A Fishy Tale

Chapter 1

The small village of Sakoa Bay was a quiet, sleeping town of fishermen, with one school that taught all grades from preschool to twelve, a cluster of huts, by a cliff- face, and a small harbor, and though small was always busy doing one thing or another. This, was the home of Yugi Moto, a small boy, who had just started the ninth grade this year. He was rather short for his age, with the strangest hair you ever saw with blonde bangs, and spiky black, with crimson highlights, it was no wonder. However, you ask anyone around town, and he was a nice, and always willing to help. If you were having a bad day, seeing his face, and two, violet eyes looking at you would turn the whole thing around.

Most of the time, though, you would find the young lad sitting on his Grandpa's boating dock, right out the back of their house. He, and his Grandpa were the only ones living that close to the beach, and didn't fear any harm from weather. It even shocked most when the hurricane hit a couple years back, destroying almost everything, except their house. Many figured it was the rocky area that surrounded the home itself, protecting it from flooding and winds, while others thought it dumb luck. In any case, they were the most friendly people you ever did see.

On this particular morning, Yugi was taking his usual route towards school, taking the beach, until he reached the stairs that were built right into the face of the cliff itself. It was the longest way, but, it was the most beautiful, and fresh ways. He let the salty air wash over him like the warm breeze did while playing with his hair. His feet hit the soft sand as he made his way towards the community docks, which had the sounds of bobbing boats, and fisherman calls this early in the morning. Yugi squinted against the sun, trying to see if he couldn't find his Grandpa's boat out among the morning fishers. That's when he first lay eyes on the mysterious being. His hair was almost exactly the same as Yugi's own, only with blonde streaks jetting through the black part. Crimson eyes stared at him, as his slightly tanned body glistened with water droplets. "Heeeeeeeyyyy!!!!!!", Yugi said, waving.

The other looked up in hurried surprise, before jumping off the rock he'd been lounging on. However, Yugi thought nothing of it, as he rushed towards his school.

....

Yami, as he now liked himself to be called, swam gently to the bottom of the ocean, finding the sand, and seaweed to not be much of a company. It had been a long while since he'd been stuck here, in the ocean. Ever since his sister had cursed him, it'd been a game of survival. He managed as much as swimming away before she could kill him, but then, there was no one else of his kind. Not here, anyway. That boy, he'd yelled at Yami, the first time in a while at actually being spotted by any person on land. He was kinda cute though, Yami had to admit, plus a kid that smiled that big couldn't be all bad. Yami remembered ever coming upon any place near an ocean, he learned how to speak English, how to write, and read, and do math, and science, all from watching schools like his near the sea, or water. However, it was rare to find a high school near a body of livable water. So, he only knew up to eighth grade education, but what he knew, he knew well. Yami debated on trying to find another town, but, the benefits here were too much, there was not many pollutants in the water around here, plus, plenty of sunning rocks, close enough to were he could dip his tail in the water, without having to worry too much about being found, plus the fish were good. His body had found better ways to adapt to hunting, for one, his canines became sharper, making his catching fish easier, and his digestive tract changed to handle eating all of the fish, not including bones, or the head, in order to give him enough to live off of. However, he was slim from having to catch his meal before eating it.

Yami felt that by watching that boy, he might find out more about the kind of people living here. They might not be as bad as some have been. Yami made a swim for his favorite rock near the local school, it wasn't that far a distance.

....

Yugi try as he might to pay attention to his studies, found himself thinking more, and more about that boy from the ocean. No one had ever swam out to Look- Out Rock, as the fishermen called it, and pulling a boat up to it was too dangerous. So, how did that boy get out that far? "Yugi, Yugi Moto, are you feeling all right, dear?", his teacher asked.

"Um... No, I'm... Not, may I please be excused to go home?", Yugi asked, politely.

"No problem, I'll just write up a note for the office about you leaving.", came the reply.

....

After packing up his school books, Yugi had headed down to the beach. Surprisingly, there was that boy again, only he was too busy staring into the windows of the school to notice Yugi... He climbed a little, before Yugi saw something unbelievable, a fish tale... It was a shiny whitish color, with various rainbow colored scales scattered about it. The fins themselves where a rainbow.... The boy seemed more interested in the window then anything else. "Hi.", Yugi said, the other jumped a bit, before turning around, "I'm Yugi Moto, and you are?...",

"None of your business.", the other replied, he slid from the rock, onto a lower one, before leaping into the water.

"Wait, I wanted to ask....",Yugi shut his mouth as the other was already far away from him to hear it.

So, Yugi started for home.

....

Yami swam hard, only slowing when he knew he was safe. 'Hi, I'm Yugi Moto and you are?...', the thought rang through his head.

Yami shuddered, that had been the first time anyone had talked to him since he.... He was changed into this. What if he had seen the tail? Then what would happen? He'd be caught and put inside a small tank for studies.... "No!", Yami yelled at himself in fury.

He wouldn't let that happen, he'd follow the kid no matter where he went.

....

Yugi stopped by the local library on the way home, and accessed the net to see if he couldn't find any mention of a tailed creature like the boy he'd seen earlier. His search was long, and patient, but soon he came upon a website that had what he was looking for. "The most elusive creature since bigfoot, the merman many have called Yami, for when he's usually seen was in the fall of darkness.", Yugi read, "So, that's what his name is.... I wonder if he ever gets lonely.",

....

Yami waited patiently until the boy came out of the building, then, he followed the boy, who walked on the cliff's edge. His blonde bangs waved in the wind, and the young boy would glance over the waters every once in a while. At one point, he stopped, and gazed across the vast waters, and for a little while, Yami actually thought he had been spotted, but, he found he was wrong, as the boy sat down on the cliff's edge. He sat for hours on end, just watching the horizon. Then, Yami heard a sound as though made of thunder.... The rock was breaking off. Yugi was still on it too, Yami had no time to react as the cliff fell into the waters below. Without thinking, Yami dove under to try to find the small boy, he knew these waters, and the undercurrent would be strong where Yugi fell in....

....

Yugi Moto gasped as the earth fell from underneath him, and caused him to be flung into the salty waters below. He did manage to gulp some air, but lost it when his head hit something. He started to try to kick for the surface, but, he couldn't swim to the top. Yugi knew he had no hope of escaping the whirling currents that shook his body too and fro. His end would come at the bottom of a watery grave.... He felt his mind numbed do to the lack of oxygen left in him.... As things began to slur together, Yugi could've sworn he'd seen a pair of crimson eyes staring into his.... Then, all went dark.

....

Yami swam his hardest, and finally broke surface near a shore that he knew was uninhabited. After dragging Yugi up on to the shore, Yami started to check to see if he was a live, that's when the other coughed up water, and rolled onto his side. Yami jumped back, both shocked, and yet, intrigued by the one who had found out about him. The boy's eyes rolled open, and he slowly sat up. It took him a while to even see Yami was there. When he did, however, he didn't look alarmed, or scared as some had been before... Just, normal, like finding a merman just happened everyday. "It's you.", Yugi breathed, "You're that boy from earlier aren't you?",

Yami just sat, and wondered whether or not to respond, he finally decided to go ahead and reply to the question. "Yes.", he said, nodding.

"You're Yami, right?", Yugi asked, "And you saved me, didn't you?",

The boy leaned forward with his questions, causing Yami to scoot back a little bit. "Yeah, so?", Yami retorted.

"Are you afraid of me, or something?", Yugi asked.

"No!", Yami exclaimed.

"Is that thing real?", Yugi pointed to his fins, "Could I... Touch it?",

"What?! Why would you wanna touch my tail for?", Yami asked.

"I'm just wondering if it's different from fish scales is all..", Yugi pouted.

"No, not really...", Yami admitted.

Yugi's face turned into one of concern as he looked at Yami's tail. "You got cut when you rescued me....", Yugi stated, "Let me see it.",

"It's nothing big, just a scrape from a rock is all.", Yami said, shooing Yugi's hand away from the area.

"If you take me back home, I can fix it up for you.", Yugi suggested.

"No thanks, it's fine.", Yami looked down at the cut for a bit, "It'll heal in a couple days.",

"No, I insist.", Yugi said, in protest.

"Fine, but only that, then you have to forget all about me.", Yami warned.

"But, why?", Yugi asked.

"Because you people might take and lock me in some side show for your amusement, that's why!", Yami said, frustrated.

"Is that why you're so mean to me when I try to just talk to you?", Yugi asked, "Because you're afraid of becoming some entertainment, or experiment?",

"...", Yami slowly spoke, "... Yes, that's why I.... I try to keep you away, I was afraid you might... Tell someone about me, and then. I'd be the next exhibit at Sea World, or some museum....",

"It's okay, if you take me back to my Grandpa's dock, no one will be around to see you, Grandpa doesn't usually get home until after dark anyways.", Yugi explained.

"I guess I could, if you're sure no one will find out about me....", Yami agreed, "Okay, then, I'll take you home, but that's it, after that I'm leaving and I don't want you to try to find me again, okay?",

"Okay.", Yugi agreed.

....

Yami swam away from that place slowly, and surely... He was swimming in the bay when a motor boat came... It's blades hit his tail, and Yami barely managed to get away from it alive, but, he felt weak, he was losing a lot of blood..... 'I have to get to shore.... Somehow, he managed to make it, but whether or not he survived would depend on whether or not anyone found him there....
