A Fishy Tale
Chapter 2
Yugi was taking his usual morning walk along the shoreline of the ocean, it was a Saturday, no school. It's just that Yugi didn't feel much like playing, he had made a promise he shouldn't have made, to never try to find Yami again... He obviously was lonely..... Yugi let his thoughts drift enough for him to trip over something, and fall flat on his stomach in sand. As Yugi got up, and turned to see what he had tripped over, he found it was Yami... He looked as though someone had cut him with a butcher's knife, most of the injuries occurring on his tail, but, from the trail of blood soaked sand, Yugi could tell they had bled badly... Yugi would have to tell someone about Yami to save his life... 'Grandpa will know what to do.', he thought to himself as he ran to his home.
....
Yami woke, still a little confused about what precisely happened to himself. It took him a while to notice he was in a net, that hanged just low enough to soak his chest with water. "Let me go!", Yami yelled, thrashing to try to get free.
"Yami! Quit it! You'll hurt yourself!", he heard Yugi shout, before he held the tail still, "You're not being captured! I found you all cut up on the beach a few days ago.",
"You tried to look for me?", Yami asked.
"No, I tripped over you on a morning stroll.", Yugi explained, "You had been cut all over, and left a huge trail of blood."
"I.... Think I... Remember it.... A motor boat.... And.... Trying to reach shore....", Yami whispered, "But, it's blurry.",
"That's okay, just don't move too much, I came to change your bandaging.", Yugi told him.
"If I have to stay in here, how am I to catch any food?", Yami asked.
"What do you eat?", Yugi asked.
"Fish, squid, and anything else I can break, catch, or find to eat.", Yami answered.
"Okay, then, I'll just ask Grandpa for all the fish too small to sell, and anything else other than fish he catches inside the nets.", Yugi explained, "There, done, so, are you hungry?",
"... Yes.", Yami replied, with a nod of his head.
"Here you go, Grandpa went ahead and cut it.", Yugi said, handing the Perch to Yami.
Yami turned to Yugi a look of doubt on his face... "Are you sure this is fish?", he asked.
"Yes, I'm sure.", Yugi nodded.
Yami cautiously bit into a piece. Then, his face lit with satisfaction, and it wasn't long before he'd polished his meal off. After that, Yami looked up at Yugi, "Why did you decide to save me?",
"Because you were hurt, and... I like you.", Yugi said.
"So, you saved me.", Yami said.
Yugi nodded, "Only other person that knows is my Grandpa, and he won't tell anyone. I was wondering... What is it like underneath the ocean, and all?", Yugi asked.
"Well, you do find a lot of stuff...", Yami mentioned, he took the bracelet off of his arm, "Like these...",
"Those are gold galleons, and rubies, and pearls....", Yugi said.
"I just thought that they were nice to look at, so I've picked them up on my travels... Then, I put them together using some fishing net.", Yami shrugged, "Aside from that, it does get pretty lonely...",
"Isn't there more of your kind? You know, mermen?", Yugi asked.
"No, I wasn't even one until a spell was cast on me.", Yami explained.
"What were you before that?", Yugi asked.
"I was human.", Yami replied, "It is a curse I will be forced to bear because I don't age at all.",
"That's sad.", Yugi said, shaking his head, "I have an idea. Why don't you just stay here, I mean, that Japanese bath is deep enough, and I know Grandpa and I prefer showers to baths, so we hardly use it.",
"Are you sure he wouldn't get mad if you let me?", Yami asked.
"Yeah, and if you like, I could move my bed down here, and talk with you at night.", Yugi said, "And then, before I go to school, I could leave the T.V. in here for you to watch.",
"What's a T.V.?", Yami asked.
"It's little moving pictures in a box.", Yugi explained.
"Oh, but, couldn't you just let me out so I could go to school too?", Yami asked, "I like to learn new things.",
"You want to learn?", Yugi asked, "Is that why you were outside the school looking into the one window that day?",
Yami nodded. "I got an idea, I'll bring all my textbooks, and extra tests and homework home for you to use.",
....
It was a while before Yugi's Grandpa came home and went into the room that Yami was in. "How're we doing, hmm?", he asked Yami as he got ready to change the wet, and dirty bandages again.
"....", Yami remained silent watching him.
"There, that's better.", Grandpa said, "I'd say a couple weeks, and it should heal itself back up, at least enough to swim with it again.",
"When does Yugi get home from school?", Yami asked.
"Not until afternoon, why?", Grandpa asked.
"I'm starting to get rather board is all....", Yami sighed.
"Oh, well then here, I'll be right back.", Grandpa said, a couple minutes later returning with the TV, which off course Yami had never seen.
"Is that the TV thingy Yugi told me about?", Yami asked.
"Yeah, here, why don't you watch some?", Grandpa said, handing Yami the remote, and telling him two things, how to use it, and not to get it wet.
Soon, he found many things out that he didn't even know existed, such as such as computers, actually, Yami learned a lot from watching the TV, he just had to watch the right things.
....
When Yugi got home, he brought all of his books to Yami, who read all the way up to where Yugi was in about two, and a half hours. Not only that, but he also took all the tests.
....
Eventually, Yami's tail did heal up, and he was swimming around all he wanted. Yugi made sure he was given his usual fish too. However, there was more to be done than just healing Yami... Yugi agreed to help him find the spell to make him human again. As well as other challenges along the way.
