//……….//=Aku/Yami Aten

By My Side

Aten opened his brown eye as he felt Robbie's body relax and heard his deep breathing. He opened his purple eye and watched Robbie breath deeply in his sleep. His husband's eyes periodically moved with REM sleep.
Aten smiled and kept his arm draped over Robbie's naked body, his soft flesh warming Aten's body.
The teen felt his husband's chest rise and fall slowly.
Aten slowly and cautiously moved his arm off of Robbie.

Aten's POV
I watched my husband sleep…
His eyes moving….
His chest rising and falling….
If what I have seen in my dreams comes true…..This will be the last time I will be in bed with my husband.
This will be the last time that I will ever watch him sleep….or feel his heart beating against mine.
My hands reach up and I cup his cheek in my hand.
Robbie…..I love you.
My thumb lightly traces those lips that I have kissed a thousand times over.
My hand stroked his cheek lightly as he slept.
He looks so peaceful.
I let my hand drift down his neck and onto his chest. I rubbed his chest up to his shoulder in his sleep.
Robbie let out a little moan in his sleep.
Robbie's arm was draped over me and I felt his fingers tap sporadically against my back.
He's dreaming.
Robbie…..what are you dreaming about?
Things we've done?
Things we've not done?
Are you dreaming of when we used to play as kids? Cops and Robbers? Soldiers?
Or are you dreaming of our time in that house? Hayden's screaming…..you must have heard my screaming….Hayden's crying.
We survived that because we had each other.
Without you, Robbie……I would not have made it.
Without you, Robbie……I wouldn't have anyone.
But I have you, my husband.
I moved my head against his chest and I listened to his heart.
……….
………..
………
Was this going to be the last time I would ever hear the beat of my husband's heart? The heart that comforted me whenever I felt down or alone. The heart that kept my husband alive….
My hand ran down his side and over his slender hip.
My Robbie….
A tiny whimper escaped him and I felt Robbie's arousal slowly awakening against my own.
I didn't have the heart to get Robbie started again.
I shouldn't wake him…..
Even though I would love nothing more than to wake him and make love to him.
But I know he needs his sleep. If I plan on going to help Aria, Robbie can't know I'm leaving.
I nuzzle my cheek against his chest again and felt his body warm against me.
I wrap my arm around him again and held him against me tightly.
My eye shed a tear, which crept down my cheek slowly.
Gods, Robbie…..
I don't want to let you go….
If this is the last time I'm ever going to hold you….
I don't want it to end.
I just want to stay right here….
But I can't leave Aria to face Yami alone.
If she does, she could lose everything…
My sister may die.
I don't want my sister to be killed.
I have to help her. She's my family. I don't want her baby to die, too. That baby won't have a chance if Aria is knocked back during the battle.
I can't let her face Yami alone. I will have to go.
I kissed Robbie's neck and sniffled. “Robbie?”
Robbie breathed deeply and breathed out slowly. His eyes stopped their movement.
“Robbie….I'll never forget you. Sleep tight.”
I reluctantly released Robbie and slowly inched myself out of bed. Robbie groaned and turned on his back. He turned his head to the side and continued sleeping.
I finally slipped myself completely out of bed. I looked down at him, the sheets covered his hips, but his stomach and chest remained exposed to the moonlight.
………..
It's going to be hard to leave him.
So very hard.
I covered him with the blankets and comforter and watched him whimper in his sleep again.
I walked to the desk and wrote a letter to Robbie:

My Dearest Robbie,
I have to go help my sister in her battle against Yami. You may not understand why I'm going to do this, but she is my sister. She is family. And I cannot deny the fact that this is part of my destiny.
I know you may not understand. You may feel very upset.
I have no idea if I will survive this Final Battle with Yami. According to what I have read of the legend, neither opponent of Yami survived. They were both killed shortly after the battle.
If that be the case, Robbie, know that I didn't mean to hurt you by sacrificing myself. Know that I love you with all my heart and I only wish for your happiness. You are a very wonderful person, Robbie. You mean so much to me….more than I could ever possibly describe. You've helped me in ways that nobody else could.
You have a beautiful soul….and an angelic spirit.
Know that my heart will always belong to you….forever, my husband…forever, my friend…forever, my lover…forever mine.

Sincerely Yours For Eternity,
Aten Bakari Ishtar Ibn Marik

I put the note down and sealed it in an envelope and marked it: Robbie…With Love, Aten.
I dressed in my jeans and purple shirt. I placed my black ankh necklace around my neck.
I grabbed the Scepter of Ra from my bureau and I walked back to the bed. I left the envelope on my side of the bed.
Slowly, I leaned down and kissed Robbie on the lips.
“I love you.”
It was the hardest thing to leave his side.
I crept out of the room and down the steps. The house was quiet. Mom and dad were sleeping quietly upstairs. It was almost midnight when I stopped. I should organize my paintings. In case Robbie sells them, I want to make sure what is finished and what is not finished are separated.
Racing into my Studio, I separated my finished Masterpieces: An Angel in Flight, Hollow Moon, and Midnight Madness. I placed a black sheet over them. I grabbed my unfinished works and leaned them against my table.
My black funeral candle sat on my altar. It was nearly finished. I just had to write my name in the wax.
In case I survive, I won't light that candle.
But if I don't, I'm sure Robbie will keep that as a souvenir….something to remember me by.
After arranging my paintings, I grabbed mom and dad's car keys. I can't drive, but I have to get to Aria's home before she thinks about leaving.
I've watched mom and dad drive hundreds of times. I can do this.
I looked up the stairs.
”Goodbye.”
Running for the car, I turned the ignition.
Stupid thing! Be more quiet!
When I pulled away from the home, I took a deep breath.
Time to face my destiny.

***************************

Aten opened the door and saw Aria pulling down her dress and tightening the bows in her hair. Aria turned quickly to see who had entered and sighed in relief at the sight of her brother.
“Hello, brother. I'm glad to see you.”
Aten pulled the Scepter of Ra out of his belt. “I'm coming with you.”
Aria turned around and her hair twitched in frustration. “You are not coming with me, Aten. This is very dangerous.”
“Don't you think I know that? Sister, I'm not letting you face Yami……especially in your condition.”
A little growl escaped the girl's throat and she approached Aten. The boy stood still and jumped when his sister whacked his arm. “You bastard! What do you mean by that? `In my condition?'”
“You are pregnant!”
Aria whacked her brother's arm again. “That doesn't make me weak!”
Aten raised an eyebrow. “What about going yami? What effect will that have on your baby?”
Aria straightened her back and looked away from Aten. “I don't know.”
“You know that once we confront Yami, we won't be able to stop our darker selves from taking over.”
Aria nodded. “I can fight her back.”
Aten shook his head. “You won't be able to fight her off for long. Once you see Yami, it's going to be harder for us to stop our transformation.”
Aria rubbed her large belly. The baby kicked her hand. “I have to be able to stop my darker side. I don't want the baby harmed.”
Aten walked up to her and put his hand on her shoulders lightly. “I have to do this for you, don't you understand?”
Aria shook her head. “Aten, your heart won't be able to take it! You're already living on borrowed time!”
“Aria, I've been living on borrowed time for thirteen years already! I've had a good run, it's time for me to go!”
“You are not facing me with Yami! That is FINAL!” Aria yelled out angrily.
Aten straightened his back. “Aria Kanika Itemri? You need me.”
“No, I don't! I'm a big girl and I can do this by myself without your help! Go home to Robbie and go back to sleep. If I win against Yami, the sun will come up. If not….then we're all as good as dead.”
Aten shook his head. “Aria, I'm not leaving your side. You are my sister and you are my friend. I won't let anyone harm you.
We are a team. We always have been a team. Even growing up, we have always watched each other's backs. And, correct me if I recall…..but remember the last time you told me you didn't need my help?”
Aria stepped back and crossed her arms in front of her. She turned away from her brother and walked towards the steps leading to Kai's room.
Aria growled and her hair spiked angrily. “I remember.”
Aten clutched the Scepter of Ra in his hand. “You needed me then. I watched your back. Aria, I put my ass on the line literally for you that night! Are you still going to stand there and tell me you don't need me when I sure as hell know that you do? You're too proud to admit it, aren't you? You need your brother's help!”
The girl took a deep breath and looked her brother in the eye. “That was different. I let my guard down. I won't do that this time.”
“You. Need. My. Help.”
“I don't! What good will you be? You're sick! You're weak!”
Aten narrowed his eyes. “I may be sick. I may not be as strong as you. But, sister, I will defend you until my last breath.”
Aria looked up at her brother. “Do you mean it?”
Aten nodded. “You are my sister. I needed you and you were always there for me.”
The girl sighed. “Yes….you were always there when I needed you , too….even when I didn't want you to be there…..you were always by my side.”
Aten hugged his sister. “I will always be your brother…your partner in crime.”
Aria grinned. “Okay, Aten. If we go down, we'll go down together.”
Aten nodded. “It's a deal.”

***********************

Aria and Aten arrived in the park. In the middle of the field stood a huge dueling platform. Yami and Seto were standing on top of the platform.
Aten let out a little growl. “They have the Millennium Items….all of them.”
Aria looked at Seto and Yami. “The Millennium Rod is missing.”
Seto looked at Aria with hesitation and reluctance in his eye. Around his neck he wore the Millennium Necklace. He wore the Millennium Key.
Yami sneered down at his two rivals. The Puzzle and Ring dangled around his neck. The Scales were in his hand. The Millennium Eye was now placed into his left eye.
Aria gripped her Millennium Trident in her hand. “This is going to be a very dangerous fight.”
“So, you two decided to finally show up! That will benefit us. We get to take you both down together! That will save us time, right, my High Priest?”
Seto nodded. “Yes, my pharaoh.”
“Un-tle Seto? Are you going to join the pharaoh?”
“I have no choice, Aten. I have to join Yami. Joey's life depends on it.”
Aria narrowed her eyes. “You are a sell-out!”
“I have to do what I can to keep Joey alive, Aria. Please don't hate me for this.”
Aten growled. “Yami must be manipulating him, Aria. Seto would never voluntarily join Yami….not after he killed Aiden.”
“Are you making Seto fight against his will, pharaoh?”
Yami laughed. “Me? Making Seto fight against his will? Not likely. Tell him, Seto.”
Seto stepped forward. “I fight of my own free will….to….k---kill those who would oppose the pharaoh.”
Aten and Aria exchanged glances.
“Last chance, Aria…..do you wish to do this?”
Aria took a deep breath and nodded. “We were born for this moment, Aten….We have to face our destiny.”
Aten took Aria's hand in his. “Together, we will succeed.”
Aten smiled at his sister. `I'll give my life to protect you……..in protecting you, I protect everything and everyone we love. I won't let you down.'
Aten and Aria stood on the platform. Seto and Yami walked to the other side of the platform.
Seto and Aria locked eyes. Their eyes full of hesitation and reluctance.
“Aria……..please. Reconsider,” Seto pleaded with Aria. “Think of your baby.”
Aria took a deep breath and stood up straight. “I will have to take the risk to keep the world safe from Yami and his lust for power.”
Yami chuckled as he looked at Aten. “I know all about Lust…..don't you think so, Aten?”
Aten narrowed his eyes. “Quiet! How dare you think of taking advantage of me! All those years….all those times….it was you who did that! You were Kadin! You were Dominick! You were the one who raped me!”
Yami breathed in, evidently pleased with himself. “That was your place back in Egypt, Aten….nothing needs to change now that it is modern times. You were where you belonged….underneath me, pleading…begging for my mercy.”
Aten placed his duel disk on his arm and slipped his deck into the slot. “I'm going to pay you back for all the times you violated me! For all the pain you put me through!”
//That's it, boy! LET YOUR RAGE FUEL YOUR THIRST FOR BLOOD! LET YOUR PAIN DARKEN YOUR HEART! LET YOUR HUNGER FOR VENGEANCE BRING OUT THE CRUELTY OF WHICH YOU ARE CAPABLE! LET YOUR ANGUISH…...CARRY YOU FORWARD. FOR I, YOUR DARK ANGEL, WILL GIVE YOU POWER, THE LIKES OF WHICH YOU HAVE NEVER SEEN!//
Aten gripped his hair and tugged. “I can't stop it!”
//YOU CAN'T FIGHT ME! IT'S HOPELESS! GIVE INTO THE FURY THAT BURNS WITHIN YOUR VEINS! GIVE IN TO THE DARKNESS! GIVE INTO THE HATE! FOR THAT IS WHAT SHALL SET YOUR TRUE SELF FREE!//
Aten's eyes darkened and his hair spiked.
Aria looked over at her brother and saw a marked change in his transformation to his yami form. The tips of his hair were black….
That had never happened.
His canines sharpened, his nails sharpened.
“Fear me,” the yami teen growled.
Yami laughed. “Fear you? You are weak! Your heart won't be able to withstand this battle for long.”
Yami Aten chuckled. “Little do you know me. I am Darkness. I am Death. I am Disease. I am Pain. I am Despair. I feed off of the negative experiences of this body….like a parasite. You will not defeat me easily….I have fused with the Dark Yami within this body. You have met your match, pathetic pharaoh.”
Aria growled and her hair spiked. She placed the duel disk on her arm and placed her deck inside.
Yami grinned. “Well, this is it. LET THE FINAL BATTLE BEGIN!”

Note: sorry if this is short, guys. It was a rough mental week last week.
