Behind the Double Mirrors
Chapter Twelve: We’re a dying breed of reflections.

~Jack’s P.o.V.~
The explosion made Meg’s fingers fall from mine and before I slipped into unconsciousness, I seemed to flashback to another time. Hadn’t I suffered enough, losing someone dear due to a similar type of struggling?
“Rose…” I muttered, gripping onto a long part of one of the ship’s decks, slipping into full unconsciousness…slipping into the memory.

“You’re too damn clever, love,” I’d muttered as Rose had taken her locket from her neck and opened it, slipping half of it into the brig’s lock, moving it up and down gently before the lock clicked open. I realized nearly instantly how familiar it seemed, “I gave Meg that locket…” I whispered. “Who’s Meg?” Rose asked absent mindedly, retrieving weapons from the corner. I shook my head, “I… I don’t know. Nobody.” She perked a brow, passing me a sword.
“The crew should be here… soon, hopefully,” she whispered, “Shall we go up now?” I shook my head, “Be patient. The signal will come. Three cannon blasts, as planned, love. That demon and her crew won’ t know what hit them.”
“Well, being pirates, they should know that what hit them will be cannonballs,” she replied smartly. I chuckled, pulling her close, “So witty… how’s yer head?” I asked, kissing her forehead. “Better, since you put the bandage on… it’s stopped bleeding,” she replied, nuzzling close and resting her head on my chest.
“Once this is all over with, we’ll get ye the best medicine, love… and we’ll sail the seven seas, just the two of us, and it will all be alright again…” I whispered in her ear. She let out a shuddering sigh and nodded. But inside, I felt.. tortured. This feeling of déjà vu was almost… killing me.
“This is all too familiar…” I whispered, looking around. A mirror caught my eye and I released Rose, “Meg… look at this…” I said.
But she didn’t follow. “Who’s Meg?” she asked, the same question from earlier. I looked in the mirror. I was clothed differently from what I was really wearing. And looking at Rose’s reflection, she wasn’t wearing her normal corset-style dress. She was wearing jeans and a plain tank top. Around her neck was not only the locket I’d given her, but a Rush medallion. Bracelets on her wrists.. she looked different. But somehow.. the same. Her eyes pierced mine in the mirror.
“What, love?” I asked, staring at the mirror in wonder and confusion. “Who the hell is Meg?!” she repeated sternly. I turned to look at her and suddenly, the déjà vu wasn’t there. This wasn’t familiar, it had happened. I was in a dream… except I knew what was to happen and it’d happened too many times before.
“You’re not Meg…” I whispered. “No shit,” Rose answered, glaring at me.
“Oh gods… love.. Rose, I mean…” I whispered the last bit, “You’re… not here. This isn’t happening.. You’re…dead. You died right on this ship, after the collision…”
She glared at me and shook her head, “You’re talking nonsense, Jack…”
“…you’re right… you don’t die… ….I do…” I said softly.

Before the collision, I’d managed to rip off one of the seat cushions that doubled as a flotation device. I dove for Kim as the entire plane shook and collided with the two ships that had been below us seconds before. This couldn’t be real…
The plane flooded with water and I clawed around for Kim’s hand. She was already lost.. but where to?
The collision had broken part of the plane nearly in half, so I swam, still clinging to the seat cushion, half-floated to the surface and gasped for air. The wreckage that met my eyes made me sick. The flames were bursting forth from the plane and the ships, explosions from gunpowder filling the air. In the sea of wreckage and injured pirates, I could not find the one person that meant the entire world to me.

“Cat…” an unfamiliar voice called as I ripped my eyes away from Maxine’s. A female voice…
The voice belonged to a silver-haired demon, her fox-like ears perked up; she resembled… or obviously was… a kitsune. She stopped short and looked at Maxine. “YOU!” she shouted.
“You!” Maxine said in reply. It dawned on me who it was. How Maxine recognized her, however, was beyond me.
“Minoko?!” I shouted. “InuYasha… you bastard!” She screamed, lunging for me. “Minoko, stop!” Cat shouted, grabbing her from behind.
“He killed Seto!” She screamed, glaring at me.
“Minoko, you don’t understand…” Cat whispered, holding her trembling friend, “Something… something’s gone wrong…”
“Kaiba’s alive…” I whispered. Minoko looked at me, “No thanks to you, bastard.”
“No.. he never died…” I said. But inside I knew… I was wrong. There were so many twists and turns in this confusion.
“…we’re all dead, aren’t we?” I said suddenly. Maxine looked at me, tears stinging her eyes, “That can’t be… we’re just.. not here. Not together.”
Cat looked at me, the reality digging in, “…You’re simply a reflection of the InuYasha I knew, aren’t you?”
“And Maxine…?” I asked, “A reflection of you? Of us? What we could’ve had?”
Her eyes lowered as she nodded slowly, “It is so. But you don’t belong with her.”
“…it’s time to face reality, isn’t it?” Maxine said softly. Cat nodded slowly, everything sinking in for all of us.
We weren’t even supposed to be here, be alive, be together…
But everything that had happened with Maxine had been a repetition of happenings with Cat.
It was all one big déjà vu.
One big…
Reflection.
