Mystery Visitor

Donny, Jay, and Asher ran into Seto's office and gaped at the sight of the brains on the floor. Robbie was sitting on Seto's chair, his body shaking and his arms were wrapped around himself protectively. Joey stood over the teen and put a comforting hand on his shoulder.
Jay walked up to the gray matter on the floor and picked it up casually. “Now here's something you don't see every day.”
“Where did it come from?” Donny asked.
“I…I came early…to open Seto's mail for him. And…I found….the brain in that box in the corner. Attached to it was a note reading, `You're next, Mr. Kaiba.'”
Asher walked over to the box in the corner and looked inside. The box was lined with a green material now stained red in some places. The material on the top of the box remained green. “Don, look at this.”
The ex-sniper took the box from Asher. “What is it?”
“The top of box is still the pretty green. The rest is all bloody.”
Donny raised an eyebrow and stared at the box. “How could the rest of the material be all bloody and the top of the box remain untouched by the blood?”
Jay looked at the box in Donny's hand. “Yeah, if it was sent through the mail, the box would have been thrown, tossed, and would be banged up. But look at it! The box isn't even dented!”
Seto crossed his arms. “Are you saying that someone just brought this box into my office? Don, we may have a security breech, if that is indeed the case.”
Jay bit his lip in thought. “Don, give me the box.” Jay lifted the brain and Robbie covered his eyes quickly, still trembling. Jay placed the brain in the box. “Asher, give me the lid.” Jay took the lid and examined it.
“What's on your mind?” Joey asked, rubbing Robbie's back.
Jay replaced the lid on the box and removed it. The green material did not touch the box's bloody contents.
“Jayden, tell me what is going on,” Seto demanded.
“This box was not sent by mail. Somebody carried it in here and left it.”
Donny narrowed his eyes. “You mean someone just waltzed in here and put this on Mr. Kaiba's desk?”
Asher's right eye twitched. “Person must BURN!”
“How else would it have got here? Robbie, was this box already here when you came in?”
The teen swallowed hard. “Uh-huh.”
Jay put the box on the desk. “Someone came up here and delivered that box personally.”
Donny went to Seto's phone and dialed the front desk. “Alex? Did you authorize any entry to the upper levels?”
[The postman came.]
“Postman? Alex, he delivers to the bottom floors! Did you allow the postman access to the Kaiba Floor where the family lives?”
[No, Don. Why? What's wrong?”
“I'll brief the department later, Alex. You said you gave no one access to the upper floors? Are you positive?”
[Yes, Donny.]
“Did anyone request access to the upper floors, but were denied entrance?”
[No, Donald.]
Donny clenched his teeth. “Then how did this bastard get in?!”
[Don, what happened? Is Seto okay?]
“Mr. Kaiba is not safe, Alex. If someone gained access to the upper floors without your knowledge or anyone else's knowledge, Seto's life is at risk.”
Donny slammed the phone on the receiver and looked at the box on the table. “How could someone gain access to the restricted areas without anyone's knowledge?”
Seto crossed his arms and walked casually to the window. The tapped his fingers on his arm. “The elevator. Everyone needs a Personal Identification Number to get to the upper floors of KaibaCorp. However, to get to the top level where we live, you need a special number.”
Jay snapped his fingers. “The elevator stores the access codes! We can look back in its archives and search the numbers! I'll do that! I have to get my tools from the office.” Jay ran out of the room.
Seto looked at Robbie and walked slowly to the desk. The CEO sat at the edge of the desk and looked at his trembling assistant.
“Robert, I know this is scary for you, but it's business as usual around here,” the CEO said casually.
Robbie swallowed hard. “But….but…it's a human brain! In a box!”
“We've had all sorts of things, Robbie. Decapitated chickens….boxes of manure…Death threats….eyeballs..you name it, we've had it.”
“Deca-----Decap----Decapitated chick-ens?”
Donny nodded. “You could smell the horse manure through the box.”
“How could…how can you be so c-calm?”
Seto crossed his legs. “Robert, this is KaibaCorp. We have many enemies. Many companies want to see us out of business.”
“Not only that, Robbie,” Joey added. “We're also a target because of Seto's relationship with me.”
Seto nodded. “We're a safe company where all employees are treated fairly. I have a few gay couples working here. Jay and Karl are the only gay couple in the Public Relations Department….I can think of a guy in Engineering and Product Development who have partners elsewhere. I know there's one lesbian in my Marketing Department. They're all good people who don't need to worry about being criticized for their life choices.” Seto grinned. “I've never seen anyone tie up a person so well and so quickly as Karl. And Jay knows more about bombs and electronics than I do.”
Robbie took a deep breath. “I guess I have a hard time shaking this creepy feeling.”
“You get used to it, Seto said. “Donny, everyone will need to be assigned new codes.”
“Can I burn the old codes?” Asher asked with a grin.
Seto sighed. “Asher, you can't burn computer codes. You can, however, do this for me.” Seto opened up the top drawer of his desk and scribbled something down quickly on a piece of paper. “I'm tired of waiting for Mr. Katana to get back to me. I hear he has a very nice and expensive cabin in Pennypack woods. It would be a shame if something happened to it.” Seto handed Asher the paper.
A grin crossed Asher's face and his right eye twitched repeatedly. “So…much……HAPPINESS! Fire……..good.”
Seto nodded. “Yes, Asher, Fire good. Now go out there and make me proud.”
Asher left with a little trail of drool slipping down his chin.
“I worry about him sometimes,” Joey said.
“That makes two of us, Joe,” Donny agreed.
“He'll be fine, pups,” Seto shrugged casually.
Robbie looked up at Seto. “What do we do while we wait to see what Jay says about the elevator?”
The CEO grabbed a pad of paper and a pen. “Take notes.”
“For what?”
“Our staff meeting with Information Technology. We have that meeting in one hour and we have to prepare.”
Robbie looked at the box on the desk. “Are you sure?”
“Robert, this THING is not going to stop me from running my company! Now, you were hired to do this job. Things like this are going to happen.
Seto pat Robbie on the shoulder. “Go get something to drink, Robbie. Take a few minutes to compose yourself.”
Robbie nodded. “Y-Yes, sir.”
“Donny, let's see how Jay is coming along with that elevator.” Donny grabbed the box with the brain.
Joey watched Seto and Donny leave.
“Seto has guts. I don't get how he can be so calm,” Robbie said.
“Seto's no stranger to threats, Robbie. It makes me nervous to tell you the truth, but I know Seto can handle himself well.”
Robbie heaved a heavy sigh. `I want to go home to Aten.'
Donny and Seto walked down the hallway to the elevator. Jay connected a small device to the elevator control panel.
“Any luck?” Donny asked.
“I have to download the codes and cross reference them with the database in my office.”
Seto crossed his arms. “I have to remember to bring that up in the meeting. I'll have to tell Robbie to work on it with the Technical Department”
“How long will it take to download the codes and cross reference?”
“It will take a couple of hours. There's a lot of people here and there's hundreds of thousands of codes.”
Donny leaned against the entrance to the elevator. “This search also includes people from KaibaCorp around the world?”
Jay nodded. “I have to search everyone's code. If I searched only here, we may miss it and we may have to scan all over the database. I may as well do a detailed search once.”
“I have a staff meeting shortly. Jay, you work on it and tell me what you find. I want an answer!”
The CEO returned to his office.
“Do you think you can do this, Jay?”
Jay giggled. “I can do it, Don. Just give me time. I will have an answer. In the meantime, I would put someone in the elevator to prevent any further unauthorized entry.”
“Good idea. Is Karl due in today?”
“He has a doctor's appointment. He'll be here in about an hour.”
“You guys have vacation time coming. Any plans?”
Jay smiled. “Besides pounding Karl through the mattress until he's senseless, nothing much. We may just hang out at home.”
“Jay, you stay here with the elevator until Karl comes. When he arrives, tell him to watch the elevator today.”
“I'll be sure to let him know.”
“I'm also going to go through the security camera tapes. If anyone entered the elevator, the cameras will see them.”
*********
Seto sat back in his chair and turned his head to the window. He watched the clouds go by through the window. His eyes coasted to the desk where the brain on the box had been.
Who was able to gain access to the top floors undetected?
Seto ran his fingers through his hair as he heard someone knock on the door. “Come in.”
Jaimen opened the door. “Hi, dad. Can I come in?”
“Come in, son.”
The eighteen year old closed the door behind him. “Dad, I heard about what happened today.”
“Jaimen, I will handle everything. I'm in control of the situation. I won't let the situation control me or stop me from running KaibaCorp the way I think it should be run.”
Jaimen fidgeted with his fingers nervously. “How can you be in control of the situation?”
“By not being afraid or giving into intimidation.”
“Aren't you afraid?”
Seto narrowed his eyes at his son. “Kaibas are never afraid, Jaimen. We don't know the meaning of the world fear. Besides......eventually, Jaimen, you learn to stop being afraid of what happens to you. Maybe in a few years, I'll talk to you about what made me not be afraid of anything anymore.”
Jaimen walked to the window and looked down at the city. “Mom told me all about what she did to you....in detail.” The teen turned to his father. “Did that help you not be afraid?”
“Jaimen......what it taught me was not to make myself freeze from fear. I promised myself never to let fear get the best of me anymore. Since then, I refuse to let fear get the best of me.”
“I don't understand.”
“Sometimes, Jaimen, it takes something incredibly painful to teach us a valuable lesson. It's after learning those lessons that we need to take a good look at ourselves and see what we can learn from them.”
Jaimen looked back at the sunset. “I didn't like living with mom. When I get a girlfriend...and marry someday...I don't want to be the parent that my mom was to me. I'd never tie my kid to the bed so I could bring in man after man after man. She was embarrassed to have me. I was her disappointment. Mom said she enjoyed what she did to you....but I was just an `unfortunate result' of what happened.”
“Jaimen, had I known that woman was pregnant from that incident, I would have brought you here to live with me.”
Jaimen turned to him. “You would? But why? I'm nothing but a reminder of what happened.”
“What happened was not your fault, Jaimen. I just want you to enjoy your life. I want you to have the life that I never had the opportunity to live.”
“That's why I wanted to see you.”
“Oh? What's on your mind?”
“Dad, may I learn how to fly the family jet and the helicopter?”
Seto's eyes widened. “Why? I pay other people to fly those things for me.”
“I want to learn how to fly. Come on, dad! I promise not to crash it or damage it.”
Seto leaned back in his chair. “Jaimen, I don't know if that's a good idea.”
“Dad, I promise I'll be careful! I really want to learn how to fly a plane!”
“Okay, Jaimen. You can learn to fly the plane, but don't have Asher teach you. He'll end up crashing you into something just to watch the place burn. I'll talk to Donny about it.”
Jaimen smiled. “Thanks, dad! You won't regret this!”
***************************
Aten sipped his tea as he flipped through and Egyptian prayer book. His father had given this to him as a birthday present for his seventeenth birthday.
The Egyptian “Book of the Dead” rested beside his hand.
Miranda turned on the radio to listen to the news. “Hello, Aten.”
“Hi, Mom.”
“All ready for the art exhibit tomorrow?”
“I only have four paintings finished. The one I'm working on won't be done in time. I hope I can sell my paintings.”
“You never had a problem with selling your paintings, Aten. I wouldn't worry.”
Vera walked into the room, her hips swaying. “Miranda-Darling, I'm out of Enchante No. 46.”
Aten's nose wrinkled as the heavy scent of perfume filled the air. `She must be bathing in that stuff to hide the smell of tobacco.'
“Vera, we're going to be a little busy today. Aten has to see Dr. Chapman and I have to go grocery shopping, and we have to pick up more of Aten's medication. I also have to do the laundry.”
“Aten can bring the laundry from the basement, darling. He does have two legs.”
Aten swallowed hard. “I don't go down there. It's scary.”
“Then use the light.”
“I can't.”
“You can't use a simple light?” Vera asked, rolling her eyes.
Miranda sighed in resignation. “Okay, Vera, okay. We'll take you to the store.” She grabbed the laundry basket and descended the stairs to the basement.
Vera sat at the kitchen table and grabbed Aten's “Book of the Dead.”
“What's this garbage for?”
Aten grabbed the book from her angrily. “This is not garbage! I'm looking for chants for my Black Candle, so back off!”
“Ooo…testy, aren't we?”
“This is my Faith, woman, and if you don't like it, that's your own problem…not mine.”
Vera shrugged. “Whatever.”
Aten took another sip of his tea as the news sounded on the radio.
[This morning, the body of two young males were found in Holy Cross Cemetery. The young men's names are not being released until their bodies can be identified. One of the young men were shot in the back repeatedly. The other teen had been brutally beaten and mutilated beyond recognition. The Crusaders for Moral Decency have taken responsibility for the deaths of the young teens.]
The Egyptian shook his head. “Those poor boys.”
“Hmph…they deserve it.”
“But they did nothing to deserve it! That group just attacks innocent people.”
Vera crossed her arms. “They attack people who violate good, wholesome values. And it's only a matter of time, Aten Ishtar, that they come after you. And I'll have front row seats to watch them.”
Aten narrowed his eyes. “And if they kill me, I will haunt your dreams and make your life a living nightmare.”
Vera laughed. “I'd like to see you try!”
“Watch me.”
Aten grabbed his books and walked into his studio, shutting the door angrily behind him.
***************************
Seto sat back in his leather chair. “I can't remember a time when someone hasn't tried to destroy KaibaCorp or its reputation. What sick bastard would send a brain?'
A tiny quiet knock sounded on the door.
“Enter.”
Mokuba stood at the door as his children crowded around his ankles. Ivy, Lily, Ceres, and Cassie ran into the office in their pajamas.
“Hi, Big Borhter. The kids have to say goodnight.”
The little children ran to the CEO, reaching up to be hugged.
“Goodnight, Chibi Mokubas,” the CEO smiled.
Ivy, Lily, and Cassie giggled. “We're Chibi Mommies! We aren't a boy like daddy!” Lily laughed.
Ivy snickered. “Ceres is Chibi Daddy!”
Ceres smiled up at his uncle. The little boy had inherited Mokuba's smile and had looked like his father when he was a little boy. “Sweet dweams, Unkie Seto!”
Seto leaned down and was covered in chibi kisses.
“You kids sleep tight, Seto said.
“I hope you dweam of good tings,” Ceres said.
Ivy added, “Wike candy canes and big ice cweams!”
Lily smiled. “And cute puppy dogs!”
The CEO grabbed the triplets and hugged them tightly. “Mokuba, your kids are so cute!”
The children squealed and Mokuba laughed.
“Don't snap my kids in half, Seto. I don't think I can tape them back together.”
“It's so hard not to squish them to death!”
Seto put down the kids. “Go to bed, chibis.”
Cassie waved to Seto quietly and followed her older siblings out of the room.
“I'll be right in to read you a story!” Mokuba called to his scurrying children. “How are you holding up, Seto?”
“Better than ever.”
“You don't sound too convincing.”
“It's nothing you need to concern yourself with, Mokuba. It's been a long day, kiddo.”
Mokuba sighed. “I hear ya. See you after I get the kids tucked into bed.”
Mokuba left Seto alone in his office.
“I can't upset Mokuba with this.'
The CEO strolled to the window and narrowed his eyes. “I won't give in to intimidation. I refuse to do so.”
Another knock on the door sounded.
“Enter!”
Jay and Donny entered and closed the door behind them.
“I have finished my examination of the elevator data.”
“And?”
Donny and Jay exchanged worried glances. The sniper folded his hands in front of him.
“The last code punched before Robbie arrived at work was 14298.”
Seto's blue eyes shifted between Jay and Donny. “That's great to hear, but who does that code belong to?”
Jay stood up straight and looked his boss in the eye. “Hayden Kaiba.”
