The Lost

Dr. Zira looked up from his chart at the couple before him. Ryou sat up in his bed looking at Zira with nervous eyes. He gripped Bakura's hand slowly and squeezed it.
`Please don't let Ryou be pregnant…..please don't let Ryou be pregnant,' Bakura repeated in his head, blocking Ryou from his mantra.
“Ryou, we don't know how it is possible…..but you lost the baby.”
Bakura and Ryou's jaws hung low. “What?” they both asked quietly in unison.
“This confounded me when I saw this, and I don't know how this is possible….but let me show you.”
Dr. Zira placed one ultrasound scan by a light panel and brought Bakura over. “This first one is what we took a year ago when Ryou was having problems with his stomach. It looks normal, right? You, Me, Marik…..
Bakura raised an eyebrow and laughed. “Marik is normal? Marik? Rod-Boy? Mr. My-Rod-Will-Get-Me-What-I-Want is normal?”
“Bakura, the doctor is trying to explain.”
Bakura snickered and wiped his eyes free of laughter. “Okay, I'm better now.”
“On this second ultrasound, you will see what I mean.”
Dr. Zira placed the second ultrasound by the light panel and Bakura cocked his head to the side. “Holy shit! Is that what I think it is?”
“The other doctors wondered if Ryou was a hermaphrodite. They asked me and I couldn't divulge such information to them.”
Bakura narrowed his eyes at the doctor. “You didn't tell them about how Ryou is the mother of Aria and Aten, did you?”
“No, Bakura, as far as the doctors who looked at this were concerned, Aria and Aten are adopted. They just call Ryou `mother' because he is their mother figure. I didn't divulge any of the truth behind their birth.”
“Can we trust these other doctors?” Ryou asked.
“These doctors won't breathe a word of this to anyone, Ryou.”
Bakura's lip curled. “They better not.”
“They won't. I kept your secret safe.”
“If people find out about Shadow Magic, our family won't be safe anywhere. My main concern is the protection of our family.”
Ryou looked down at his stomach after looking at the ultrasound. “I ….lost the baby? How could I do that?”
Bakura shook his head. “Call me crazy, but it could have been when Yami tossed you back several feet away and your heart nearly stopped on us. Don't beat yourself up over it, Ryou.”
Ryou touched his stomach and sighed.
“As you can see here, Ryou has a uterus….and here is the baby….this tiny little mark here. Ryou wasn't too far along in the pregnancy which is why he didn't show yet.”
Bakura looked closer. “That would explain the morning sickness, Ry.”
Ryou sighed. “And the strange cravings for food.”
Bakura walked up to his husband. “Ry, what's going on? Are you okay?”
Ryou's head was lowered and all Bakura was able to see was a little tearstain on Ryou's blue shirt.
“Baby?” Bakura asked, tilting Ryou's head up.
Ryou's cheeks were full of tears. “I'm sorry….I shouldn't cry.”
Bakura sat on the bed and brought Ryou into his arms. “Doctor, I need a moment with my husband alone.”
Dr. Zira nodded. “I'll be right outside.”
The doctor left and Bakura pet Ryou's hair.
“Baby, it's for the best.”
Ryou held onto Bakura and sniffled. “I know…..maybe that's why I'm crying.”
Bakura nodded and held Ryou against him. “Ryou, this was Yami's offspring….Think about that for a moment.”
“Would it have been so bad though? The baby would be a part of me, too.”
“Ryou, did you really want to raise Yami's child?”
Ryou sniffled and rubbed Bakura's arm. The white-haired man rested his head on Bakura's shoulder quietly.
“You don't have to answer that, Ryou. Just think about it.”
“I don't know how Yami did it, Bakura.”
Bakura held Ryou closer. “I know. Royal Magic. Royal Magic is what Yami used to change you.”
Ryou sniffled. “I didn't know what he was doing……”
“Don't worry, Ryou. Yami won't be doing anything to us for a long, long time. Marik and I made sure of it.”
“What if Yami hadn't thrown me back? Would I still be pregnant?”
Bakura shrugged. “Ra only knows, baby. Don't beat yourself up for it, Ryou. It was Yami's fault that he threw you back.”
“The problem is he must have known it would make me lose it. Why would he want to risk the life of his baby?”
“Because he's a self-righteous, pompous, conceited, stuck-up, self-serving, egotistical egomaniac?”
Ryou wiped his eyes. “I guess you're right.”
Bakura pulled back and held Ryou at arm's length. He wiped away one of Ryou's tears. “Baby, don't cry. No more tears.”
Ryou looked at the ultrasounds on the light panel. `Yami's responsible for all this….he made me lose it. I can't really blame myself….can I?'
Bakura nuzzled his cheek against Ryou's soft, white hair. He kissed the top of Ryou's forehead and sighed. “I took care of Yami with Marik, Ryou. We don't have to worry about him anymore. Let's just take care of you so this way we can get you home. You've been under a great deal of stress…and I know this just adds to it.”
Ryou sniffled and yawned. “I'm very tired.”
Bakura smiled. “You were up all night. You're not used to being awake at all hours of the night like I am. You should get some rest for when the doctors decide to do their thing. I want my Ryou to be strong enough.”
“I am strong,” Ryou yawned again.
“I know you are, hikari. You've been through so much. We'll get through this together.”
Ryou rubbed his eye. “It's been a long time since we've had to stay up all night.”
Bakura nodded. “A very very long time, baby…..”
“Aria was sick with the chicken pox….I stayed up with her all night when she spiked that high fever…..”
Bakura nodded. “We spent a small fortune on Calamine Lotion and Tylenol.”
Ryou sighed. “Yes we did. We sent Aten to stay with Seto and Joey so he wouldn't get it.”
Bakura snickered. “Then Hayden came down with it and Aria was still sick, so we sent him to Yugi's place.”
“We got him back a much better duelist….even his math was better.”
“Yes, I remember. We were impressed with his dueling progress.”
Ryou sighed. “I just want to go home……”
Bakura smiled and pet Ryou's hair. “I know, Ryou. We'll get you taken care of and we'll get you home as soon as we can, okay?”
No response.
“Ryou?”
Bakura pulled back and saw Ryou's head fall down limp. He tilted Ryou's head up and smiled. Ryou had fallen asleep. He cradled Ryou's head and his body in his arms. He stood up slowly and carefully laid Ryou on his back in the hospital bed. His husband's head fell limp to the side as he slept.
Bakura reached out and touched Ryou's cheek. “My Ryou……”
The yami let out a deep sigh as he watched his sleeping lover. He leaned over and kissed Ryou's forehead. “I love you, Ry. I always will. I'm going to check on our daughter and Aten. I will return.”
Bakura walked around the bed and looked at the ultrasounds. `Ryou was pregnant? Now he's not….It's all for the best. I couldn't raise the child of my enemy with a clear conscience. I couldn't do it. Not Yami's child. It would be impossible for me to do that. Ra works in mysterious ways.'
Bakura left the room and saw Dr. Zira standing at the door. “Ryou's in there, but he fell asleep on me.”
“Bakura, come with me for a moment.”
The white-haired yami followed the old doctor to his office and shut the door.
“Bakura, we will have to schedule a time where we can have surgery on Ryou.”
“Get it done as soon as you can, doctor. I don't want Ryou in here too long. He's weak and tired and just fucking exhausted from what we've all been through.”
Dr. Zira nodded. “I can tell. From what little Ryou told me, it sounds like all of you had a rough night.”
“We did.”
“You look tired yourself, Bakura. You should go home and get some sleep.”
Bakura chuckled. “Marik and Malik are home. Do you really think I would get a good night's sleep there? I'm willing to bet they're pounding each other to kingdom come. I'll get a better sleep tonight here by Ryou.”
“Are you sure? Isn't there somewhere else you can go?”
“My place is here with my family, doc. Ryou is here and he needs me right now. This is going to be physically and emotionally exhausting for him. My place is at my husband's side. My daughter just had a baby boy. I have to be here for her, too. I can't just up and leave her while she is here either.”
Dr. Zira leaned back. “She's in the best of hands, Bakura.”
Bakura nodded. “I know. But I also have to be here for Robbie. I have to be here for moral support for him. You know how he gets when Aten is in here.”
“I know. I'm amazed we haven't had to sedate him yet.”
“After what he just saw, doc, I'm sure he's very well sedated without the use of modern medicine.”
“I'm going to keep Ryou's heart monitored. We may have to change his pacemaker battery while we have him asleep.”
Bakura nodded. “Yes, you probably should. He has to get it replaced anyway. No use bringing him here again if you can do it here and now.”
“Is your insurance the same?”
Bakura shook his head. “Marik works for KaibaCorp now, so he has the same insurance moneybags does.”
“Oh, okay. Just give me a copy of your insurance card when you get it. We'll need it. Aten has the same insurance? Is Robbie still an employee of KaibaCorp?”
Bakura nodded. “Yes, he is still working there. He likes it.”
Zira nodded. “Okay. I will schedule Ryou for surgery tonight. In the meantime, go take care of your family. I'm sure you'll be back at Ryou's room by the time we have to take him in for surgery.”
“Okay, doc. I'm sure I'll be there in time.”
The yami left the doctor's office and walked down the hallway to see Robbie still standing by Aten's door.
“Robbie, how long are you going to stand there?”
“As long as it takes,” the teen replied with determination.
“Robbie, you should go home. We've all had a hell of a night. Aten won't wake up tonight, most likely. You should go home and get some rest.”
Robbie shook his head. “I have to be here for him.”
“You are going to drop dead of exhaustion, kid, I'm telling you.”
Robbie clenched his fists. “I can't leave him….I just can't!”
Bakura put his hand on Robbie's shoulder. “I'll tell you what, Rob, I have your cell phone number. The minute I hear something, I will call you. It's been a long ass day and I know you gotta be draggin' your ass behind you.”
Robbie sighed. “I am tired….but I can't leave him.”
“Go home. Go to bed. Get some dinner. Get some rest. I will have the cell phone on and I will call you if there is any change.”
“But, Bakura……”
“No buts, young man, get your ass out of here,” Bakura said giving Robbie's ass a hard smack. “Go home, Morgan.”
Robbie stopped short. “Did you just smack my ass?”
Bakura grinned. “Marik used to to it when you were little when you had to go home, remember? Ass slapping is a tradition around the Ishtar-Itemri home and has been for many, many, many years.” Bakura smiled. “It's an Ancient Egyptian Tradition….the Ceremony of Slapping of The Ass.”
Robbie snickered. “I bet.”
Bakura put his hands on Robbie's shoulders. “Don't worry about anything. I will take care of him.”
“You already have so much to take care of. Is Ryou okay?”
The yami sighed and shook his head. “Ryou needs surgery for his pacemaker and…..I'll tell you later about the other thing. Just go home, let Miranda know you're okay before she has to come over and see what's going on. You know how Marik always pounds Malik after seeing your mom.”
“Oh god, don't remind me…..”
“So, go on, Robbie. I can keep things together here. Five thousand years ago, I robbed the Royal Treasury back in Egypt…I was the Terror of Cairo's Rich and Prosperous. I took on Yami's army in a head-on battle and lived to tell about it. I think I can handle this.”
Robbie sighed. “Okay, I'll go…but call me the INSTANT something changes.”
“I will, Robbie, now go on. Don't make me spank your ass again.”
“Yes, sir.”
Robbie looked up at Aten in the bed. “Goodnight, Aten. I love you.”
The yami watched Robbie walk away slowly with his arms wrapped around him. His head was slightly lowered as he walked slowly down the hallway.
“Oh boy…..he's a stubborn one. It must be the German in him.”
Bakura walked down the hallway towards Maternity. His eyes peered around people laying in stretchers on the beds. Machines lined the hallway. Doctors in white were walking around, nurses were wheeling patients in wheelchairs.
`This is like home thousands of years ago….except there are sick people lining the way. The poor lined the streets there…you couldn't get around them after Yami came to power.'
Bakura saw Umi standing by a window where the newborns were being kept in their beds. “Hello, Umi. They got your chibi in here? Where is he?”
Umi pointed to the first row in front of him. “He's the third one down.”
“Did you name him?”
“We named him Rhett Bakura Tsunami.”
Bakura raised an eyebrow. “Your naming your child after me?”
“Aria told me it was tradition to name one of the children after you. So, we decided to name Rhett after you.”
“Well, I feel honored. It is tradition, though.”
“We should have done so with Kai, but `Kai Bakura Tsunami'? It doesn't sound right. So, we figured we would follow tradition with Rhett.”
Bakura grinned. “Thank you, Umi.”
“No problem….dad.”
Bakura watched the baby sleep, the pacifier slipping slowly out of his mouth. “He's a beautiful baby.”
Umi smiled proudly. “He's daddy's little boy.”
“When are you going over to Yugi's to get Kai?”
“The baby is sleeping and Aria is in her room resting. Do you mind staying with her while I go?”
“No, go on. I'll take care of Aria.”
Umi nodded. “Thanks, Bakura. I'll be right back, but I gotta kiss my wife first.”
Bakura followed Umi back to Aria's room.
Umi hugged Aria and kissed her lips. “I going to get Kai and bring him here to see you.”
“Kai should be sleeping by now. He was up late last night. I'd rather see him sleep. He's had a long night. But you may want to just be there for him when he wakes up. He's probably scared about me and wants his daddy.”
Umi nodded. “Yeah, that kid went through a lot last night. He needs to sleep.”
“And I'm sure he will appreciate his daddy nearby if he has a bad dream.”
“Alright, I'll go. Take good care of her, Bakura.”
“I did so for sixteen years.”
Umi kissed Aria one last time and closed the door behind him.
“How are you feeling, baby girl?”
“Fine. How's Aten?”
Bakura sat by her bed. “Aten will be under observation. They had to do surgery on him. The force from the fall cracked the back of his skull open a little bit…but he will be okay.”
Aria's face went white and her jaw dropped. “Oh my gods…..”
“Aten suffered a broken neck.”
Aria gasped. “Oh my god! Is he going to live?!”
“The bones around his vertebrae protected the spinal cord, which wasn't damaged, so he'll be okay. They have him immobilized right now.”
“So he will be in here a while…………..again.”
“Yes. He'll be in here a while.”
Aria relaxed in her bed. “The doctors say I can come home today with Rhett.”
“I heard you named the baby Rhett Bakura. That's a good name.”
“Thank you.”
“Your mother is also going to have to stay here. He collapsed in the hallway and has to get his battery changed in his pacemaker. Last night was a lot on him.”
Aria groaned. “I don't even want to ask what else could go wrong.”
“Your mother and Aten will be okay. I'm staying here until Marik and Malik stop pounding each other like a couple of dogs in heat.”
“How do you know they are doing that right now?”
Bakura laughed. “Number one: Marik saw blood and kicked Yami's ass. Number two: Blood arouses us. Number three: Nobody is at home. Number four: I bet you it's been a whole three days since the Ishtars screwed each other to death, so Marik's feeling needy without having sex for a whole three days.”
Aria covered her eyes. “I don't want to imagine Father Marik and Malik having sex, dad!”
Bakura snickered. “It's quite entertaining, actually. You'd be surprised what you can do with a banana and some duct tape.”
“OH GODS, DAD! STOP!”
“Or a pickle and some peanut butter.”
“OKAY, DAD!”
“Or a pineapple and Twizzlers.”
Aria covered her ears and looked at her father with disgust. “LA LA LA LA!!!!”
Bakura laughed. “I'm kidding, Aria….except for the pineapple and Twizzler incident. You know those things can be fun.”
Aria groaned. “Knock it off, dad!”
“Okay, okay, I'll behave.”
“Not bloody likely. Since when do you behave?”
“Hey, I behave myself!”
Aria dropped her hands. “Yeah, right. You're as bad as Father Marik.”
“And that's a bad thing because??????”
“I give up.”
“I just wanted to come and see how my baby girl was doing.”
Aria smiled. “They got me on painkillers, so I don't feel anything. I'm a little sore down there though from popping out something the size of a football out of my crotch.”
Bakura swallowed hard and blushed. “Maybe we shouldn't discuss that.”
Aria grinned. “Why? Embaressed that I pushed a baby out of my VAGINA????”
Bakura lowered his head and covered his eyes. “Oh good gods.”
“Yeah, daddy, I just pushed a baby out of my VAGINA! It was in my UTERUS….then slipped down the BIRTH CANAL….out of my VAGINA! My VAGINA!”
Bakura held his ears. “I'm not listening!”
Aria giggled and stopped. Bakura lowered his hands and looked at her suspiciously.
“Hey, dad?”
“What?”
“……………………&# 8230;……My Vagina.”
Bakura stood up. “Okay. I'm outta here.”
Aria grinned and settled back into the bed. “Okay, dad! Bye bye!”
“I'll see you soon, Aria!” Bakura called as he raced out of the room.
Aria smiled and crossed her arms behind her head. He gave a happy sigh. “Revenge is sweet.”
******************************************
Robbie arrived home and walked through the door. Miranda jumped up out of her seat and ran to Robbie.
“Robbie, are you okay?”
“Yeah, mom…I'm okay.”
Daniel walked out of the kitchen. “Robbie, your mother told me what happened. Are you okay?”
Robbie nodded. “Yeah, mom and dad. I'm okay.”
“Where's Aten?” Daniel asked.
“He's………He's……..He's very hurt….and he'll be in the hospital for a while.”
Miranda walked up and hugged her son. “I'm sorry, Robbie.”
“You need to take care of yourself now, son. Do you need to talk?”
Robbie shook his head. “No…..I just need a bath and my bed.”
“Okay, Robert. If you need to talk, we'll be here,” Daniel said.
“Thanks, dad….goodnight.”
Robbie went upstairs and ran the bath water. He grabbed some towels, stripped, and slowly slid into the bath.
He sighed as he thought about the night's events and how long Aten was going to be in the hospital. This wouldn't be the first night he spent alone in his bed with Aten in the hospital. Their big bed always felt more lonely with Aten not there.
He said a silent prayer for Aten then washed himself slowly.
He wrapped the towel around his hips and limped to his room. He dropped the towel and slipped into the big bed naked.
He looked around at the dark room.
Aten wasn't there.
He let his hand drift over the empty space in the bed sadly. “Aten….I do love you. Please come home soon.”
Robbie looked on the side table and saw Aten's stuffed monkey that he had when he was little. Robbie reached over and grabbed the monkey with the burned tail.
He brought the toy monkey against his chest and held it. “Aten…..”
Robbie kissed the toy monkey and closed his eyes. His hand drifted to Aten's side of the bed and he drifted off to sleep.
