Yu-Gi-Oh! Fan Fiction ❯ Absence of Color ❯ Leaving the Past Behind ( Chapter 4 )
[ T - Teen: Not suitable for readers under 13 ]
Here’s chapter 4. Sorry for the delay, my school work is really killing me along with projects and finals and all that school...stuff. Yea, so anyways I’ve also had a bit of writer’s block so, let’s see how this goes.
“OW SHIT THAT HURTS!!!” Screamed Jounouchi as Mai was holding his nose.
“Well maybe if you stopped moving it wouldn’t hurt as much”
Everyone was in Kaiba’s limo on their way to the hospital to repair Jou’s and Kaiba’s broken noses and bruised, possibly broken ribs. Everyone urged Kaiba to wait for the paramedics but he insisted that he would never degrade himself by riding in an ambulance. Shizuka was sitting next to him (yes you guessed it, Shizuka and Kaiba are dating) while everyone else was by Jou.
“The next time I see him, I’m gonna kick his ass!” Joey’s voice was squeaky due to him holding his nose.
“Oh shut up Katsuya...” Seto mumbled from his seat. “If you couldn’t kick his ass this time what makes you think that you’re gonna be able to beat him next time?”
“KAIBA... AH SHIT!!!!” Jou tried to jump at Kaiba but Mai’s hand on his nose held him back.
“Don’t try it...you know very well I’m not in a good mood”
“Neither am I Kaiba so shut the fuck up! I swear, my head is going to explode from this head ache... ”
“You’re doing a good job of ignoring it...”
Jounouchi said nothing and decided to ignore Kaiba and the splitting headache. One thing was for sure. No one beats Jounouchi Kaysuya without paying for it. He didn’t care if the person used to his friend. As for Seto, he didn’t really think of getting revenge. Around the time his ribs started to hurt, he was about ready to go find Yami and kill him. For once in his life he didn’t know what to do. He stared at the blood on his shirt and figured what it would be like to see someone else’s blood on his shirt. Maybe... Yami’s. But he knew he couldn’t bring himself to that extreme. The only reason he’d be willing to kill was if someone hurt Mokuba or Shizuka. Besides he knew one of the rules of battle; it’s more degrading to let an enemy live with shame than to die. So, he would let Yami live...for the time being.
Yami finally reached home. Yugi was gone. The others must’ve called him and told him what happened. He went upstairs and turned on the hot water. When the water hit his body he winced from the pain. Though it seemed to wash the pain away it couldn’t do the same for his sins.
“I have to get out of here”
He got a suitcase and looked in his closet to see what he had. He took some clothes, his duel disk, deck and some money he had. He had made up his mind and there was no stopping him now. He had to leave. Obviously he wasn’t wanted so...why stay?
He walked downstairs and called a taxi.
“Aren’t you gonna say goodbye?”
His conscience was talking to him.
No...why say goodbye? Not only wasn’t he good at them but it wasn’t needed. Just leave and get it over with he thought.
The drive to the airport took about 30 mins. He got out of the taxi and proceeded to the terminal where he bought his ticket. There, he came upon the person he least expected to see.
“Grandpa...I...*ahem*...what are you doing here?”
“An old friend called me and told me he was in town. But what I should be asking is what are you doing here?”
Sogoroku looked at Yami’s ticket. Yami looked down at it also.
“I’m leaving.”
“Why?”
Yami looked around, not making contact with Sogoroku’s eyes.
“I see...When do you leave?”
“Two hours.”
“Let’s talk.”
Sogoroku took Yami over to the waiting area next to the gate. There, Yami told him everything that happened. For once it seemed that everything was a dream. When he finished his story, Yami couldn’t speak anymore. His eyesight was fixed on the ticket in his hands. Sogoroku listened to Yami patiently. He loved his adopted grandson just like Yugi. He was 18 now, and even though he couldn’t control his decisions, he was damned if he was just going to let him go without knowing what was wrong.
“So you’re leaving?”
“Why not...It’s not like anyone’s gonna miss me.”
“I don’t think that Yami.”
“For one and this is very slight. I agree with Yugi. He does have a right to take credit for his own accomplishments, without you. But that is where I stop agreeing with him. He did not have to act this way; pushing you away, when you have been a major part of his life for the past three years. Yes, he is wrong and I’ll talk with him when I get home, and everyone else. But now...let’s talk about your little attempt.
Yami grew stiffed and winced. He knew what Sogoroku meant: his suicide attempt and cutting. He knew that he didn’t have to tell him about it, but his conscience would be hurting him forever. Besides, Sogoroku was the closest thing Yami had to a father, and right now, he was the only one he trusted.
“Why did you do it?”
“I...I needed an escape.” Yami’s voice was quiet.
“I...wanted something to help with the pain that I felt...I...I wanted to die. I mean...what was there left if even my friends shun my own existence....”
“Yami....”
Sogoroku couldn’t help but agree and be mad at Yugi. How could he do this? No one deserves to be refused or neglected.
“Attention, now boarding, American Airlines Flight 389 to JFK Airport at Gate 4. Attention, now boarding American Airlines Flight 389 to JFK Airport at Gate 4.”
“That’s me”
Yami began to walk away. But Sogoroku wasn’t going to let him go without saying goodbye.
“Yami wait.”
“What...”
“Listen I can’t stop you from leaving...I just want to say, good luck. Where ever you go. I’m going to miss you...um...if they change their minds and ask you to come back, what do I say?”
“Tell them...listen Grandpa... I’m leaving to find something better and I’m not thinking about coming back. Tell them I’m sorry if I ever did anything wrong.”
“Attention, last call for American Airlines Flight 389 to JFK Airport at Gate 4”
“I got to go...”
“Yami wait!” Sogoroku grabbed Yami and hugged him.
“I love you ok? You’re always going to be my grandson; my son. And I promise me you won’t hurt yourself anymore”
“Thanks...I...I promise”
Yami broke the hug and walked toward the Gate. He stopped to take one last look at Sogoroku and left. Sogoroku walked to the exit and got into the cab that would take him to the Game Shop. He wished Yami luck wherever he went. Yami was now gone and his next order of business was to talk some sense into his other grandson.
On the plane, Yami thought about what was ahead. He was leaving home and heading for a new country. What was ahead he didn’t know. What he did know was that he had to leave his past behind. It was only going to hurt him more to stay. It was going to hurt him to live with the memories. He had to find new ones. He had to find happiness.
Looking out the window, he saw the silhouette of Japan in the sea, the sun in the horizon and about his future completely oblivious to the tears rolling down his face.
*whew* Wow...was that good I can’t tell. Amazing how things just pop in your head. Excuse me for the mushy stuff but that’s how some people are. Also, I apologize if I don’t update that often. I got a lot of work and band performances, but I’ll write whenever I can. Thx.
