The Barrier
Yugi opened his hand and accepted Joey's wedding ring. He stared at the piece of gold in disbelief. His eyes were teary and red from crying. Glenn ran into the waiting room and stood beside Yugi, holding his lover on his feet. The shorter duelist wavered on his feet unsteadily and threatened to give out underneath him.
Yugi looked up at Zira with large purple eyes. “Joey's dead…….isn't he?”
Zira looked down at Yugi with a disappointed look in his eye. “Yugi, come into my office.”
Yugi sniffled. “I want to see Joey's body…..He was my best friend for years….We've been friends since Sophomore year of high
school….He helped rescue my Grandpa….Please…I have to see Joey's body.”
Zira put his hand on the sobbing duelist's shoulder. “Yugi, come with me.”
Glenn held Yugi on his feet. “Come on, Yugi. Let's follow him and see what he has to say.”
Yugi covered his mouth as he looked at the blood-stained ring. He could not lift his eyes to look anywhere else.
Zira sat with Yugi in his office. “Yugi…Joey isn't dead. By all rights, he should be. The surgeon is in there stitching him up
now.”
Yugi broke down and sobbed into the hand holding the ring. “Joey…..Joey, thank God…”
Glenn rubbed Yugi's back and looked up at the doctor. “How badly was he injured?”
Zira leaned forward in his chair. “The bullet went straight through Joey's body. The bullet traveled into his abdomen, piercing
the lower part of the liver and exited through Joey's back. The police are looking for the bullet now. We had to remove part of
Joey's liver as a result and he has massive damage done to his abdomen.”
“I don't want Joey to die,” Yugi whimpered.
“Joey, I will do everything I can to make sure that Joey doesn't die. I will promise to do my best and keep him alive.”
“I won't leave until I get to speak to him.”
“You may be waiting a long time, Yugi. If Joey was conscious at all about what was going on, the pain would be too great for
him. I put him on a morphine and tranquilizer drip to keep him asleep.”
Yugi held onto Glenn's hand. “Does he have a good chance of survival?”
Zira wrung his hands together nervously. “I only give him a forty percent chance of survival, Yugi.”
Yugi sobbed into his hands. “Not Joey! Please don't let Joey die!”
“However, Yugi, there is always a chance that Joey could recover. I will do my best to keep him up and running.”
Yugi nodded. “I wonder where Ryou is….Ryou should have been here by now.”
“Yeah, you're right. Doctor, can we call Ryou and tell him what's going on?”
Zira pushed the phone over to Glenn. “Go on. I have to check on my patient. I'll be right back.”
Glenn picked up the phone and dialed.
Yugi's eyes fixated on the bloody wedding ring in his hand. ”Joey….please don't die.”
************************************
Malik carried the laundry upstairs and placed it on the couch. He turned on his music and sang as he folded the clothes. The
Egyptian saw Ryou enter the room through the corner of his eye.
“Hi, Ryou, what's up?”
Ryou went over to the stereo and turned off the music. “This is what's up! Is this your idea of a sick joke?”
“What?”
Ryou held up a pair of pink socks. “My favorite white socks are now PINK!”
Malik groaned. “Oh, man! I asked Marik to put the clothes into the washer for me this morning. I wasn't feeling good. I had a
hell of a headache.”
Ryou walked up to Malik and growled. “What am I going to do with pink socks?!”
“Ryou, you wear jeans all the time anyway. Nobody sees your feet.”
Ryou pushed Malik back angrily. “That's not the point! I now have pink socks!”
Malik narrowed his eyes and gripped Bakura's shirt in his hands. “Ryou, I wasn't feeling well!”
“So you let an idiot like Marik Ishtar do MY laundry?! I thought you had more sense in your head than to let a color-blind yami
do my laundry!”
“Ryou, it's not Marik's fault he has a hard time with colors!”
“You should have taught him to be a little more careful.”
Malik folded Bakura's shirt. “I'll tell him, that, Ryou.”
Ryou grabbed the shirt from Malik's hands. “Listen to me when I'm talking to you!”
Bakura ran down the steps. “What on Earth is going on down here?”
Ryou held up his pink socks. “I now have pink socks!”
“Marik accidentally put his red speedo into the laundry and it turned Ryou's socks pink. And now he's bitching because I had a
headache and I asked Marik to put the laundry into the washer before he went to work.”
“Well, I guess I should be glad he does SOMETHING around here!”
Bakura growled. `I see I have to go track down Yami again…..Ryou's getting worse.'
“Ryou, give Ishtar a break.”
Ryou narrowed his eyes. “Don't mind if I do!”
Ryou punched Malik in the jaw, sending the hikari staggering back into Bakura.
“RYOU! STOP!” Bakura snarled as Ryou stepped back from the punch.
“Well, you asked me to give him a break.”
“I didn't mean that literally. Let's go, Malik. I'll deal with you later, Ryou.”
Ryou laughed. “I'm sure you will.”
Bakura lead Malik into the kitchen and sat the hikari on the chair. Bakura kneeled in front of Malik and touched the jaw
lightly. “Poor Malik. It's not that bad.”
Malik began to giggle a little.
“You were punched in the jaw and you're laughing about it?”
“Marik's telling me through the mindlink that he was just standing at the cash register when he felt someone punch him. I'm
laughing because he felt it, too.”
Bakura shook his head. “You Ishtars are too strange. You mean to tell me Ishtar was laughing because he felt pain?”
Malik shrugged. “I'm laughing because I can imagine him standing there and all of a sudden…BAM…he gets hit.”
“Insanity must run in the Ishtar Family. Well, your jaw doesn't look that bad.” Bakura leaned forward and kissed Malik on the
lips. Malik closed his eyes and wrapped his arms around Bakura's shoulders. The yami shifted closer to the other Egyptian
and felt the other man's legs wrap around his hips.
Bakura deepened the kiss and held the other man close to him. Ryou had not given him any kind of intimacy…and he missed
it. Bakura ran his hands along Malik's sides, remembering the familiar sounds of passion emanating from the Ishtar
bedroom the night before.
Moaning….begging…..whimpering……squeaky creaking of the Ishtar bed…..
The night before, Ryou had just turned over in bed and fell asleep, ignoring his heavy petting and gentle kisses.
Bakura stroked the golden hair of the Egyptian god pressed against him. A tiny whimper and Malik broke the kiss to travel
kisses down Bakura's exposed neck.
A knock at the door sent both yami and hikari falling back into reality.
Malik smiled at Bakura. “Bakura? Do you want to spend tonight with me?”
The yami grinned. “Sure I do. Ishtar can have Grumpy.”
Malik smiled uneasily. “Considering that Marik and Ryou haven't spoken to each other much lately, I can pretty much say that
Marik will be sleeping on the couch tonight, rather than in Ryou's bed.”
The desperate knock sounded again.
“I better get it before they break the door down,” Malik said as he struggled to stand up, his body hard from Bakura's
intimate attention.
He rushed to the door and found Donny, Karl, and Jay standing there with Jaimen and Ceres.
“Umm…hi, guys. What's--?”
“Take this.” Jay held Ceres out to Malik, the chibi's legs dangled and his little face smiled.
Malik took the little boy in his arms. “Hi, Ceres. Tell me what's going on.”
Donny crossed his arms in front of himself. “The Crusaders have taken KaibaCorp hostage. Mr. Kaiba, the family, and the
employees there are their prisoners.”
Malik gasped. “Oh no! Bakura! Come quick!”
Bakura ran to the door. His eyes narrowed at Don. “You're here to try to kill me again?”
“No, KaibaCorp, the Kaiba Family, and the employees are being held captive by the Crusaders.”
Bakura narrowed his eyes. “Those sons of bitches took over the company?”
Jay nodded. “All we heard on the radio is that there hasn't been any contact with the police yet by the Crusaders.”
“Joey has been rushed to the hospital,” Karl added. “The media says he was shot outside the building. The hospital released
a statement saying that Joey was in surgery and is in critical condition under heavy guard.”
Donny sighed. “Please…we can provide much better protection. However, Jay and Karl are the only two out today. Asher,
Kendall, and Maxine are in the building.”
Bakura shrugged. “Oh, and I was worried there for a moment.”
“What are you saying?”
“All Asher needs to do is set something on fire and that place will go up like a match.”
Jay shook his head. “But the Kaiba Family and the people trapped inside the building will be burned to death! Seto will die!
We can't have that happen!”
“Because he signs your paychecks?” Bakura asked, raising an eyebrow.
“No, because he is a good person, deep down. He's our boss, but also our friend.”
Bakura snickered. “Don, you're getting soft in your old age. Look, I can see your hair turning a little gray.”
Donny ran his fingers through his short, black hair. “Nevermind my gray hair, Bakura! We need you to watch Ceres and
Jaimen.”
Jaimen groaned. “Why me? I want to help, too!”
Donny shook his head. “No, Jaimen, you are the heir to KaibaCorp. If anything happens to you, Seto would never forgive us.
You and Ceres are safe here.”
“Why not drop them at Coffee-Boy and his Princess' apartment?”
“Otogi and Tristan can't protect these two like you and Marik can,” Karl responded.
Bakura leaned against the door. “We are not that much better without our Shadow Powers. We're damn near mortal now.
We're still Yami, but we don't have our powers anymore.”
“Still, you and Marik are a formidable force when put together, even as mortals,” Donny said.
Malik looked at Ceres in his arms. “We can watch them, Donny. That's terrible about KaibaCorp! I had no idea!”
“The place looked like a madhouse when Jaimen and I flew over it, so you're best staying here and watching the coverage on
the news.”
Bakura stepped aside to let Jaimen through. “I'll go check the place out. I can find my way into any building. I was the King
of Thieves, you know. I can find my way anywhere. Malik, can you watch after these two?”
Malik nodded. “Yeah, I can.”
“Thank you. It's best nobody know that these two are here. We don't want to draw unnecessary attention to them.”
Malik cuddled the little boy against him. “I'll take care of them, Don. Please help Seto.”
“I will. Let's go, boys.”
Bakura pat Ceres on the head. “I'll be back soon, little chibi.”
Malik hugged Bakura. “See you when you get back.”
“Malik, if you need anything while I'm gone, tell Ishtar through your mind link that I will be at KaibaCorp, trying to find my way
inside.”
“Are you sure you can do it?”
Bakura laughed. “I got in there once before. It shouldn't be that difficult.”
**************************
Aten stood outside the building and watched the sun setting behind the buildings. No communication had been made with
the police and no one had left the building. The teen looked down at the sidewalk, stained with Joey's blood. A policeman
called out from the statue of the Blue Eyes White Dragon.
“Sir, come here! We found it!”
Aten shivered as he gripped the Scepter of Ra in his hands. “What did they find?”
Miranda shook her head. “I don't know.”
Daniel, who had arrived earlier with their jackets, squinted to see what the men were carrying in the plastic bag. “They found a
bullet in the statue.”
Aria stood by her brother and shifted uncomfortably. “I wonder how Uncle Puppy is.”
Aten turned to her. “You can go check up on him. I can stay here.”
Kadin nodded. “Maybe I should go with you, Aria.”
Aria shook her head. “Nah, you stay here with my brother in case something happens.”
Aria kissed Aten on the cheek and ran off.
Aten shivered and wrung his hands nervously. “Robbie…..Robbie please be okay.”
“Aten, we should get you home. You have to take your heart medicine and this cold is not good for you.”
“Mom, I can't leave Robbie here. What if something bad happens to him?”
Daniel put his hand on Aten's shoulder. “It is getting cold outside. You can't afford to become sick.”
Aten sniffled and wiped his eyes. “What if Robbie…..dies?”
Miranda looked up at the top floor window. She knew that Aten felt as helpless as she did. She couldn't go up there and save
the family from these dangerous people.
“Aten, think of yourself. You're going to get sick.”
Kadin put his arms around Aten. “Come on, Aten. You need to take care of yourself, man. You can't take care of Robbie if
you're dead.”
Aten looked up again at the top window where his husband was held captive.
“Aten?”
The Egyptian turned and saw Bakura running towards them. “What are you doing here?”
“I heard what was happening and I came as fast as I could. I'm gonna break in.”
Aten's jaw dropped. “Can you do that? Aria and I couldn't get near the building.”
Bakura grinned. “I know a way. Follow me, Chibi Ishtar.”
Kadin exclaimed, “I'm coming, too!”
Kadin and Aten followed Bakura around to the back of the building.
“This is going to be a piece of cake,” the thief said.
Aten looked around for sign of the police. Bakura crept towards the back entrance and pointed to an air duct.
“All I need to do is open that and I'm in.”
Bakura reached for the drain pipe to help him climb and was thrown back, his hands red as if he were scalded with hot water.
Bakura held his head and groaned as he rubbed his injury. “Damn. What the fuck was that?”
The yami looked at his hands and winced.
Aten helped the yami to his feet. “Aria and I tried to walk near the building and it failed. We were also thrown back.”
“Why didn't you tell me?”
“You didn't ask when I said that Aria and I couldn't get near the building.”
Kadin stepped up to the barrier. “What is this?”
Bakura held onto Aten to gain his balance and released the teen. “It's magic…..dark magic.”
Aten brushed Bakura off. “Who would have put this barrier up?”
“Someone who doesn't want Seto rescued,” Bakura narrowed his eyes.
Kadin turned. “Why would someone not want to help? Seto Kaiba isn't such a bad guy.”
Bakura stepped towards the barrier and placed his finger on the edge. He jerked his hand back quickly as he felt his finger
burn.
“Aten, you said that you and Aria couldn't get through?”
Aten nodded. “It threw us back.”
Bakura looked at Kadin standing ahead of him. “Kadin's standing by the building….and he isn't being tossed back like a rag
doll.”
Aten scratched his head. “I don't know. I know the cops have been walking around here since this whole thing started.”
Bakura narrowed his eyes. “Mortals aren't affected.”
“Then how come Aria and I can't even get near it? We're mortals.”
Kadin looked at Aten and Bakura with a quizzical look. “Ummm….are you two okay?”
“Kadin is mortal. That may be the reason why he can stay there.”
Aten clenched his fists. “But I am mortal!”
Bakura shook his head. “You have Yami blood in your veins. Aria seems to have more Yami blood than you.”
Kadin walked up to Aten. “What are you talking about? Are you….human?”
Aten nodded. “Of course I'm human!”
Kadin lifted his finger and poked Aten's cheek. “You look human to me.”
“Kadin, I am human! I'm just….different than other people….and so is my family.”
Kadin looked into Aten's purple and brown eyes. “You look normal to me.”
Aten laughed uncomfortably. “Normal….not me.”
Kadin put his hands on Aten's shoulders. “You look fine to me, Aten. I don't see anything odd about you.”
The Egyptian looked into Kadin's eyes. “You don't?”
Kadin smiled and shook his head. “Not at all.”
Aten lowered his head. “I want Robbie….”
Kadin hugged Aten. “I know. Look, Aten, this cold is getting worse. Will you let me help you home?”
Aten shiffled. “I have my in-laws to help.”
Kadin smiled. “I at least want to help.”
Aten sighed. “Well…..maybe mom won't mind. I'm really worried about Robbie.”
Bakura looked up at the building. “I'll need Ishtar to help with this one. I don't think I can do this alone.”
***************************
Marik washed his hands and stood in front of his locker. He removed his hat with a groan. “If I have to do this for the rest of
eternity, I'll have to find a sharp spike to impale myself on.”
Marik heard the door open and he turned quickly.
His eyes narrowed and shifted back and forth. “Anyone there?”
No answer came. The locker room was silent except for the sound of his own breathing.
Marik removed his shirt and suddenly found himself pinned facing the lockers.
He growled and felt a tongue lick the back of his neck. A tiny nip at the back of the neck and a familiar growl made him relax.
“Itemri?”
Bakura turned Marik around grinned at him, pinning Marik's wrists against the lockers. The white-haired yami grinned.
“You look so sexy pinned against those lockers.”
Marik moaned as Bakura pressed against him and nibbled at his collarbone.
Marik ground himself against Bakura and licked Bakura's lips.
The white-haired yami pressed his lips against Marik's and kissed him deeply. Marik purred under Bakura's tongue. “This is
the best way to be greeted after a long shift.”
Bakura grinned. “I couldn't resist…you look so damn hot.”
Marik grinned. “So to what do I owe your impromptu visit…or do you intend to screw my brains out at work?”
“Wouldn't be the first time.”
Marik laughed. “Very true.”
Bakura released Marik. “Did you hear about the crisis at KaibaCorp?”
Marik nodded. “Everyone was talking about it today.”
“I tried to go there and there's some type of magic preventing me from entering the building. Aten said that even he and
Aria couldn't go near it. Look at my hand.”
Marik looked at Bakura's hand and winced at the sight. “Oh, my poor angel.”
Marik kissed Bakura's palm. “That looks like it hurts.”
“Yeah, it does.”
“What type of magic blocked you?”
Bakura groaned as he rubbed the back of his head. “I'm not sure. It's a barrier of magic that I can't cross, but mortals seem
to have no problem crossing it.”
Marik put his shirt on and grabbed the Millennium Rod. “Show me what you mean.”
***********************
Bakura and Marik crept along the dark streets. The police still stood guard in front of the building. As they crept around the back, Marik sniffed the air. His foot stepped in a puddle.
“Itemri, did it rain tonight?”
“No. Why?”
Marik looked down in the darkness. “My foot is wet.”
Bakura looked down, noticing his feet were wet, too. He removed a lighter from his pocket and flicked it on. At his feet, he
saw a dead body.
“Oh shit!”
Marik jumped out of the puddle and covered his nose and mouth. “Careful of the blood, Itemri. You don't need to be
bloodlusted tonight.”
Bakura and Marik walked over the bodies and towards the back of the building. “There must have been a shoot-out. These bodies were not here earlier.”
Bakura looked up at the building. “Put your hand out.”
Marik put his hand out and he winced. “SHIT! OW!”
Marik pulled his hand away. “It's like freaking acid! How can we get into the building? The mortals had no problem getting in
there and walking around.”
Bakura narrowed his eyes. “There's no way we can break this.”
Marik shook his head. “This is one hell of a barrier. I don't know what can crack it.”
Bakura heard dogs barking nearby and the sound of the policemen. “Scram!”
Marik and Bakura scurried away from the dogs. “We'll find some way to bring that barrier down, Itemri.”
Bakura grinned. `Yeah, and I can brainstorm with Malik tonight…'
***********************
After dinner, Kadin found Aten sitting in the back yard looking up at the stars.
“Aten?”
“Oh…hi, Kadin. Did you enjoy dinner?”
“Mmmhm…your mother in law makes a mean chicken dinner.”
Aten smiled. “Yes, mom is a good cook.”
Aten lowered his head and Kadin put his hand on Aten's shoulder.
“Aten, Robbie will be okay.”
Aten buried his face in his hands and sobbed. “Robbie…..I couldn't get to him.”
Kadin sat beside Aten. “Hey, I'll be here while Robbie isn't.”
Aten sniffled. “I don't want Robbie to die on me. That's not the way it's supposed to be.”
Kadin took Aten's hand. “Robbie won't die, Aten.”
Aten turned to Kadin. “Are you sure?”
Kadin leaned over and whispered. “Trust me.”
Kadin leaned over further and kissed Aten on the lips………
