The Power of the Gods

Isis and Shaddi turned towards the door. The knock sounded on the door again. Shaddi and Isis walked towards the door cautiously.

“Who is there?”

“It is I, Odion, my Lady.”

Isis and Shaddi breathed a sigh of relief. “Come in, Odion.”

The tall Egyptian walked in and bowed towards Isis. “My Lady, I have found a passage in the Scriptures which you may
find…..unsettling.”

“What did you find?” Shaddi asked, standing beside Isis.

Odion removed a scroll from the inside of his robe. He rolled the scroll out on the table and kneeled before the papyrus.

“This scroll contains prophecies regarding the Final Battle of Greed. It reads `And from the heavens a bellowing roar shall
smite him. The black heart will grow weak. Greed will fall, but not without the price of blood. Only through sacrifice shall
Greed crumble. The weak shall fall, and the strong shall rise.”

Isis opened the left side of the scroll. “'Greed will fall, but not without the price of blood.' Who's blood shall be spilled?”

Odion shook his head. “The only letter that is visible is the `A'. The rest of the word has been burned away.”

“Burned? Who could have burned this scroll? This has been in our family's possession for years.”

“One of our ancestors could have tried to protect the identity.”

“It could be anyone.”

“It cannot be our niece whose blood is shed. She survives the Final Battle. Read here: The offspring of the lowly peasant
shall reign victorious, the fruit of her womb shall come forth before the last star fades from the sky.”

Shaddi scratched his cheek with his finger. “So the girl lives.”

Isis skimmed the parchment quickly. “I'm worried. Whose blood will be shed? Who will be sacrificed?”

“Use your necklace, my Lady,” Odion said.

“I'm afraid I cannot. I am having difficulty tapping into the magic of my Item. With the date of the Final Battle quickly
approaching, my ability to foresee the future has diminished significantly.”

Shaddi looked at the scroll. “I wonder if the pharaoh is the one to be sacrificed.”

“Were our ancestors trying to protect the pharaoh when they wrote this? Were they hoping to protect the pharaoh from harm
by refusing to name him on the papyrus?”

Isis sighed. “I worry for my nephew. Aria must emerge from the Final Battle intact if she happens to give birth shortly after.
There's no mention of Aten….anywhere on the scroll.”
Shaddi leaned over and read with Isis. “He is mentioned in later scrolls, is he not?

Odion nodded. “He is. But he is referred to as the `Demon Ankhenaten.'”

“Aten a demon? That's not possible. That boy wouldn't hurt a fly.”

Odion narrowed his eyes as he thought of Malik on that fateful day.

*****Flashback*****

“Let's go, boy! It's time for your initiation!” The man grumbled as he pulled his ten year old son into what he called
the “initiation chamber.”

“ODION! HELP! I don't want to be a tomb-keeper!” the child shrieked in fear. “I don't want this!”

Malik's father roared angrily. “NONSENSE, MALIK ISHTAR! I got the initiation just as my father had before me! Now it's time
for you to bear the mark of the pharaoh, my son!”

Odion watched helplessly as the child was dragged into the “initiation chamber.” He shook his head sadly. `Poor Master
Malik.'

“ODION! FOR THE LOVE OF RA! HELP ME, PLEASE!” the child cried with large, teary eyes.

*****End flashback*****

“Malik wouldn't have hurt a fly either….if Marik hadn't come into his life.”

Isis turned. “Odion, Marik has changed.”

“I know he has, but I find it hard to believe still. A killer will always be a killer.”

Shaddi nodded. “You cannot ask a cobra to be a desert rabbit. It's in the cobra's nature to be what it is.”

Isis shook her head. “I know my brother. He is not mean-spirited. Marik made him do what he did so many years ago.”

“I agree,” Shaddi said.

Shaddi looked outside the balcony and heard a rumble in the sky. “I should be returning to my home. It is late and I have
a long ride.”

“I'm wondering what the future holds. I'm hoping the pharaoh can see the light.”

Isis shook her head. “That won't happen as long as Aten and Aria are alive. I don't see him changing his ways. They stand
in his way.”

Shaddi stood up. “I will say goodbye to you, Lady Isis. I'm glad to see that you are well and you still have your Millennium Items.”

Isis brushed her hand over her Necklace. “I must protect this with all of my strength. Yami cannot succeed.”

“I agree. Goodnight, Lady Isis. Goodnight, Odion.”

Shaddi bowed slightly to Isis and left the apartment complex. He mounted his horse and rode through the streets of Cairo.
His horse galloped through the desert quickly as the rumbling overhead became louder.

Behind him, he heard the sound of another horse approaching.

He turned and saw a dark figure galloping quickly.

Shaddi snapped the reigns and his horse quickly followed. “Hurry!” he called to the horse as his pursuer approached.

He turned and saw a shining Sennen Eye on his forehead.

“The pharaoh! Quickly! Hurry!”

His opponent quickly approached him and turned his head.

“Shaddi.”

“My pharaoh!”

Yami took a riding crop and hit Shaddi. The Egyptian tried to block it with his arm. Yami whacked Shaddi across the face
with the riding crop, making the man lose his balance and fall from his racing horse onto the sand.

Yami stopped his horse and jumped off. He walked over to Shaddi and looked at the Egyptian laying on the sand.

“Shaddi…we meet again.”

“My pharaoh….”

Yami leaned down to Shaddi. “I am in need of your Item. Give it to me………….Now.”

Shaddi's hand moved to the Millennium Key around his neck. “My Key?”

“I need the Scales and Key. I need your Millennium Items.”

Shaddi stood up and swallowed hard. “My pharaoh, I cannot give you my Key.”

“And why not?” Yami growled.

“Because you will use it to do evil.”

Yami chuckled. “And what makes you think that I will?”
“Because you are Greed. You want the Millennium Items for your own gain.”

“Nothing is wrong with wanting the power of the gods. I will be the most powerful being on Earth, Shaddi. If you hand me
your items, I promise you that you will be handsomely rewarded.”

Shaddi took a step back. “You can't have my Items! I won't let you!”

Yami narrowed his eyes and clenched his fist. Shaddi let out a scream and collapsed onto the sand, panting.

”What…..is….wrong…with ….me?”

“I am stopping your lungs from bringing valuable oxygen into your body. You have only a few minutes before you pass
out….a few moments later, your brain activity will cease…..then…your heart stops. You will be dead.”

Shaddi gasped for breath as he felt his lungs straining for air. “My…..pharaoh.”

“Are you willing to give me your items? I can tell where you live, so I can go retrieve them if you happen to die here in the
middle of the desert.”

Shaddi gripped onto the key and choked. “I surrender.”

The tight grip around Shaddi's lungs disappeared. He panted and coughed. Yami pulled him to his feet.

“Lead me to the Scales…and I will promise to spare your life.”

Shaddi lowered his eyes. “Yes, my pharaoh.”

Aten sat beside Joey and held his hand. The Scepter of Ra laid beside Joey's body.
The Egyptian teen rubbed his uncle's hand affectionately. “Un-tle Joey…when are you going to wake up?”

Joey's eyelids fluttered and Aten reached out and ran his fingers through Joey's blond hair.

“I know you can hear me, Un-tle Puppy. I know you can.”

Aten jumped when he felt a hand on his shoulder. He turned and saw Dr. Zira standing behind him.

“Aten? Are you still here?”

“I came to check on him. I wanted to make sure he was okay.”

“My boy, you should be at home resting.”

“I can't rest knowing that he is in pain here. It's not right.”

“Joey has a strong spirit.”

Aten looked at Joey. “I never knew he had a drinking problem….”

“Yes, my boy, unfortunately, Joey has been in recovery for a very long time.”

”I don't want him to die, doctor.”

“I don't want to lose him either, Aten. But I will do the best that I can for him…and for you.” Zira watched the teen's chest
rising and falling unsteadily. “How are you feeling, Aten?”

“My husband is in KaibaCorp….and I can't get to him.”

Dr. Zira pat Aten's back. “I mean you, Aten Bakari.”

“Well, I've been really tired lately. A few times I needed oxygen in my sleep because I find I have a hard time breathing.”

“Aten, I want you to take care of yourself. That means eating and sleeping and those exercises I asked that you do.”

“I know. I try to do them, but I lose my breath very easily.”

Dr. Zira nodded. “As long as you try, Aten.”

Aten nodded. “I do try. I try very hard. I get angry when I can't do them.”

“Don't get angry, Aten. You do what you can do. In the meantime, don't give up.”

Aten watched Zira leave.

//Easy for him to say. You're a quitter to the bone.//

/I am not, yami./

Aten heard the laughing come from the Scepter of Ra.

//You gave up on trying to break through that barrier so easily! Robbie might be dead and it's all because of you.//

Aten narrowed his eyes. /I couldn't get near it! It's not my fault that I couldn't cross that barrier! It hurt!/

//A quitter…..to the bone.//

Aten narrowed his eyes and threw the Scepter of Ra across the room. “Piss off…I'm having a rough day.”

//Quitter.//

Aten sighed and rubbed Joey's arm. “I wish I could bring you back.”

“Excuse me,” a raspy voice said quietly behind him.

Aten turned around and saw six men standing by the door. “Yes?”

“Could we have a moment alone with Mr. Kaiba here?”

Aten looked at the men dressed in suits with smirks on their faces. “Why?”

“We have a little unfinished business with the life partner of Seto Kaiba.”

Aten stood up and faced the men. “I don't trust you.”

“You must understand, boy. This is not a request. This is a demand. Now go.”

Aten looked at Joey laying in the bed. “I….I can't.”

The men shut the door to the room. “It's quite a pity,” the old man said. “Now we will have to kill you, too.”

Aten stepped back as he saw the men withdraw guns out of their jackets. They removed silencers from their jackets and
attached them onto the end of the gun barrels.

/YAMI! AKU! YAMI ATEN! HELP!/

//Oh, first you tell us to piss off and now you want our help?//

The men pointed their guns at Aten and Joey.

/Yami, they're going to kill me!/

//Well….we can't have that now, can we? If you die, I cannot survive. PREPARE TO BE TAKEN OVER!//

The Scepter of Ra flew across the room and into Aten's hand. Aten clutched the sides of his head and grit his teeth against
the pain.

The men exchanged confused glances and looked down at their leader.

“Shoot the boy and Kaiba!”

The guns fired and ricocheted into the walls as they hit a barrier. One bullet hit one of the men, sending him down to the
floor.

The men stared at the teen and Joey, confused.

“Our bullets didn't even hit the little bastard!” one man growled.

The men watched the teen laugh with his head lowered. They watched his hair spike and his nails grow. Drops of red blood
dripped from underneath the nails.

The teen raised his head and chuckled. His eyes had turned pitch black, his canines were sharp.

“What is the meaning of this?” the leader asked.

“Do you honestly think I would let you destroy this body? Do you think that I would let you destroy this body before I had
the chance?”

The men's eyes widened in horror.

“What are you? You're not human!”

Yami Aten laughed. “No, I am not human….I am a puppet. Let me show you what it means to be who I am.”

Yami Aten raised his hands and the men levitated. Their guns dropped from their hands as they hung suspended in the
air.

“My wrists are on fire!”

“I can't move my arms or legs!”

Yami Aten grinned. “Yes, you should feel as if you are dangling from nothing but wire. This is what it's like….to be a
puppet. Dangling on a string for other people's amusement. This is how it feels to have nothing underneath your feet. Not
a very comfortable feeling, is it?”

“Let me down!” one man snarled.

“I'll tell you what,” Yami Aten said as he brushed the man's face with his sharp nails. “I'll let you down. Piece by piece. Atta!”
(Atta; To cut up (Egyptian Arabic)

Yami Aten watched as the man was sliced by threads of wire which had appeared. The men screamed in horror as the man was cut to pieces by wire.

A purple haze filled the room. “Scream all you want. No one can hear you scream.”

Yami Aten reached into the bits of flesh and removed the heart from the dead body. “It's been a while since I indulged in
the joy of brutal murder.”

The leader screamed in terror as Yami Aten bit into the organ and licked his lips.

Yami Aten chewed and swallowed hungrily. Behind Aten came a large monster.

“I think it's only fair I introduce you to my friend, The Ultimate Obedient Fiend.”

The men screamed as the monster growled at them.

Beside the Ultimate Obedient Fiend, came The Helpless Child. The two year old boy in tattered rags moved in front of Yami
Aten and kneeled, crossing his arms in front of him.

“I defend my Master, Aten.”

Yami Aten reached down and pet the child's lowered head. “Such a good little boy….who suffered a painful death at the
hands of the pharaoh.”

Behind Aten, a dragon roared and poked his head through the portal towards Joey.

The Red Eyes Black Dragon nudged the unconscious Joey with his muzzle. The Blue Eyes' head slipped by the Red Eyes and
also nuzzled Joey lovingly.

“Isn't that the sweetest thing? The dragons know who their masters are….and I'm sure the Red Eyes is not too happy at you
trying to kill her master.”

The Red Eyes turned to the dangling men and roared.

“Red Eyes, take one of them for your personal chew toy. I care not who.”

The Red Eyes roared loudly and grabbed one of the dangling men with her mouth. The man screamed as the dragon's
teeth pierced his body.

“Blue Eyes, it's only fair. Take one as a nice little…..chew toy.”

The Blue Eyes roared and grabbed his victim with his mouth and throttled him as he died.

The other three men screamed and struggled as they were suspended in the air.

“Three more bastards left.” Aten walked up to one of them and growled. “Who sent you here?”

The man swallowed and panted from anxiety. “Our dead master sent us.”

“Dead master?”

“The one who was just eaten by that black dragon!”

“Why did you come here?”

“That man is a partner of Seto Kaiba….our sworn enemy! We thought we could destroy him in retaliation for everything that
Seto Kaiba has done to us!”

Yami Aten grabbed the man's throat angrily. “What did our uncle do to you?”

“He's taken territory away from us! He's taken business away from us! He has slaughtered many of our people!”

“Don't kill us!” the other man pleaded.

“I hope your deaths will send a message to those who seek to hurt our family. Don't screw with us! Kill them, my monster.”

The Helpless Child closed his eyes tightly as he heard the Ultimate Obedient Fiend attack the three men. The child opened
his eyes to see he was now kneeling in a pool of blood. The two year old boy cringed.

Yami Aten grinned at his monster's killing prowess. “Very good. Now drag those carcasses away.”

The Helpless Child raised his head slowly and saw the fiend dragging the carcasses behind him.

“Helpless Child, you may go. Watch how my monster disposes of the bodies. One of these days, you will not be afraid of
attacking.”

The child looked up at Yami Aten with large eyes. “I cannot attack, sir,” the child whispered.

“You will. I will see to it. Now, go.”

The child bowed and followed the fiend dragging the bodies.

The purple haze faded, as well as the blood on the floor.

Yami Aten looked around at the spotless room. Not a drop of the floor lingered. He licked his hands free of the bloody
heart, which he finished eating.

//You're useless. I have to protect you, too?//

/Yami Aten…../

//I'm done doing your dirty work for you, Aten. Back into the Scepter I go.//

Aten wavered on his feet as his senses returned. The room spun around him and the ringing appeared in his ear again.

“Joey…..”

Aten collapsed on the floor unconscious.

Miranda looked outside the window and tapped her fingers nervously against her arm. “Where can he be? He's late for
dinner.”

The grandmother walked beside Miranda. “Get your ass in the kitchen, girl! Dinner's done and is getting cold!”

“Mom, I have to wait for Aten. He always calls and lets me know if he's going to be late.”

“Maybe he's out trying to find another Sugar Daddy.”

Miranda shook her head. “Aten's not like that. He wouldn't do that to Robbie.”

“You never know, girl! You know, those people are…..loose.”

“Who's lose?”

The old woman leaned into Miranda. “Those types……”

“Aten does not sleep around! He's probably waiting at KaibaCorp to see if he can get into the building.”

“Stubborn and stupid…something I'd expect from a heathen like him.”

“Aten is not a heathen, mom!”

The old woman shook her head. “I beg to differ. That dark skin…..those strange eyes of his….everything about him
screams that he is a demon. And a worthless, shit-faced demon, at that.”

“Mom, stop it! I like Aten! I wouldn't have let Robbie marry him if I didn't think that they weren't perfect for one another!”

“Aten is no good. He is a curse. He is a worthless child who will not amount to anything….especially if he dies early,
Miranda. You're best bet is to just dump the kid in a ditch and leave him.”

Miranda narrowed her eyes. “I am not doing that to Aten! I refuse to do that!”

“Aten is a worthless brat who will not amount to anything. I don't know why you would even attempt to let him touch your
boy!”

“Aten's a good kid, mom. And I trust Aten. You know, I've been hearing you do nothing but bad mouth Aten! I'm getting
tired of it!”

The old woman grabbed miranda's wrist and squeezed. “Don't you ever talk to me like that! I am still your mother!”

“I like Aten and he will continue to live under MY house whether you like it or not!” Miranda growled, pulling her arm away.

The phone rang and Miranda picked it up.

“Hello?....Yes, this is Mrs. Morgan…….Oh my! Yes, I'll be right there to pick him up!....Yes….Goodbye!”

Miranda ran for her coat. “Aten collapsed in the hospital! I'm going to bring him home.”

“Why can't his bastard parents do it?”

“Because Aten is my son's husband! I told Marik and Ryou that I will take care of their son until his death, and I mean it!”

The old woman shrugged and sat on the couch. “It doesn't look like he has long left to live anyway with the way he gasps
for breath and whimpers in pain from his chest.”

“Tell Daniel I went to pick Aten up at the hospital if he comes back!”

“What do I look like? A messenger girl?”

Miranda rolled her eyes and ran out the door.

She drove quickly to the hospital, her mind racing with thoughts of her mother, Robbie, and Aten.

`I have to get that woman out of that house and out of my life.'

Miranda arrived at the hospital and ran towards Joey's room where Dr. Zira had revived the unconscious boy.

“Aten, oh my god, are you okay, kiddo?”

Aten opened his eyes slowly and reached out for her. “Mom…..”

Miranda took the shaking boy in her arms. “You'll be okay, Aten. I promise.”

Aten breathed heavily and unsteadily.

“The nurse found him in here and I thought he fainted. It didn't even look like he was breathing.”

Miranda rocked Aten as the boy sobbed against him. “Let's get you home, Aten. You've had a hard day.”

Aten nodded quietly and struggled to his feet.

Aten turned to Joey and kissed Joey's forehead. “Bye, Un-tle Joey. I love you.”

Isis looked outside the window as the wind blew quickly. She closed the window to her bedroom and removed her bathrobe.

She let the soft linen fall from her body, exposing her to the light of the oil lamp. Isis grabbed a brush and stroked her
soft black hair, which laid delicately against her tan skin and breasts.

The candles in the corner flickered as her eye caught the glimpse of a shadow moving across her wall.

Isis dropped the brush on the bed and wrapped her linen around her naked body.

“Is anyone here?” she asked as her eyes scanned the dim room.

No answers came from the shadows.

Isis sat on the bed again and continued to brush her hair.

She took some oil and rubbed it over her arms and legs. With a smile, she rubbed the oil on her neck and her breasts.

The Egyptian woman's eyes snapped open when she felt a presence behind her.

She jumped up and turned.

“Yami!” she gasped as she closed her robe.

“Hello, Lady Isis. Now, now….don't be so modest. I have no interest in your naked body.”

“How dare you come into my private chambers and watch me undress!”

“Now, now, my lady…..let's not say things which we cannot take back. I need your Millennium Necklace.”

Isis stepped back. “I will not give this to you!”

“Don't make me take it by force….I can just as easily do that. I thought that I would be polite by asking rather than taking
this time.”

“You don't know the meaning of the word `polite'!”

Yami stepped towards the bottom of the bed. “Give me your necklace or I will take it.”

Isis ran for the door and pulled at it violently.

“I locked the door with Shadow Magic. Only I can enter and exit this room. I am not leaving until I take what is mine.”

“The Millennium Necklace has been passed down through generations of the Ishtar Family. I was destined to own it. Not
you!”

“Well, my Lady Isis, it may be destined to be in your hands, but it is my destiny to attain the power of the gods. I believe
that being more powerful than Ra himself is more important than squabbling over the ownership of one little Millennium
item, don't you think?”

Yami approached Isis and reached out. “Give me that Millennium Necklace or I will pry it from your cold, dead body!”

Yami's hands clutched around her neck. He pulled her to the open window and tightened his grip around her.

Yami leaned her backwards over the balcony in the pouring rain and rough wind. “Give me the Necklace now, or I will let you
fall to your death!”
