Behind the Double Mirrors
Chapter Eight: Killer Queen, Survival through death, Family ties.

{Kaiba's P.o.V.}
That witch Catalina laughed viciously, snapping her fingers before Sesshoumaru crumbled to the ground. Maxine's eyes..her dead eyes..remained locked with mine. My eyes tore away from hers as I glanced back over to Kim. Her chest rose as she took a shaky breath, still unconscious from being thrown against the wall, but alive, thank Ra. Sesshoumaru fell to his knees, looking at his hands. For the first time in all the times I'd laid on the dog-boy's brother, he looked.. softer, kinder. His hands were covered with the blood of Maxine. Of her child.
The child…
Catalina stepped towards the gore-covered fetus. It was so small, so tiny.. about four months old in all technicality, seeing as Maxine had been nearly two and a half months pregnant already when they'd told her at the hospital.
I choked on vomit, a sour taste filling my mouth. It was so small, so delicate. It's eyes..seemed to be screwed up tightly, as if fighting whatever trials it had to face. But it had nothing to face, not yet.. and now not ever.
It was dead.
…she…
She was dead.
“My…niece…” Sesshoumaru whispered hoarsely, as if the idea had just popped into his head. He would have been an uncle.. but now, the blood of this still-born girl covered his hands. No longer possessed, he now knew… it was his blame. Catalina scooped this child, this so very delicate child, into her arms. She held the baby with such care, as if it was her own.
“It should have been mine… InuYasha was mine,” she said quietly.
“I do believe that child should have been Maxine's…” a gruff voice said, from the shadows. I looked over at InuYasha. Vomit covered the front of his shirt, blood smeared across his face where a freshly cut claw mark was bleeding freely. He held his composure as he looked at his daughter. But somehow, even though him and I weren't very good friends, I knew it was killing him inside.
{InuYasha's P.o.V.}
I stepped swiftly to Maxine's side, laying my hand on her stomach, lifting her head gently. Tears stung in my eyes as I met her blank stare. Her blank, dead stare.
“Maxine…” I whispered, swallowing almost as if I were gulping and gasping for air, “Max…do not die on me. I can't lose you. I can't…”
I sobbed softly, lifting her head closer to mine, whispering in her ear now, lifting her delicately in my arms, cradling her.
Catalina chuckled dryly, a hoarse and weak sort of laugh. “You're begging for something that will never come. Life cannot be reborn, InuYasha…” she spoke softly, meeting my gaze as I looked up at her.
“…why, Cat?” I asked softly.
“You know her?!” Kaiba said abruptly, just as Cat was about to answer.
Cat laughed again, her voice still weak..as if she were sad. “Of course he does,” Sesshoumaru replied for me. I looked over at him and he smirked slightly, “He stole her affection from me.” Cat made a small sniffling sound and bowed her head, a small smile on her lips. Suddenly, I saw the half-breed cat demon I'd fallen in love with so very very long ago.. I didn't see the cruel demon who'd turned my life into a hell.
She looked up again, tears now streaming down her face, her smile remaining, “…you broke my heart…” she whispered.
“We were young…” I whispered back.
“Naïve..” Sesshoumaru offered, “…yet I loved you.”
Cat now turned to him, tears still on her face as she mouthed the words, “I'm sorry.”
She bowed her head, looking now in the face of the child cradled in her arms.
My child, my daughter.
Her tears fell on its eyes as she sobbed and stepped towards me. I gently laid Maxine's head down, closing her eyelids with care as Cat knelt beside me. She laid the child gently atop Maxine's open womb, still shaking.
“Bring them back… please, Cat, for me,” I whispered. She sobbed, shaking her head, “Why did you break my heart, InuYasha?! You stood there and told me you couldn't marry me…you wouldn't…” she said softly, turning to look at me, “Why?”
“…Catalina…” Sesshoumaru said softly, “You are now asking my younger brother the same question I wished to ask you nearly 50 years ago.” She turned to look at him, “…I loved you both. But you.. you were so angry. So angry that I could not choose… when I saw your wrath, I ran for InuYasha…” she spoke evenly, calmly, reaching for my older brother's hand.
“Marry me.”
“What?” I breathed, matching Sesshoumaru's voice.
“Marry me… and I'll bring her back,” Cat said shakily, taking her hand away from Sesshoumaru's.
I took the moment to look, not at the woman who'd once been the love of my life, but my older brother who had such a strong and passionate hate for me, and I for him. His eyes found mine and for once in my life, I felt a brotherly bond. We didn't have to speak words. We both knew exactly what must be done.
“It is not a question of if I will marry you, Cat..” I began, as Sesshoumaru smiled slowly, “The question is if you will marry me…”
“…I will…” she breathed.
“Then it is done,” I whispered.
She pressed her palms gently down upon Maxine's open womb, carefully spreading her fingers over the stillborn child. With a fantastic display of blues and indigos, I saw the child seem to sink in and heal. A breath filled my daughter's small lungs, her cry began but was stopped as Maxine's womb healed over her, wrapping her in its warm embrace.
“…you must kiss her, for her to breathe…” she whispered.
I looked down at Maxine's still face, her stomach swollen with pregnancy again, “I.. will never stop loving her, Cat, even when I learn to love you.”
“Aye.. I understand..”
I leaned down, my lips meeting my lover's. With the kiss, it seemed as if a part of my soul was taken, filled with the rage that Maxine had calmed. I lost her.
And with that… she was gone. “Now let Kaiba and Kim go in peace…” I whispered in defeat. Cat nodded kindly and with a snap of her fingers, Kaiba's bonds were removed. He rushed to Kim's side and held her close. I watched as she slowly opened her eyes and he cradled her in his arms, hugging her close. With another snap of the fingers, they were returned to Kaiba's manor.
I fought the emotion that burst inside me. I would never have that… not anymore. Simply for love's sake, I'd given up my love.
“Now kiss me,” Catalina whispered, leaning close, “Make our bond lasting.”
I looked up at her and leaned forward to her, just after taking one more glance at my brother. Our lips met and he thrust his blade into her back.
She gasped with pain, but our kiss was not broken. I tasted her tear that fell down her face as she clutched to my shirt, attempting to hold on.
But she'd already died.
As she crumpled to the ground like a beat-up doll, I looked at my older brother with near respect.
“Thank you,” I breathed.
“I do what I must, but only for myself. She was a cold, worthless bitch,” he replied.
I smiled a small smile and stood up fully, “Sesshoumaru… let's get out of here.”

{Bwahahaha. You love me. More on Meg's predicament next chapter. XD}
