Chapter One
Hiei scanned the desert in front of him. It had to be around here somewhere. Word on the streets told of seven mystical artifacts known as the `Millennium Items'. They were said to be so powerful that anyone who possessed all seven of them would become ruler of the world. Even powerful demons such as himself would be no match for their power. After extracting information from several different sources, and ensuring that they could not spread the information any further, Hiei learned that two of the items were reportedly being kept underground in Egypt. Guarded only by a family of mortal tomb keepers, it would be an cinch for Hiei to steal them. If he could find the damn place first, that is. His eyes came to a halt when he noticed what appeared to be two wooden doors in the desert sand.
`Well if that's not an obvious entrance' he mused to himself, thinking that this task would be much simpler than he originally thought. Using his supernatural speed, he ran and opened the wooden door, and without hesitating, jumped into the darkness below.
Not even bothering to ignite the torch that he found near his feet, he began to explore the rooms. He was a fire demon and had no need for such trivial hings. He searched each room thoroughly, leaving no corner untouched. Book, papers and scrolls written in a language he couldn't comprehend littered the floor everywhere. It appeared that whoever had dwelt here had been in a great hurry to leave, and had yet to return. In the deepest part of main `hall' Hiei found two great doors inscribed with more hieroglyphs. Assuming this to be the main shrine of the dwelling, he entered, feeling if the items were anywhere, they would be in this room. Yet he still found nothing. He sensed the faint presence of a lingering magical aura that he assumed had originated from the items.
`Someone must have gotten here first' he thought angrily, `and when I find that bastard, I'll make him regret it.' Returning to the surface, he planned his next move. He had exhausted his only lead. After straining his mind, he remembered Kurama had said something about some small town opening a new museum on Egyptology. The fox may be retired, but that didn't mean he didn't keep up on the latest news on artifacts and other items of his interest. Perhaps he would find a lead there. He began to run back toward the land he had only left a few days prior, cursing his bad luck.

Malik stood staring at the hieroglyphs on the ancient tablet hung in his sister's museum. Even after everything they had been through because of this piece, he still found himself amazed at the intricate details of the tablet. Every detail of it had already been seared into his memory during the tomb keeper's initiation ritual. He would carry those symbols for as long as he lived, and forever bear the burden of his consequential actions on his soul. He glanced down at the Millennium Rod grasped in his hands. Even after all the trouble that he had caused, Yugi had insisted that Malik take the item back, saying that he and Yami no longer had any use for it. Glancing once more at the tablet, Malik wandered into the hallway of the museum and was greeted by a chipper Ryou.
“Hey Malik! Would you like to go get something to eat?” He asked in his naturally sweet voice. “I was just about to meet the others in the park, but I thought I'd drop in on you first.”
“Sorry, but I really can't. Isis is out, so I have to watch the museum for her. Besides, I don't think the others have quite forgiven me yet.” He said a little sadly. And it was true. Yugi and Ryou seemed to be the only members of the clique that had seemed to forgive him for the Battle City incident. Joey had almost throttled Yugi when he found out that he had given Malik and Isis back their Millennium items. Kaiba had to intervene to prevent his boyfriend from doing something that he would surely regret later. Surprisingly, even Tea had found it hard to forgive someone who had once possessed her mind and forced her to hurt her precious friends. Not that he really cared if SHE hated him or not. Still, for someone who preached constantly about love and friendship and all that jazz, she sure was closed minded about whom she allowed into her group.
“I wouldn't worry to much about it. They'll come around soon, you'll see.” With a final wave, Ryou exited through the front door of the museum.
“Goodbye” Malik said to his retreating back. Suddenly, Malik felt very alone. There was really nobody in the museum except himself, even Rishido had errands given to him by Isis to complete. Malik stood thinking of something to entertain himself. He was nearly tempted to use the Rod's powers again, just so he'd have something interesting to do. However he vowed he would never use his powers for something like that again. He sat at the front counter and laid his head in his hands. He eventually drifted off to sleep, not noticing the black haired boy that had silently crept in moments later.
