Behind A Wall of Glass
Marik held Ryou's hand tightly as they walked down the long, lit hallway. Ryou's other hand rose to his chest as he felt his heart beat uncomfortably fast. Each step became harder as he followed the nurse to Aten's room.
“We have him in isolation now. You'll only be able to look at him through the glass. He's still weak.”
Ryou clenched his fists and felt his heart sink. “I can't be near him at all?”
“I'm sorry, Mr. Itemri. You have to stay on this side of the glass…for now anyway.”
Robbie, who had been lingering in the back with Malik, spoke up. “I'm his husband! I can't even go in there?”
“No, Mr. Morgan. You can't. When Aten is cleared by Dr. Zira, then he will be transferred to his room.”
“He's been in here numerous times and we've always been able to just come in here and see him and talk to him at his bedside,” Marik snarled. “Why can't we this time?”
“Doctor's orders, Mr. Ishtar.”
“'Doctor's orders' my ass,” Marik grumbled.
“He's being kept under observation, Mr. Ishtar. He won't be down here forever. His injuries were extensive and resuscitation was extremely difficult. Aten went into cardiac arrest and we had to replace his pacemaker.”
Ryou raised an eyebrow. “Replace his pacemaker? That pacemaker was good for another ten years. Why did you have to replace it?”
“The unit was completely fried. The pacemaker failed. The system short-circuited.”
“At least I taught that pharaoh not to fuck with my kid anymore,” Marik grumbled under his breath.
Malik put his hand on Marik's shoulder, feeling his yami's anger and frustration. /It's going to be okay, Marik. You'll see./
//How can you be sure?//
/I can't be….but no matter what, Aten will always have people who care about him and will be there for him. From what I saw, Bakura and you taught Yami a good lesson./
“Here we are,” the nurse said as she stopped in front of a window.
Marik and Ryou turned and saw Aten laying in a hospital bed, once again hooked up to IV's and breathing machines. His neck was in a brace, his torso was also in a brace and strapped to the bed. The Egyptian's legs were also strapped to the bed.
//Yami needed to be taught a harder lesson for what he has made my son endure.//
“Why is my son tied down like that?” Ryou asked.
“We can't have him moving, Mr. Itemri. If he moves, he can dislocate something again. Those straps are for his own protection and safety.”
Malik shook his head. “He's not going to like that if he wakes up.”
“We know how to handle him,” the nurse said.
Malik shook his head again. “I doubt that. He'll tear those straps to shreds in a matter of seconds when he finds out he's been restrained.”
“He can't break out of them.”
“Aten will,” Marik said with a growl. “My son does not take kindly to being tied down.”
Ryou nodded. “I agree. He's going to fight when he wakes up.”
Robbie put his hand and forehead on the glass separating him from his husband. "Aten....."
Malik held Marik's hand as he felt his yami's emotions start to disintegrate from the angry father to the grieving father concerned for his dying son's life.
Ryou's bottom lip trembled as he watched his son laying in the bed unresponsive. "He will live, won't he?"
"Dr. Zira will be here shortly to speak to you. He will tell you all you need to know."
"He will live....my boy will live...won't he?"
The nurse put her hand on Ryou's shoulder. "The doctor will see you shortly."
Marik put his arm around Ryou and kissed the white-haired man's head. "It's okay, Ryou.....Aten will live. He's a very strong boy."
"Marik's right," Malik chimed in. "Aten's been through worse."
"Since when has Aten ever fell from that height?" Robbie asked with a glare at Malik.
"Aten's been through alot, Robbie. Believe me when I say that he has been through worse than this and lived."
Robbie clenched his fists and punched the glass in anger. "HE'S TEN FEET AWAY FROM ME AND I CAN'T EVEN TOUCH HIM!"
The nurse jumped back in surprise. "Mr. Morgan! Stop that!"
Robbie turned to the nurse angrily. "I want to see Aten right now....and not between a sheet of glass!"
"Mr. Robert Morgan-Ishtar, such an outburst hardly becomes you," Katie said as she walked beside Dr. Zira.
"I can't stand to be out here while Aten needs me in there!"
"Robbie, he wouldn't know you were in there even if you were standing beside him. He has a slight skull fracture in the back of his head. We had to do some surgery to examine the wound. He will be unconscious for a while."
Katie walked up to Robbie and put her hand on his arm. "He'll be okay, Robbie."
"He'll be under observation until we feel it's safe. Let's go into my office where we can speak quietly. The hallway is no place for such sensitive discussion."
Marik looked down at Ryou, whose gaze was fixed on Aten in bed. Tears slipped down Ryou's face as he looked at the teen in the bed. "Tenshi? Let's go."
Ryou shook his head. "No. I want to stay here."
Malik hugged Ryou. "We'll tell you later what he says, Ryou. Will you be okay here?"
Ryou sniffled and nodded.
"Malik, stay with him. Robbie and I will go speak to the doctors."
"Are you sure?"
Marik released Ryou and cupped Malik's face in his hands. "I know you can keep him calm....He needs you now."
Malik looked into the deep, purple, hypnotizing eyes of his dark half. "Okay, tenshi. I'll stay here with Ryou."
The yami smiled and kissed his other half's honey-sweet lips. "Good boy. I'll reward you later for your good behavior."
Malik smiled. "Sounds like fun."
Malik put his arm around Ryou's waist as he watched Robbie and Marik walk off sombrely. "Ryou? I'm here for you."
Ryou put his arms around Malik and clung to the Egyptian tightly. "Just hold me."
********************************
Robbie and Marik sat in Zira's office. Marik saw Robbie twirling his wedding band around his finger and holding Aten's wedding ring in his other hand."Why do you have Aten's wedding ring?"
Robbie and Marik sat in Zira's office. Marik saw Robbie twirling his wedding band around his finger and holding Aten's wedding ring in his other hand."Why do you have Aten's wedding ring?"
"They gave me Aten's wedding ring before they began the surgery," Robbie explained.
Dr. Zira sat behind his desk while Katie sat beside the desk. "Aten's survival is nothing less than a miracle."
Marik gave the doctor a small smile. "He's always been my miracle baby. Considering he has a heart condition which kills most babies before the age of five, and he is still with us, I consider that the biggest miracle yet."
"Very true. Dr. Zira has graciously briefed me on Aten's medical conditions and I find it remarkable how stable he is."
"There's been times when he can't breathe and he cries because of the pain in his chest. You call that stable?"
Zira sat back in his chair. "Modern medicine can only help so much, Robert. We are making him as comfortable as we can. He's on the highest dosage of painkillers that we can legally give him. Anything more and we could overdose him or cause his other organs serious injury."
“What can you do to help my boy?” Marik asked, crossing his arms and legs.
“We had to perform surgery on Aten's skull. Blunt trauma cracked the back of his skull open slightly and we had to ensure that no fragments of bone splintered into the brain. Aten also was lucky enough to survive a broken neck.”
Robbie tensed up and gasped. “What?!”
“How come he isn't dead?” Marik asked.
“Not everyone dies of a broken neck, Marik,” Katie said. “Since the vertebrae surrounding Aten's spinal cord were broken, but the spinal cord itself was intact, Aten has a very good chance of survival. However, if his spinal cord were damaged or bruised, he could become a quadriplegic or have other neurological problems. Aten has to be handled very carefully until the bones in his neck heal….and heal correctly.”
Marik felt himself relax slightly. “I thought my son was going to die…..”
“He won't, Marik,” Zira said confidently. “Aten was handled very carefully and here he will stay until he is safe enough to move. He won't be moved until it is completely safe to do so.”
Robbie ran his fingers through his hair. “How close was his spinal cord to being damaged?”
“A little more force could have damaged it,” Peters said.
“Aten took that blow for his sister. Aten knew that Aria wouldn't have been able to take that blow.”
Dr. Zira leaned forward. “What exactly happened?”
Marik and Robbie exchanged glances. “We cannot say,” Marik replied.
Zira tapped his finger on the desk. “I will need an explanation, Marik. In case anything happens to your son, I have to be able to explain.”
Robbie looked at Katie. “This is going to sound very odd, Katie, but maybe you should step out of the room.”
Zira gave the teen a grin. “Katie took the same oath I did, Robbie. Whatever you say will not leave this room.”
Marik raised an eyebrow at the doctor. Katie had always been Aten's nurse and she had attended to Aten throughout every hospital stay.
What would she say if she knew the truth about he and who he was?
What would she say about Shadow Magic and that he was a five thousand year old spirit who lived in the Millennium Rod, which remained connected to his hip at all times?
How much did Robbie tell her?
Marik took a deep breath. “My main goal is to see that my family is protected, Dr. Zira. Nothing against Katie here, but I don't feel comfortable discussing these events with her here. She knows nothing of our situation and my family's secrets must remain hidden.”
Katie stood up. “Well, Marik, I respect your decision. I'll check up on my patients.”
“I'm sorry, Katie,” Robbie said.
“Don't worry, Robbie. I understand. I'll be back later.”
Katie left and Robbie shifted in his chair uncomfortably.
“Tell me what happened,” Zira said, leaning forward in his chair.
Marik took a deep breath. “Aten and Aria were dueling Yami and Seto Kaiba. When me and my family arrived at Domino Park, we saw a huge dueling platform. It was about ten feet high, if not more. Aten was hit a number of times by Yami's monsters.”
“I thought those things were holograms,” Zira said.
“They were playing a Shadow Game…..the creatures are not holograms. They are every bit real. Every strike. Every burn. Every bite. You can feel everything these creatures do.”
Robbie nodded. “This isn't the first Shadow Game I saw, though.”
“Shadow Games are more dangerous than these little tournaments that Seto Kaiba throws. Aten and Aria were both being hit badly.
Yami was going to hit Aria when Aten directed the attack towards him. He was blasted back off of the dueling platform and landed in the grass.”
Robbie nodded. “When he fell, I heard something inside him snap. After that, he just laid on the grass, barely breathing. On the way here the doctors said he went into cardiac arrest.”
Zira nodded. “It was the shock of the fall, coupled with the pacemaker problem.”
“That fucking thing was supposed to last him! What happened to it?”
“The pacemaker unit was damaged by the attack on your son. The unit was overloaded and it failed, causing Aten's heart to suddenly stop.”
Robbie narrowed his eyes. “My husband almost died!”
“I replaced the unit, Robbie. But even with the new unit, Aten's heart was also badly damaged by the attack. His system was overloaded. Robert. Marik. I'm sorry, but I don't see Aten having more than a couple years left with that heart and that pacemaker combined.”
Marik growled and slammed his fist on Zira's desk angrily. “Where's that fucking heart donor? Why can't you find a heart somewhere to give to my kid so he doesn't die on me?”
“We had a heart lined up, but Aten chose for that heart to go to a younger boy who needed it more. Aten gave another little boy a chance at life.”
Robbie shook his head. “Why? He needed it, too!”
“I asked Aten if that is what he wanted and he told me, `If that little boy needs it….let him have it. He's just beginning his life….he deserves to have a happy life….and to be the healthy boy he always wanted to be.' Aten went on to tell me that the little boy deserved to run and play and have a normal life.”
Robbie slapped his forehead. “I can't believe that Aten would do such a thing!”
“I would,” Marik quickly responded. “Aten's always had a compassionate feeling for children. He hates to see a child sick or injured.”
“But Aten finally had a heart!” Robbie exclaimed.
“Yes, he did,” Dr. Zira said. “But Aten couldn't bear to see a child die from his heart problem.”
Robbie gripped his curly hair. “Stupid Aten! Stupid! Stupid! Stupid!”
The blond yami turned sharply and grabbed Robbie's wrist, making the boy jump. “Don't ever call my boy stupid, Robert….He is my son and your husband. Aten has his reasons for doing what he did. That doesn't make my son stupid….My son gave another little boy a second chance at life. That is not stupid. That makes my boy brave and compassionate.”
Robbie watched as Marik released his arm. “Aten needed a second chance, too.”
“Robbie, we can't explain why Aten did what he did,” Zira said quietly. “We'll find another donor for him.”
Robbie sat back in his chair. “Okay, doctor.”
“Aten's going to need close observation until his neck bones and his skull heals. He has minor problems like a broken shoulder and some bruises, but they will fade in time too.”
Robbie sighed. “Will Aten be okay?”
Zira nodded. “Aten's doing well after the surgery, Robbie. We're going to keep him here until he is safe.”
A knock sounded on the door and Katie opened it. “Sorry to disturb you, but Marik, can you come out into the hallway? Ryou fainted.”
“Oh shit!” Marik growled as he jumped to his feet and ran to the fallen hikari in the hallway.
“What happened, Malik?”
“He started wavering and then he just collapsed in my arms.”
Dr. Zira placed his fingers on the side of Ryou's neck. “His pulse seems a little unstable.”
Marik kneeled beside Ryou and stroked his cheek. “Ryou? Speak to me…..”
The hikari didn't respond.
“Did Ryou take his heart medication this morning?”
Malik nodded. “He takes it every day.”
Dr. Zira turned to Katie. “His heart rate is becoming unstable, too. Get me a bed. Step back, Marik.”
The blond yami stepped back as a bed was brought over. Malik stepped back and into the waiting arms of Malik.
“ISHTARS!”
Marik and Malik turned to see Bakura running down the hallway.
“Ryou!” Bakura called as he arrived by his husband's side. “Are you okay?”
Zira helped Ryou onto a bed. “His heart rate is unstable, Bakura. We have to monitor him.”
Bakura watched the doctors wheel Ryou down the hallway. “Malik, what happened?”
“I don't know! One minute he was fine, then he was flushed, then he got dizzy, and then he collapsed in my arms. He looked pale and said he didn't feel good.”
Bakura leaned against the wall. “I felt him get dizzy and I had to leave Aria.”
“Did she have her baby yet?”
Bakura nodded. “A baby boy.”
Marik grinned. “Go Umi….”
“At least Aria has Umi with her.”
“We don't want to bother the new parents. We'll let Aria and the baby get settled in before we charge in there.”
Marik nodded in agreement. “It's best we wait.”
“You guys should go home,” Bakura said. “I can handle things here on both ends.”
“You sure?” Malik asked.
“Yeah, you two go on.”
Malik hugged Bakura and kissed his cheek. “If you need anything, just call.”
Bakura hugged the blond hikari and kissed his ear. “I will.”
******************************
Malik and Marik staggered into the house and closed the door behind them.
Malik leaned against the door with a sigh. “What a long day…….”
Marik nodded and ran his fingers through his blond hair. “Tell me about it. I'm fucking starving….”
The hikari walked up to his yami and hugged him. “I'll make us something to eat. Why don't you take a bath?”
“You don't have to tell me twice.”
Malik watched his husband walk up the steps slowly, his face distant, his shoulders sagged. `He's worried about Aten.'
Malik's POV
Poor Marik….
He has a lot on his plate right now.
I can feel how tired he is…..
He used up a lot of energy beating the shit out of Yami.
He and Bakura did a good job, too, from the looks of things.
I know Marik won't mind a quick chicken sandwich, so I set to making it as I hear the bath water running upstairs.
A few moments later as I'm putting the chicken on the bread, I hear a long, loud elongated moan from upstairs and an emphatic `OH HELL YEAHHHHHHHHHH………'
Marik was finally in the tub.
/How does it feel, yami?/
//I've died and gone to Paradise.//
/I'm making your sandwich now./
//………..Damn this feels so good.//
My eyes widened as he felt a hand slip between my legs. /Marik? Are you touching yourself?/
//The question is…when am I NOT thinking of touching myself?//
/MARIK JIBADE ISHTAR! EW!/
//You like it…..Admit it.//
I felt Marik's hand between my legs again. /Are you still bloodlusted from Yami's little incident?/
//Wouldn't you like to know?//
Marik's hand slipped lower and massage the base of my length. /Are you really touching yourself?/
//Again….wouldn't you like to know?//
A moan emanated from upstairs.
I had to grip onto the countertop. “Marik, you bastard,” I moaned as my legs became weak.
//I'm a bastard now? Here I thought I was an angel.// Marik asked innocently.
/You are no angel…./ Iwhimpered as he felt Marik's hand on the tip again. /I'm trying to make your dinner…do you mind?/
The ghost hand disappeared.
//I was just having a bit of fun.//
“I know, but I'm hungry.”
The water ran out of the tub upstairs.
/Done so soon?/
//I want my dinner…and maybe some hikari for dessert.//
I laughed. /Okay….let's see how you hold up./
Marik came down the steps in his purple satin robe. “Did you enjoy my little harassment in the tub?”
I put the sandwiches on the table. “Did I at any point say stop?”
My yami sat down and quickly ate his sandwich.
I bit into his sandwich and felt Marik's foot rub against my leg. “Now you're harassing me while I'm eating?”
“It's fun.”
I giggled and quickly devoured my food quickly. “There. Now you can harass me!”
Marik grinned and ran his foot up between my legs again. “What makes you think I want to?”
I had to grip onto the table as Marik's foot rubbed against my arousal. A little moan and I stood up quickly. I walked around to Marik and I straddled his lap. I pulled him into a deep kiss.
By the time I realized what was happening, Marik was carrying me up the stairs to our bedroom…..
