladiator? LOL)

The hour?

Yes, lieutenant." He gazed down at the monstrous creature below him. "We await the Hour of the Beast…"
